Hundreds of protesters have gathered this week at Pine Gap in the Northern Territory, calling for the defence facility to be shut down. They're concerned about the expansion of the secretive base. Pine Gap is about 18 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs and while it was originally sold to the public as a space base, the joint Australian-US facility has since expanded to become a major intelligence and surveillance facility. Its mission and secrecy have made it the target of countless protests.

In this segment, we hear from Pilar (Chair of 3CR Board), Rachel (Manager of 3CR) and Gab (Current Affairs Coordinator). Jo is a campaign manager from the Wilderness Society, with deep experience in forests and campaigning against logging in Victoria. This year, Earth Matters is thirty years old! And 3CR, our proud parent, is 50 years old! We're celebrating by digging into the archives, tipping our hat to past presenters who paved the way with hard-hitting and crucial content on environmental current affairs. Have you heard of Pine Gap? Most likely you have. You may even have heard about the fight against the construction of the US military base in the mid-80s. In this episode we'll take a trip to those days, before even Earth Matters was born. A former intelligence officer who resigned over the Iraq War has told SBS it's indisputable that Australian intelligence is being used by Israel and the United States in their war against Iran.
