We're back to talk about ANOTHER prequel to The Exorcist (afilm so nice they had to tell the origin twice), but fortunately, this week Mike and Stephen are here to talk about the good one. Yes indeed, this week we're here to talk about the most expensive DVD feature of all time, the completedvision of Paul Schrader's Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. It's the Gallant to Harlin's Goofy, and as one might expect from a Schrader jam, it's a contemplative rumination on man's fallibility and culpability with regards toevil. It's certainly not the rock ‘em sock ‘em straight forward horror movie Morgan Creek anticipated, leading to it being shelved for The Beginning. Perhaps a horror crowd that's been raised on the sort of character studies A24has delivered over the past decade would be more receptive to the quiet character drama and standout performance from its lead Stellan Skarsgard delivered as a conflicted Father Merrin. In this final podcast of 2024 we conclude the December Shane Black Christmas series with a conversation about the Renny Harlin-directed The Long Kiss Goodnight. Over the course of our chat you will hear us try to make sense of the action movie landscape in 1996 and how The Long Kiss Goodnight fit or didn't fit into the changing times, Shane Black's crassness and its interplay with Harlin's innate directorial trashiness, the way Harlin needed a win after he quite literally brought down a studio and whether Geena Davis had what it takes to join the ranks of powerful female leads of the 80s and 90s. We also talk about Sam Jackson's zingers, Geena Davis' chopping skills and just how adept she was at putting on ice skates while pursuing a car. Tune in and enjoy! On October 13, 1982, in Morro Bay, California, the decomposed body of 43-year-old Dian Harlin was found in a stand of trees next to a beach, strangled with a leash belonging to one of her dogs. Her eccentric 47-year-old husband, Hugh Harlin, had failed to report her missing for eleven days, and given the couple’s turbulent relationship, Hugh became a potential suspect. Four years later, Hugh vanished without a trace, with his abandoned pick-up truck found by the side of the highway. Investigators were unable to determine if Hugh's disappearance was connected to Dian's murder, and both cases remain unsolved. On May 3, 1992, in Polk County, Florida, after attending a rodeo, 31-year-old Larry Costine and his 26-year-old girlfriend, Melissa Jo Sermons, returned to Larry's mobile home. Larry’s nude body was later discovered inside the trailer, having been shot four times, while Jo had gone missing. Initially, investigators suspected Jo had killed Larry and fled, but two decades later, law enforcement announced they believed Jo was also a victim, murdered by the same person who shot Larry. Despite Jo's ex-boyfriend being the prime suspect, there was insufficient evidence to charge him, and Jo was never found. Mark and Amy break down the Unsolved Mysteries segment and dive into the entire story. “Congratulations, Morgan. There's another town you've destroyed.”After the success of Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, director Renny Harlin wanted to establish his wife Geena Davis as an action star. He sought out a swashbuckling pirate adventure script for her to lead. Screenwriters Michael Frost Beckner and James Gorman had written an initial draft, but extensive rewrites resulted in multiple additional credited writers. With Geena Davis attached to the lead role of pirate captain Morgan Adams, finding the right co-lead proved challenging. Michael Douglas was originally set to play opposite Davis but dropped out due to issues over equal screen time. Numerous major stars were offered the role including Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, Russell Crowe, Liam Neeson and Daniel Day-Lewis before Harlin settled on Matthew Modine. With the stars finally set, cameras rolled on location in Malta and Thailand. But behind the scenes, the production was plagued with problems that led to massive cost overruns. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 1995 Golden Raspberry Awards Worst Director Nominees series with a conversation about Harlin's 1995 film CutThroat Island. Here's a hint at what we talk about:We discuss the issues with the constantly evolving script and poor dialogue, along with miscasting of the leads and lack of chemistry between Davis and Modine. We also get into the impressive practical effects and action set pieces, despite flaws elsewhere. And we talk about the legendary reputation of this box office bomb that sunk Carolco Pictures. Here are a few other points in our discussion:Renny Harlin's strengths and weaknesses as a directorThe great production design and cinematographyHow the film hasn't aged particularly wellOur armchair casting for who could have been better in the lead rolesIn the end, we found CutThroat Island to be a mixed bag with plenty of problems holding it back yet still quite entertaining and delivering a romping pirate adventure. It makes for an interesting case study in a big budget production gone awry. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. While Renny Harlin had a film in theaters, Paul Schrader was running his hands together. After having his Exorcist prequel literally taken away from him by James G Robinson and everyone else at Morgan Creek, Harlin's Exorcist The Beginning was proving to be a gamble that didn't pay off. So, with receipts not what they expected, Schrader was given an extra $35,000 by Morgan Creek to spice up his film and get it ready for release a year later in hopes of getting their investment back. The result is Dominion Prequel To The Exorcist. With star Stellan Skaarsgard proving to be the only cast member that was held over, Schrader saw his film released and…suffer much of the same fate as Exorcist The Beginning. Listen in as the boys review the first (and only?) Paul Schrader film for the Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast, and determine whether Dominion Prequel To The Exorcist is just as big a turkey as last week's film, or if it's an overlooked gem. And be sure to tune in next week as Garrett, Matt, and Mik put the finishing rites on this series (for now) and review the recently released David Gordon Green take on the franchise The Exorcist: Believer!

