What would it be like to successfully slow down this Advent season, and be able to truly focus on celebrating the birth of Jesus? One of the schemes of the devil in our culture is busyness, and it is a wildly successful one. At Cornerstone, we are aiming to slow down, and approach this Advent season a little differently than the usual way. We are going to discover several obscure passages where the bible foretold the birth of the Savior of the world. We invite you to join us this Advent season as we will be Finding Christmas in Unexpected Places.
Throughout 2023, we are reading and studying passages of scripture as a church family that speak about the topic of Growing in Christ. We continue this year-long series with Senior Pastor Dr. Tyler Smiley speaking from Luke chapter 2 about the role of love in the story of Christmas
On an obscure country road a few miles west of Karnes City, the occasional traveler is in for a delightful surprise. Kirby and Judy Hons have built their own version of a Hallmark Christmas on almost two acres in the front yard of their country home on F.M. 1144. Unlike the Hallmark version that is all about magic and merriment, the Hons's Christmas is filled with faith and family. For instance, the life-size gingerbread house features a collection of “gingerbread men,” each one named for a family member. “We keep adding to it,” said Judy, as new grandkids are welcomed...Article Link
We elevate the journey with catchy lines and good intentions, but the strategy isn't foolproof. The journey can be as painful, challenging, and lonely as the destination. It's uncertain. Our experiences and what we anticipate about our destination make up the journey. But our best efforts can't compare with the wonder-working power of journeying with Jesus.
Throughout 2023, we are reading and studying passages of scripture as a church family that speak about the topic of Growing in Christ. We continue this year-long series with Senior Pastor Dr. Tyler Smiley speaking from Luke chapter 2 about the role of joy in the story of Christmas.

Sung of as a “silent night,” we romanticize the Christmas story; a glorious star cuts through the darkness as the world's Savior is born. The reality of this beautiful story is riddled with trials, much like our own. A closer look reveals deeper beauty and meaning in the mess. It proves our need for a savior and promises hope.

On today's show, we're looking to figure out what the Yankees and Orioles can do to fill out their roster in 2023, now that the Top 25 free agents have all signed. Baltimore would be foolish to count on John Means this year, so even with Grayson Rodriguez coming up we need to find them some more help. The Yankees have spent a lot of money, but other than Carlos Rodon they haven't really added a ton of outfield talent and still have a hole in LF. Finally, we look at popular trade targets to discuss whether they're slam dunks to get moved, possible to get moved, or longshots. History tended to get buried quickly in Southern Indiana, but we always had faith in folks helping us find things we may have lost, including Christmas. In this episode we share some old news items about things or pigs folks lost at Christmas time as well as buried skating rinks, Mastadons, entire towns, and way stations along the Underground Railroad. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/danny-howell/message

Krista shares the story of her grandfather spending his first Christmas away from his wife as a soldier in Korea where he spent a humble and joyful Christmas in an orphanage as he shared a simple gift. She also shares how she has found joy during the holidays even after her daughter has passed away.Episode Discussion PointsHoliday tradition—pick any box of sugared cereal for Christmas Morning breakfastKrista tells the story of her grandfather leaving his brand new bride to go serve in the Korean War.Her grandpa said it was hard to see the little children who were orphaned due to the war.Someone in the village set up a little makeshift orphanage in a bombed out villageHe and a buddy would take anything they could and visit the children in the orphanage.Taking the hard tack candy from his care package and giving it to the children in the orphanage—and their joy since this was their only Christmas present. The children then danced for them in their bare feet and ragged clothes to say thank you.Lessons LearnedBe thankful for the blessings we have and never take them for granted because things can so easily be taken away.Even in the hardest, darkest days there can still be things that bring us hopeAllow others to come into your darkness and bless your lifeIf you are away from family during the holidays, look for someone to serveTrue joy doesn't come from decorations, family or lights—it comes from serving and giving what you can.To People Grieving Loved Ones During the HolidaysIf you feel stuck—it is okayBe patient with yourself and allow time and grace as you go through all the emotionsDon't pretend grief doesn't existTry not to be stuck forever. Allow yourself moments and times to grieve, and then say, “I don't want to be stuck here.”Remember the joyful times—Krista wants her angel daughter to know (in heaven) that her death didn't only bring sadness to her life, that she also remembers the joyful times as well. Each Christmas Krista and her husband write their angel daughter a letter and stick it in her stocking. In this letter they make a promise to her of something they will do that coming year to better themselves, serve others or add goodness. Because these are the things that will help them become more like her and be prepared to be where she is in heaven.Favorite Bible Verse about Jesus ChristIsaiah 12:2, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.”It is a process to truly learn to trust God and have Him become our salvation.Connect with KristaListen to her podcast where she shares the story of losing her young daughter to a brain tumor here: Krista Isaacson: Courageously Trusting God With Heavy BurdensBuy her book Unbearable Burden on Amazon. Hundreds of years before the Messiah arrived in Bethlehem, Isaiah prophesied about him many times. And when modern readers turn to this Old Testament prophet, passages related to Christmas can't help but leap from the page. Prophesies about a great light, a child born, someone named Immanuel, a suffering servant, the lamb of God, and, of course, the prince of peace. To help unpack this book of Christmas prophecies, Charles Morris speaks to Ray Ortlund Jr., Old Testament scholar and son of Haven's third Speaker. If you are a longtime listener to Haven, his voice will be immediately recognizable. A pastor to pastors, Ray is the perfect person to help you reflect on the powerful themes of Christmas and the cross in the book of Isaiah.
Christmas at EB 2021 This month we start a new series looking for the true meaning of Christmas.
This week Dr. Ike Reighard challenges us to look past the ordinary, and find Christmas in extraordinary things - like Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Jesus said that all of Scripture points to Him. One of the best places to verify this is in the writings of the Old Testament prophets. In fact, though the book of Zechariah is often neglected by casual readers, it is quoted no fewer than 67 times in the New Testament. On today's episode of the Great Stories Podcast, Dr. Iain Duguid, currently professor of Old Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary, sheds some light on this minor prophet. Here he discusses what the book of Zechariah has to teach us about living out our faith in a difficult world, while also examining some of the book's most prominent prophecies about the Christ of Christmas.
Our Christmas series kicks off with Dr. Ike Reighard reminding us to focus on Christ's presence rather than presents this Christmas.
