In this episode of Watchin' It, Donnel and Robert break down Severance Season 2, Episode 7: Chikhai Bardo. Fun fact this episode featured a directorial debut by Jessica Gagne, and for those familiar with Severance (if not what are you doing?), she absolutely crushed it. The duo gives her high praise while also breaking down the insanity of this episode as we have a lot uncovered about Mark's wife Gemma. In other news, Donnell shares some sad news about some key figures (see the new blog for more) and his love/hate relationship with the game Balatro. Robert shares some things that he has been watching like Zero Day on Netflix with Robert De Niro and Companion. So much fun and thrills that can only be found on the Watchin It Podcast. On the rooftops of buildings all around the world a quiet revolution is taking place. Solar panels and other forms of renewable energy are replacing fossil fuel reliant devices. BlocPower CEO Donnel Baird joins Julia to talk about his company's mission to speed up bringing smart green technology to all communities, in order to vastly reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
When Donnel Baird was a child, his parents would regularly use the oven to heat their Brooklyn apartment -- a dangerous and energy-inefficient practice that's unfortunately not unique to New York City. As an adult traveling the country with the Obama for America campaign, Donnel saw countless homes and apartments wasting power and jeopardizing resident safety because of dated infrastructure. He founded BlocPower in 2014 to address this precise problem, focusing on low-income communities so often overlooked by innovative startups. This week on How I Built This Lab, Donnel talks with Guy about BlocPower's work to modernize buildings nationwide and transition them to clean energy sources. BlocPower has raised more than $100 million from Wall Street and Silicon Valley investors, and has partnered with cities across the country to create greener, safer spaces for their residents. This episode was produced by Carla Esteves and edited by John Isabella, with music by Ramtin Arablouei. Donnel Garcia walks with a vibe of confidence, but it's one that's chill and observant. For many years, he was a careworker drawn to behavioural development programs, helping figuring out what people were good at and helping them create routines to integrate them back into society. Photography was a side hobby that became a career, working with clients like lululemon, Half Moon, Livestock, Vans Vault, and more. His work has also been widely shown in print and digital publications like Street Dreams Magazine. Sharing A Living Taste studio with a few other creatives and makers, he also launched an incredible community library of art, fashion, photography, and design books and magazines called Book Section, where they can be signed out for two weeks (returns are by an honour system). He was born in the Philippines, immigrating with his parents to Canada when he was five. An only child, Donnel was often left to his own devices, catching the train downtown to explore solo and also playing sports, mainly basketball. After observing a careworker friend of his parents, he started to look into nursing programs and worked as a nurse for more than five years. It was meeting twin brothers, who quickly became his friends, that opened his world to photography, art, fashion, and music. When they eventually founded an agency, Donnel became their photographer, marking his transition into a new career and purpose. In this conversation, we wander through a wide range of topics: what people want from those who are caretaking for them; how his work as a nurse has translated into his career as an artist & photographer; observing patterns in the world, conversation & your interactions; Donnel's approach to mentoring emerging photographers; why he's taken a break from photography at the moment and recalibrating his vision; the honesty in his artistic point of view; and much more. The climate crisis is desperate to be solved. America's startup ecosystem is at the frontline of the solution. In this episode, we explore how startups are advancing breakthroughs in climate technology, making cities greener, and we establish where policy stands on VC investment and climate solutions.NVCA's Manager of Government Affairs Jonas Murphy gives an update on past, current, and future federal policy that addresses investment in climate startups and how VCs can advocate for the right policy to solve the climate crisis. Founder and CEO of BlocPower Donnel Baird grew up in a poor Brooklyn neighborhood where heating low-income housing was a challenge. His childhood experiences helped spawn the idea for BlocPower. Donnel shares how BlocPower is now working to decarbonize buildings, make cities greener, and employ and train people from vulnerable communities to work in climate tech. Co-founder of Accel Arthur Patterson won the 2022 NVCA Lifetime Achievement Award. He has mentored countless investors and shares insight gained from decades of VC experience. Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA 17th District) discusses how to make the tech industry work across places in rural America, why VC investments need to be decentralized and dispersed, and how he addresses these in his new book, Dignity in a Digital Age: Making Tech Work for All of Us.To register for our events, or to learn more about the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) visit our website.
