We started several months ago when John read his first James Bond novel, "Moonraker." In the Bond mood, the thought was maybe we talk about the 007 movies that are celebrating big anniversaries; there happen to be three of them this year. So, we did that, but maybe adding in the comparisons between those movies and the book upon which they were based was a good idea. Here we are in this process, but "Diamonds are Forever" is not in an anniversary year so, this episode will focus on the novel and less about the comparison. I mean, we should just go through these Ian Fleming classics in order now, right? We hope you enjoy the discussion. What are your favorite James Bond novels? Before all of that we talk about a few shows we've been watching, and John gives his thoughts on Fiendish volume 1 and 2 by Irene Strychalski. @RenieDraws Is it worth the read? BrownTown breaks down the relationship between police abolition and state-sanctioned police accountability measures with newly elected Police District Councilors David Orlikoff and Ashley Vargas. The guests square their PIC abolitionist organizing roots with the new accountability structure, Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA), for the Chicago Police Department. Three years after the first installment in the midst of the 2020 uprisings, BrownTown and the organizers-turned-electeds re-contextualize the path to abolition with the paradoxes, nuances, benefits, and challenges of this new structure on the foreground of the decades-long demand for community control over the police. Originally recorded June 19, 2023. GUESTSDavid is a grassroots organizer from Chicago who moved to the Northwest side 10 years ago. He was the Defund CPD Outreach Lead for the 35th Ward, where they received over 2,500 petition signatures and 71 group endorsements to reduce CPD's budget by 75% and reinvest in solutions that provide the care our communities need. He became very involved in organizing during college with Occupy Chicago, marching against the banks that stole millions of families' homes and then got huge handouts while people suffered.Ashley was born and raised in Logan Square. She is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and the youngest of 5 children. She ran and won as a write-in candidate for the 14th District Police District Council. She began to get involved in her community during high school, organizing for immigrant rights and affordable housing. Now, she has worked in successful grassroots campaigns and plans to continue her work of liberating marginalized people. Follow David on Ashley on Instagram. What happens when one man, a criminal mastermind, who is desperate for immortality and will stop at nothing to achieve it, comes up against his greatest foe - a weary pensioner with a lawnmower fixation? As if out of a Trap, this week actors & comedians Paul Litchfield & Jeremy Limb join Tyler to hem and haw and (occasionally) howl at Peter Sellers' final film, The Fiendish Plot of Dr Fu Manchu from 1980. Released two weeks posthumously, Sellers plays both the title role and that of Nayland Smith, a dogged detective who has foiled many a Fu Manchu scheme over the years and who is called out of retirement for one last job. Assisted by a cast which includes Helen Mirren, David Tomlinson and Sid Caesar, Sellers oftentimes cannot help coming across as tired and jaded and the parallels between his real life health problems and Fu Manchu's desperation to cling onto life are too obvious to go unobserved. Jeremy and Paul have been fascinated by this film for many years and have a lot to say about it - Jeremy in particular delivers an impassioned argument in its defence! 1947 - Pawtucket, Rhode Island. 17-year-old Rita Bouchard was paranoid of being hurt or killed by unknown men. In 1947, an unknown assailant was violently attacking women on the streets of Pawtucket, RI, and Rita, who worked the late shift at the factory, was afraid she could be next. Sadly, on February 1st, 1947, Rita's fear came true. A man walking a trail in the woods discovered her body under a tree. She had been brutally stabbed to death over 30 times with a stiletto knife. Police had no idea who did this to her. A month after her murder, police question a boy named Raymond Patenaude, the brother of Rita's best friend. Again. He was already a potential suspect in their mind, but they didn't have the evidence against him. Raymond told them of a strange dream he had, and came to the realization it wasn't a dream at all, but a repressed memory… A memory of killing Rita. 76 years have passed since Rita's murder, but that doesn't mean it can't still be solved. If you or somebody you know has any information about the unsolved murder of Rita Bouchard, please call the Pawtucket Police Dept at 401-727-9100. A fiendish inner spirit can prompt behavior that defies self-interest and even common sense. In Edgar Allan Poe's story, the protagonist acts on his diabolical urge to commit murder, followed by a self-destructive urge to confess it. Jung says, “If he has done it secretly, without moral consciousness of it, and remains undiscovered, the punishment can nevertheless be visited upon him…” The impulse to take irrational and even immoral risks can cause inner torment and lead to damaging actions. The trickster within tempts us to yield to impulse, succumb to negligence, or be recklessly perverse—simply for the sake of indulging the foolish or forbidden. Posing as merely mischievous, the imp of the perverse proffers a sense of power and grandiosity. He challenges us to meet him with the power of self-reflection, ego strength, and restraint, the components of conscious choice. Here's the dream we analyze: “I am with my wife and child on the North pole. We are in a small cabin. I don't know why we are here or how we got here. It is not a familiar place, but I'm not surprised to be here. There is a blizzard raging outside. Inside it is dark; a fire is burning in a traditional cast iron stove. We huddle together by the fire. I am responsible for the fire. The door blows open, and I can see the white blizzard outside. I fear that my daughter will somehow be sucked into the blizzard. I manage to close the door. I search for firewood, but the cabin is dark and unfamiliar. I venture out into the storm and find some firewood. I return inside to tend to the fire. I find my wife and daughter asleep by the stove.” REFERENCES: Edgar Allan Poe stories online: https://poestories.com/read/imp GIVE US A HAND! On Apr 22, 2020, Historian John Long examined the trial of Charles Watkins for the murder of his wife, which was marked by threats of lynching, a fugitive manhunt, a disappearing witness, mistaken identities, claims of insanity, and a secret letter. A drama played out in the mountains of southwestern Virginia in 1891 that attracted nationwide attention and held the citizens of the Roanoke Valley spellbound. It was a story of violence, bigamy, race and a quest for justice. In its day, the story was as closely followed as a modern televised murder trial. Despite the rapt attention of the public then, it has entirely faded from the history books--until now. John Long resurrects the truth of who killed Susan Watkins. The content and opinions expressed in these presentations are solely those of the speaker and not necessarily of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.
