In this episode of the A is for Architecture Podcast, architectural historian at the Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh, Dr Alistair Fair discusses his latest book, Building Modern Scotland: A Social and Architectural History of the New Towns, 1947–1997, which he co-authored with Lynn Abrams, Kat Breen, Miles Glendinning, Diane Watters and Valerie Wright, and published with Bloomsbury in February this year.Scotland's new towns—Glenrothes, Cumbernauld, Livingston, Irvine, and East Kilbride—were bold experiments in urban planning, designed to provide modern, thriving communities in the wake of the Second World War. We discuss the why and how of New Townism, and beyond the concrete and masterplans, reflect on what these places meant and how they shaped the daily life of the people who lived in them. In the end, as always, did they work? And what do they suggest about the contemporary and future of urban growth?Alistair & Co's extensive research and storytelling uncovers the vision, politics, and lived experiences behind these remarkable developments. Have a good listen – Alistair is a wonderful communicator – and find out.Alistair is on Instagram, and above at work. The book is linked above. #ArchitecturePodcast #BuildingModernScotland #newtowns #ScottishNewTowns #UrbanPlanning #ArchitectureHistory #ModernistArchitecture #ScottishHistory #PostWarDesign #AlistairFair+Music credits: Bruno Gillick
On this episode of Chill Filtered, Cole and Bryan crack open a fresh batch from one of their favorite whiskey makers: Found North Batch 011. But before diving into the dram, they take a detour into March Madness, reminisce about sports memories, and somehow find themselves talking about Gwen Stefani. (Because why not?) On Whiskey World News, Bryan reads about Glenrothes' oldest whiskey yet—and why a free hammer comes with your purchase. And on What Whiskey Would You Choose?, Cole poses a fun challenge: If you could only drink 80-proof whiskey, what's your go-to pour? Tune in for another episode filled with laughs, whiskey wisdom, and just the right amount of randomness. Cheers!

Are you scared yet, well you will be. This is the spooky episode of TWSP and we found some new stories and legends. So sit back and relax, on second thought turn the lights on and grab a bottle. And enjoy after you visit our sponsors. Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/aff=3 https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== Patreon.com/the_whiskeyshaman Allow me to regale you instead with the story of the Glenrothes distillery in Scotland. The story actually starts many miles to the south of the town of Rothes, where the distillery is situated, and some years before its construction, by the Firth of Tay at Dundee. An ambitious construction project to build a rail bridge over a nearly 3 mile-long stretch of the fifth began in 1871. Due to challenges and necessary redesigns, there were significant delays, and the construction was only completed in early 1878, after which the first engine successfully crossed the bridge. Queen Victoria herself used the bridge in June of 1879. In the same year in which the bridge was completed, the construction of Glenrothes began, and it was not very long until it was ready for production. On the evening of Sunday, 28 December 1879, the first distillation run occurred. On that very same evening, one of the greatest structural disasters in all of the British Isles occurred when a violent storm blew at the precise angles and strength to cause a collapse, just as a train carrying roughly 70 passengers was passing over it. There were no survivors. Just as the first spirit flowing out of the stills at Glenrothes was being collected, so too did the spirits of those ill-fated travellers depart from this world. Though initially prosperous, the future of Glenrothes would be very turbulent indeed. A fire which raged throughout the distillery 18 years later caused major damage and losses, threatening closure, but they managed to scrape through. Just six years later, in 1903, there was a massive explosion that caused serious damage. In 1922, the second great fire to ravage the distillery burnt down warehouse number 1 and destroyed over 200 000 gallons of maturing whisky. That was not the end of Glenrothes' trial by fire, though, as another significant one occurred in 1962 and prompted the owners to rebuild the damaged structure and also expand the distillery to increase production. The distillery, by the way, is situated right next to a graveyard. One can't help but think of the staff who worked late shifts throughout the years and caught a glimpse of the tombstones illuminated by the cold glow of a winter moon and reminisced about that tragic day, which some thought to be the cause of all the distillery's woes. But like an undying spectre, the spirit of Glenrothes has always endured, and they have made and continue to make some good Speyside whisky, though they are quite often overlooked or maybe just regarded as best forgotten, lest some unfortunate series of events be summoned. Better to just let some things lie undisturbed. Haunted Distilleries: Spirits of a Different Kind October 31, 2023 –––––– Julia Higgins Over the centuries, the distilling business has produced famous figures, legends, outright myths, and even ghosts—more than a few of them, in fact. Reports of spectral sightings and other phantom phenomena have occurred so often that they're almost the rule rather than the exception. Some distilleries have conjured up so much spooky notoriety that paranormal experts have visited, often affirming suspicions that unseen forces are at play. To toast Halloween, we've rounded up a handful of distilleries around the world where spirits—the liquid and the otherworldly kind—are both part of the story.

