Sean and Amanda are joined by Juliet Litman and return to the (not so) wonderful world of Oz to cover John M. Chu's ‘Wicked: For Good,' starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Before diving in, they react to new movie trailers for Charli XCX's ‘The Moment' (1:02) and ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' (10:54). Then, they discuss ‘Wicked: For Good,' which they found deeply frustrating due to its bizarre story choices and one-dimensional characters (18:22). They hypothesize its potential box office, compare this year's press tour to last year's, and weigh its Academy Award chances (1:07:44). Next, Sean and Amanda briefly examine Clint Bentley's ‘Train Dreams,' starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, a deeply earnest and sincere portrayal of grief with some beautiful digital photography and an amazing collection of character actors (1:22:55). Finally, Bentley joins the show to discuss his new film and explains why he initially thought the original material was unadaptable, how he put a lot of intent behind capturing the logging scenes in the movie, and shares his feelings on the current state of independent film (1:34:28). "Train Dreams" had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and later screened at the Toronto and AFI Film Festivals. Megan fills Dave in on WICKED: FOR GOOD (4:07), the conclusion of the film adapation of the Broadway musical which is an adaptation of the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. Verdict: Megan liked it, but didn't love it the way she loves WICKED (click here for a reminder). Then Dave and Megan talk about TRAIN DREAMS (20:34), director and co-screenwriter Clint Bentley's adaptation of the Denis Johnson novella. With gorgeous cinematography, a quietly deft screenplay, and a beautiful central performance from Joel Edgerton, Megan and Dave both see TRAIN DREAMS ending up on their year-end best-of lists. Over on Patreon, we watch the 2015 psychological horror film THE INVITATION, directed by Karyn Kusama and starring Logan Marshall-Green and Tammy Blanchard.

In front of a live audience at the TIFF Industry conference, I was joined onstage by Joel Edgerton, the star and executive producer of the lyrical new Netflix film Train Dreams. We talked about that gorgeous movie but also so much more, from how he and his brother Nash started making movies together at home in Australia to what it felt like to be a "stowaway" on a Star Wars set early in his career to what he's learned from working for Kathryn Bigelow, Baz Luhrmann, Barry Jenkins and many more directing luminaries. Though he may be most famous as an actor, Joel frequently works as a writer, director and producer, continuing to collaborate with his friends from his early days in Australia and even his brother — five days before our conversation, Nash was on set as his brother's stunt double. Katey reunites with her former Little Gold Men co-hosts David Canfield and Richard Lawson now that they've also wrapped up their time at Vanity Fair but remain very much in the thick of awards season. David, calling from Telluride, explains how Hamnet became such a sensation there while Richard, a veteran of the Venice Film Festival, explains why Jay Kelly may have met such a muted response there. They also indulge in a bit of nostalgia for their old podcast now that all three of them have left it— but we guarantee there are even bigger things ahead. Harley Mumford (Fandamentals podcast) and Tom Davies (The Proper Mental Podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Harley's choice The King. The King (2019) is a historical drama based on William Shakespeare's Henriad. Directed by David (War Machine) Michôd it's star studded cast includes Timothée Chalamet as Henry V, Joel Edgerton as John Falstaff, Sean Harris as Chief Justice Sir William Gascoigne, Tom Glynn-Carney as Sir Harry "Hotspur" Percy, Lily-Rose Depp as Catherine, Thomasin McKenzie as Phillippa, Queen of Denmark, Robert Pattinson as Louis, Duke of Guyenne and Ben Mendelsohn as King Henry IV. This adaptation of Shakespeare's Henriad focuses on the rise Henry V after his father's death while he navigates the politics involved and discovers while the loyalties lie. The King is much more a character study that action film, there is action but it explores in the emotional side as well. Recommendability for The King was mixed, its length and subject proved tricky to be universally recommended and it scores 2.85 overall. We are playing a game by creating mini-marathons of movies featuring Star Wars actors in their non-Star Wars roles. With a lack of Star Wars news as of the time of the recording, we decide to try something new. Many Star Wars actors are known for roles outside of their performances in Star Wars. Other actors famous for their roles in Star Wars don't have as extensive a career. In this game, we are challenging ourselves to create mini-movie marathons by pulling three actors' names out of the proverbial hat and then picking one other movie each of those actors have appeared in. Some of the picks (we're looking at you Harrison Ford) resulted in easy choices. Other picks (hello, Joel Edgerton) are a bit more challenging. So, what do you think of our picks? Would you have picked different movies? Download or stream this episode and then let us know what you would have done by reaching out at one of our social media contacts listed below. