In January 2025 I sent out an email to all the contacts I still have in sports media and broadcasting. This is something I've done now for the past four years but have had a very limited success. However this year British gymnastics contacted me to see if I would like to be part of the live broadcasting team, covering the British gymnastics championships which would be shown live on the BBC. Alongside Sydney Davis in the studio we covered the British championships all around event and apparatus finals. It was an incredible opportunity for me to share my gymnastics knowledge and watch some of the best gymnasts in Great Britain from the best seats in the house. As a young athlete I was inspired by watching and listening to the great Mitch Fenner commentate on the performances of my childhood heroes. And this is my story.

In March 2025 the 117th British gymnastics championships took place in Liverpool at the M&S Bank arena. We were kindly invited by the British gymnastics media team to attend the Podium training session and had the opportunity to interview some of the top male gymnasts competing. The British all around men's gymnastics title is the most prestigious domestic trophy in Great Britain and the winner is awarded the original trophy from 1896. This championships marks the start of a brand new Olympic cycle as the journey towards the LA 2028 Olympic Games begins. Jamie Lewis recently became the English champion and went into this event as the firm favourite to claim his first senior British title. Luke Whitehouse the double European champion on floor and Paris 2024 Olympic finalist has ambitions to challenge on all six events. First year senior gymnast Jonas Rushworth is an extremely exciting talent, who is hoping to impress with his beautifully technical style of gymnastics. Courtney Tulloch is now a Dad and the changes to the rules in the new code of points, has played a key role in his decision to continue in the sport. Harry Hepworth has big plans to challenge for major championship medals on all three of his favoured apparatus moving forwards following his historic Olympic vault medal in Paris. Jake Jarmin is now a vastly experienced athlete having competed at multiple Olympic Games. His motivations are to challenge for World and Olympic all around honours in the next chapter of his career. And these are their stories.

We spoke about:

What motivates an Olympian when faced with setbacks? In this episode, three-time Olympian and renowned Scottish athlete Eilish McColgan delves into the various aspects of her athletic career. Eilish discusses her upbringing in a family of elite runners, her experiences dealing with challenging injuries, and her approach to training and competing. Eilish shares how her parents—both accomplished athletes—nurtured her love for running without imposing pressure, allowing her to pursue the sport on her own terms. Despite encountering mental and physical hurdles, such as a critical injury prior to the London Marathon, Eilish persevered through a difficult recovery marked by misdiagnoses and setbacks, which strengthened her mental resilience and shaped her approach to overcoming obstacles. Discussing her evolution in training, Eilish highlights the importance of integrating cross-training and recovery strategies into her regimen to manage her workload effectively. The Lever, a key tool in her recovery phases, aids in adjusting training intensity and volume to prevent recurring injuries. Eilish also stresses the significance of maintaining a healthy balance between athletic pursuits and personal well-being, advising against sacrificing life's joys for sporting success. Looking ahead to the upcoming Paris Olympics, Eilish shares her aspirations, detailing her current training focuses and the strategic preparations she and her team are undertaking to ensure peak performance. Her balanced approach to sport and career exemplifies her role as a model of resilience in professional athletics. Quotes “I'm not someone who goes to bed dreaming of becoming an Olympic champion or anything like that. I've never, ever been that type of person. I literally just enjoy trying to run my own PB, whether I come first in a race or last in a race, but I've run a PB, that for me is what is the motivating factor. I like that feeling of pushing yourself and knowing that you've done it.” (02:54 | Eilish McColgan) “As an athlete, I always want to keep pushing, I want to do more.” (09:06 | Eilish McColgan) “Now I have a much better balance with my training of recovery, of having a day off every week, using things like the lever, just small things like that, just reducing my load.” (11:49 | Eilish McColgan) “Cross-training is a huge part of my program. I'd say over the last five years that's been implemented and has just completely changed the way that I train. (12:01 | Eilish McColgan) “The hardest part is getting a qualifying time. There's not a huge amount of 10k races of that high level across the world. To be able to have my time and know that that's banked is definitely a good feeling. Obviously, because I've been injured, I still need to show fitness and form towards my federation, so I have until the end of June to do that. We have our British Championships at the very end of June, so it'll be up to me to try and prove that I'm... I don't need to be breaking records and setting PBs, but I certainly need to show that I am moving towards that Olympic standard again.” (33:19 | Eilish McColgan) Links Connect with Eilish McColgan: https://www.instagram.com/eilishmccolgan/ https://www.instagram.com/levermovement/ https://www.instagram.com/bradmiles/ https://levermovement.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

In 2006 David Eaton won a silver medal on the High Bar at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne for team Wales. He represented Great Britain throughout the 1990's and early 2000's and competed at the gymnastics world championships in 2001 shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks took place in America. Dave's career bridged two generations and he was part of the British team that failed to qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. He went on to be an early component in the beginning of what became the golden generation of men's gymnastics in Great Britain. An opportunity to study and train in California early in his career in part led to the birth of TURN. Which is now the leading men's gymnastics brand globally. Dave was invited to watch the recent British Championships that took place in Liverpool thanks to the All Around British title he won back in 2001. And this is his story.

