This meta comedy horror film might have slipped past you, but if you've run through all the others, this one is probably worth a watch. Synopsis In this film, Max, the daughter of a struggling horror film actress, is grieving after her mother's untimely real death three years prior. Her friend's tone deaf step brother played by Thomas Middleditch insists that Max attend his double feature screening of Camp Bloodbath, the film that made her mother a star. While attending with her friends, a disaster happens, and they escape through the movie theater screen. In proper movie logic, they somehow by doing so, step into the reality of Camp Bloodbath (an obvious stand in for Friday the 13th). They soon realize that they are trapped until they can navigate to the end of the film and survive the machete-wielding masked killer. Review of The Final Girls (2015) This is another meta horror comedy that seems to be attempting the success of the previous Cabin in the Woods and Tucker and Dale. In comparison, this one is pretty lackluster. However, it does have it's charm and is an enjoyable watch. The one difference in style is that The Final Girls uses 80s fantasy logic, and doesn't bother with realize. This gives them more wiggle room to have fun with the slasher formula. With Adam Divine and Thomas Middleditch in the cast, I did expect it to be funnier than it was. They only go after the easy jokes around the genre, and don't play as much as they could with the archetypal characters or slasher absurdities. It ends up being surprisingly predictable. Score 6/10

What a true joy it was to talk with someone so talented, inspirational, and spirited about being a filmmaker. The young Emily Hagins started her career around the age of 12 creating the blueprints for what would eventually become her debut feature PATHOGEN. It was a cult hit, and received a lot of attention and acclaim from the Austin film community -- directors and critics supported her as well as her loving parents. She would go on to make a coming-of-age vampire movie, an indie dramedy about one of her close friends, and most recently, a teenage heist movie based on a popular young adult novel. COIN HEIST is her latest, and it features another delightful ensemble. Be sure to add it to your queue on Netflix or better yet, watch it now as well as her earlier work. After hearing our conversation, I'm sure you'll want to support her just as much as I will! 00:00 - 08:27 - Introduction 08:28 - 39:24 - Interview with Emily Hagins 39:25 - 42:50 - Outro Visit Emily's Website: http://www.cheesynuggets.com/index.html More about her latest film COIN HEIST: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5740806/ https://www.netflix.com/title/80097725 Visit The Podcast Network: http://nowplayingnetwork.net Visit The Podcast Website: http://voicesvisions.net

On this episode of PDC LIVE!! we are feeling vastly unaccomplished as we welcome 19 year old director Emily Hagins to talk about her new movie My Sucky Teen Romance. Sure 19 doesn't seem TOO young for a first time director that's why Emily decided to direct her first feature at 12!! After realizing how unambitious OUR teen years were we go to the source of that lack of ambition, VIDEO GAMES!! Or, more specifically video game movies. With the release of Resident Evil: Retribution Travis and I take a look into the future of video game movies....will they continue to be bashed or will they take the place of comic book adapatations?

Last fall, I had the opportunity to interview the writer-director team of Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig for their Fantastic Fest premiere of the vampire film Daybreakers. We talked about casting, creature effects and the cost of contact lenses. You can listen to the interview here, but be warned, a few plot points are touched on, so there may be spoilers. For brevity, I had to cut out part of the conversation, including a Emily Hagins love fest. Apparently the Spierig brothers are well aware of Austin's youngest auteur, and they did spend some time talking with her at the Fantastic Fest closing-night party. Daybreakers opens in Austin theaters on Friday, January 8. Keep an eye out for Debbie's review later today.
