In this episode, Clare talks about her career and we particularly focus on her leadership roles. She tells me that as doctors we are all leaders, and often don't appreciate the skills that we actually have. Her leadership wasn't part of a big master plan, she worked hard as a front line GP, had her eyes open to identify problems, and then went on and did something about it. She advises others to work hard, say yes to opportunities, and always be kind.Having first trained in psychiatry at the Maudsley hospital, Clare Gerada followed her father's footsteps and became a general practitioner, working in her practice in South London for more than thirty four years. Over this time, alongside her clinical practice, she has held several national leadership positions including both the Chair and President of the Royal College of General Practitioners, only the second women in its history to hold both position. Clare has also set up and led, until 2021 the award winning service for doctors and dentists with mental health problems, NHS Practitioner Health.  She has also set up and leads the Primary Care Gambling Service, a unique GP-led multidisciplinary service straddling the primary, secondary and third sectors. Clare was awarded an MBE in 2000 for her services to drug misuse and received a Dame hood in 2020 for services to mental health. With Phil Hammond, Clare is appearing at the Edinburgh fringe in August 2024: Fifty minutes to save the NHS. How a 19-year-old college student defeated anorexia with the help of her family, doctors — and a renewed relationship with God. (0:07) The narrator introduces Maureen Cole, a spirited 19-year-old student at Hope College and an avid dancer. Usually sunny, Maureen's positivity disappeared as she fell into habits that led to an eating disorder, at first unbeknownst to her parents. Marlise Cole, Maureen's mom, explains what she witnessed. (3:00) Maureen Cole describes the conditions that led to her anorexia, starting with the pandemic in 2020. A straight-A student, Maureen describes her reticence to switch to remote learning and dance via Zoom. As the pandemic wore on, she transformed her basement into a full home dance studio, and exercise slowly became an obsession. (7:00) Over Christmas break her senior year of high school, Maureen had a routine physical with her doctor, who told her she had lost 10 pounds. Others seemed to notice she looked fitter, and she liked the attention. (8:23) Slowly, her eating habits changed. She cut sweets and carbs, and began to become obsessed with her diet. She cut condiments, then red meat, then dairy. Eventually — and to Maureen's credit — she realized she might have an eating disorder, but didn't want to tell anyone. Her personality faded, and eventually, others began to take notice. (11:03) Maureen's dance teacher called her parents, who began to panic at the realization of what their daughter was facing. Maureen's body began to show frightening signs of an eating disorder. She started to work with a dietician and physician. (13:40) During fall break her first semester in college, Maureen visited the doctor for a check-up, but she hadn't gained any weight. Her heart rate was frighteningly low, and she realized — finally — that if nothing changed, she was slowly dying. (14:14) Realizing the gravity of the situation, Maureen finally committed to battling her anorexia. Her parents pulled her from dance, and found her a doctor specializing in eating disorders. She began a University of Michigan-sponsored program, Maudsley, to fight her disease. (16:38) Maureen describes the role of faith in her recovery. The realization that God was calling her to great things — not an eating disorder — was crucial, she says. Slowly, she began to see progress. (18:21) As things improved, Maureen's relationship with God did also. Her personality began to return, and she started to develop healthier relationships with food. (20:04) Today, Maureen continues her recovery, but she's back in school at Hope and dancing again. Maureen's mom, Marlise, describes Maureen's newly rediscovered relationship with God. Maureen describes the courage her journey took, and how she continues to battle — all with God's help. Mish Maudsley aka Mishfit's art occupies the hinterland between street art and fine art painting. An active part of UK street art for over 15 years, she has since painted internationally from the streets of Melbourne to Europe's biggest street art festival, Upfest. Her most recent foray into the world of London art fairs follows an incredible array of live painting venues over the years. From her studio in Brighton, she is now embracing a more refined approach, combining spray paint and oil paint, to create an energetic style that captures the raw process of creativity. Clashing traditional methods with a fresh contemporary urban art edge. Inspired by the forces of nature, and a deep sense of wanderlust, Mishfit has developed a vibrant visual language of dreamlike luminous cloudscapes as a metaphor for human emotion. Sometimes interwoven with obscured figurative elements, she creates poignant, exuberant paintings which celebrate the commonalities that make us human. Enjoy Part 2 of our conversation. This episode explores how to support your loved one when they're struggling with an eating disorder. I talk through the New Maudsley Animal Model - the wonderful model created by the Maudsley Eating Disorder Service in London, UK. The model uses animal metaphors to educate and support carers in their communication with their loved one.   Being a carer is hugely challenging. With the best of intentions, we can go off track with our communication and inadvertently strengthen the ed voice. The Model simplifies communication and empowers carers with the skills to create a motivational and hopeful environment for change. I also talk through some of the nuances of practically putting this Model into practice, based on unexpected personal experience recently of supporting someone close to me.  I hope that you enjoy the episode. He is the President of the British branch of the International Association for Near-Death Studies. Fenwick has been part of the editorial board for a number of journals including the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, the Journal of Consciousness Studies and the Journal of Epilepsy and Behaviour.Fenwick's interest in near-death experiences was piqued when he read Raymond Moody's book Life After Life. Initially sceptical of Moody's anecdotal evidence, Fenwick reassessed his opinion after a discussion with one of his own patients, who described a near-death experience very similar to that of Moody's subjects. Since then, he has collected and analysed more than 300 examples of near-death experiences. Fenwick argues that human consciousness may be more than just a function of the brain.

Huge thanks to this week's sponsor: Dead Happy. Use our code MURDER for 3 months FREE life insurance! This week, Tom and Ben explore the chilling case of “The Brain Eater” Robert Maudsley. Maudsley is widely regarded as “Britain's Most Dangerous Prisoner” and currently holds the record for the most time spent consecutively in solitary confinement. Though, surprisingly, he entered the British prison system having committed only one murder - with many of the public sympathising with him and claiming they he is the true victim. How did Maudsley become “Britain's Most Dangerous Prisoner”? Was Maudsley's volatile childhood to blame for his later actions? Did the prison services fail Maudsley or was he able to manipulate the system? Are the rumours of “The Brain Eater” true? And why is Maudsley kept in solitary for 23 hours a day within a custom-built glass prison cell? Tune in and all will be revealed! Robert Maudsley started out murdering only one man, but became a serial killer once incarcerated. Is Robert a good old fashioned vigilante or is he really Britain's most dangerous prisoner? The sentence enforced on this criminal leaves one to wonder if a punishment can ever be too severe for a murderer.
