Jesus in Luke 5 shows how grace lands. Jesus steps into Peter's boat and turns his work into a platform. The gifts look like bread at the feeding of the five thousand, same substance, different shapes and sizes, and Jesus uses each in the shape it comes. When a man gives Jesus his boat, Jesus gives back a command, Launch out into the deep. That call requires forgetting last night's failure, washing the nets, and rowing anyway. God is not in the shallow end. He meets a man in the deep and turns a gift into a culture that stretches from children to children's children. The Spirit guides. Grace supplies. The Father delights. And fatherhood becomes a steady climate where sons and daughters breathe I love you, I'm proud of you, and Here is what you are good at.

Hopestream for parenting kids through drug use and addiction
When my son Enzo was using fentanyl and Xanax and blowing up every structure I tried to build around him, I kept asking the wrong question. What I wasn't asking was what was happening inside him that he couldn't put words to. He was a teenager with an unmedicated ADHD brain, getting more reinforcement and belonging from the drug world than anywhere else in his life, and he had no way to tell me that.Enzo is back on the podcast today with something specific: the things kids who are actively struggling can't necessarily say but really wish their parents understood. When I asked what he would have wanted me to know back then, Enzo told me about a kid he recently mentored who, when asked the same question, said the only thing he wanted his parents to know was, “I'm trying.” And Enzo realized that was exactly it. Not that the drugs were working. Not that his choices were okay. Just that from inside his brain, he was doing something that felt like trying.Enzo is now the founder of Life Strategies Mentors, a mentoring program for young men navigating recovery and reintegration. He's in his late-twenties, expanding his team, building a life that not long ago did not seem survivable. This conversation covers a lot of ground, from the fish love parable that reframed how I think about parental expectations, to what ADHD does to the brain's relationship with substances, to why kids sometimes listen to a near-stranger before they will listen to their own parents. That last one is not a failure of the relationship. It is biology. Knowing that changes something. If you have been watching your kid and thinking they are not even trying, this one is for you.YOU'LL LEARN:The fish love parable, and the question it forces you to ask about your own parentingWhy “I'm trying” is the one thing a struggling kid most wishes their parents could hearWhat ADHD actually does to the brain's relationship with substances, and why warnings don't landThe biology behind why kids listen to mentors before they listen to parentsThe one skill Enzo says made the biggest difference when he was finally ready to changeEPISODE RESOURCES:Life Strategies Mentors websiteFish Love story on YouTubeEnzo on Hopestream podcast episodes #251 and #185ADHD Resources:Dr. Gabor Mate's book, “Scattered Minds”Dr. Russell Barkley on YouTubeDr. Ned Hallowell on Hopestream episode 99 (ADHD as a Superpower)This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Join Reverend Willis Greene as we delve into her sermon "Jonah: More Than a Fish Story."
Share a commentJonah gets filed away as a children's story so easily that we forget how sharp it really is. We dig into the opening of Jonah and notice what the text does not bother to tell us: no origin story, no warm introduction, no details about how the message arrived. The book moves in fast motion, and that pace forces a question most of us would rather avoid. What happens when God's word interrupts your plans and refuses to slow down for your comfort? We zoom out to show why Jonah is far more than “Jonah and the whale.” Inside fewer than 50 verses you find a storm, pagan sailors turning to God, a miraculous rescue, worship from the depths, and the repentance of a brutal nation. Jonah also becomes a surprising window into biblical theology: God's mercy reaching Gentiles, God's sovereignty over creation, and a prophetic signpost that ultimately connects to the resurrection of Jesus. Then we take on the criticism head-on, walking through five common objections people raise against Jonah's authenticity, from miracles to Nineveh's size to vocabulary debates. We ground Jonah in history through 2 Kings, highlight why the book begins with “And,” and unpack the meaning behind Jonah's name as a “dove” sent with truth that leads to peace. We close with three practical takeaways for everyday faith: be alert, be encouraged, and be careful, because past obedience does not guarantee future obedience. Subscribe for more, share this with a friend who thinks Jonah is just a fish story, and leave a review with your biggest question after listening. God sent the prophet Jonah to deliver a stern message to the rebellious people of Nineveh. Dr. Ron Jones shares their response to that message next, on this Thursday edition of Something Good. Today, we return to the book of Jonah and to his warning to Nineveh about the impending consequences of their sin. It's a story of obedience, of repentance, and the God of second chances.
It's the greatest fish story ever told, and it comes your way next, on this Wednesday edition of Something Good. Today, we come to the story of Jonah, a runaway prophet who spent three days living in the belly of a great fish. This three-day period foreshadows Christ Himself and offers practical lessons for us today.

We've all run from something, a hard conversation, a tough decision, a call from God we didn't want to answer. Jonah did, too. Most people know him as “the guy who got swallowed by a fish,” but his story is really about what happens when we run… and what grace looks like when we stop. In this series, we're looking at Jonah's journey, not just the part with the fish, but the real-life stuff: the choices that backfired, the storms that followed, and the unexpected shot at a second chance. This isn't just an old Bible story, it's a reflection of the world we live in. If you've ever felt lost, overwhelmed, or like you've been running from something for way too long… Jonah's story might just be your story, too.
