Diablo Cody (Juno) brings us this light-hearted horror-comedy starring Kathryn Newton (Paranormal Activity 4, Pokémon Detective Pikachu) and Cole Sprouse (Riverdale, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody). In this week's horror news, we chat through Stop Motion, the new animated and (somehow) live action adult cartoon horror movie (?????) that's coming to the United States and Bill Skarsgard's (It, Barbarian) recent arrest in Sweden for drug possession.

Mix a bit of Mary Shelley, a pinch of Heathers, a dash of Beetlejuice, and a soupçon of Edward Scissorhands, and you have Lisa Frankenstein, the new movie from the pen of Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer's Body). We review it in this week's episode, and seem to be among the few reviewers who actually enjoyed it.

It was torn up by critics and well known for having one of the worst advertising campaigns ever, but has since become a cult classic with queer horror fans and especially queer women. Why?Because it's actually really freaking good! It's a story about toxic friendships, blossoming queer relationships, 2000's indie emo bands, and ritual sacrifice and we're gonna tell you why it might be a modern queer feminist horror masterpiece. Also: Megan Fox is great, actually and we as a society owe her a huge apology.Recommendations:Shaun of the DeadThe DescentReady or NotFollow us on twitter @proghorrorpodFollow Jeremy on twitter @jrome58Follow Chris on twitter @themythofpsycheFollow Ben on twitter @benthekahnChris's other Podcast "Gotham Outsiders: A Batman Book Club Podcast"RSS Feed: https://feeds.transistor.fm/progressively-horrifiedWebsite: https://progressivelyhorrified.transistor.fm/Keep an eye out for our Patreon, with all sorts of bonuses, coming soon!★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Like many teenagers, ‘Jennifer’s Body’ (2009) was widely misunderstood, didn’t make much money, and claimed to have a lot more sex than it had. This was largely due to producer meddling (the film), marketing people completely out of touch with the intended audience (the film and teenagers in general), and nasty rumors that bogged down a good thing (both again). More recently hailed as an intriguing piece of queer horror and feminist dark comedy, ‘Jennifer’s Body’ came and went in the late 2000’s, largely seen (and ignored) as a cheap Megan Fox vehicle with scares and enough sex to shake a stick at. The truth is much more interesting, and the film’s heightened dialogue and self-aware campiness speaks to a deft understanding of horror tropes that director Karyn Kusama (‘Girlfight’) and writer Diablo Cody (‘Juno’) wield like a extra-sharp box cutter (that’s both a compliment and a deep cut from the film (and that’s a pun, fully intended)). The movie follows two best friends at a small town high school whose relationship is tested when one is turned into a demon-possessed succubus. CORRECTION: Henri goofed when recorded the show; it was Catherine Hardwicke who directed ‘Thirteen’ (2003), not Karyn Kusama. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/framesandfools/message

We were so Ready for Ricki. Really we were. And, well, you’ll just have to listen to the podcast. Starring, of course, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Audra McDonald, Rick Springfield, and Mamie Gummer (Meryl Streep’s real-life daughter). And Hollister sends a special shout-out to the bartender in Ricki and the Flash - played by Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect). Add two more Oscar winners to the mix: screenplay by Diablo Cody (Juno); directed by Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs). Meryl Streep - who once trained with the same voice coach as Beverly Sills - learned to play rhythm guitar for the movie. And in honor of the Rick in Ricki, we end the podcast with a live performance of Rick Springfield performing “Jessie’s Girl” (he used the same guitar in the film - but to play a truly supportive band member, held it at a higher angle). And now, time for the podcast (warning: our commentary might be more rock than roll).
