ABOUT THE EPISODE:When Stefan Bate began his third stay at an inpatient treatment center, he was told that he was a "treatment-resistant alcoholic" prone to chronic relapse. Stefan felt deep shame at this realization, but as he would later learn, this is not as uncommon as you might think: Research by Dr. John Kelly at Harvard Medical School finds that, on average, it takes eight years and eight treatment episodes for someone to find sustained remission. But why?Stefan Bate, the Chief Clinical Officer at Jaywalker Lodge, has a few ideas about that. He graduated from Jaywalker's inpatient program himself in 2007 and saw the incredible difference it made not only to his own life but to the lives of countless other men who had previously been resistant to treatment. After the financial crisis of 2008 made his banking career less attractive, Stefan went back to graduate school, earning a Master's in Applied Psychology and his license as an addiction counselor, eventually returning to Jaywalker in a leadership role.In this episode, Stefan and I discuss the concept of "recovery capital," why some individuals do so well in 28-day containment-style treatment but fail in the real world, and how community-based recovery is shifting the landscape of treatment for the better.EPISODE RESOURCES:Hopestream's Recovery Captial downloadable PDFJaywalker Lodge websiteJaywalker Admissions: 1 (866) 445-1269John F. Twenty-year-old Jay Walker has been in and out of hospitals all her life. Despite her health challenges, Jay was a regular person enjoying life. But when she was 15, she almost died due to intense swelling and left the hospital blind. What's it do to your identity to have undiagnosable medical conditions? And what's it like to be Patient Zero of a new presentation of a disease? Lastly, how can a blind person be so incredibly happy and optimistic about her life?! Find out in our interview! Next up we have two listener stories from you, for you. Both follow the theme of unexplainable voices. Our featured story comes from the OTR series X-Minus One. It takes jaywalking to a whole new level. What if space travel had a problem with jaywalkers? And what form would that take? The story first appeared in Galaxy Science Fiction, the December issue, 1950. The tag for this one was, CAUTION HAVE YOU PASSED YOUR PHYSICAL EXAMINATION? Avoiding It May Cost Your Life!