In this episode of Capital for Good we speak with Donnel Baird '13, one of the country's most innovative entrepreneurs leading our transition to a low carbon and more inclusive economy. Baird is the founder and CEO of BlocPower, a clean tech startup based in New York City that develops portfolios of clean energy retrofit opportunities in underserved communities and connects those opportunities to investors seeking social, environmental, and financial returns. In this conversation, we discuss the early days of BlocPower and Baird's decision to seek financial backing from mainstream investors who believe squarely in the commercial model of greening urban real estate, rather than from so-called impact investors. Baird notes that although his investors, who now include Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund, Goldman Sachs, Prosperity Capital, Apple, Andressen Horowitz, Kapor Capital, and others, appreciate the social and environmental benefits that BlocPower creates — decarbonizing buildings in low-income communities reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improve health, and creates jobs — it's the commercial power of the model that will bring it to scale. Baird says “There are 125 million buildings in the United States; they account for 30 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions. If you can figure out how to decarbonize a building and move a building entirely off fossil fuels, then you can do all of the buildings on a city block, and if you can decarbonize all of the buildings on one city block, then you can decarbonize all the buildings in a city.” BlocPower is partnering with Ithaca, New York, the first city in the world to commit to green all its buildings by 2030, to decarbonize its full real estate stock. BlocPower has several other cities in the pipeline and ultimately intends to open source its approach; to become a “decarbonization platform” to supply the data, workforce, project finance, and model for others to follow suit. We are switching it up this week Folks with our very first interview. Our good friend Donnel Nelson has started his own comic book company: Back Pack Comics. We caught up with Donnel at LA Comic Con, where he had his booth promoting for the creation of his first book: The Space Between, and we had to bring him on to shill a little bit and talk about comics, movies, the MCU and where ever else the wanderlust of our conversations takes us. My mic dies half way through so R and Donnel take over for a while as I obliviously talk to myself. It's ok thought, I talk to myself often so it was a good conversation either way.
Meet Donnel & Ian. This duo has been cultivating a friendship like no other for almost a decade. After experiencing hardship caused by the pandemic, Donnel and Ian decided to start a new business in beautiful floral arrangements and installations in the Bay Area. “The most beautiful aspect about flowers is that they're not meant to stay. We honor that beauty, ground ourselves with what empowers us to be our best, and that serves as our inspiration in our creativity and our work. This is our ‘Flower Chapter'. A chapter of our adventures filled with all the good vibes and love of our ongoing and extraordinary tale of mentorship turned brotherhood. We may not know what's exactly ahead but we've always known how to bring the best out in each other. We're riding that vibe and enjoying all the beauty and fun times that bloom along the way.” Follow DJ La Flor on Instagram @djlaflor or visit their website at www.djlaflor.com
Leading analysts estimate that more than 7% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are generated by small-to-medium buildings. Too often, these buildings are terribly inefficient—wasting as much as 50% of the energy they consume, which significantly drives up energy bills—and unhealthy—with deadly viruses and other toxins circulating freely. What's more, many of these buildings primarily serve low-to-moderate income Americans, who often lack the upfront capital needed for proven upgrades. In part driven by his childhood experience with energy poverty and the related localized pollution, Donnel Baird founded BlocPower seven years ago to ensure that everyone, especially those with lower incomes and/or from other disadvantaged backgrounds, has access to greener, healthier, smarter, and more cost-effective homes and buildings. To date, BlocPower has helped to identify, finance, and upgrade more than 1,200 buildings—many in communities that had previously been left