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy return after more than a week in Park City plus virtual screenings for this year's Sundance Film Festival and they are here to talk about 15 of their favorite films. They include a pair of body horror films about the terror of living happily ever after. There is also the horror of being a parent especially if you live next to the worst kind of Karen. Music plays a role in a lovely story about a washed-up folk singer and a lottery winner plus the heartbreaking tale of an artist taken away from us too quickly. There are more documentaries about the first deaf Oscar winner, teenagers who took on the environmental concerns of their community, the troubling legacy of To Catch a Predator and the consequences of delaying that colonoscopy. Audiences were treated to standout performances from Dylan O'Brien and the genuine discovery of the debut by a name to remember, Eva Victor. All that plus generational tales of Palestine and the building and rebuilding of America. 0:00 - Intro 5:44 – The Ugly Stepsister 11:03 – The Ballad of Wallis Island 16:16 – It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley 20:04 – Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore 26:26 – The Perfect Neighbor 35:25 – Predators 43:04 – Twinless 48:33 – If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You 54:01 – Andre is an Idiot 57:48 – All That's Left Of You 1:01:08 – Rebuilding 1:05:33 – Together 1:11:03 – Middletown 1:15:33 – Sorry, Baby 1:23:10 – Train Dreams 1:31:47 – More Sundance Mentions 1:34:29 - Outro

It's the end of our Schrader project - for a few weeks, at least - as we tackle the final film of his "Man In A Room" trilogy, 2022's MASTER GARDENER. Joining us is New Orleans-based writer Matthew Germenis! In 2011 Universal had the absolute audacity to release a prequel to John's Carpenter's The Thing telling the story of the Norwegian camp we briefly saw in the original. With Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton in the lead it seems as if a genuinely solid attempt was made at recapturing the magic of the first before studio interference didn't do justice to the original practical special effects by papering them over with rushed CGI, diminished character moments and re-edited story beats. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all of your favorite fictional universes. The Merc with the Mouth and Logan have officially taken the title of highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, with Deadpool & Wolverine barely edging out 2019's Joker from that honor. As of this recording, the MCU romp has accumulated $1.14 billion. And while that's a tough ticket to beat, other late summer movies are tracking for big openings as well with Alien: Romulus debuting globally at more than $180 million and Tim Burton's sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, eyeing a potential $80 million opening - which would make it the biggest September opening of all time. Lucasfilm announced Tuesday that this year's new show The Acolyte will not receive a second season. The show was incredibly divisive among fans, though critically was well-received. Showrunner Leslye Headland had pitched ideas for a second season, but those will not come to fruition now. Sony Pictures released an extended look at their upcoming Spider-Man villain movie, Kraven the Hunter. The movie releases December 13 and has a star-studded cast featuring Russell Crowe and Ariana DeBose with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the Titular role,. The new promo provided a slightly longer look at the Rhino, played by Alessandro Nivola. It's the story that dominated the Marvel fandom last week - when Beau DeMayo claimed his credit will be removed from season two because he shared fan art for Gay Pride in June. DeMayo cited this as quote “...the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while working on #XMen97 and #Blade.” Marvel quickly released a statement, responding to DeMayo's claim that it was his behavior, called “egregious” in the statement, which was the cause of his loss of credit as well as his termination. Sources following these statements claimed that an agreement had been reached regarding social media around X-Men'97 and DeMayo breached that contract. Other sources claim DeMayo's termination was due to sexual misconduct, though no internal reviews have surfaced. Camila Mendes, who starred in the CW series Riverdale, will play Teela in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films' live-action take on Masters of the Universe and will star opposite Nicholas Galitzine, who is playing the role of He-Man. Marvel Comics announced a Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds one-shot that will bring the character from season two of What If? into comics. Writer-director David O. Russell has cast Nicolas Cage to star in the lead role for Madden, the Amazon MGM Studios drama about the life of NFL coaching and broadcasting legend John Madden. "Will & Grace" creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, with executive producer Ryan Murphy, are bringing Hulu a comedy about chosen family. Starring executive producers Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer as well as Nathan Lee Graham, and Linda Lavin, this series follows three gay best friends who, after an unexpected death, decide to embrace their golden years together in sun-soaked Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother. Apple TV+ has renewed Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, for a second season. Derek Connolly, a franchise writer with a resume that includes the Jurassic World movies, has been tapped to write a live-action adaptation of the Sega video game Eternal Champions for Skydance. Puck Magazine's Matt Belloni is reporting that Mattel, who had been shopping a Barbie animated film, has entered talks with Illumination to produce it and Warner Brothers and Greta Gerwig are reportedly “not thrilled” about it. Amazon's Prime Video has canceled My Lady Jane, the period drama which combined romance and alternate-world fantasy. The cancellation comes about seven weeks after Prime Video released all eight episodes of the show's first and now only season.
