Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! On this episode we had the pleasure of having a conversation with local captain Matt Perachio of Tighten Up Charters, Cape Cod. We have known Matt for several years, and fish a lot of the same grounds throughout Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bay. Matt's offshore fishing career began during his childhood summers on Cape Cod with his family. Over the years his affinity for the ocean left him wanting more and eventually he transitioned from  recreational and commercial striped bass fishing, to the adrenaline packed pursuit of light tackle bluefin tuna and taking out clients for hire. Today, Matt is a full time charter fisherman and guide. He runs over 150 trips a season, with most of his trips being light tackle bluefin tuna trips; specifically targeting bluefin using casting and jigging tactics. Matt owns and operates a 27' Onslow Bay, and has several other charter captains and run and gun boats under his wing.Matt is a wealth of knowledge and is extremely passionate about all types of fishing. In this conversation, Matt takes us through his charter fishing program. We talk about different tactics that we use for chasing striped bass and tuna throughout New England. Matt goes into detail on how he approaches light tackle tuna fishing. He talks about everything from rigging, finding fish, to approaching schools of busting tuna. His experience and skills in hunting these fish on the surface is incredible. He is on another level in terms of understanding bluefin behavior, patterns, and nuances. When Chris is not on the water pursuing these fish from above, he dedicates his time supporting his fellow bluefin tuna fishermen. He and his family have always been advocates for the fishery. Chris has spent many years involved in both the science and management pertaining to numerous Gulf of Maine, East Coast, and Atlantic-wide fisheries. Over the past three years, Chris and his father spearheaded the development of a non-profit organization known as "The Bluefin Collaborative" whose focus is to connect bluefin tuna fishermen up and down the East Coast and work towards building a genetic data base on fish harvested and released. These efforts are to help showcase the health of the Atlantic bluefin tuna stock, pin point new spawning areas, and gather new migration data on this species. For the past two seasons, we have helped collect samples for Chris and "The Bluefin Collaborative", taking fin and finlet clips from fish we have caught throughout our charter fishing season. We are excited to continue this for years to come, and help refine the sampling process with Chris and the rest of the TBC team.In this conversation we discuss international bluefin tuna quota management, highly migratory species politics, old data sets vs what is being collected by "The Bluefin Collaborative", and much more. On this episode we were excited to host Ben Gahagan and Bill Hoffman from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF). Ben Gahagan is the Recreational Fisheries Program Leader at DMF.  In his career he has served on multi-jurisdictional technical committees, stock assessment teams, and used a variety of techniques to understand the migratory movements and stock composition of fish as small as river herring and as large as Atlantic bluefin tuna. Ben is a lifelong angler and outdoorsman, he has been lucky enough to spend many hours pursuing those same fish and many other finned, furred, and feathered critters.Bill Hoffman is a senior fisheries biologist for the state, where he has been working for 26 years. He manages the Fisheries Research and Monitoring project which includes leading a team that collects critical data, both at sea and dockside, for a variety of Massachusetts commercial fisheries to support stock assessment analysis and fisheries management decisions. On the fisheries research side, Bill specializes in tagging fish using acoustic telemetry.  He has conducted multiple studies focusing on questions that range from understanding basic fish migration patterns of cod and striped bass to fishery-induced mortality for striped bass, cod, cusk, and haddock. When he is not at work, he can be found on his own boat fishing for giant bluefin tuna or in a tree archery hunting for whitetail deer on the Northshore of Massachusetts and in New Hampshire.  Last fishing season we collaborated with Ben, Bill, and the rest of their team, in helping them collect data for their recent efforts in analyzing post release mortality for striped bass. In doing this, we are working towards establishing healthy release best practices for this species.  Ben and Bill are developing these resources for recreational anglers that target striped bass and they include proper fish handling upon landing, how to use circle hooks, fishing tactics, etc.In this conversation we discuss this research program and our fishing trips from last season. Our guest on this episode of the podcast is Capt. Ali Hussainy from Local Knowledge TV and BD Outdoors. Ali grew up living in San Diego, California and his first fishing experiences began with trout and other freshwater species as a kid. Fishing became a passion that only increased exponentially with his first exposure to saltwater fishing. After spending years in the tech industry, Ali and his partner Jason Hayashi took the leap of faith to make their love of fishing a business itself. The proliferation of the Bloodydecks.com fishing forum and now BD Outdoors, online fishing magazine; has launched them into the forefront of web-based entertainment, information and marketing.Since 2016, Ali and his good friend and partner, Captain Rush Maltz, have produced, hosted, and grown one of the most entertaining and cinematic fishing shows on television, Local Knowledge. The show explores the culture of fishing itself and follows real life characters that spend their lives dedicated to fishing and the outdoors. For the past seven seasons of filming, Ali has been fortunate enough to experience some of the most incredible fisheries that the world has to offer.  