Liam and Cal are back at it again with their first review of 2025 and a return to Justice League Unlimited for the month of January. This week they continue on in Season Three of JLU with the episode "To Another Shore." On this episode, the hosts discuss the unique "embargo" that helped shape this episode into one that would alter the course of the remainder of the series, why character embargos are so confusing and what influenced the various limitations on JLU over the three seasons. The hosts also discuss an episode with a plot right out of Super Friends, the unique illustrations and whose art directly influenced the work by Bruce Timm, a meta musical moment for the first time in the DCAU and a rather distracting casting choice for one of the episode's minor characters. Long before the Avengers released in theaters and Zack Snyder produced something several notches lower than absolute cinema (twice!), the DC-flavored Earth's mightiest heroes made their animated debut in Bruce Timm's Justice League, allowing kids across the world to learn about Superman and Batman's friends like Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter! And also Hawkgirl is there. This show is close to many of our childhoods, and we appreciate that this show still holds a lot of that Saturday morning cartoon magic while still providing some killer arcs that are so integral to DC Universe media today. Clancy Brown's Lex Luthor and Mark Hamill's Joker add that villainous flair to an already excellent TV show, and we can't wait to tackle Justice League Unlimited very soon here on the Couch. Content warning: strong language.

Alexis Hejna and Jesse Starcher present their Batman Caped Crusader 2024 TV Show Review! Batman: Caped Crusader is an American animated television series based on the DC Comics character Batman. The series is developed by Bruce Timm, and produced by Bad Robot Productions, 6th & Idaho Motion Picture Company, Warner Bros. Animation, and DC Studios. Premiered on August 1, 2024, on Amazon Prime Video, the show offers a noir-inspired reimagining of the Batman mythos, focusing on a young Bruce Wayne during the early stages of his crime-fighting career in Gotham City, drawing inspiration from Batman stories of the 1940s and 1960s.Starring Hamish Linklater as the voice of the titular character, the series explores themes of corruption and crime in a stylized, period setting. The project was first announced in May 2021 and has been noted for its serialized storytelling and deep psychological exploration of its characters. Critics have praised its mature tone and complex portrayal of the superhero, setting it apart from previous adaptations.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

To mark the monumental occasion of our (can you believe it???) 100th episode, we turn the Bat-Signal toward one of the most iconic figures in all of pop culture—Batman. In true caped crusader fashion, we're combining the best of what our podcast has offered with a one-time-only double feature commentary of two films that capture the darkness, complexity, and heroic resolve of Gotham's protector: Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and the animated classic Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993). These films hold a special place in our hearts, making this deep dive into the world of the Dark Knight a personal indulgence as we celebrate this milestone. But this episode also marks a turning point for us. While it's not goodbye, it's more like an ellipsis—a break before we return with something new and exciting. Stick around until the end for a very important announcement about an entirely new podcast project on the horizon. We can't wait to see you there! A little over 30 years after it premiered, Batman: The Animated Series is back! (Kind of.) Caped Crusader takes the form of a spiritual sequel to WB's hit '90s series, though one closer to Bruce Timm's original pitch. This time around, the cartoonish qualities are replaced with pure noir, making this a more subtle, moody, and adult series. On this episode of What A Cartoon, join us as we explore this newest iteration of Batman and see if it can possibly escape the shadow cast by what came before. Amazon has dumped 10 episodes of the new Bruce Timm Batman cartoon all at once, but we're going to be taking these two by two over the next few weeks. Let's be upfront: your hosts were not very psyched about this show in advance and then we watched it and are forced to eat our words. Not unlike how RFK Jr was trying to eat some bear. We don't mean to get political, but the news right before we recorded was so wild we had to talk about it. If you'd rather get straight to Gotham City, skip to 45:57. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. We were all expecting some exciting news and confirmations coming out of Marvel Studios' San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation, but nothing could have prepared us for the biggest and most shocking reveals; so, let's break down the tastiest Marvel morsels making waves: Jumping straight into the big Avengers News The Russos Bros were officially announced as the directors of both upcoming Avengers films. MCU veteran Stephen McFeely also was revealed to be writing the screenplays for both. The untitled fifth Avengers film that was once The Kang Dynasty, is now Avengers: Doomsday and is eyeing May 2026 for its release. The title and release of Avengers: Secret Wars was confirmed for May 2027. Robert Downey, Jr. will return to the MCU to play Dr. Doom. Captain America: Brave New World kicked off the proceedings where we learned: Harrison Ford's Thunderbolt Ross is, in fact, our Red Hulk Tiamut is the source of Adamantium in the MCU Giancarlo Esposito's mystery character is Sidewinder, a leader of the Serpent Society After a Thunderbolts* cast appearance, the focus switched to the Fantastic Four film, which was revealed to include the subtitle: First Steps; with the titular cast taking the stage even as filming just began in London. Regarding would-be Marvel saviors, Deadpool & Wolverine, this year's sole theatrical outing for Marvel Studios, was an absolute monster at the box office, hauling in more than $211 million domestically in its opening weekend. That was enough to make it the sixth highest opening of all time in the States, as well as the highest opening for an R-rated film ever; And it was no slouch worldwide either, with an impressive $444.3 million 3-day opening globally. While the Distinguished Competition did not have nearly as visible a presence at Comic-Con this year, the week was still full of noteworthy updates from DC Studios. First, figurehead James Gunn unveiled a new logo for the studio with a simple, clean design that, much like his version of Superman appears to, harkens back to the Golden Age of comics. Additionally, we got our first look at the DCU's debut project, Creature Commandos, via a trailer that showcased the show's animation and each team member in action. Lastly, it's a double dose of Penguin news, as the third trailer for the upcoming Colin Farrell-led HBO original series hit the internet alongside the news that Matt Reeve's and Bruce Timm's Batman: Caped Crusader series at Amazon will feature a female Penguin. We'd be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the reason Comic-Con exists in the first place… The Comics! Thankfully, our resident aficionado is here to give us a snapshot of the latest and greatest happenings from the panels and pages of our favorite fictional universes. Take it away, Hayley: SAG-AFTRA is striking against major video game companies after nearly two years of unsuccessful negotiations for its Interactive Media Agreement. The strike began on July 26 at 12:01 a.m. Last week on July 25, Kevin Feige received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Several actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe were in attendance for the ceremony. Dune and Mission: Impossible star Rebecca Ferguson has joined the cast of Netflix's upcoming Peaky Blinders movie and will star alongside Cillian Murphy. The long-rumored Spawn movie may finally emerge from development hell. With a script titled King Spawn now completed, creator Todd McFarlane and Blumhouse's Jason Blum are set to meet with directors. At San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount unveiled the title sequence for the upcoming animated series Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Set in the universe of 2023's Mutant Mayhem, it will bridge that film and its sequel. The series streams on Paramount+ starting August 9.
The iconic Batman: The Animated Series is considered the gold standard in superhero storytelling. Many consider that iteration of The Dark Knight to be the best version among comics and movies. Kevin Altieri was a storyboard artist and director on numerous episodes of the classic show. Altieri also worked on the classic Batman: Mask of the Phantasm animated movie. His career also includes The Spectacular Spider-Man, Transformers: Rescue Bots, Stripperella, GI Joe: Renegades, and more. In this episode, Altieri takes a deep dive into what made the animated series so incredible, and how it has stood the test of time. He also handpicks some favorite episodes and detailed his favorite moments from Phantasm. This episode was recorded at the Garden State Comics Fest in Morristown, New Jersey. The episode also features audio from the recently released trailer for a new Bruce Timm-centric animated Batman show, Batman: Caped Crusader.
