I think there are several things that link us together. First, the DXCC program IS an ARRL program. You can't separate the two. DXPeditions exist because they have the funding, the need, and the acceptance by the DXCC Desk to be “legal' and will count towards DXCC programs rewards and acknowledgement. Secondly, there is no other organization that works to protect the spectrum like the ARRL does. There have been countless attempts to procure parts of our spectrum that have been defeated due to the actions of the ARRL. The current work to remove restrictions for homeowners another example of the ARRL at work.Finally, David is a DXer and a contester! He works the DX and is the DX. He is also a CW fanatic. DXer and video producer Bob Allphin K4UEE released the K1N Navssa DXpedition documentary on DVD in 2015, a few months after the highly successful DXpedition itself. HamRadioNow's Gary K4AAQ did the editing and voiceover for the production. DVD sales were good enough, but now it's time to release the program to the world on YouTube, free to watch for everyone. Dov Gavish 4Z4DX is one of Israel's best known amateurs outside of Israel, and avid DXer and DXpeditioner. Even before Parks on the Air or Summits on the Air, Dov had a rig in the car ready to go on a moment's notice.  While CW is his favorite operating mode, Dov prefers whatever mode works to make the contact.  4Z4DX is my QSO Today.

Many thanks to SRAA contributor, Dan Greenall, who shares the following recordings and notes:Broadcaster: Radio Canada International Interval Signal Series 1970's Date of recording: Circa 1970s Frequency: 9.625 MHz Reception location: Ancaster, Ontario, Canada Receiver and antenna: Hallicrafters S-52 or Realistic DX-150A and a longwire antenna Notes: Back in the early 1970s, Radio Canada International ran a very popular interval signal series on their SWL Digest program. This was hopefully to help DXer's identify that sought after station. I recall recording a few of these programs, and while going over one of my old cassette tapes recently, I came across a segment where they were presenting a number of African interval signals. Subsequently, I have uncovered five additional segments, or at least, portions of them. As these were originally recorded with an open mike to the speaker of the receiver, some room noise (voices) may be detected, as well as small amounts of unedited material near the ends of some of the segments. These were recorded at Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, likely on 9625 kHz.

"Volcano Radio. Ascension Island. The exotic names drew my attention, and Ascension Island especially captured my imagination, as I'd never heard of any such place. I learned that it's an isolated volcanic island located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about halfway between Brazil and Angola. The British used it as a staging ground during the Falklands War; now it hosts a Royal Air Force station, a NASA tracking station, and what's sometimes called “the worst golf course in the world.”  "Volcano Radio began broadcasting in 1958 under the Ascension call sign, ZD8VR, Volcano Radio. Though it was a British station, it was funded for many years by the U.S. Armed Forces Radio Service, enabling it to run around the clock, at least for a time. "On May 5, 1979, Gary Deacon, a shortwave enthusiast and DXer in Capetown, South Africa, captured this audio recording of Volcano Radio's broadcast. As he noted in his Cape DX blog, “It was a surprise to receive the 500 watt station with a remarkable peak from across the South Atlantic, over 4 430 km / 2 754 miles away!” "As I listened to Gary's vintage, staticky recording, I was drawn first to the British radio host's sign-off announcement, followed by a recording of “God Save The Queen” that stops mid-stream. After all the static, the sudden silence was blissful. I decided to preserve the end of the original audio in my mix. I also decided to flow a brief, heavily processed field recording of molten lava under “God Save The Queen,” because, why not? It's Volcano Radio! "I listened more deeply to the original recording and became fascinated with the jazz show host's charismatic wrap-up, when he says, “Then there's the news that the clock on the wall is beginning to strike its magical hour, when all good things must come to an end.” I lifted the phrase “when all good things must come to an end” and seeded it through my mix, processing and transforming it in different ways.  "The more I worked with the original audio material, the more it suggested an experimental, noise-music treatment for this remix. There are changes going on at Radio Berlin International. In PUBSPOT we look at new Fine-Tuning Group's Proceedings 1989 which contains 27 articles from real specialists. John Bryant is one of the editors and explains why they went into so much detail. This edition is both for beginners and advanced alike. Bryant wrote a very practical article on the Beverage antenna. John Fisher has an excellent article on broadcasting in Brazil and Hans Johnson on broadcasting in the Middle East. A lot of information may be “dated” in 2020, but for someone who travels and wants to kill some time reading about SWL, they are a great resource. It's like sitting down with a veteran DXer and picking his/her brain. The authors were “giants” of the hobby back in the day. All the books were available on a single CD-ROM for US$10 from Harold Sellers of the Ontario DX Association..