behind in our transition to a greener economy. In this episode, host Chad Reed dives deep with Donnel into how his professional experiences in community organizing and with the Obama Administration led him to his entrepreneurial efforts to decarbonize buildings in disadvantaged communities. Chad also speaks with Donnel about how best to ensure all communities—whether in neglected urban areas or deindustrialized rural areas—share in the economic benefits of a cleaner, greener economy. We hope you find this discussion as inspiring and entertaining as we did.BlocPowerWashington Post: This US city just voted to decarbonize every single buildingDonnel Baird on LinkedInEpisode recorded: October 6, 2021

In this episode, an entrepreneur who’s applying community organizing tactics and data crunching to clean energy in inner cities: Donnel Baird. Donnel is the CEO and Founder of Blocpower, a startup based in Brooklyn, New York. Blocpower helps inner-city buildings lease heat pumps, install new lighting systems, or invest in solar. And it has a piece of software to help microtarget the right buildings and make installations faster.Donnel grew up in a small apartment in Brooklyn, where he experienced energy poverty and was forced to think about how the environment directly impacts quality of life.“I think when you're poor you have to be aware of your environment and the kinds of adverse health impacts that can be caused by your environment. That's part of surviving as a poor person in America or any country. And I think that in my family we were, we were definitely super attuned to that,” explains Donnel.Later, he played a role in the green jobs push within the Obama Administration. It opened his eyes to the limitations of the green building sector.“The green buildings and energy efficiency industry is fundamentally broken. It has sales problems, it has mechanical engineering and energy efficiency audit problems. It has a huge financing problem, it has a construction and installation problem. It has an M&V problem, and if you pour $7 billion into that failed industry and hyper fragmented industry, we didn't get the results that we would've hoped,” he says.In this episode, we tell Donnel’s story of frustration, confusion and inspiration that led him to become a founder. There's a certain feeling that seems specific to modern Fire Emblem games, a sense of pride when you go into battle with your carefully leveled squad. You've come to know these characters intimately, watched their relationships with each other mature, and come to think of them as family. However, amongst the expansive cast of characters in Fire Emblem: Awakening, one particular character sticks out for having a great arc, and that's Donnel. A farm boy wearing a pot on his head, he starts out so weak most people might ditch him for some of the game's heartier characters. The people that stick with him though get to watch their good good farm boy grow up to be an absolute killing machine. His arc becomes the best example of the way you come to feel pride for these characters, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses, is doubling down on this feeling with its totally new structure. We discuss the new Fire Emblem game, the noir narrative game Night Call, and new deckbuilding roguelike Nowhere Prophet on this episode of Waypoint Radio.Discussed: Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Night Call, Steamworld Quest, Super Mario Maker 2, Nowhere Prophet See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Donnel Garcia Barroso is a Vancouver-based photographer and writer, most recently known for his work with photography-based publication, Street Dreams Magazine, and Canadian streetwear boutique, Livestock. We ask him about how he seems to have found every Filipinx in the city, and dive into the scarcity complex, being mentors with/for your peers, AI (the player), all of our shared love for bipstek, and realizing on-air that he isn't from Surrey after all. Erin and Natasha talk to BlocPower founder Donnel Baird about what social entrepreneurship means and about his effort to reduce global warming and help at-risk communities through job building. Donnel tells the hosts about trying to create the "Google of green energy" and how BlocPower not only measures its success by the revenues and returns it generates--200% year-over-year revenue growth with an eye on a billion-dollar valuation--but the overall net positive effect it has on the communities it works with via providing economic opportunities.