Quillan Isidore is one of my favorite pros. I've followed him on social media to YouTube for years. So when I started my own podcast he was one person I wanted to interview. Meeting someone you admire doesn't always turn out how you want it. But with him I had a blast getting the chance to know him. In this episode we talked about him getting 3rd in round 10 of the World Cup in Argentina. Both weekends in Argentina according to Isidore were his most consistent. He even says it changed his mentality. Isidore had an up and down season with winning races in Tours, France, a couple Euro cups, a British Championship, and injuries. He has a no give up attitude I admire. We touched on his long time friendship with Tre and Kye Whyte, the changing of the guard from coach Marcus Bloomfield to former pro Kyle Evans, and the young guns Ross Cullen to the ever stylish Paddy Sharrock. At the moment Isidore is back in training for the new season and hopefully a place on the GB Olympic team in Paris.

Hands up if you can barely do a handstand or a forward roll? Just me?!? Well today we are joined by a set of twins who have flipped and flew their way into the Olympic history books and I'm sure they could teach me a thing or two about flexibility: Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova. The twins made Olympic history when at 16, they were part of the Team GB gymnastics team who took Bronze at the Tokyo games. It was the first medal in the event for Team GB in 95 years, and they haven't stopped making history since. Still only 19 years old, Jessica has become World Champion on the floor, claimed an all-round Bronze medal at the World Championships, and has five European Championship titles to her name along with a further three European medals. Jennifer also has a World and European Championship silver, too and multiple British Championship medals. If you haven't seen their jaw dropping routines run to YouTube whilst listening to this episode! Your jaw will be on the floor! It is remarkable that twin sisters can make it all the way to the top of gymnastics together, and today they talk about the secrets of their success, from climbing on furniture as kids, to practicing in their garage to prepare for their first Olympics. I'm sure you are going to feel so inspired by the sheer determination of Jessica and Jennifer, and what I love the most about them is how they can continually show up in the face of failure. As they say, failure is part of their process every day, so hopefully this might encourage you to reframe when things don't go right too! If you are inspired by Jessica and Jennifer please get in touch across socials on @joshsmithhosts and let me know your thoughts, because it's always great chatting to you! AND if you missed it make sure you catch up on the other episodes in our special series celebrating women in sport as we have been joined by World Cup Lioness Lucy Bronze, Lioness legend Jill Scott, the new athletics queen Keely Hodgkinson & more! Love, Josh xx P.S. I am BEYOND proud that this series is empowered by Nike, whose ambition - just like Reign - is to champion women and girls and ensure they feel seen and included in sport and beyond. Nike is committed to celebrating ALL women, supporting HER journey by taking action to make meaningful change and coming through with innovative style-led products you will hear all about in this series. I'm sure you will have already seen the game-changing new England women's football kit - which we talk about in this episode - that includes the new Leak Protection technology embedded in the lining of the Nike Pro Short for athletes. And Nike have also just launched the Phantom Luna - a women-led football boot, backed by Nike's most meaningful investment in women yet that has taken more than two years of research, trialing, designing and styling to develop. We haven't even got onto the bras, leggings, Pro Hijabs and their maternity and plus size ranges so make sure you check out all of the latest innovation for HER product at Nike.com and @nikewomen. After years of trying to get him to do one, Geth Shooter finally caved in and we just recorded a Podcast whilst I'm over in the UK. We cover a lot. Starting out riding for Two Wheel Service Bike Shop, Bunneys GT, Redline, GT, Titan and Free Agent (distributed by Raleigh) later on down the road in the Masters category while working at Raleigh in the mid 2000s. We talk about doubling at both the 84 NBMXA National Series and British Championships in his first full year of racing. Racing with Scott Williams, Martin Jose and Charlie Reynolds that same year. Geth talks turning Pro and maybe missing out on racing in Europe by not racing Superclass first, winning the first round of the Kelloggs against the Americans, his thoughts on Pro racing the first few years, maybe where he might have featured at the Slough 86 Worlds if he had raced. We talk about Geth's domination in the 87, 88 season before moving back down to Superclass mid 88 season and racing the new era of British riders moving into the 90s. We talk about some of the riders he raced with from Ruffell, March, Woods, Robinson, Middleton and later Gary Llewellyn, Craig Scofield era to Tony Fleming, Damon Parkinson, Lee Alexander, Tom Lynch, Neal Wood, Anthony Revell, myself later in the 80s and, finally getting to race in Europe, something you were not allowed to do if you were a UK Pro in the mid 80s. We talk about Geth riding the Ilkeston Brickyard, Nottingham Broadmarsh, Brighouse Trails, Redditch and more, alongside his time working at British Cycling, riding road bikes these days, being inducted into the first ever British BMX Hall of Fame last month and so much more.