The story behind Exorcist: The Beginning is one that is even more strange than the hyenas in the actual movie. After hiring Paul Shrader and watching the final film he turned in, producer James G Robinson wasn't impressed. Even after famed editor Sheldon Kahn edited it to bits and Shrader worked on it himself, Robinson made a decision to scrap the film and start from scratch. The story of the Shrader film will be told next week. For now, we're here to talk about what new director Renny Harlin churned out as a gun for hire. With only six weeks to shoot, Harlin kept original star Stellan Skarsgard and put a whole new cast around him to make a film that wasn't that well received upon release. Join Garrett, Matt, and Mik as they dissect Harlin's effort and determine if it was a worthy effort given the circumstances. Only two weeks left of this series, and be sure to tune in next week as we look at Shrader's film and get one step closer to the power of Christ compelling us.

Hey folks, I’m Harlin and am going to tell you a story. Some say that I made it all up but I’m telling you that…
Hey folks, I'm Harlin and am going to tell you a story. Some say that I made it all up but I'm telling you that it's all true. You can believe it or not, but I'm sticking with it. I'm just a country boy who happened into a situation. I don't doubt it a bit that you would have handled things as well or probably better than I did, but there I was and someone had to do something. It's just like my grandpa told me every chance I got, "When the going gets rough, you have do do what you have to do." So I did. Let me tell you what happened and then you can decide for yourself. Did it really happen or am I just full of it? I have lived down a one lane road off the highway all my life. It's pretty much what you might expect. An old farm house where my grandpa was a boy and my folks and four brothers called home. I won't go on about that since that's not the story I am telling you. Even so, home is a place where you can get some good air and raise some hell now and then. If you know, you know and if not, I sure don't have time to educate you about being a country boy. I'll just leave it at that. I still don't know what got into me but one Tuesday morning I got it in my head that I needed to pack up and take the train to the big city to find out what that was all about. So That's what I did and there's where this story starts. As I stepped off the train, I found the surrounded by towering skyscrapers and honking cars. The noise and frenetic pace of the city were overwhelming at first, but eventually, I grew accustomed to it. The city was alive, filled with a cacophony of sounds: cars, buses, and taxis honking their horns, people chattering away in different languages, construction sites, and street performances. The sights were equally intoxicating: towering buildings with neon lights, busy markets full of people pushing their way through the crowds, and street food stands with their vibrant colors and irresistible smells. I started my day by wandering through the busy streets, taking in the sights and sounds of the city. I marveled at the department stores with their gleaming windows and the street performers who captivated crowds with their performances. I saw huge billboards advertising everything from cars to clothes to the latest gadgets. As I continued my exploration, I passed through different neighborhoods, each with its unique vibe and personality. I saw people from all walks of life, each with their own story to tell. I heard different languages being spoken and ate food from different cultures. As the sun started to set, I realized that I had never felt so alive. The city had awakened something inside me, and I knew I wasn't ready to leave just yet. So instead, I found a small apartment to rent for a few weeks and continued my exploration of the city. For the next few weeks, I continued discovering new things, meeting new people, and learning about different cultures. I ate at Michelin-starred restaurants and tiny street food stalls. I visited museums, galleries, and music festivals. I even tried my hand at salsa dancing, something I had never done before. Eventually, my time in the city came to an end, But just as I was preparing to go home, I noticed some odd happenings in the last neighborhood I visited. I did not understand their significance but knew I should stick around to better understand this unusual activity. I had noticed something strange happening in the last neighborhood I visited. People were whispering in hushed tones, and the normally bustling streets were eerily quiet. I tried to ask around to understand what was happening, but no one seemed willing to talk. Curiosity gnawed at me, and I knew I couldn't leave until I figured out what was going on. After asking around, I stumbled upon a small store with a handwritten sign that read "Open for business." October 13, 1982. Morro Bay, California. The decomposed body of 43-year old Dian Harlin is discovered in a stand of trees next to a beach and she has been strangled to death with a leash belonging to one of her dogs. It turns out that Dian's eccentric 47-year old husband, Hugh Harlin, had failed to report her missing for eleven days and since the couple was known for having a turbulent relationship, Hugh becomes a potential suspect in his wife's murder. Four years later, Hugh inexplicably vanishes without a trace after his abandoned pick-up truck is discovered by the side of the highway. Investigators are unable to determine if Hugh's disappearance is connected to Dian's murder, but both cases are never solved. May 3, 1992. Polk County, Florida. After attending a rodeo, 31-year old Larry Costine and his 26-year old girlfriend, Melissa Jo Sermons, return to Larry's mobile home. Larry's nude body is eventually discovered inside the trailer and since he was shot four times and Jo has gone missing, investigators initially suspect that Jo killed Larry and went on the run. However, two decades later, law enforcement announces that they now believe Jo was a victim and was murdered by the same person who shot Larry. While Jo's ex-boyfriend is considered to be the prime suspect, there is not enough evidence to charge him with the crime and Jo is never found. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover two unsolved mysteries in which one half of a couple was murdered while the other half went missing. If you have information on the Hugh & Dian Harlin case, please contact the Morro Bay Police Department at (805) 772-6225. If you have information on the Larry Costine & Melissa Jo Sermons case, please contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office at (863) 533-0344. Searching for a hit and retooling a good script, John McTiernan reteamed with Bruce Willis to salve the let-down of Harlin's Die Hard 2 with "Die Hard with a Vengeance". Attaching Sam Jackson and Jeremy Irons, did they create new magic or dilute the memory of an action classic?