PRIME is a phenomenon. In the two years since its launch, the hydration and energy drink brand has risen to become a major player in both beverage categories and is generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. What makes it so special? The hosts unpacked PRIME's appeal and remarkable success. They also discussed a head-scratching-yet-spectacular collaboration between Doritos and a Copenhagen-based spirit company, highlighted key details to include in investor pitches and featured a handful of new products, including a delightful Girl Scout cookie-inspired snack. Show notes: 0:35: The New Vitaminwater. “Weird Booze” Tasting. Unsolicited Advice For The GSOA. Hey, Babe. Advent, Evolved. – The hosts pulled back the curtain on why BevNET chose Prime as its 2023 brand of the year and why John sees parallels between it and vitaminwater. They also wondered about the pairing of a sophisticated spirit brand and one often described as “junk food,” praised NOSH's pitch slam finalists and sipped on a secret matcha-infused cream liqueur. The Newton team also snacked on chocolate mint-flavored mini waffle cones, while Jacqui showcased her favorite new advent calendar and set the stage for an on-location Taste Radio recording. Brands in this episode: PRIME, vitaminwater, Bodyarmor, Omsom, Fly By Jing, Empirical, Doritos, Four Loko, Koia, Chubby Snacks, Fishwife, Slim Jim, Tito's, Glenrothes, Tostitos, Lay's, Once Upon A Farm, Annie's, Lentiful, Zwita, Fair & Square, Lexington Bakes, Confusion Snacks, Maazah, Muddy Bites, Babe Kombucha, Evolved, Hoplark
We discuss our exclusive report on Labour's Glenrothes candidate who has been ditched by party bosses over his “sexy” and “satanic” fiction output. Altany Craik is already a long-serving Fife councillor, but it seems he is no longer considered eligible for Westminster. We dig into the bigger picture - including Irvine Welsh's withering reaction. The team also gets to grip with council budgets and the financial trauma coming their way. We hear from UK minister John Glen on new jobs for Aberdeen. And we look at the SNP getting in a twist about Greens standing where Conservatives hope to win.
Matt Fischer served in the Scotland, Edinburgh Mission from July of 2004 through July of 2006. Matt shares how an ankle injury sustained in the MTC had an impact early in his mission, but he found ways to cope with it. He loved the time he spent with other missionaries and her shares fun times fishing the ocean to talk to people in Thurso, having the highest gas bill in the mission in Glenrothes, and many adventures with pint Uno, extreme road trips in a rental car, and popping the clutch on a car to avoid giving it to the zone leaders. Matt currently lives in Richmond, Utah, with his wife and their 2 children. Recorded September 13, 2023

Jenny Gilruth MSP has been the MSP for Mid-Fife and Glenrothes since 2016, serving in the Scottish Government's justice and education committees. Now, she serves as our minister for Culture, Europe and International Development in Holyrood. In 2014, the Better Together campaign infamously told Scotland that the only way to guarantee EU membership was to vote No. Many Scots who voted No cited this reason as the main reason for doing so. But, less than two years after the Independence Referendum, we had a referendum on EU membership. Fast forward a few years after that and we're outside of the EU. So, how exactly is this a big loss to Scotland? Many people will be aware of the single market, freedom of movement of goods and people etc. But what other examples of positive European influence can we point to? And how would rejoining benefit Scotland? Would we even be able to rejoin? Take the ERASMUS scheme, for example. Many think of the opportunities it provided to students, both Scottish and European, but it also enriched many local communities within Scotland due to the associated immigration, argues Jenny. This, in turn, led to a more vibrant society. Sadly, the effects of Brexit mean much of this is being undone. We're now out of the EU and all the major Westminster parties (bar the SNP) have abandoned the campaign to rejoin. This means the only way to get our membership back is to become an independent country. But how likely is it that we'd be accepted back in? Jenny makes the point that many European diplomats have gone on the record and spoken very favourably of Scotland's chances. And we're not the only ones that would benefit from Scotland rejoining. European countries stand to gain a compassionate, outward-looking ally in the event of Scotland becoming a member state in our own right. Listen to all of the above and much more on this week's episode of Scotland's Choice. For more of Jenny's work, click here. Listen to other Scotland's Choice episodes here.