He has pursued many species of saltwater fish from Guatemala, to Magdalena Bay in Mexico, to PEI Canada, to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Season 7 of Local Knowledge airs on April 20th, and new content airs every Sunday until September 2022.Locally in California, Ali has been dialed in on the EPIC bluefin tuna bite that has been occurring offshore of San Diego for the past several years. Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! Our guest on this episode of the podcast is Doctor Gregory Skomal. Greg is an accomplished marine biologist, underwater explorer, photographer, aquarist, and author. He has been a fisheries biologist with Massachusetts Marine Fisheries since 1987 and currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program (MSRP). He holds a master's degree from the University of Rhode Island and a PhD from Boston University.  Greg is a perfect example of someone having a dream and persisting to make it a reality. As a young boy, after the release of the movie Jaws in 1975, he aspired to become the well known fictitious marine biologist and shark scientist Matt Hooper...and that is exactly what happened. For more than 35 years Greg has been one of the most renowned marine biologists and shark scientists in the world.Greg has been actively involved in the study of life history, ecology, and physiology of sharks. His shark research has spanned multiple fish habitats around the globe; from the frigid waters of the Arctic Circle to coral reefs in the tropical Central Pacific. In recent years, Greg has become the face of all things shark-related on Cape Cod.  Skomal and his associate, John Chisholm, were the first to successfully tag and track great whites in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean using high-tech tags through the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. The organization now has the ability to track local and long-range movements, study behavior and biology, and estimate population size of great whites in the area. Since Greg began tagging white sharks in Cape Cod and MA, he and his crew have tagged over 280 white sharks. We have been fortunate to know Greg since we were kids, and we have always admired his passion and knowledge for the ocean. Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! Our guest on this episode of the podcast is our good friend and fellow charter boat  captain  Capt. Jason Stock (@captain_Jason_stock).Jason is an absolute gem. He grew up in St. Petersburg Florida, has been fishing his entire life, and has over 15 years of full time charter fishing experience.  Jason is an accomplished tournament fisherman  as well and has podium finishes in the FLW Red Fish Series and various other inshore and offshore tournaments across the state of Florida. He has been featured in publications such as Florida Sportsman, Saltwater Sportsman, Kayak Angler, Saltwater Angler, Louisiana Sportsman and Waterline Magazine.Jason also has a ton of fishing experience beyond his normal territory in the Gulf of Mexico. Over the past decade, Jason has fished from PEI Canada to Key West, across the Gulf in Louisiana,  and in Panama. We have known Jason since 2015 where we met in Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada. We were fishing with the Bruce Brothers during the fall giant bluefin tuna season in PEI and Jason and his wife Heather were charter clients  one day. The day was epic. Hand feeds, kite bites and rough seas. Jason caught and released a 1000+ lber and a 700lber out of the chair. Throughout the day,  he mentioned that he was/is a charter captain out of Anna Maria Island, FL...and that is where our grandparents lived for over 30 years. Very small world. Since then, we have been close friends, our families hang out together, and we fish a lot together.Jason is a true salt of the earth and one of the funniest humans on the planet. He has his own vocabulary, and is never short of hysterical phrases. He is also a fishy dude. Jason is always dialed in and super passionate about what he does. There is no wonder why he fishes 200+ days a year and has a charter boat called "The Full Send."We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! Our guest on this episode of the podcast is Captain Mike Zajac from Canyon Runner Sportfishing. Mike began his offshore career on the Canyon Runner back in 1997... 25 years later his passion for offshore fishing has only grown stronger.  He has been a member of various tournament winning teams in addition to catching thousands of tuna over his tenure with the Canyon Runner. Capt. Mike has worked with each of the Captains who have fished with the Canyon Runner Fleet over the years and has taken something from each of them and continues to learn every time he heads offshore. “What people need to realize is the Captains and mates on these boats want to catch fish more than anyone else. While we understand fishing, it is our desire that separates us from the others.”  Captain Mike also prides himself on making sure the charters come away with a positive experience. “Our number one goal is to provide an everlasting experience for our customers. For some it may be catching a trophy bigeye tuna, for others it may be hooking into blue marlin. Either way, we want our customers to walk away remembering their experience. Customer satisfaction is paramount to our success.” Captain Mike is one of the mainstays of the Canyon Runner Team. He brings the sense of camaraderie to the team and a sense of humor to keep everyone relaxed. When Captain Mike is not pursuing pelagics throughout the summer months, he is teaching English at Asbury Park High School.  This gives him an advantage when speaking at the Canyon Runner seminars and events. His natural comfort speaking to people has allowed him to share his knowledge and translate it in terms so fishermen of all skill levels can learn from him. He has been a perennial Canyon Runner speaker covering a variety of topics about pursuing tuna from trolling to chunking to rigging baits. Captain Mike loves to share what he has learned and enjoys seeing others use the techniques he has taught them.We had a great time during this conversation with Mike. Lots of laughs, great stories, and a ton of expert knowledge shared by one of the best captains/mates in the charter fishing game.
