rWotD Episode 2807: Fanny Brawne Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Thursday, 9 January 2025 is Fanny Brawne.Frances "Fanny" Brawne Lindon (9 August 1800 – 4 December 1865) is best known as the fiancée and muse to English Romantic poet John Keats. As Fanny Brawne, she met Keats, who was her neighbour in Hampstead, at the beginning of his brief period of intense creative activity in 1818. Although his first written impressions of Brawne were quite critical, his imagination seems to have turned her into the goddess-figure he needed to worship, as expressed in Endymion, and scholars have acknowledged her as his muse. They became secretly engaged in October 1819, but Keats soon discovered that he was suffering from tuberculosis. His condition limited their opportunities to meet, but their correspondence revealed passionate devotion. In September 1820, he left for the warmer climate of Rome, and her mother agreed to their marrying on his projected return, but he died there in February 1821, aged twenty-five.Brawne drew consolation from her continuing friendship with Keats' younger sister, who was also called Fanny. Brawne later married and bore three children, whom she entrusted with the intimate letters Keats had written to her. When these were published in 1878, it was the first time the public had heard of Brawne, and they aroused interest among literary scholars. But they attracted much venom from the press, which declared her to have been unworthy of such a distinguished figure. This may have been exacerbated by the fact that none of Brawne's letters to Keats have survived, also giving rise to her reputation as a cold and unfeeling personage among earlier Keats scholars. By contrast, the later publication of Brawne's letters to Fanny Keats showed her in a more favourable light, greatly improving her reputation. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:35 UTC on Thursday, 9 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Fanny Brawne on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Brian.

From Merchant Ivory's classic adaptations of E. M. Forster novels to the BBC's beloved rendition of Jane Austen's “Pride and Prejudice,” the greatest period dramas are the ones that succeed in translating the emotional experience of another era for a modern audience. On this episode of Critics at Large, the staff writers Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss their personal favorites—namely Greta Gerwig's take on “Little Women” and Jane Campion's “Bright Star,” which chronicles the star-crossed love affair between the poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne—and how the genre is changing. Often, the pleasure of these stories lies in their rigorous depictions of the mores and customs of the past. But recent hit series, including “Dickinson,” “Bridgerton,” and “The Great,” have adopted a marked ahistoricism, evident in the dialogue, soundtracks, and the treatments of race and sexuality. The hosts consider how “The Buccaneers,” on Apple TV+, departs from the Edith Wharton novel on which it's based by skipping over the sociopolitical details that form the backbone of Wharton's story. Do contemporary flourishes accentuate the appeal of the genre, or dilute it? “The strangeness of the past is precisely what makes it amazing when we find out that it is relatable to us,” Cunningham says. “If you make everything relatable, you've eliminated the thrill of discovery.” Read, watch, and listen with the critics: “A Room with a View” (1985) “Bridgerton” (2020-22) “Bright Star” (2009) “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) “Dickinson” (2019-21) “Hamlet” (2000) “Howards End” (film, 1992; miniseries, 2017) “Little Women” (2019) “Mansfield Park,” by Jane Austen (film, 1999) “Marie Antoinette” (2006) “Memoirs of a Geisha,” by Arthur Golden (film, 2005) “Napoleon” (2023) “Pride and Prejudice,” by Jane Austen (miniseries, 1995; film, 2005) “The Buccaneers,” by Edith Wharton (series, 2023) “The Custom of the Country,” by Edith Wharton “The Great” (series, 2020-23) New episodes drop every Thursday. The generally melancholy and sometime elegaic quality of these poems is reflective of Keat's inevitable precooupation with his declining health. Another significant factor was his infatuation with Fanny Brawne, who returned his affection in an unfortunately non-exclusive manner.

