In 1931, Hazel Ying Lee, a nineteen-year-old American daughter of Chinese immigrants, sat in on a friend's flight lesson. It changed her life. In less than a year, a girl with a wicked sense of humor, a newfound love of flying, and a tough can-do attitude earned her pilot's license and headed for China to help against invading Japanese forces. In time, Hazel would become the first Asian American to fly with the Women Airforce Service Pilots. As thrilling as it may have been, it wasn't easy. In America, Hazel felt the oppression and discrimination of the Chinese Exclusion Act. In China's field of male-dominated aviation she was dismissed for being a woman, and for being an American. But in service to her country, Hazel refused to be limited by gender, race, and impossible dreams. Frustrated but undeterred she forged ahead, married Clifford Louie, a devoted and unconventional husband who cheered his wife on, and gave her all for the cause achieving more in her short remarkable life than even she imagined possible. American Flygirl (Citadel Press, 2024) is the untold account of a spirited fighter and an indomitable hidden figure in American history. She broke every common belief about women. She challenged every social restriction to endure and to succeed. And against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Hazel Ying Lee reached for the skies and made her mark as a universal and unsung hero whose time has come. Learn more about your ad choices. Susan Tate Ankeny is a nonfiction World War 2 history book author whose works include 'The Girl and the Bombardier' and her newest book, 'American Flygirl'. 'American Flygirl' recounts the inspiring story of Hazel Ying Lee, the first Asian American woman to earn a pilot's license and fly with the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) despite the widespread anti-Asian sentiment back then. Hazel refused to be deterred by discrimination due to her gender and her status as the daughter of Chinese immigrants. Just one year after sitting in on a friend's flight lesson, she earned her pilot's license and was on the way to the front against the Japanese. She would posthumously receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for her extraordinary service and patriotism. Vernice “FlyGirl” Armour had a childhood dream of being a police officer on horseback, a dream that evolved into becoming America's first Black female combat pilot. She served two tours in Iraq, piloting an attack helicopter and now travels the country as a speaker and consultant. In this episode of Flip Your Script with Kristi Piehl, FlyGirl shares her journey of persistence, resilience and hunger for success and how she faced rejection multiple times before achieving her goals.
In "American Flygirl" Susan Tate Ankeny shows how a young girl with a fascination for flying became the first female Asian-American pilot to fly for the military. Hazel Ying Lee was born in Portland, but came of age at a time when the deck was stacked against people like her. Hazel never let discrimination or expectation shatter her dreams of flying for a living. She flew in China to defend her ancestral homeland from attack, then became a WASP for the US Airforce during World War II. Though Hazel died at a young age in an aviation accident, Ankeny argues that the lessons of her life for today's society must be understood.Susan Tate Ankeny's website can be found at https://susantateankeny.com/Support our show at https://patreon.com/axelbankhistory**A portion of every contribution is given to a charity for children's literacy** "Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistoryThe Happy Writer with Marissa MeyerAuthors, from debuts to bestsellers, chat about books, writing, publishing, and joy. Capt. Sarah Gardner has been a full time fishing guide for over 27 years. Along with her husband, Capt. Brian Horsley, they are the go to guides for fly fishing in the area surrounding Outer Banks, NC. Sarah & Brian both run 23 foot Jones Brother boats and target Cobia, Redfish, False Albacore, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, & Sharks on the fly. After getting her Bachelor's degree in Illustration from Moore College of Art in 1987, Sarah worked in advertising for several years, but she never felt comfortable working inside. To be around other like-minded people and earn extra money, she took an evening sales position at Anglers Sport Center, a big outfitter in Maryland. Shortly thereafter, out of the blue, the legendary Lefty Kreh called and would eventually take her under his wing and help her flourish into the great writer and spokesperson she is today. Years later, Lefty was the photographer at Sarah & Brian's wedding and their relationship continued until his passing a couple of years ago. Sarah is known by her peers as being a hardy, tough, badass of a human whether on the water, in the woods, or competing in Ironman races. Not only is she “fishy” on the boat but her love for teaching and educating is extremely inspiring. As people look up to Joan Wulff and Kathy Beck, many view Sarah as a role model and shining example on how hard work, dedication, and chasing your passions can lead to a extremely fulfilling life. Thanks for coming on the podcast, Sarah!
