In Episode 159 of PopCultX, Danny and Gabriel delve deep into vampire culture in pop culture. The episode kicks off with a look at music inspired by vampires, featuring tracks like Annie Lennox's haunting song from the Bram Stoker's Dracula soundtrack and Concrete Blonde's “Bloodletting (The Vampire Song).” They also dive into a detailed appreciation of Bram Stoker's Dracula—the book, the film adaptation, and its far-reaching influence on vampire lore in modern cinema. The conversation then shifts to vampire films, touching on classics like Fright Night and The Lost Boys, as well as exploring hypothetical scenarios inspired by movies like Daybreakers and Interview with the Vampire. Gabriel and Danny debate what would happen if the vampire food supply (human blood) ran out, and whether vampires would resort to farming humans or hunting animals. The duo also highlights the resurgence of vampire themes in comics and literature, with mentions of The Historian and a deeper dive into vampire culture, including real-life vampire subcultures in places like New Orleans. The episode closes with discussions on Halloween plans, horror TV shows like What We Do in the Shadows, and reflections on the Puff Daddy controversy in the entertainment industry, comparing power dynamics to vampires preying on their victims. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcultx/support

An article published back in 1992 would spark a bidding war in Hollywood. Nothing unusual there. That article would lead to Ridley Scott, Jodie Foster and Robert Redford signing up for a big, expensive movie - a movie that never got made. And it never got made because of 1995's Outbreak. Three movies meanwhile had failed to come together in a row for filmmakers the Spierig brothers after they scored a hit with Daybreakers. But they had a project in mind, based on a Robert A Heinlein (Starship Troopers) short story. It'd lead to Predestination - but there was the small matter of starting work without securing the rights to the story... The stories of both are told in this episode... Daybreakers at Oracle Park was an absolutely blast! I didn't record the set live, but here's most of what I played and some of what I didn't from a warm up set I captured before the party. Enjoy! - 8b
In this episode I'm joined by The Demon Disorder director, writer, producer and special effects artist, Steve Boyle. The Demon Disorder follows brothers Jake (played by Dirk Hunter) and Graham (played by Christian Willis). When their youngest brother is believed to be demonically possessed, the estranged brothers reunite to confront a dreadful family secret. Charles Cottier, John Noble and Tobie Webster co-star. In my opinion, The Demon Disorder features some of the best practical effects you'll see in a modern horror film. Working with some of the biggest names in film and television, Steve Boyle has built a reputation for world-class standards in Special FX Production within the industry. With over 30 years experience in Special FX, Steve's credits as a designer include; Fear Below, The Portable Door, Love and Monsters, Daybreakers, BAIT 3D, Mental, Predestination and Jungle to name a few. In this interview, Steve gives us a great insight into the making of The Demon Disorder while sharing stories from his long career in the industry including his friendship and creative partnership with Michael and Peter Spierig, his time working on Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, and his upcoming work on Kiah Roache Turner's highly anticipated shark horror, Beast of War. Anyway… Enjoy.

The gang's all back together this week as guest James Brizuela (Turning Tables Podcast, NPC Gaming Podcast) joins to discuss one of his personal favorites. We're covering Daybreakers from 2009. Somehow yes, 9/11 goes get shoed in and there's very impassioned talk about vampires across all media. We celebrate Alix's birthday mandate with a laid back relaxed episode with a simple plot breakdown, some funny reviews from our friends at Letterboxd, and a vampire tier list -- the results will not surprise you. Thanks for listening!

I don't remember if it was my first visit to the public library, a Carnagie Public Library of course, but it was definitely the first time I strayed away from the children's section and started looking for books to read. The adult side of the library was very different. No cartoon covers in bright colors, just rows and rows of big fat books, they all looked the same. And they all looked like they were more than I could handle. But then I found them. They were in their own section. Rows and rows of small little paperbacks with colorful covers and images of … cowboys. The authors name on the books was Louis L'amour and they were my first foray into adult fiction.I read them all, and loved every minute of it. I still have an old copy of The Daybreakers laying around somewhere in the house.I grew up towards the end of the Western era in Hollywood, Bonanza and Gunsmoke were still on TV, but they would be gone very soon replaced with shows like Kojak and MASH. The westerns of the decade spent more time deconstructing the genre then telling western stories and John Wayne's last film the Shootist hit box offices in 1976.Many of you out there look at the western as an outdated genre, one that has little place in the hustle and bustle of 21st century storytelling. And of course, when it comes to roleplaying nobody is playing a western, right…Right?Well, we are here to point out that you are likely playing a western and don't realize it. Just like with our Sci-Fi episode where we determined that almost everything in roleplaying could be considered Sci-Fi. I would argue that almost every story our table top roleplaying games are telling is a western. The importance of the western can not be understated. The mythic and timeless stories are tied closely into the three pillars of roleplaying; Social, Exploration, and Combat. While I can go on for hours about Westerns, Mike, you never really got into the western. When did you recognize how tied in it was to most rolelplaying games.