My favorite costume dramas of last year are back with sophomore seasons, and they're the slowest of slowburns. Will Charlotte get over the loss of Sidney and finally find someone in Sanditon who appreciates her? Will Anthony Bridgerton marry for love or family? I've thrown in one of my favorite slowburn screen romances, inspired by the love of poet John Keats for artist Fanny Brawne. This is slow but incendiary love — the opposite of instalove, but sexy and romantic all the same.  (CW: film clips contain spoilers!)Many thanks to Kristina, JM and Jack for buying me a coffee and supporting the show. If you like what you hear and want to support the show, send me a little tip here.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comMovies/TV ShowsBridgerton has been a runaway hit on Netflix for good reason: excellent direction, crisp editing, emotional scripts, stunning costumes and sets, exceptional ensemble acting, incredible pop/classical music, and a wonderfully diverse cast. Oh and the wigs! Insane hairdressing. Sanditon is based on the final unfinished Jane Austen novel. It's a fresh, modern adaptation and a costume drama lover's dream. Rose Williams as Charlotte Heyward is the central jewel of the excellent ensemble cast. Her friend Georgiana Lambe, played by Crystal Clarke, really comes into her own during this season. This is a somewhat odd trailer for Bright Star. The overall mood of the film is more elegiac — stark and darkly romantic, which better suits the story. This scene, a bit longer in the film, is one of my favorites and represents the mood of the movie best to me.BooksBridgerton is based on the romance series by Julia Quinn. My college seminar instructor would rap my knuckles because Keats' poem is actually called Ode on a Grecian Urn. Let's commemorate the 200th anniversary of John Keats' untimely death with a conversation with Anahid Nersessian, author of Keats' Odes: A Lover's Discourse (University of Chicago). We get into how she read Keats' letters to Fanny Brawne at WAY too young an age, how she's lived with his poems since childhood and how they've changed for her over the years, and why it kills her that no one has disinterred Fanny's final letters to Keats (which he never read and are buried with him). We talk about her relationship to the western canon, the implicit (and explicit) sexual violence of Ode on a Grecian Urn, her harassment by a Latin teacher in high school and how it affected her career path, Keats' radicalist, proto-Marxist tones and the benefits of reading The Communist Manifesto in funny voices as a 7th grader. We also discuss what it's like to have a couple of strict old-school Freudians for parents, why she doesn't have time for social media (and why she didn't go overboard integrating her personal experiences into the book), the thread of Keats' Odes that has led to her next book on the Cato Street Conspiracy, and more. And so we come to the end of Season 2! And what a season it's been. I would normally have another wonderful guest to come and share their process with us, but this time I wanted to do something a little different. I feel like I had some real personal awakenings that I'm going to share with you. Using excerpts of interviews from across the season, I'll be talking about the value of arts in society and why it's so important to value ourselves! There is a great line in the Jane Campion film Bright Star about the English poet John Keats where his friend, writer Charles Brown says to Keats' love interest Fanny Brawne, something along the lines of, ‘please don't disturb us if you see us lying on the grass staring into space, we're actually working'. That line resonated so much with me because so many of my ideas come from ‘lying on the grass, staring into space!' This episode is about not only giving yourself permission to do just that, it's also about why it's so important to have the space to do so!All over the world, the arts is used to give voice to our cultural, political and social histories, some are celebrated (in the Middle East, for example, poets are considered to be like rock stars, they fill stadiums) some are loathed, some are ignored, some are even killed, many are lauded posthumously. Yet if we understand the importance of art in a society that seeks flourishing over commodity, connection over capital then art and its artists become a bridge. As my guest from last week Shruti Kumar said, artists are ‘orators of our history.'So thank you to all the fabulous guests who have shared their processes with us this season - it has been a real art imitating life, imitating art for me! John Keats In Tennyson's Lady of Shalotte, the metaphor is buried by the story. In La Belle Dame sans Merci, the story is the metaphor. The narrative is as straightforward as a fairy tale, though it also reads like a nightmare.  There are several suggestions as to what the story ‘means': La Belle Dame is tuberculosis, Infatuation, Fanny Brawne, male fear of the feminine. You can take your pick. What Keats thought it meant is a different matter.  The poem first appeared in a long letter he wrote to George and Georgina Keats. At the end of the poem he wrote: Why four kisses-you will say-why four because I wish to restrain the headlong impetuosity of my Muse-she would have fain said ‘score' without hurting the rhyme-but we must temper the Imagination as the Critics say with Judgement. I was obliged to choose an even number that both eyes have fair play: and to speak truly I think two a piece quite sufficient-suppose I had said seven: there would have been three and a half a piece-a very awkward affair, and well got out of on my side-  Which doesn't sound like he was taking it or himself too seriously. The poem is also a candidate for the prize for worst editing of a poem by the person who wrote it. When Keats published the poem in The Indicator, he changed the first line to:  Ah what can ail thee wretched wight… Which is awful.  His defenders claim that by this time his illness was so advanced his judgement was impaired. The poem, even more so than The Lady of Shalotte, appealed to painters in the 19th century.

Legacy: the Artists Behind the Legends

John Keats was an English poet active throughout the early 19th century, and while his life and brief career were cut short when he was just twenty-five years old, Keats is considered one of the greatest Romantic poets of all time. That does not mean, however, that Keats was remotely appreciated while he was alive – instead, he was outcasted by literary critics because of the unconventional tone of his work, and also because he wasn’t born into a well to do family. At a very young age, Keats and his younger siblings were orphaned, and for most of his life poverty was something that plagued John, though fortunately he was so beloved by his friends and colleagues, when things were truly in dire straits he was able to coast along with their generosity. Along with poverty, the curse of Keats’ family seemed to be tuberculosis, which his two brothers, mother, and later he himself died from (though let’s be honest here, TB was a curse to everyone back then). Towards the end of his life, Keats became engaged to a young woman named Fanny Brawne, and that relationship changed Keats in many good and bad ways – while we know how Keats felt about her, Fanny is somewhat of a mystery, and historians and scholars have very mixed emotions about her. And on that note, let’s go ahead and dive right in, shall we?
