This week on TRACK! we are excited to talk to one of the UK's fastest male athletes, Jack Gray. Jack has proven to be a versatile athlete on the road, track and country and has excelled at all distances from the 800m up to making his marathon debut at the COVID secure race in London last year. Jack has represented England on the road, GB on the track and is currently running for the high achieving Cambridge & Coleridge club under the coaching of Mark Vile. Jack has PBs of 13.47 for 5km, 28.57 for 10km, 63.15 for the half-marathon and 2.20 for the marathon. In the pre-show Cat, Robbie, George and Ben discuss the latest race results including those from the European Indoors selection trials in Manchester and the subsequent team selection, some lightning quick 10,000m times at “THE TEN” in California and more races from around the world including some Brits in action at The Texas Qualifier. The team also cover the latest in the shoe debate which continues following some recent comments from Tim Hutchings in regards to Marc Scott as well as the "live-stream" debate following the lack of live coverage for the European Indoor Trials Event. Finally there appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel for the return of non-elite racing and Park runs in the UK. Thanks for listening, we hope you enjoy.

We'll level with you: this might be a middle distance special, but it's the length of a marathon. It's an hour and forty-eight minutes of athletics chat, including four substantial interviews with a quartet of Great Britain's finest current 800 and 1500 metre racers. You could get half way through the responsibly-spaced queue at your local Tesco's in that time.'The optimal length for a podcast episode is between 40 and 50 minutes', the received wisdom will tell you. Well, we've a few responses to that:1) You've nothing better to do right now. You've either cancelled all your plans (like Bayo); you're waiting for this whole thing to blow over in your holiday home (like Jody); or you actually have the virus, and so are a mopey, isolated mess (like Claire). This will help with *any* of those.2) We are enjoying incredible success in middle distance disciplines right now, leaving us all nostalgic for the Cram/Coe/Ovett era, and getting us super excited for what is to come. Six out of twelve available medals won at last year's European Juniors, and three Brits toeing the 1500 metre start line in Doha last year. British trials are now world-class affairs. This is a hot topic. It merits the time.3) The guests we have on are fabulous. Jake Wightman leads the charge, with Scottish records, European and Commonwealth medals, and a 5th-place global finish to his name. Jamie Webb has burst onto the scene, and - with that European Indoors silver and a 1:44.52 personal best - this Chemistry teacher has all the elements to make his mark on the international stage (sorry...). Josh Kerr headed to the States as a 17-year-old, where he won multiple NCAA medals and set the collegiate 1500 metre record, before staying out there to run for Brooks, place 6th in Doha, and start his own podcast ('Sit & Kick': check it out). Oliver Dustin is the reigning European U20 Champion, but - most excitingly - loves tactical racing, and knows he's plenty more to give as he progresses to the senior ranks. You really want to hear what these speedsters have to say.You see our point. So - what are you waiting for? Download, buckle up, and enjoy the longest we've ever gone without interviewing a Sprint Queen...Twitter: @BackstraightB & @Claire_GThomasInstagram: @BackstraightBoysPodcast

World Athletics gave the go ahead this week for Nike's new Vaporfly shoe to be used in competition after suggestions it offered athletes an unfair advantage. There are now strict rules and regulations around footwear in track and field competition to replace a rule that was previously vague and open to interpretation.Russian athletes - even those who competed under the authorised neutral athlete banner - could face a blanket ban after a call from The Athletes Integrity Unit. They are angry that the Russian Athletics Authorities are not working with World Athletics over the latest suspensions and doping allegations. Corona Virus is impacting on the sporting world. The World Indoor Athletics Championships due to be held in China in March has been postponed for twelve months. It's now set to take place just after the 2021 European Indoors. Other sporting events are also now being cancelled or reviewed. In cycling, there's been plenty of medals for Great Britain in the World Para Cycling Championships and World Cyclo-Cross Championships, whilst there's an update on how Team GB could fare in 2020 in the rugby sevens tournament after the recent sevens event in Sydney. Australia has also just hosted the Australian Open tennis and we run down the roll of honour.Plus, hockey, gymnastics, canoeing and this week's news from Birmingham 2022. When Ciara Mageean sat down to record an episode of The Players Chair with Richie Sadlier last year, she was coping with changing coach, living in England, and trying to put disappointment behind her. We're delighted to catch up with her today to talk about her bronze in the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow last night. Tommy Walsh is experiencing a third coming in the Kerry football team - 11 years after bursting onto the scene as a teenager, and 4 years after failing to make any impact on his return from Australia. It's been one of the stories of the NFL this year, and his club manager Mike Quirke is on the line to tell us what's changed. Plus there's Ken's by-now obligatory near-death experience while abroad, we reveal the exclusive audio of the moment Peter O'Mahony asked Joe Schmidt if he and the boys could have a few beers, and the abomination in Ulster schools Gaelic football that had the country talking.

2018 was a doozy. A vintage year. Mondo, Dina, Eliud, Kevin, Laura, Abderrahman, Nafi, Niamh: we could list athletes until 2020 rolls around, but we've just received our accreditation for European Indoors in March, and are rather excited to crack on with covering that for you instead. It was a year in which 6.69 didn't even get you on the women's long jump podium at the British Championships; in which we saw KJT beam - yes, beam! - after a shot put in a major heptathlon; in which you could win double European gold and then be unable to purchase yourself a celebratory beer, because you're an underage, 17-year-old prodigy. How to tackle such a sumptuous 12 months of athletics? With Tom Bosworth, pastries, and mimosas, of course. We sat down with the Commonwealth silver medallist to discuss everything: from the highs of Birmingham and Berlin, to the lows of the Diamond League scheduling and Callum Hawkins' Gold Coast collapse; why Caster is our female athlete of the year; and to whom we would give this year's Wooden Spoon Award. It was lots of fun, and we hope it prompts a fond look back over a seriously good year of track and field your end. Leave us a review, share this episode with all your friends and family, and get in touch: @BackstraightB, @Claire_GThomas, and @TomBosworth.