Renny Harlin is one of the great action film directors who has had a huge influence on the genre and continues to have a lot of love and passion for his craft. He's bringing that enthusiasm and lots of helpful insights to the conversation today. In this episode, we talk about… What made Renny Harlin decide he wanted to be a film director and his early influences growing up in Finland, which has a very small movie industry. How much Harlin loves what he does and how grateful he is to do what he does. Harlin's early days making commercials and then getting noticed and transitioning to TV, and finally to feature films. How Harlin survived and stayed motivated when he first moved to the US and was living in complete poverty, trying to break into the industry. Making the jump from living paycheck to paycheck to being on the cusp of the action movie genre (with films like Die Hard 2) to being able to turn down work. Why you need to keep luck happen by working hard and being persistent. Lessons Harlin learned the hard way throughout his career. Why he's walked away from certain opportunities that have come his way. How technology has changed throughout Harlin's career and how that impacts his approach. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today, Dan and Conor are honored to have a filmmaker who gave us some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters of all time: Renny Harlin! The Finnish director has a new film out called The Misfits, starring Pierce Brosnan, Nick Cannon, and Jamie Chung. Our B-Sides include Harlin's first film Born American, his Andrew Dice Clay-starrer The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, and the much-maligned, underrated pirate adventure Cutthroat Island. Harlin is a very honest and open guest here, and we touch on many different moments throughout his accomplished and eclectic career. From the struggles and risks of getting Born American made, to the lessons learned on hits like Cliffhanger, and the cultural appraisal of films like Ford Fairlane and Cutthroat. Other topics include Harlin's upcoming Inspector Palmu movie (a longtime passion project for him), a deep dive into the complexities of making every decision in the director's chair, and longing for the days when practical action was a more common occurrence on a film set. In This Episode The Book Evangelists discuss The Time Machine by H. G. Wells and share our attempts to adapt a public domain work into a new story. Morning Chatter Lissa left her house on the same summer vacation she planned months ago. Marian is finishing edits on her book! (And her reward will be even more edits on another project!) The Time Machine by H. G. Wells Discussion The Time Machine: Problems and Pleasures of reading Classic Literature • What do we think about the Eloi and the Morlocks and Weena? • If you were imagining a utopia, what would it look like? Can there even be a utopia? • Using a frame story, two first person narrators, a narrator who is removed from the action • What's with that ending? What do we think happened to The Time Traveler? Challenge: Reimagining Classic Works How did we decide to do this again? Lissa was trying to fulfill a writing dare to write fanfiction. And wondered if reimagining classic works is a kind of fanfiction. Ultimately she wrote a short story imagining Kirsten Cohen (the mom from the early 2000's television drama The O.C.) in 2020 awaiting the birth of her first grandchild during the pandemic and racial justice protests. Is reimagining a story more fun to write? Easier? More challenging? What makes it more fun for the reader? Do readers like the puzzle to see what they recognize from the original? To see what the author has changed? The familiarity with the original concept? Reimagining of classic public domain stories can be published, unlike fanfiction based on current characters. New Podcast Segment: Bad Idea Corner and/or Slush Pile It's amazing to think about and imagine stories we don't ever have to write. Lissa's reimagining of Treasure Island as a Modern Middle Grades Coming of Age story. Jemma Hawkins lives with her mom in a struggling Bed and Breakfast, and across town her father runs a pirate themed miniature golf and go-cart destination. Jemma rarely sees her father, but after a mysterious visitor arrives, her mother encourages her to spend the summer at mini golf. As Jemma gets to know her father better, she uncovers a mystery based in her parents' past, including the slightly creepy place they met, a large amusement park called Treasure Island. Marian's reimagining of The Great Gatsby in Space. The glittering city of Agorith has long been a playground both for the established aristocracy of the galaxy and those who seek to join them. Kase, the ambitious son of prosperous but provincial merchants, has arrived in the city looking to make his fortune. Using his family connections, he has managed to secure small quarters that overlook the truly fabulous homes of the rich. His neighbors fascinate him, especially one who seems to exist more in rumor than in flesh, Harlin. Coming Up Next episode: Marian and Lissa read Old Man's War by John Scalzi. Lissa discovered John Scalzi by way of Wil Wheaton narrating the audiobook of Ready Player One almost a decade ago. This led her to Redshirts, which turned into reading (listening to) almost all of Scalzi's fiction. Our Show Notes include mentions and recommendations, all linked for your convenience.
