Lawyer turned journalist Eileen Ormsby on her journey deeper and deeper into the internet's 'evil twin', where, under the cloak of anonymity, people sell buy and share anything a person is willing to pay for Eileen Ormsby had just returned to university to study journalism when her friend told her about a website called The Silk Road.Created by American libertarian, Ross Ulbricht, it was essentially like any other e-commerce marketplace, the kind that people use to order books and homewares, except that it sold illicit drugs and fake ids.Eileen became fascinated with the platform, how it operated, who used it and where existed -- in a secretive part of the internet colloquially known as 'the dark web'.As Eileen journeyed further and further into the darkest corners of the underbelly of the internet, she came across scammers, hit men and horrendous truths, some of which spilled out into her real life. This episode of Conversations explores the dark web, Ross Ulbricht, libertarian, drug dealing, the deep web, FBI, CIA, AFP, undercover agents, Facebook, Meta, Google, Instagram, social media, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, AlphaBay, illicit drugs, addiction, murder, hitman, scams, bitcoin, crypto, crypto currency, investigative journalism, presidential pardon, assassination.
If you've committed any internet crimes lately, you probably shouldn't have paid for them with Bitcoin. While many crypto-evangelists have long thought of digital currency as a means of buying legal and illicit goods on the web with total anonymity, the fact is that nearly all cryptocurrency transactions leave a digital trail behind them that can point to your true identity. No matter how hard you try to hide, a dedicated sleuth with the right resources can find you. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED senior cybersecurity writer and author of the book Tracers in the Dark digs into all the ways investigators, government agents, and hackers can track down criminals online by “following the money” exchanged in cryptocurrency transactions. This show originally aired on February 9, 2023.Show NotesAndy's book is Tracers in the Dark: The Global Hunt for the Crime Lords of Cryptocurrency. In this bonus episode of the Cyberlaw Podcast, I interview Andy Greenberg, long-time WIRED reporter, about his new book, “Tracers in the Dark: The Global Hunt for the Crime Lords of Cryptocurrency.” This is Andy's second author interview on the Cyberlaw Podcast. He also came on to discuss an earlier book, Sandworm: A New Era of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin's Most Dangerous Hackers. They are both excellent cybersecurity stories. “Tracers in the Dark”, I suggest, is a kind of sequel to the Silk Road story, which ends with Ross Ulbricht, the Dread Pirate Roberts, pinioned in a San Francisco library with his laptop open to an administrator's page on the Silk Road digital black market. At that time, cryptocurrency backers believed that Ulbricht's arrest was a fluke, and that properly implemented, bitcoin was anonymous and untraceable. Greenberg's book explains, story by story, how that illusion was trashed by smart cops and techies (including our own Nick Weaver!) who showed that the blockchain's “forever” records make it almost impossible to avoid attribution over time. Among those who fall victim to the illusion of anonymity are two federal officers who helped pursue Ulbricht—and to rip him off; the administrator of AlphaBay, Silk Road's successor dark market, an alleged Russian hacker who made so much money hacking Mt. Gox that he had to create his own exchange to launder it all, and hundreds of child sex abuse consumers and producers. It is a great story, and Andy brings it up to date in the interview as we dig into two massive, multi-billion seizures made possible by transaction tracing. In fact, for all the colorful characters in the book, the protagonist is really Chainalysis and its competitors, who have turned tracing into a kind of science. We close the talk by exploring Andy's deeply mixed feelings about both the world envisioned by cryptocurrency's evangelists and the way Chainalysis is saving us from that world.

Journalist Andy Greenberg is no stranger to the murky world of cryptocurrency. The senior writer for WIRED and longtime cybersecurity journalist was one of the last reporters to interact with pseudonymous Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto before they evidently ceased communications. In his new book, “Tracers in the Dark: The Global Hunt for the Crime Lords of Cryptocurrency,” Andy follows the gripping story of IRS special agent Tigran Gambaryan as he follows the money to zero in on some of the most mysterious and monstrous criminals in the cyber underground. -------Don't miss the inaugural episode of WE'RE IN! Season 2 to hear more from Andy on: * How Tigran joined forces with expert investigators and cryptographers to jettison misconceptions about the anonymity of major cryptocurrencies, exposing alleged criminal masterminds in the process* The genesis of successful crypto tracing and analysis firms like Chainalysis* The twisted motivations of those who founded infamous dark web emporiums like AlphaBay and Silk Road-------Links: * https://andygreenberg.net/* https://www.wired.com/* https://www.synack.com/* https://readme.security/