The full gang is back! Shadowlink returns to join Scum, Xero, and CoinOps for discussion of the 2009 dystopian vampire movie: Daybreakers. This movie's about a lotta things that bear absolutely no semblance to modern times whatsoever. Come for the plague started by a bat in 2019. Stay for the allusions to genocide. And abject corporate greed. And the problem of dwindling resources. And Willem Dafoe's shotgun crossbow.Hit us up:rss.com/podcasts/l0wl1f3 patreon.com/neondystopia discord.gg/M6fGZERb7Z
In episode 33 we're talking Neil, Dafoe, and Hawke in the action-sci-fi-horror hybrid that is 2009's Daybreakers - a movie that reminded late 00's and 10's audiences that Vampires can still be bloody and fun (and not cut from the Team Edward or Team Jacob cloth). With shades of Gattica and a character-driven genre as the guiding force, we find Daybreakers to be enjoyable. In Segment 1's Comfy Horror Movie Review we talk our favorite Neil, Dafoe, and Hawke career moments and in Segment 2's Horror, Etc Carrie drops her Top 10 90's vampire flicks and Case reads a sliver of the book that inspired Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce: Space Vampires!

You may hear the sound of something being pushed around a bowl in this episode. That may be Elaine's snack. Ten years after a plague turns most of the world's population into vampires, a critical blood shortage causes panic and gruesome mutations among the reanimated. Edward (Ethan Hawke), a vampire hematologist, tries to develop a blood substitute when he meets Lionel (Willem Dafoe) and Audrey (Claudia Karvan), two fugitive humans who claim to have a possible cure. Edward casts his lot with them in the hope of perfecting the cure before it's too late. *The Stand By Me fact was partially incorrect. It takes place in Oregon but not in Astoria. Quince Van Orden and Al Larson do a short dive into Ethan Hawke's catalog of movies to celebrate Ethan himself. On this episode, they discuss the 2009 vampire action flick, Daybreakers. Do you like piss filters on your movies? Daybreakers has it. Do you like unnecessary romance tacked on? Daybreakers has that too. But most of all, it has cool vampire lore in a futuristic society.
Another spooky vampire or otherwise horror movie out and about, and here I and this podcast are to talk all about it! Will you accept this invitation to this episode about the newest thing to sink your teeth into, The Invitation? This episode has everything you could want. Horror things, references to gothic architecture and Hallmark movies, romance, and a debate about the multiple portrayals of vampires and zombies in modern media. But most importantly, this is a piece about a woman grappling with loss and loneliness, dismantling the patriarchy and finding herself along the way. Things we can all relate to, this feminist anthem written and directed by women, it just has a vampire set dressing. So yeah, you should absolutely flock to the theater to see this one and let me know on social at either @NickNack_IC or @NickNackMovis on Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, or Letterboxd if you liked it and if this movie inspired you to tackle down the walls of the patriarchy too?

Editors – Matt Villa and Jonathan Redmond, Sound Designer/Re-recording Mixer/Supervising Sound Editor - Wayne Pashley ELVIS editors Matt Villa and Jonathan "Jono" Redmond are no strangers to director Baz Luhrmann's unique style of cinema. For that matter, neither is Sound Designer and Re-recording mixer, Wayne Pashley. Matt and Jono first worked together on MOULIN ROUGE! (2001) with Jono serving as 1st assistant editor and Matt doing VFX editing. Wayne Pashley goes all the way back with Baz Luhrmann to Baz's first film, STRCITLY BALLROOM (1992). But it was Luhrmann's THE GREAT GATSBY (2013) where Matt, Jono and Wayne first worked together on a film for the acclaimed Aussie director. Delivered in Luhrmann's trademark style of lush soundscapes and rich, high-energy visuals, ELVIS is told through the voice of Elvis Presley's former manager, "Colonel Tom Parker". While on his deathbed in 1997, Parker recalls how he discovered the future King of Rock and Roll and chronicles their time together throughout Elvis' ascension to icon status, as well as the downward spiral that ultimately led to Presley's death in 1977. Watching Wyrd is where four horror, science fiction, and dark fantasy authors, film fans, and good friends get together every week to watch some of their favorite movies, a lot of them the others haven't seen, and analyze them together. Note, if you are looking for unbiased, serious discussions and movie reviews, look somewhere else. That is certainly not what we are offering here. This episode's films: Stake Land (2010) is a 2010 American vampire horror film whose plot revolves around an orphaned young man being taken under the wing of a vampire hunter known only as "Mister", and the battle for survival in their quest for a safe haven. Priest (2011) is an American action horror film that stars Paul Bettany as the title character. It is loosely based on the Korean comic of the same name by Hyung Min-woo. In an alternate universe, humanity and vampires have warred for centuries. After the last Vampire War, a veteran Warrior Priest lives in obscurity until his niece is kidnapped by vampires. 30 Days of Night (2007) is an American horror film based on comic book miniseries of the same name. The film was directed by David Slade and the story focuses on an Alaskan town beset by vampires as it enters into a 30-day-long polar night. Daybreakers (2009) is a science-fiction action horror film that takes place in a futuristic world overrun by vampires and centers around a vampiric corporation that sets out to capture and farm the remaining humans while researching a substitute for human blood.
