In today’s episode, we talk to Coordinator Stephanie Morningstar and John Deloatch (JD) Giraldo of the Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust. Their vision is to advance land sovereignty in the northeast region through permanent and secure land tenure for Indigenous, Black, Latinx, and Asian farmers and land stewards who will use the land in a sacred manner that honors our ancestors dreams - for sustainable farming, human habitat, ceremony, native ecosystem restoration, and cultural preservation. Stephanie Morningstar, of the Oneida Nation, is an herbalist, soil and seed steward, scholar, student, and Earth Worker dedicated to decolonizing and liberating minds, hearts, and land- one plant, person, ecosystem, and non-human being at a time. Stephanie is the Coordinator of the Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust, grows medicines and food for her community at Sky World Apothecary & Farm; and mobilizes knowledge for Indigenous-led climate change and food sovereignty research projects for Global Water Futures. John Deloatch Giraldo is an Earthworker that focuses on connection to the land, healing with the land and education of how natural systems work. He is guided by Freedom Loving Plants, also known as weeds, and the stories of ancestral plants. His dream is to have green spaces where people can pass on family and cultural traditions as well as create new experiences. He believes it’s critical to have spaces where people can pass on their stories and ways of being in respect to Mother Nature, especially for people who are migrating from different Mother Lands to those who are being raised here so they can maintain a sense of culture, tradition and sovereignty. Hi and welcome to the Designing Open Democracy Podcast. We are an Australian based forum keeping track of democracy innovations in Australia and around the world. In the background of the banking royal commission starting at 2017 and the uncovering of banking misconduct by the big four banks in Australia, there is a need for the public to be able to trust that corporations will work in the interest of all stakeholders. This podcast recorded and hosted by Alexar on March 2020, was a talk by Anthony McMullen from Co-operative Bonds, explaining how we can step beyond Corporate Social Responsibility towards a corporate structure with a fundamentally more democratic economic structure. Given the situation around the world with the global pandemic in 2020, social distancing requirements meant we had to record this episode by video conferencing. So audio quality will be different compared to other episodes. The first half of this event with be a short primer by Anthony McMullen to get newcomers up to speed about what Co-operatives is and why it matters. Celebrating 45 years of Friends of the Earth. Walking tall amongst giants - FoE's work in forests. Friends of the Earth came to forests later in the game and was strong from the 1990s via old growth forests campaigns. The Builders Laborers Federation was a union in Australia, representing those workers without a trade who did all the hard yards on the building site. Through their strong community links, they heard lots about the effects of inappropriate development on normal folks, and came up with the "Green Ban" as a response. They simply refused to work on projects that were socially or environmentally damaging. The effects of the Green Bans are still around today - the historic district of the rocks in Sydney is only there due to BLF action. The BLF was deregistered by the government of the day, and smashed. One of the things to come out of the rubble was the Earthworker Co-operative, which is designed to transef the ownership and control of work itself into the hands of the workers. We hope you enjoy this interview.

Earthworker is establishing a network of worker-owned cooperatives committed to sustainable enterprise throughout Australia. They believe social and environmental exploitation are intertwined, and that the problems of climate change, job insecurity and growing inequality must be tackled simultaneously, through greater grassroots economic ownership. They have already established Redgum, a worker owned cleaners co-operative in Melbourne, and are in the final stages of establishing the Earthworker Energy Manufacturing Cooperative (formerly Eureka’s Future). The Latrobe Valley has been the heart of coal fire power generation in Victoria for decades, but as power stations like Hazelwood shut down they leave towns without jobs or a longterm plan for what's next. The Valley has become central to a nationwide discussion around a just transition - how to transition away from coal in a way that is fair for everyone. For this episode, Bean spent some time with people on the frontlines of the fight for a just transition away from coal - Wendy Farmer from Voices of the Valley and Dan Musil from Earthworker. While Voices of the Valley is focused more on community health and Earthworker is working on setting up a co-operatively owned solar hot water heater factory, they both are advocates of community ownership. We discuss the historical context of this transition, their current work, and the role that community energy can play in a just transition. http://www.votv.org.au/ http://earthworkercooperative.com.au/eurekas-future/