In this very special edition of the Future of Money, Henri Arslanian and former special agent for the IRS, Tigran Gambaryan, discuss the intersection of cryptocurrency and illicit activities. Drawing on his wealth of experience working on teams that investigated major scandals in the crypto ecosystem, from Mt. On Tuesday, the US government seized $3.6 billion in bitcoin from the 2016 Bitfinex hack and arrested two individuals, Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, on charges of money laundering. Tom Robinson, cofounder and chief scientist at the blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, breaks down how law enforcement was able to seize the BTC, what techniques the alleged money launderers used to avoid capture, and who could have pulled off the initial hack. Show highlights: background on the 2016 Bitfinex hack who was arrested this week and why how the US government gained access to the private keys in Lichtenstein's and Morgan's control why AlphaBay, a now-defunct darknet website, was crucial to law enforcement's effort to track down the stolen Bitfinex funds what money laundering techniques were used to cash out the stolen Bitfinex funds before this week's arrests whether, as blockchain analytics technology advances, it will always catch up to be able to trace the movements of crypto as its laundered why using Monero, a privacy coin, to cash out stolen funds is a red flag why Tom does not think the two individuals arrested this week for money laundering the stolen Bitfinex funds were the original hackers Become a Premium Bulletin Subscriber!

Flashpoint Editorial Director Mike Mimoso talks to Flashpoint Senior Malware Analyst Ronnie Tokazowski about the first-year anniversary of the AlphaBay takedown. AlphaBay was the largest illicit market operating on the Deep & Dark Web (DDW) and it was shuttered on July 20, 2017 by Dutch law enforcement. Ronnie and Mike discuss the days leading up to the takedown and the impact since on the underground economy.
Rafael Amado and Michael Marriott discuss how the criminal underground has evolved since the demise of AlphaBay and Hansa. No single marketplace has managed to fill the AlphaBay-shaped gap left behind, at least among the English-speaking community. Existing sites such as Dream and Trade Route have failed to consolidate this empty space, hampered by a combination of poor communication by administrators and suspicion that these sites could be police honeypots like Hansa had been. With the rise and fall of dark web black markets like Alphabay and the Silk Road, law enforcement officials have repeatedly warned that even anonymity tools like Tor and cryptocurrencies won't hide criminals from the law's long reach.
While some management teams are afraid of a pentest or risk assessment, other organizations - particularly financial institutions - are well aware of their security risks. They are addressing these risks by simulating fake cyberattacks. By putting IT, managers, board members and executives who would be responsible for responding to a real breach or attack, they are learning how to respond to press, regulators, law enforcement, as well as other scenarios they might not otherwise expect. However, other security experts would argue that cyber war rooms are financially prohibitive for most organizations with a limited budget. What’s more, organizations should keep in mind that not all attacks have to be complicated. If organizations curb phishing attacks or achieve a least privilege model, they would already significantly reduce their risk. It was the week that sent dark web markets scrambling. On Thursday, the feds confirmed earlier reports that they had taken down Alphabay, a dark web bazaar substantially larger than Silk Road ever was. They tacked on a surprising revelation though: Dutch police had a month earlier quietly seized control of the third-largest dark web market, Hansa, setting a trap for displaced Alphabay buyers and sellers. What a world! While darknet drama dominated the headlines, plenty more transpired.

Not since the days of the now-legendary Silk Road has a single site dominated the dark web's black market as completely, and for as long, as the online bazaar known as AlphaBay. And with the news that the site has been torn down by a law enforcement raid---and one of its leaders found dead in a Thai prison---the dark web drug trade has fallen into a temporary state of chaos. About a week ago AlphaBay, the dark web's largest contraband marketplace, went mysteriously offline.
This week we talk about AlphaBay and Hansa dark web markets shut down, pacemaker data admissible in court, and more.
* Singer Chester Bennington, the lead vocalist of the rock band Linkin Park, has died in California of an apparent suicide. He was 41 years old. His death came on what would have been the birthday of singer Chris Cornell, a close friend who committed suicide in May. * Former football star O.J. Simpson has been granted parole after serving 9 years in prison for an armed robbery at a Las Vegas hotel. Simpson, who was famously acquitted in the murders of his ex-wife and her friend, will be released in October. * A 6.7-magnitude earthquake has struck the Mediterranean Sea between Turkey and Greece, triggering a small tsunami that caused flooding in some places. Greek officials report that at least 2 people have been killed and more than 100 are injured. * Two markets on the 'dark web' which were trading in drugs, firearms and malware have been shut down by law enforcement. One of the markets, called AlphaBay, is believed to have been the largest criminal marketplace on the dark web, reaching 40,000 vendors and more than 200,000 users around the world. * A bill in Chile which sought to legalize abortion in cases of rape or health concerns has failed to pass the final hurdle. The Chamber of Deputies was widely expected to approve the bill, but one lawmaker unexpectedly abstained while others were away on vacation, leaving the government one vote short. Opinion polls show that the vast majority of Chileans support easing the abortion ban, which was instituted in 1989. * Prolonged drought in North Korea has severely damaged crops, threatening food security for large parts of its population. The United Nations estimates that early season crops have plunged by more than 30 percent.
