Five years ago this weekend, the Island lost one of its finest Manx men - a respected farmer - a member of the Manx Farmers Union for over 50 years and its longest serving President - a Commissioner, Justice of the Peace, Captain of his Parish for over 20 years - and a very popular presenter here on Manx Radio. You've probably already guessed that description could only be John Kennaugh, who died on 21st September 2015 after a short illness. On this fifth anniversary of John's death, we reflect on another aspect of his life which actually underpinned everything else that he did - and that was his work as a Methodist Local Preacher. John was never happier than when he was at the service of others in some capacity - so it's particularly appropriate that - as we mark this anniversary of his passing - we're At Your Service using John's own thoughts previously aired here on Manx Radio, which so often showed how his love and understanding of the natural world drew him to a closer love and understanding of the nature and purposes of God. John's thoughts are mixed with hymns and music that were amongst his particular favourites - Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine ...... When I survey the wondrous cross ....and the Manx Fisherman's Evening Hymn
A new MP3 sermon from Sovereign Grace Baptist Church of S. V. is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: Studies in Psalms (9) - An Evening Hymn of Praise - Psalm 8 Subtitle: Studies in Psalms Speaker: Dr. William R. Downing Broadcaster: Sovereign Grace Baptist Church of S. V. Event: Sunday Service Date: 8/30/2020 Bible: Psalm 8 Length: 36 min.
Reverend Dr Barbara Glasson, and Professor Clive Marsh are - respectively - President and Vice President of the Methodist Conference - joint leaders of the Methodist Church in England, Wales, Scotland, the Shetlands, the Channel Islands and - yes - the Isle of Man too! They planned to be here on the Island this weekend, but as that's not possible, they've each recorded messages which are at the heart of today's programme. President Barbara believes there's a great richness in sharing our stories, and listening carefully as others share theirs - working at her spinning wheel as she talks! She's also wonders if you are a Tuesday person? Vice President Professor Clive Marsh shares the leadership role with Barbara - this morning he's talking about the Bible, and leave us with a question - given that the Bible is actually a collection of 66 separate books - if they were all about to be swept out to sea, which 4 would you rescue - and why? The horrific death of George Floyd has dominated the news in recent days - Reverend Barbara reads the statement she issued - with the agreement of Clive Marsh - in her capacity as leader of the Methodist Church, in which she apologises for the dreadful realities of racism today, which we must pledge to change. If you want to know more about the actions the Methodist Church in Britain is already taking to abolish all forms of racism, visit their website at methodist.org.uk The Methodist Church are also members of the Joint Public Issues Team, which includes the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the United Reformed Church and the Church of Scotland - working together for peace and justice. You can find them on line too - jointpublicissues.org.uk And we've a great music mix - including two requested hymns - the much-loved Manx Fishermen's Evening Hymn (sung by Musicale and the Regal Singers, accompanied by the Manx Youth Band) and 'Courage, Brother, do not stumble' which was written in 1857 but - over 160 years later - the words are just as appropriate for the challenges of today. The melody was written by Arthur S Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) Clive Marsh enjoys looking for the spiritual element in all music - and his choice is 'I Want to Walk with Jesus' by great blues musician Eric Bibb Your hymn requests are always welcome - email me, please - judithley@manxradio.com - I'll add your choices to my list, and play them in forthcoming programmes. THANK YOU for your interest in this podcast - we'll be AT YOUR SERVICE again next week!

8 February 2020 | St. Josephine Bakhita | Menlo Park, Calif. The whole comedy of Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors” depends on two twin brothers being mistaken for one another’s “alter egos” - each becomes the other’s “other self." But did you know that perfect love of neighbor, that is, true Christian friendship, depends on much the same thing? In this podcast, we talk about the three relationships St. Paul addresses in his household codes - husband/wife, parent/child, master/slave - and how perfect love radically transforms them from within. Also, the life of St. Josephine Bakhita: from abject slavery to radical sanctity. It's a beautiful day. Let's take a walk. This Psalm is apparently intended to accompany the third, and make a pair with it. If the last may be entitled THE MORNING PSALM, this from its matter is equally deserving of the title of THE EVENING HYMN. May the choice words Psalms 4:8 be our sweet song of rest as we retire to our repose!