Arguably the best thriller in recent years, 2015's “The Gift” rocked audiences and certified Joel Edgerton as a serious writer/director. Also, Drew Whitehouse, an old friend of mine hadn't seen it and was looking for a David Fincher style film. So I brought him on the pod to talk abbot what he thought of it.Join us as we talk about movies, character development and we reflect on how we were in high school. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:30 We're glad we took last week off. I've been watching Dark Matter on Apple TV with Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly. Chandra watched Bridgerton season three and Late Night with the Devil. She also loved Kendrick Lamar's live concert. Royals: Minutes 6:30 to 25:15 We got a photo and announcement from Princess Kate last Friday. She said she would be at Trooping but we did not expect to really see her. We wonder who has been making the decisions at Kensington Palace. We have heard for weeks that we shouldn't expect to see Kate until the autumn and maybe not all year. Her appearance at Trooping was a big surprise, especially since she missed the rehearsal. We wonder why so many fake videos and photos were released of Kate the past few weeks. The narrative after Kate's appearance was typical. Allison Pearson at the Telegraph ran a fawning over the top piece about how amazing Kate was for showing up at Trooping. The subtitle of the piece was “When lesser mortals would have stayed at home, Catherine proved that the show goes on.” It looks like Kensington Palace has taken over the messaging again as it's very tone deaf. Kate is covering People Magazine this week. King Charles' biographer Catherine Mayer gave the quote that “However difficult, or otherwise, this has been for Kate, appearing was an act of service under the terms of the institution she is part of.” Meghan sent jam and dog biscuits to Harry's best friend Nacho Figueras. Nacho posted photos of his dog, I think it's a whippet, next to the biscuits and the jam, which was labeled 2/2. Meghan was just sending a gift to a friend, it's not like she was doing it to overshadow Kate. Instead there was an article in the Daily Beast with a source who said “You just have to ask yourself, who would set out to ruin a cancer-sufferer's day? It is absolutely pathetic.” It's likely Meghan sent that jam days before anyone knew Kate would go to Trooping. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about the royals. We saw Carole and Michael Middleton at Royal Ascot. This was surprising, because there were stories as of late last week about how they didn't even pay the insolvency firm that helped them restructure and sell Party Pieces. Kate did not go to Royal Ascot and she also didn't go to the big Order of the Garter investiture ceremony earlier this week. She let everyone know that she would not be at those ceremonies. She's expected to be at Wimbledon in early July. Comments of the Week: Minutes 25:15 to end Chandra's comment of the week is from sevenblue on the post about Kendrick Lamar's live concert on Amazon prime.Kendrick has been making hip hop history. My comment of the week is from lanne on the post about the details of Justin Timberlake's DUI arrest. Thanks for listening bitches!
On the one hand in this episode, we've got a comic book movie that should in theory have launched further films. 2022's Morbius was designed to follow Venom into Sony's universe of Spider-Man spin-off characters. Yet so keen was the studio to join it up to the ongoing Spider-Man films, that problems ensued. And Jared Leto, in the lead role, was going method again. The Gift, the directorial debut of Joel Edgerton, was originally called Weirdo. He designed it to be a slim film, that he knew would be up against some tough competition at the box office.
