In order to remember and celebrate God's deliverance of His people, Mordecai calls for the yearly celebration of the feast of Purim. The feast's name is a reminder of the lots that Haman had cast to find the right day to destroy God's people, which God reversed to bring about the day He delivered His people. As the hectic events settle down, King Ahasuerus institutes a new tax as an indication that order is being restored. In that context, Mordecai is promoted to second in command in the Persian empire. This is a reminder that it is the LORD who has been at work all along in the book of Esther to direct the events of history for the good of His people.  Rev. Andy Jagow, pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Alexandria, VA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Esther 9:20-10:3.  "For Such a Time As This” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Esther. Although God is never explicitly named in the book of Esther, He remains the One who directs all the events of the book. Happenings that seem coincidence, chance, or luck are truly God at work. He puts Mordecai and Esther in the right places and moments to work through them to deliver His people.

The story of Purim is for anyone who may have thought that God has forgotten them. For anyone who may have concluded that they are fighting the fight all by themselves; here and more than in any other places in the Scriptures, God is never gone, He is so involved in the affairs of His people. The Book of Esther stands also as a prophecy which speaks of God's love for Israel and for all, for all who made Yeshua Lord in their lives. Esther is then for you to know that He loves and protects you all the time, even though we may not always see Him. Many Christians may know about the Feast of Purim and the story in the book of Esther on the origin of this feast, but Christians rarely celebrate Purim or spend much time with the book of Esther. That is a shame because the story of Purim is one of the most meaningful teachings from the Scriptures about spiritual warfare, and it has great significance for us.   Show Notes: We read in the book of Esther that Haman manipulated the king to issue a decree of death against the Jews. And as humans we have labored under the decree of death that was first placed on Adam and Eve because of sin. This may have been manipulated by satan, but it was the King's decree. It was God's declaration of judgment against them.   Esther appeared before the king to plead for the lives of her people. By extending his scepter to her, the king received her into his presence, and he responded by sentencing Haman to death. Likewise, Yeshua (Jesus) was accepted into the presence of God and His plea for our lives was granted, resulting in the judgment of satan.   The important lesson from the book of Esther is that, even though Haman was killed, the destruction against the Jews was still in motion because it was the king's decree and could not be reversed. Therefore, the king gave Esther and Mordecai his signet ring and told them to destroy those who would destroy them. As Christians, we must recognize that the futility begun by the King's decree is set to destroy us, and we must use the signet ring, the mighty name of Yeshua HaMashiach, Jesus the Christ, to execute the judgments written and end that which is destroying the world.   Key Verses:   •       Book of Esther. “Summarized throughout the podcast.” •       Esther 3:13–15. “Letters were sent … to kill and to annihilate all the Jews.” •       Esther 4:11–17. “I will go in to the king, … and if I perish, I perish.” •       Esther 7:1–10. “They hanged Haman on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai.” •       Genesis 3:13–23. “The Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden.” •       John 3:16. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son.” •       Matthew 3:13–17. “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” •       Matthew 24:22. “No life would have been saved.” •       Hebrews 7:25. “He always lives to make intercession for them.” •       Ephesians 4:8. “He led captive a host of captives.” •       Revelation 12:7–9. “Satan … was thrown down to the earth.” •       Esther 8:3–12. “A decree … sealed with the king's signet ring may not be revoked.” •       Romans 8:20–24. “Subjected to futility, … in hope that the creation itself also will be set free.” •       Philippians 2:9–11. “At the name of Jesus every knee will bow.” •       Luke 10:17–19. “I have given you authority … over all the power of the enemy.” •       Romans 16:20. “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” •       Psalm 149:8–9. “To execute on them the judgment written.”   Quotes:   •       “I hope you see the significance of this victory that is Purim. The reason we have a Savior today is because of this tremendous victory that took place under Esther and Mordecai against the decree of annihilation that was brought about by Haman.” •       “All of this has so much to do with us because we know that our hope is in the King. Our hope is in the Lord of Lords. Our hope is in the Creator of the universe who rules in heaven. And before Him we have to make our cry.” •       “I encourage you to study and get involved with Purim. Have a celebration with your family, with your community, with whomever you're with in faith. Find yourselves celebrating this tremendous feast of Purim, this time of deliverance from annihilation.”   Takeaways:   1.    Through the pleading of Christ before the King in His throne room, we see that satan is brought into judgment. Plans that he had for the destruction of mankind are brought back upon his own head. 2.    Christ's coming dealt with the perpetrator of the decree of annihilation against humanity, but that decree has left behind a minefield of destruction that we must deal with. 3.    Yeshua ascended to the right hand of the Father, and He has given us the authority and ability to go in His name to proclaim the ending of satan's plan. We are the ones who will crush satan under our feet. 4.    It is only through the voicing of the name of Christ that we will see these death sentences removed until all humanity rises up with the cry in their hearts to receive God and His work and what He has done for them in salvation.

