What will the future hold for our wild horses with the prospect of Project 2025 looming over our country? The 2026 White House budget request represents an unprecedented threat, removing protections that have safeguarded wild horses from slaughter since 2017. Meanwhile, the BLM plans to eliminate entire herds in Wyoming, despite legal appeals still pending.   Project 2025 calls for the “humane disposal” of these animals, and this budget appears to follow that path. With over 10,000 additional horses scheduled for removal before 2026, holding facilities will be overwhelmed, setting the stage for mass euthanasia behind closed doors. Now is the time to call your representatives and tell them wild horses must remain protected.   Get full show notes and more information here: https://www.wildhoofbeats.com/54

The House-passed version: A. Would cut off some or all food assistance for 11 million people (4 million of those are kids) due to subjecting new groups of people (parents of young kids, older people, people who live in parts of the country where jobs are scarce) to additional paperwork requirements. B. Eliminates the national guarantee that whether you live in New York or Mississippi, you won't go hungry. This has been the bottom line of food support and anti-poverty in the US for 60 years. Now, states will be required to foot part of the bill for SNAP, which many of them can't afford. C. Guts SNAP as one of our best anti-recession tools – it keeps recessions from becoming depressions. SNAP immediately gets small dollars to the people who need money most, and it's spent nearly instantly in local communities. Funding changes and cuts will doubly punish states during recessions. That's important now, as we deal with economic uncertainty and a food safety net (food pantries, free school lunch, farmer grant programs) that have already been gutted by DOGE so can't step in to help.  The website for the Center for American Progress is www.AmericanProgress.org and their handle on BlueSky is @americanprogress.bsky.social‬. While retirees receive a modest one-time bonus, active state employees are promised a small raise this year but not the next. The House also aims to eliminate 3,000 vacant state positions, exacerbating the already high vacancy rate in government jobs. Despite a minor income tax reduction, decreasing public service staff may lead to diminished public services and efficiency, raising concerns about public safety and overall satisfaction.

The Ohio House unveiled its version of the state budget this week. The two-year spending plan makes several changes to proposals put forth by Governor Mike DeWine in his budget. One major change involves funding to K-12 public schools, with House Republicans signaling the intention to move away from the bipartisan Fair School Funding Plan agreed to in 2021. The six-year plan attempted to overhaul the state's heavy reliance on property taxes to fund schools. That system has been ruled unconstitutional four times because the Ohio Supreme Court said it created educational disparities. The House Budget, however, did include $600 million in bonds to go towards plans to build a new domed stadium for the Cleveland Browns in Brook Park. The Haslam Sports Group sought the money as part of a larger plan that includes the stadium and a surrounding mixed-use development. We will dig into the House budget proposal to begin Friday's "Sound of Ideas Reporters Roundtable.

1. House Budget Victory - The House passed a significant tax cut bill by a slim margin, with President Trump actively whipping votes to secure its passage. - This is the first step in the budget reconciliation process, which allows certain budget-related legislation to pass with a simple majority in the Senate, bypassing the filibuster. 2. Cartels Escalate War Zone at Southern Border - A Texas rancher was killed by a suspected cartel IED near the Mexican border, highlighting the increasing violence and danger posed by cartels. - The discussion emphasizes the need to treat cartels as terrorist organizations and take aggressive action against them. 3. Dems Dig in on Boys in Girls' Sports - The Department of Justice, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, is enforcing federal laws to prevent boys from competing in girls' sports. - States like Maine, California, and Minnesota are resisting these federal mandates, leading to potential legal battles. Rep. Cliff Bentz represents Oregon’s 2nd District in the U.S. House, covering most of the state east of the Cascades. He’s the only Republican in the state’s congressional delegation, and he voted in favor of the House budget resolution Tuesday that would mean nearly $900 billion in cuts to Medicaid over the next 10 years. Statewide, about a third of Oregonians rely on the Oregon Health Plan, which is the way people in the state receive Medicaid. Bentz, like many others in his party, has held town halls that have drawn crowds of angry constituents who raised big questions about the Republican party supporting Trump’s cuts to the federal government led by Elon Musk and the overreach of the executive branch. Bentz joins us to talk about his vote and how he’s approaching his job at this political moment.

Republicans in Congress are moving to pass a budget plan to advance President Donald Trump's domestic agenda. On Wednesday, the Senate voted 50-47 to take up the outline of a budget that would increase immigration and military spending but does not include an extension of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The vote is a key step in the budget reconciliation process, which allows a party to bypass the Senate's 60-vote filibuster rule to pass eligible budget legislation with a simple majority vote. However, Republicans in the House and Senate are advancing separate bills and will need to approve identical resolutions to use the reconciliation process.
