In this episode of RAPM Focus, executive editor Steven Cohen, MD, discusses the September 2024 publication of “Current state of the pain medicine match: perspective and an eye to the future,” with Meredith Barad, MD, Anuj Aggarwal, MD, and Lynn Kohan, MD. This letter explores the rationale behind reassessing the NRMP's utility for pain medicine, examining historical and current trends, and considering the implications of withdrawing from the match. Despite a recent decline in applicants and an increase in unfilled positions, the APPD advocates for continued participation in the match. The match ensures equitable and stable recruitment, preventing the chaotic pre-match environment of competitive, early offers. Data from similar specialties highlight the pitfalls of non-match systems, such as increased applicant pressure and reduced program visibility. The APPD supports maintaining the NRMP match while implementing reforms like preference signaling to address evolving challenges. The APPD aims to preserve the match's benefits and ensure a stable future for pain medicine fellowship recruitment. Dr. Barad is a clinical associate professor in anesthesiology (pain) and neurology at Stanford. She is the co-director of the Stanford Facial Pain Program and focuses on headache and facial pain. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from Stanford University Medical School in 2003. After her internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA, she went on to a neurology residency and pain fellowship at Stanford. She is board certified in neurology, headache, and pain. She is the associate division chief of education and program director for the pain fellowship. She is the current president of the American Pain Program Directors. She serves as the chair of the headache and facial pain special interest group for the American Academy of Pain Medicine and is on the editorial board of Pain Medicine. Dr. Aggarwal is a clinical assistant professor of anesthesiology and the associate program director of the pain medicine fellowship at Stanford University, where he specializes in headache and orofacial pain. In addition to his work in pain medicine, he helps lead the teaching of medical students serving as director of pharmacology and as associate director for the Science of Medicine. Dr. Kohan is a professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine at the University of Virginia. She is the division chief and the chronic pain program director. She serves on the board of directors for national pain societies including ASRA Pain Medicine. *The purpose of this podcast is to educate and to inform.

We talk with James Burroughs about his reign as hollywood's greatest sitcom director, being the son of the Abe Burrows In the genetics of comedy, his book “directed by James Burrows”, “Cheers”, “Will & Grace”, “Mary Tyler Moore”, “Taxi”, “Friends”, the scripps that make him want to direct, the ones that don't, his amazing memory, his humble beginnings, the decade it took him to learn how to direct, working with geniuses like James L. Brooks, Chuck Lori, and Kohan & Mutchnick, Andy Kaufman. And Jimmy explains how his two best friends are Al Michaels and Bruce Springsteen.Bio: James Burrows is one of television's most respected and honored creative talents. Over his distinguished career, Burrows has been the recipient of ten Emmys, five Directors Guild of America Awards, the 1996 American Comedy Awards' Creative Achievement Award, and in 2014 the Television Critics Association's Career Achievement Award in 2006 he was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Science's Hall of Fame and was honored by the US Comedy Arts Festival with their Career Tribute award. He has been the recipient of 22 nominations for the Director's Guild of America Award, thus bestowing him the honor of being the most nominated director in the history of television at the Guild. He was recently honored by the DGA with the Inaugural 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award in Television. In November of 2015 he directed his 1000 th episode which was recognized by a TV Special on NBC in January of 2016. Burrows' success as the director of television pilots is legendary. He just finished the first two episodes of Frasier re-boot season 2, and has wrapped up the pilot “Mid Century Modern” for Fox. He will be at the helm of “Mid Century Modern” this Fall as the show goes to series. The current primetime television schedule features one show “Neighborhood,”- whose pilot episode Burrows directed and one streaming show, the “Frasier Re-boot” which will begin airing Season 2 on Paramount + in mid-September 2024. In January of 2020, he received his fifth DGA Award for directing the Emmy award winning show “Live in Front of a Studio Audience #1: Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons.” He was also asked back to direct “Live in Front of a Studio Audience #3: Different Strokes and The Facts of Life” in December of 2021. In June of2022, he embarked into a new market when he published his autobiography, “Directed by James Burrows.” It has received quite a bit of attention and praise from the industry. Burrows is probably best known as co-creator, executive producer and director of the critically acclaimed series, “Cheers.” The hit show, which aired for 11 seasons, is tied for the most nominated Comedy series in the Television Academy's history and is in third place for most Emmys received by a Comedy Series. Burrows has also received numerous awards for his work on “Will & Grace,” “Frasier,” “Friends,” “Wings,” “Night Court,” “Taxi,” and “Dear John.” For the first time in 25 years, he returned to the stage in the spring of 1998 to direct the highly acclaimed “Man Who Came to Dinner” at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, starring John Mahoney. Burrows learned his trade from the very best, the legendary writer/director Abe Burrows, whose noted career included such classics as “Guys and Dolls,” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and “Cactus Flower.” Born in Los Angeles and raised in New York, Burrows graduated from Oberlin College and continued his education at Yale, where he earned a master's degree in fine arts. Burrows relocated to Hollywood to work as a dialogue coach for “O.K. Crackerby!,” a short-lived television series starring Burl Ives. When the show ended, he returned to New York and initially worked as a stage manager before directing several off-Broadway shows, such as “The Castro Complex,” and stock productions of “The Odd Couple” and “Never Too Late.” In 1974, Burrows moved back to the West Coast when he was invited to visit MTM Productions in Los Angeles and offered a job directing an episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Mr. Burrows and his wife, Debbie, reside in Los Angeles and between them they have a quartet of daughters.

