This week we welcome a special guest to the podcast: Congressman Ro Khanna of California's 17th District. First elected in 2016, Rep. Khanna has been a strong advocate for how Democrats can win back working-class voters. We cover his book, Dignity in a Digital Age: Making Tech Work for All of Us, and why the tech industry swung towards Trump last year. We then turn to Trump's joint address to Congress—are Democrats willing to side with the new administration on anything? How can Democrats effectively push back against Trump? We also talk about Rep. Khanna's bipartisan idea for a National Development Council and why a Frederick Douglass speech might have great advice for lost Democrats. Join us for a great conversation on how the party can emerge from last year's defeat better equipped to help working-class people and win elections!A transcript of this podcast is available at the post page on the TLP website. Information technology has fundamentally changed the daily lives of Americans - crunching years of data in seconds and automating seemingly infinitely complex tasks. Yet, as congressman Ro Khanna warns, technological progress has great power to either hurt or heal the country—creating division and furthering inequality if left unchecked, or creating opportunity and healing fractures if carefully directed. It is by keeping an eye on the least fortunate while channeling digital innovation, he argues, that we can create positive change. In his latest book, Dignity in the Digital Age, congressman Khanna explains how democratic access to technology can strengthen every sector of the economy, create more inclusive communities and mend a fractured country. Using “progressive capitalism” to create jobs and opportunities for all Americans, especially the least fortunate, he gives a blueprint of how to direct the future of the tech industry to be a powerful agent for positive change. Congressman Ro Khanna has represented California's Silicon Valley in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2016 and serves as chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on the Environment. Before his time in Congress, he served as the deputy assistant secretary of the Department of Commerce in the Obama administration and has taught economics and law at Stanford University. In the House of Representatives, Rep. Khanna has been a leading voice for tech equality, climate change accountability and the social responsibility of corporations. Join us, as Rep. Khanna explains how the digital revolution got us to where we are now—and explains where it can take us from here at this critical time in American history. In this episode, Anthony is joined by Congressman Ro Khanna, representative for California's 17th District, the heart of Silicon Valley and home to some of the world's largest technology giants. Together, they discuss what significant tech legislation would look like; explain why the Internet Bill of Rights is so crucial; and explore how we can begin to lessen some of the bitterness within the country. They then delve into Ro's latest book, Dignity in a Digital Age: Making Tech Work for All of Us, in which he makes a case for distributing tech jobs — and thus tech wealth across America. Next, Julia Davis, Russian media analyst and columnist for The Daily Beast, talks with Anthony about how pro-Russia propaganda has intensified since the start of the war in Ukraine; Julia shares her assessment of what's happening on the ground in Russia; and whether cracks are forming. They then discuss the impact of Arnold Schwarzenegger's recent video message and question how much Trump has helped Putin, as Russian propaganda has “served up a beneficial deck of cards for Trump.” Finally, Anthony speaks with Andrew Roberts, British historian, award-winning author, journalist and broadcaster, about his recent book The Last King of America: The Misunderstood Reign of George III. The book paints a nuanced and detailed portrait of the man who created the conditions for America's independence and explains why he has been unfairly represented. The conversation then switches to Andrew's previous book, Leadership in War, and what lessons we can learn from those who made history. The concept of dignity comes up a lot when we think about the condition of American democracy. Francis Fukuyama wrote about the demand for dignity and the politics of resentment and Chris Bail talked with us how dignity offline impacts our behavior online, just to name a few.Rep. Ro Khanna combines his experience in politics and technology policy to address the question of dignity in his new book, Dignity in the Digital Age. Khanna presents a vision for how the digital economy can create opportunities for people all across the country without uprooting them. He argues that democratizing digital innovation to build economically vibrant and inclusive communities. Instead of being subject to tech's reshaping of our economy, Khanna says we must channel those powerful forces toward creating a more healthy, equal, and democratic society. We begin this conversation by talking about the war in Ukraine and whether it might help bring unity to America. We also discuss why it's essential to make sure companies are contributing more than just jobs to the communities they operate in, as we heard from Alec MacGillis in his work on Amazon.Khanna represents Silicon Valley in Congress. He has taught economics at Stanford, served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce in the Obama Administration, and represented tech companies and startups in private practice. The Democrats are not doomed to defeat in the midterms, says Ro Khanna. Politics can turn around in the next few months. Khanna represents Silicon Valley in Congress, where he's a prominent figure in the Progressive Caucus. His new book is Dignity in a Digital Age: Making Tech Work for All of Us. Also: Amy Wilentz discusses Haiti: a country that should be inaugurating a new president. It has done so every five years on February 7—except for glitches, coups, and postponements—ever since Baby Doc Duvalier fled the island 37 years ago. But not this year. Wilentz explains why it's struggling to get the new beginning in needs, and how it might make it there. One more thing: Donald Trump is responsible for about 100,000 unnecessary deaths from Covid-19 during his presidency, according to scientists at The Lancet. John Nichols explains who in his administration made which of the deadly decisions, and who made money off of the pandemic: a topic he delves into in his new book, Coronavirus Criminals and Pandemic Profiteers.

Congressman Ro Khanna (D, CA) former deputy assistant secretary of commerce and the author of Dignity in a Digital Age: Making Tech Work for All of Us (Simon & Schuster, 2022), draws on his experience working in and representing Silicon Valley to offer a plan for guaranteeing greater equity in access to technology.
Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, and MIP will be honoring this month with daily conversations with Anthony T. Browder, author, publisher, cultural historian, artist, and educational consultant. Anthony is also the founder and director of IKG Cultural Resources and has devoted 43 years researching ancient Egyptian history, science, philosophy and culture, which is where today's discussion begins. After the discussion with Anthony, you'll hear from Congressman Ro Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley, but he's recently published a book titled “Dignity in a Digital Age: Making Tech Work for All of us.” Rep. Khanna brings us into this discussion by uplifting some key issues: unequal access to technology is disproportionately affecting Black and Brown communities, wealth is concentrated into too few hands, and too many digital jobs are hoarded in selective tech hubs – and all three of these issues result in problems for our democracy.
