The Barrington Lake fire — the largest wildfire in recorded history of the province and the Tantallon fire — one of the most expensive. Kara McCurdy recently left her role as a Fire Prevention officer with Natural Resources and Renewables for a similar role with Halifax Fire and Emergency Services. She was also presented with the Lynn Orstad Award for preventing wildfire and advancing community resiliency. As she moves into her new role with HRFE, McCurdy discusses the FireSmart program and some of the lessons learned on protecting properties from wildfire risk. Today we catch up with Regional Fire Chief, Jody Butz about Emergency Preparedness Week. He goes over river breakup, being FireSmart, remembering the 2016 wildfire, and the VPR program.
This week marks Emergency Preparedness Week, where public agencies offer ideas and suggestions to help you build a more prepared life. However, they are unfortunately built on strategies that are decades old and have failed to move the yardsticks on preparedness behaviour adoption. Our societies are wonderful constructions of inter-connected systems that we all take for granted and rarely consider. We no longer shelter, feed or water ourselves - we have handed that responsibility over to the state and corporations, having to acquire those through leveraging our Labour for wages. We wake every morning assuming the water will be potable, the power will turn on and the grocery store will have food. We don't consider when one of those fails, especially not for extended periods of time. Critical Infrastructure should be the foundation of your preparedness plan. so listen in, follow as we being the process of developing that with you. A plan designed by you, for you with likely very little if anything to purchase. Preparedness is free my friends. Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/IMCanoehead)

This week is emergency preparedness week in Canada, the one week a year where the government attempts to focus your attention on their ideals and suggestions about preparedness. This week's episode takes a non-sheep approach to the tag line - be prepared for anything. This is a poor choice of wording and while it may be build on a foundation of encouraging citizens to consider the hazards that are in their area and begin to prepare for those situations, it is more than likely going to turn off more radios than on. To be prepared for anything is to consider everything - that alone is a key message that throughout academic works, books and expert advice is an absolute no-no. Focussing citizens on achievable goals, working towards a more resilient community - those are the outcomes governments should be working towards. It is popular today for the government to be announcing decisions that are grounded in the best science, advocate for by the experts in the field. However, they systematically ignore the very same advice for preparedness, avoiding the evidence and encouraging behaviours that do not improve outcomes. Have a listen, comment and enjoy!

We all grew up with the motto "Be Prepared". It was adapted by the Boy Scouts of America and has since grown to the annual "Emergency Preparedness Week" in many countries. But for us, Masters of Ceremonies, it takes on a myriad meanings and failure to "Be Prepared" can have critical and oftentimes irreparable consequences. I have some hilarious, albeit embarrassing, case studies of my own that we will all learn from. Before we discuss the intricate details of the different types of events, we NEED to make sure you are ready!

Now Available on Google Play Music | Subscribe on iTunes | Subscribe on Android | Like Us on Facebook | Follow Us on Twitter----more----Podcast Topic(s) Emergency situations can come up quickly and with little warning, although some kinds of emergencies can be forecast in advance. Some emergencies require you to shelter in place, while others require you to evacuate from your home and find shelter elsewhere...sometimes for a little while, and sometimes for weeks or even months. How can you prepare your home and your family for emergencies? How do you have the discussion about what to take, in an evacuation situation, and what to leave behind? Scouting is all about being prepared...so let's look at some ways to be prepared for emergencies.
