Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com has given us some great articles to look at this month. Somehow, she found an article written on the issues of cross contamination in restaurants in Malta. It's amazing to see that celiacs in another part of the world with a very diverse cuisine from ours have the same issues ordering food in restaurants. As well there is an interesting study that was done recently looking at the blood tests done with children and how indicative they are of a final diagnosis of celiac disease. The aim of this study is to identify a benchmark level for blood tests that would indicate a biopsy for a child is not necessary. We discuss the curious issue of Novak Djokovic, the international tennis star who has publicly said that he is on a gluten free diet for his health. There is more behind this story, and much of it will leave you with more questions than answers. Are you familiar with the FODMAP diet? Ellen explains the premise of the diet and how it is being used by some celiacs who are struggling to gain remission from their symptoms. In Episode 93 of this podcast, I interviewed Steven J. Singer, who runs Fody Foods, helping those who are using the diet as a tool towards better health. Ellen gives us more information on how you can post questions on Instagram for Selena DeVries @celiac_dietitian. As well Selena offers a focused Facebook group for those with persistent symptoms, along with courses and assistance on her website www.healthbean.ca. Ellen and I go on to speak about food including the Taco Revolution foodtruck, Trumps Foods Hazelnut Torte on Amazon.ca, the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet online cooking classes and Stella's Perogies, which my daughter recently found in Ontario at a Metro store. Celiac disease is a big risk factor for SIBO, and yet, it’s often an overlapping condition that many doctors miss. In today’s conversation, I’m joined by Dr. Lisa Shaver to discuss the relationship between leaky gut, gluten, and the body’s autoimmune response in someone with celiac disease—and how these mechanisms can lead to other gut disorders like SIBO. We also get into why gluten has become public enemy number 1 in today’s modern food culture, whether non-celiac gluten sensitivity is a legit condition, and the dangers of someone going on a gluten-free diet without proper medical due diligence. Dr. Shaver is a naturopathic physician and acupuncturist in Portland, Oregon whose private practice focuses on celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, GERD, SIBO, IBS and other digestive disorders. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: The genetic components of celiac disease and what triggers its expression How leaky gut is impacted by the vagus nerve, emotional traumas or stressors, and the downwind impact for both autoimmune conditions like celiac and SIBO Why celiac disease is on the rise Common mistakes people make when testing for celiac or unpacking patients’ symptoms The most important lifestyle changes celiacs need to make in addition to eliminating gluten Whether non-celiacs with SIBO should eliminate gluten from their diet How the gluten-free diet and the low FODMAP approach can be explored in tandem The difference between food sensitivities and autoimmune-based food reactions And so much more... Resources, mentions and notes: Dr. Shaver's website Episode 3 on the gut hormone connection with Dr. Jolene Brighten Phoebe’s book, The Wellness Project – which has the whole story of how I detoxed my life! This week was the continuation of a discussion on the FODMAP diet. I speak with Steven J. Singer who started a food company called Fody Foods to provide foods that fit into the FODMAP diet. Ketchup made without garlic, isn't something that occurs to me, but I can appreciate that if garlic causes you stomach issues, this could be very special. Steven had been an owner of Glutino Foods, before starting Fody Foods. He is strongly rooted in gluten free and brings that wealth of knowledge to his FODMAP friendly foods. The elemental diet is the most impactful data-backed treatment for SIBO. And yet, it’s often misused, misunderstood and generally met with last resort trepidation. Today on the podcast, I’m joined by Dr. Michael Ruscio to demystify this approach and talk more about how he uses it for SIBO treatment, IBD, celiac, and other cases involving a highly-damaged gut. You guys have been asking for this episode, so I’d love to hear what you think! In today’s episode, Shivan Sarna is sharing her experience of uncovering her root causes, from Lyme disease to mold exposure, and how she became the patient expert she is today. Shivan is the founder of SIBO SOS, where she hosts monthly master classes to support others on their journey to understand, treat, and manage IBS, SIBO, and other digestive issues. Over the last 5 years, the low FODMAP approach has become the gut healing diet du jour, with everyone from naturopaths to conventional MD’s prescribing it for IBS relief. On today’s episode we get into the nitty gritty of what eliminating fermentable carbs from your life actually looks like, the healing potential for your SIBO, and how this diet can effect your long-term gut health for better or for worse. If Allison Siebecker, our guest on episode 1, is the queen of SIBO, Kate Scarlata is definitely the queen of FODMAP’s. She’s been writing out this dietary approach for IBS and creating tons of research on her site since long before people like myself were aware of it. She is also the author of several books, her latest of which is called The Low FODMAP Diet Step by Step. There’s no one approach to SIBO, which is what often makes patients so confused. And today’s guest has also stood in those shoes. This week, Phoebe is joined by Dr. Allison Siebecker, who is nicknamed “the Queen of SIBO.” She is a naturopathic physician, award-winning author, clinician and teacher. And if you’ve already done a deep dive on SIBO, you have likely already landed on her free informational website, siboinfo.com, which is an unparalleled resource for treatment and awareness. More importantly, she’s a chronic SIBO case herself, and we’ll hear about how her own struggles inspired the amazing work she’s now doing in the field. This episode covers a ton of ground, including the SIBO-IBS connection, symptoms, testing, root causes, risk factors, the three main treatments for SIBO, how to choose a diet that’s right for you, and the best methods for prevention. It’s a perfect starting point if you want to understand all aspects of SIBO in under an hour.
