Lawyer turned journalist Eileen Ormsby on her journey deeper and deeper into the internet's 'evil twin', where, under the cloak of anonymity, people sell buy and share anything a person is willing to pay for Eileen Ormsby had just returned to university to study journalism when her friend told her about a website called The Silk Road.Created by American libertarian, Ross Ulbricht, it was essentially like any other e-commerce marketplace, the kind that people use to order books and homewares, except that it sold illicit drugs and fake ids.Eileen became fascinated with the platform, how it operated, who used it and where existed -- in a secretive part of the internet colloquially known as 'the dark web'.As Eileen journeyed further and further into the darkest corners of the underbelly of the internet, she came across scammers, hit men and horrendous truths, some of which spilled out into her real life. This episode of Conversations explores the dark web, Ross Ulbricht, libertarian, drug dealing, the deep web, FBI, CIA, AFP, undercover agents, Facebook, Meta, Google, Instagram, social media, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, AlphaBay, illicit drugs, addiction, murder, hitman, scams, bitcoin, crypto, crypto currency, investigative journalism, presidential pardon, assassination.
Cybercrime writer Eileen Ormsby delves into the chilling world of the BESA Mafia, a purported online hitman service. What unfolds is a story of modern folklore, a sophisticated scam targeting those with the darkest intentions, and a relentless pursuit of exposing the world of online assassinations-for-hire in the digital age. In this episode, we explore the stranger-than-fiction tale of hitmen services being sold on the darkest corners of the internet. Show Notes Ep 217 of Australian True Crime with Meshel Laurie and Emily WebbAustralian journalist Eileen Ormsby literally wrote the book on the Dark Web. In fact, she's written 7 books about it, but it was her first book, “Silk Road”, released in 2014, about the so-called eBay of hard drugs, that began the exposure of the darkest corners of the internet to the world.A year after Silk Road's release, Eileen sat in a courtroom looking at a man who was once the internet's most wanted and illusive trafficker of violent child abuse material. His online name was “Lux”, but his true identity was shocking.Book tickets to the Melbourne Podcast Festival forensics show hereBook tickets to the Yarraville Rowland Legge show here Pre order Meshel's book “CSI Told You Lies” here.Buy Eileen Ormsby's books about the Dark Web here You can support us with a one-off contribution here. You can become a patron here. You can subscribe to Calm Ya Farm here. You can visit the Calm Ya Farm website here. In 2011 the Silk Road paved the way for selling drugs on the dark web. Here, anyone anywhere could buy any drugs they wanted safely and anonymously. What looked like an innocent libertarian marketplace for users had a dark underbelly. Eileen Ormsby, journalist and author of 8 books covering the dark web came on the show to discuss what was the Silk Road. Ormsby covered everything from law enforcement, to Dread Pirate Roberts, and even the Mongoose. It’s early 2016 when a description of American woman Amy Allwine is posted to the Dark Web: “She’s about five foot six, she looks about 200 pounds. She should be driving a dark green Toyota Sienna Minivan. This bitch has torn my family apart by sleeping with my husband (who then left me), and is stealing clients from my business. I want her dead.” This post was in fact a call-out for someone to murder Amy Allwine, and be paid 13 Bitcoin (approximately $190,000) in return. But Amy hadn’t slept with anyone’s husband. She wasn’t stealing anyone’s clients. She had no enemies. So who could want her dead? The police would eventually discover who wanted Amy dead. But they were too late. In today’s episode Jessie speaks with Eileen Ormsby. Eileen is a lawyer, author and freelance journalist based in Melbourne. Her book, The Darkest Web, attempts to uncover the web's dark underbelly: a place of hitmen for hire, red rooms, hurtcore sites and markets that will sell anything a person is willing to pay for - including another person’s life.