Andrea Catherine is back from Grounded Here to talk with us about cooking! I’m glad to be here because it helps to keep me accountable what Im eating how Im making it what’s the season accountability helps me Last week you asked me in this Springtime before you’re planting just talk about what I am cooking and preparing for yourself. started the process I roasted chickpeas this week. (https://www.groundedhere.com/healthy-cravings) soaked some dry beans I like to start with the dry beans if there is time Less processing that goes on Reduces cooking time significantly soaking them overnight rinsing that water off rinses and cook with cumin coriander fennel could add other spices tumeric ginger less gassey reduces that time (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) similarly cook a legume with those spices pepper and ginger and tumeric spices are anti-gas digest better “beans, the beans the more you eat the more you toot” if we aren’t cooking them with spices cook them with those spices or some other spices that will aid in the digestive process Even black pepper will help I was following I like Kate O’Donnel’s The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook: A Seasonal Guide to Eating and Living Well (https://amzn.to/2HAMOgu) (https://yogahealer.com/podcasts/) guest shows you can find her book try this on your own toss the cooked beans with some apple cider vinegar cook with spices oil let them roast the oven was about 400º didn’t take very long toss every 15 minutes THey were very tasty! One of the reasons were cooking them now besides because they are a storage crop don’t have to harvest them fresh drying can attribute to the flatuence problem ehlp to relive that dry quality counteracts the wet quality of springtime using eating foods that are warm dry cooked can start to balance what we are experiencing in our environment If you still have dry skin high anxiety a lot of gas to begin with might not be the best But overall it’s a ood time of year for us to roast some chickpeas eating them over some rice root vegetables curry tomatoes coconut milk cilantro enjoying that in my lunches new experiment to roast some chickpeas restaurants are putting them on their menus you can put spices Play with it! cooking the beans yourself pepper cumin fennel lower and slower Let me ask, this might be a dumb quesiton but do you roast them on a cooking pan, roast them in the oven right? Yes, you can roast them slower, keep your eye on them maybe like 30 minutes spread them on a cookie sheet tossed them every 10 or fifteen minutes cayenne pepper extra ginger salad toss with some oil curry snack on them mix with nuts A lot of restaurants now are putting them on a cheese plate another way to approach the chick pea favorite ones to cook with Indian dishes roasted something different someone who reaches for snacks a lot and reach for snacks that are not going to serve your body its a nice alternative high protein I also want to say if you do an acid/alkaline diet they are on the alkaline side. I love this because I love chick peas and I am definitely snacker. I definitely snack a lot especially at night. I’m really bad about prepping my meals I have been bugging my husband to make me Leanna Tu (https://organicgardenerpodcast.com/instagram-nutritionologie/) and I was like that was so easy to do and this sounds like that so easy turn it thrilled with batch tasking what do I want for lunch or for a salad when you have a chunk of Support this podcast

The Super Bowl was this weekend, and while a just universe would have allowed a team other than the New England Patriots to win for once, 2017 has shown that world is not ours. Congrats, Patriots fans. You won another one. Back in the world of podcasts, Managing Editor Danielle Riendeau was battling sickness this morning, so Social Editor Danika Harrod joined Senior Reporter Patrick Klepek and Editor-in-Chief Austin Walker to give an update on the search for Donnel in Fire Emblem: Heroes, react to the beta for Ghost Recon Wildlands, discuss how Nioh seems to be separating itself from Dark Souls, and dip into The Question Bucket. We are mostly familiar with the hermeneutics of suspicion. But what about a hermeneutics of curiosity? In his latest book Relational Freedom: Emergent Properties of the Interpersonal Field (Routledge, 2015), Dr. Donnel Stern discusses the ways in which a spirit of mutual curiosity between analyst and analysand can transform the field between them and alter their relationships to each other and themselves. Continuing the groundbreaking work of Unformulated Experience and the more recent Partners in Thought, Relational Freedom showcases Dr. Stern's ability to arrange clinical case studies, a rich history of psychoanalytic thought, and contemporary theoretical critique in such a way as opens the reader's mind to new conceptions of the priority of feeling in the interpersonal/relational field. Along the way, he paints a picture of enactment (the interpersonalisation of dissociation) and how the analytic dyad can handle enactments in a fashion that frees up the analyst and analysand to see their relationship in a new light. Meditating on the influence of interpersonal and relational thinkers, such as Erich Fromm and Harry Stack Sullivan, Dr. Stern highlights the tension between the evidence-based, scientific idea of psychoanalysis and the broader, less empirical takes on this protean practice. Incorporating the thought of Hans-Georg Gadamer, he proposes that we “recognize that the hermeneutic position about the study and evaluation of psychoanalytic treatment is a valid way of thinking about these problems, and one that contradicts the objectivist agenda of systematic empirical research.” Aware of the challenges this recognition may entail, Dr. Stern spends a portion of this interview discussing an issue many humanistic analysts may face: namely, that of insurance providers requesting objective measures of improvement of health. While illuminating his theory of the mind as it exists within the field, Dr. Stern also discusses the personal aspect of his career. We learn about his educational journey to psychoanalysis, as well as his love for literature. Dr. Stern emphasizes the creative aspect of psychoanalysis in a fashion appropriately creative, and consequently engaging. Learn more about your ad choices.