Jewish people all over the world will have a joyous celebration for the Feast of Purim, March 6-7 this year.  While the joy of the holiday, based on the Book of Esther, focuses on God's rescue of His people from annihilation, there is also a stark reminder of Satan's desire to wipe out the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Esther 9:20-32 ESV 20 And Mordecai recorded these things and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 obliging them to keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same, year by year, 22 as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor. 23 So the Jews accepted what they had started to do, and what Mordecai had written to them. 24 For Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur (that is, cast lots), to crush and to destroy them. 25 But when it came before the king, he gave orders in writing that his evil plan that he had devised against the Jews should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. 26 Therefore they called these days Purim, after the term Pur. Therefore, because of all that was written in this letter, and of what they had faced in this matter, and of what had happened to them, 27 the Jews firmly obligated themselves and their offspring and all who joined them, that without fail they would keep these two days according to what was written and at the time appointed every year, 28 that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, in every clan, province, and city, and that these days of Purim should never fall into disuse among the Jews, nor should the commemoration of these days cease among their descendants. 29 Then Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew gave full written authority, confirming this second letter about Purim. 30 Letters were sent to all the Jews, to the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, in words of peace and truth, 31 that these days of Purim should be observed at their appointed seasons, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther obligated them, and as they had obligated themselves and their offspring, with regard to their fasts and their lamenting. 32 The command of Esther confirmed these practices of Purim, and it was recorded in writing. THE FEAST OF PURIM Purim being the Hebrew word for “lots.” This Feast of Purim is a Jewish holiday in celebration of the deliverance of the Jews. The wicked Agagite, Haman had convinced the king that all Jews were rebellious so that they must be annihilated. To set the date of their execution, Haman used lots, or purim. Unbeknownst to Haman, Queen Esther, was a Jew and Mordecai's niece. When the king knew that Haman was behind the plot, he executed Haman on the gallows he prepared for Mordecai. Esther appealed to Ahasuerus for her people's lives. But, the king can not revoke the decree to attack the Jews. Instead, he did issue a new decree allowing the Jews to defend themselves during that day, the 13th day of the 12th month Adar. Resultingly, Haman's family were executed, and all their enemies. This favor from God is too significant to forget. That Haman's evil plan that he had devised against the Jews should return on his own head is no short of a miracle. Even his wife and sons should be hanged also on the gallows. Thus, Mordecai instituted the Feast of Purim to be celebrated every year. Indeed, only God can turn our mess into a message, our test into a testimony, our trial into a triumph, our humiliation into honor and as a victim into a victor. Thus, let's put our faith upon God. Otherwise, we faint. As the psalmist David expressed, “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”[Psa 27:13 KJV]

Esther is simultaneously a victory and a tragedy. In some ways, If you look at it through a modern lens, it should be called the Victory of Mordecai and the Tragedy of Esther. Esther loses her parents and then is taken into the harem of a despotic king to be used as he wishes. Mordecai ends up, like Daniel, a very high official and ruler in his expatriated land. This will be a great study of Esther as we look at the emotions, the world and the meanings of one of the most cherished, and often misunderstood books of the Bible.-----------LINKS----------Support 10WB on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/10weekbibleThe 10 Week Bible - http://www.10WeekBible.comTwitter: @DarrenHibbs - https://twitter.com/DarrenHibbsSign up for my newsletter - http://www.darrenhibbs.comGet a copy of the 10 Week Bible Study today - https://www.amazon.com/Darren-Hibbs/e/B00B4I47CE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl2&tag=darrenhcom0a-20&linkId=401f3d79974c70929517936977e32df9My other YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChUU0XHSHuhSyN8qk-7efYgSign up for or email list at 10WeekBible.comSupport the show