Sherri L. Smith, author of the critically acclaimed story Flygirl, and Elizabeth Wein, author of the award-winning book Code Name Verity, join forces in AMERICAN WINGS (G.P. Putnam's Sons) to shed light on an important and lesser-known chapter in Black aviation history and Black contributions to aviation during the Golden Age of Flight. In the years between World War I and World War II, aviation fever was everywhere, including among Black Americans. But what hope did a Black person have of learning to fly in a country constricted by prejudice and Jim Crow laws, where some previous Black aviators like Bessie Coleman had to move to France to earn their wings? AMERICAN WINGS follows a group of determined Black Americans: Cornelius Coffey and Johnny Robinson, skilled auto mechanics; Janet Harmon Bragg, a nurse; and Willa Brown, a teacher and social worker. Together, they created a flying club and built their own airfield on Chicago's South Side. As the U.S. hurtled toward World War II, they established a school to train new pilots, teaching both Black and white students together and proving, in a time when the U.S. military was still segregated, that successful integration was possible. Complete with black-and-white photographs throughout, AMERICAN WINGS brings to light a hidden history of pioneering Black men and women who, with grit and resilience, battled powerful odds for an equal share of the sky. ABOUT THE ELIZABETH WEIN: Elizabeth Wein (LEFT) is a recreational pilot and the owner of about a thousand maps. She is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Code Name Verity, as well as the novels Rose Under Fire; Black Dove, White Raven; The Pearl Thief; and The Enigma Game; as well as the nonfiction book A Thousand Sisters: The Heroic Airwomen of the Soviet Union in World War II. Visit her online at elizabethwein.com. ABOUT THE SHERRI L SMITH: Sherri L. Smith (RIGHT) is the author of several novels for young adults, including the critically acclaimed The Blossom and the Firefly, Flygirl, Orleans, and Pasadena, as well as the middle-grade novel The Toymaker's Apprentice. Hard to believe, but there was a time when flying was … glamourous. Not just for passengers, but for the crew, especially the stewardesses, as they were called. They were the goddesses of the air, beautifully groomed, alluring, international jet setters. Of course they also dealt with unwanted advances, brutal hours in high heels, and a constant attention to weight and appearance. It was a simpler time, but a fascinating one, according to Ann Hood, author of Fly Girl: A Memoir. Stewardesses, as alluring as they seemed, were so much more than busty sexpots, which, by the way, is Mo's stripper name. In addition to being a former flight attendant with TWA, Ann Hood is the editor of Knitting Yarns: Writers on Knitting and the bestselling author of The Book That Matters Most, The Knitting Circle, The Red Thread, Comfort, and An Italian Wife, among other works. She is the recipient of two Pushcart Prizes, a Best American Spiritual Writing Award, a Best American Food Writing Award, a Best American Travel Writing Award, and the Paul Bowles Prize for Short Fiction. We're jumping ahead in the process in this excerpt from my interview with book publicist Jennifer Coburn. Once you publish your book, you're probably going to want to sell it. Some publishers will include a budget for book launch promotion, and others won't. In this clip, Jennifer, who is the author of eight of her own books, worked as Robing Kardon's publicist for the launch of her Flygirl series. Jenn tells us what that process and timeline look like, and how much it might cost. All things you'll want to think about when envisioning the full picture of what writing and publishing your book looks like. Coming from a legacy of military heroes, FlyGirl knew early on she wanted to follow in her family's footsteps and serve her country. Her desire to be a police officer led her to enroll in the army during her college years. One day, seeing a black woman in a flight suit opened her eyes to limitless possibilities, and from that day forward FlyGirl worked tirelessly to become the best fighter pilot she could be. Though a mountain of challenges stood in her way such as discrimination, sexism, and numerous rejections, she embraced her tenacious determination to achieve her dreams. Having cultivated a life of gritty perseverance, FlyGirl now applies strategies she learned in the military to business. Much of her coaching centers around making gutsy moves. In her experience as an executive coach and consultant, she encourages leaders to make decisions that push them outside their comfort zone every day. This courage allows people to push past what she calls the “gutsy gap,” that challenge that seems insurmountable. By taking calculated action even in the face of fear, FlyGirl helps activate leaders towards their highest potential. Of course, she leads by her powerful example.Main TopicsVernice's military family background inspired her career in the Marines and law enforcement (01:00)How seeing a black woman in a flight suit changed the course of her life (02:48)Through willful determination, she excelled in flight school (05:19)How Vernice dealt with discrimination and sexism in the Marines (06:20)Tips for success at any stage of business (09:50)Making gutsy moves in business and on the battlefield (13:00) Episode Linkshttps://vernicearmour.com/ Connect with Vernice:https://www.facebook.com/VerniceFLYGIRLArmourhttps://twitter.com/VerniceArmourhttps://www.youtube.com/user/VerniceArmourhttps://www.instagram.com/verniceflygirlarmour/Connect with Dave:https://www.daveliniger.comhttps://www.instagram.com/davelinigerofficial/https://www.facebook.com/DaveLLinigerhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/dave-liniger-578a7517/Listen, rate, and subscribe!

S4E38 We return to London's Natural History Museum. This time however, we're in the bowels of the Diptera collection with flygirl herself, Dr Erica McAlister. If you think you recognise that name it's because Erica has graced the airwaves several times before including BBC Radio 4's The Infinite Monkey Cage and The Life Scientific. As you'll hear in this episode, Erica needs help from those of us who regularly handle bats. If you're a bat carer or a bat worker who undertakes bat box checks or trapping surveys, please start collecting all bat ectoparasites from bats and place them into vials of 100% ethanol. Make detailed notes about the species of bat they came from, the sex of the bat, located of ectoparasite & what the bat was doing at the time. A location & the habitat is also a must. As much info as possible! You can then post your specimens to:Dr Erica McAlister,Senior Curator; Diptera,Life Sciences (Insects Division),The Natural History Museum,Cromwell Road,London SW7 5BD.Your specimens will be added to the collection and your name will eventually appear in the digital collections.Bat and bird fly recording scheme websiteSee Piotr Naskrecki's bat fly image hereA short video of Erica talking about bat flies along with more photos hereEthanol can be purchased hereSample tubes can be Thank you to Wildcare and Wildlife Acoustics for sponsoring the BatChat Podcast in 2022-2023.Quote BATCHAT at the Wildcare checkout for 10% off all bat detectors!Visit wildlifeacoustics.com to learn more.Wildlife Acoustics Wildcare Support the showPlease leave us a review or star rating if your podcast app allows it because it helps us to reach a wider audience so that we can spread the word about how great bats are.