Welcome to the Elevate Life Project. In this episode, host Michael Kohan sheds light on the fundamental aspects of motivating oneself to attain remarkable achievements in life. Kohan questions, what does it really take to motivate yourself? He points out a common conflict that many individuals face, the disconnect between planning and action. From setting goals to making plans and being excited, somehow procrastination sneaks in when it comes to actually implementing those plans. Kohan earnestly addresses this issue and presents ways for mastering this ability. Kohan suggests giving attention to things under your control, finding a purpose that inspires you, focusing on small wins, acting first, enhancing your mood, and monitoring your progress. In doing so, he says, you can enhance your motivation and achieve better results in life. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on the things you can manipulate and avoiding wasting resources on anything beyond your influence. Regardless of the task at hand, Kohan underlines the importance of focusing on what your contributions could achieve at the end of the journey. Furthermore, Kohan explores the concept of 'small wins' and the impact they can have on achieving larger goals. He argues that by breaking bigger goals into smaller, digestible pieces, success feels more attainable and exciting. This method subdues the feelings of being overwhelmed and enhances the motivation to pursue the goal head-on. Kohan encourages listeners not to wait for motivation, but rather to act first. He notes that studies have shown a connection between maintaining a positive mood and productivity. To conclude, he emphasizes that progress in a meaningful endeavor is the most potent motivator. EITM interviews Rafi Kohan
Episode 1881: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Rafi Kohan, author of TRASH TALK, about Muhammed Ali, Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Elon Musk and why talking smack is as old as the bibleRafi Kohan is an Atlanta-based writer, editor, and creative leader. He is the author of Trash Talk: The Only Book About Destroying Your Rivals That Isn't Total Garbage, which is available for pre-order now (pub date: December 5th) and examines the art and science of talking shit not just as a quirk of modern gamesmanship, but also as a deeply ingrained human behavioral phenomenon that has erupted across time, culture, and geography. With reporting that ranges from playground basketball courts and cricket grounds to insult-comedy stages, UFC mega fights, wrestling rings, military survival schools, and more, Trash Talk is the first-ever book to explore the topic, a “joyful, adventurous read” (Jeff Pearlman), and “very, very funny” (Anthony Jeselnik). Kohan's first book, The Arena: Inside the Tailgating, Ticket-Scalping, Mascot-Racing, Dubiously Funded, and Possibly Haunted Monuments of American Sport, weaves together on-the-ground reporting, hundreds of original interviews, and deep-dive research into a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary examination of the modern American sports stadium. The book was a finalist for the 2018 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing and was lauded in the New York Times Book Review as “smart, readable, deeply reported and researched, engagingly personal, funny and often surprisingly poignant.” The Wall Street Journal dubbed Kohan “the Studs Terkel of stadium life.” Previously, Kohan served as deputy editor at The New York Observer, where he wrote a variety of long-form feature and cover stories, including a bombshell profile of Carmelo Anthony in October 2013, which broke the news that the star forward was going to test the free agent market. As a journalist, his writing has also appeared in numerous outlets and publications, including GQ (where he worked for five years), Men's Journal, The Wall Street Journal, Town & Country, Slate, Rolling Stone, The Ringer, ESPN, Vice, Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post, among others, covering everything from identity theft to the World Series of Birding to the New Orleans Police Department on Mardi Gras. (That last piece, written for GQ, was named “Notable” in The Best American Travel Writing anthology.) Most recently, Kohan worked at The Atlantic, as the executive editorial director for Re:think, the magazine's award-winning creative studio. He and his team executed ambitious content programs on behalf of dozens of brands, including HBO, Allstate, Lyft, Nest, Netflix, HPE, The North Face, Google, REI, Walmart, and many, many more. Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.

On this podcast, we had the pleasure of deep-diving into a conversation with Hamid, a long-standing pioneer in the crossroads between law and technology. As a leader in the field, he dropped some fascinating tidbits on a burgeoning development in the world of AI — the ChatGPT regulation. This could be a game-changer for transactional law, and Hamid's team at Legal Soft is already gearing up for the seismic shift that's on the horizon. With his 40+ years of wisdom, Hamid had some nuggets of advice for the entrepreneurs out there. For the rookies, it's about rallying a tribe of experts. Entrepreneurship isn't a solo sport, it's a team effort. For the veterans, he advocated for mentorship — the act of giving back to others, an exercise in generosity that pays dividends in its own way. Hamid also offered a glimpse into his life and business philosophy. Despite the fast-paced nature of his career, he expressed the wish that he'd taken more time to ponder, revealing a nuance of patience in the whirlwind world of entrepreneurship. And, with the anticipated release of his second book on AI, it's clear that Hamid is far from done. In a Seth Godin-esque twist, he's turning his personal musings and insights into something tangible, a manifesto for the world to share.
