Each year 60 to 70 million people in the U.S. suffer from digestive issues with IBS ranking as one of the top diagnoses. But what exactly is irritable bowel syndrome and how is it linked to SIBO and leaky gut syndrome? We get into all of this and more in this episode with Phoebe Lapine. Phoebe tells us about her journey to reclaim her health after being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and then having to do it all over again when she started to suffer from SIBO. She breaks down SIBO and the related gut health issues into an easy to understand primer on the topic while sharing some great tips on healing from SIBO as well as preventing gut health issues. We also talk about her new book, SIBO Made Simple. In the “You Want Me To Do What??” section, Nicole talks about a recent experience with antibiotics that completely wiped out her gut microbiome and caused her major stomach issues for several weeks. Episode Recap: Interview with Phoebe Lapine - 1:59, “You Want Me To Do What??” section - 43:36 Highlights: Gut health used to refer to the good flora in your large intestine IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) - research shows that a majority of IBS cases caused by SIBO SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) - too much bacteria too far up in your small intestine Leaky gut (intestinal permeability) - bacteria eats through the mucus barrier of your intestinal tight junctions, which can cause inflammation and potentially an autoimmune disease Risk factors for SIBO fall under three categories: biochemical abnormalities, migrating motor complex abnormalities, and structural abnormalities Biochemical abnormalities that can put you at risk for SIBO: Low stomach acid Immuno-compromised Missing gallbladder/no bile salts Low pancreatic enzymes Migrating motor complex - propulsive movement that kicks in during periods of fasting (after 90 minutes) and sweeps undigested material through the small intestine Risk factors affecting migrating motor complex: Stress Snacking Hashimoto’s/other autoimmune diseases Food poisoning Structural issues that are risk factors for SIBO: Anything pressing or bearing down on intestines Kink in your intestines, abdominal tumor, prior abdominal surgery that didn’t heal right If you think you have SIBO/gut issues, start by spending a week: Start with your diet and noticing what bothers you Chewing your food thoroughly Not snacking, leaving 4 hours between meals for digestion Cook or puree foods that might irritate you Try a low FODMAP diet You can heal from gut health issues, but you need to drill down to your root causes, treat and then repair Top 3 Tips for Supporting Your Gut Health: Chew your food thoroughly Stomach acid is important -- support that Avoid chemicals and antibiotics as much as possible AND get dirty by touching/spending time in nature Resources: Where to find Phoebe Lapine: Website: https://feedmephoebe.com/ Instagram: @phoebelapine SIBO Made Simple The Wellness Project

What do you need in your healing arsenal to treat SIBO? Let's take a deeper dive into SIBO with food and health writer Phoebe Lapine. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode150. Topics Discussed in This Episode: Intermittent fasting The root causes of SIBO and its symptoms Tips to improve stomach acid Why women get more bloated than men Why getting the SIBO test is important and how you should prepare for it What supplementation you need if you're prone to SIBO How food and nutrition can impact SIBO The connection between Hashimoto's and SIBO Key Takeaways: SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. It's not a disease in and of itself but a sign that something has gone wrong in your body. The majority of your gut bacteria is in your large intestine. Your small intestine is where you absorb your nutrients, so it isn't designed to withstand large numbers of gut bacteria. When a large number of bacteria is present there, they compete for your nutrients. Research shows that the vast majority of all IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) cases are caused by SIBO. Your liver is an integral part of your digestive system. When you're told "You have to heal your gut," this includes your liver too. Diet is not a treatment for SIBO. Rather, it's a supplemental strategy that can help you reduce the symptoms. Diets that are primarily for SIBO/IBS are incredibly restrictive. It would be ideal to find some sort of a happy medium. If you reduce your diet too much during treatment, you may risk that some of the bacteria just go into hibernation. On the other hand, you don't want to be eating things that are going to make you miserable. Action Steps: Improve your stomach acid by taking fresh lemon juice. Or you can dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with water and drink it 15 to 30 minutes before a meal. Practice mindful eating. If you're experiencing any symptoms of SIBO, get the SIBO test. Supplement with digestive enzymes and vitamin D. Eat like you're a pregnant person if you know that you're prone to food poisoning. Space out your meals and don't snack as much. Phoebe said: “Everyone's SIBO is very different from one another, partially because everyone's microbiome is more unique than a fingerprint. That is true no matter where the bacteria are taking up residence. And it's one reason why SIBO can be complicated to treat." "People often forget that treatment is very different from healing. And oftentimes, treatment in and of itself can cause more damage and require more healing." Thanks for listening! COOLA from the Detox Market is an Environmental repair with radical recovery After-Sun Lotion Quotes “The Hashimoto's SIBO connection was fascinating to me, not things that I ever truly understood before.” “The interesting thing about SIBO is because the food poisoning part is very insidious because it is this kind of two-day experience. And then most people are feeling okay afterward but because of what happens in the gut and it's kind of actually an acute case of auto-immunity, where your immune system in the process of attacking whatever pathogen has come in accidentally attacks the nerve cells in your migrating motor complex, which is the heart of all of SIBO.” “It really just depends on you. There is a very diverse toolkit and lots of options, and unfortunately, some people do need all of those options in order to kind of hone in on the one that resonates or on the combination of things that resonates because the bacteria in your gut are incredibly diverse.” “IBS is the most prevalent gastrointestinal diagnosis in the world” “Where people kind of get too bogged down in thinking that CBO is kind of a disease and how do I get rid of CBO? When in reality you should be asking the questions of why did I get CBO? What it is and what it isn't.” “There had to be a vulnerability and a catalyst. And then you bring those two together and now here we are, or all your vulnerabilities just eventually added up right over time.” “The hallmark would be the consistency. So, you know, kind of feeling that way and the bloat every time you eat, waking up with a flat stomach, but as soon as you eat breakfast, that changes” “Primary test is something called a breath test.” “Start to pay attention, you will know. What is actually really irritating your body, it is the most compelling thing to get you to make a change” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Today on the podcast we are Simplifying SIBO with Phoebe Lapine! Phoebe is the Author of Sibo Made Simple and The Wellness Project, she is a gut detective, and a recipe developer for those doomed to restrictive elimination diets for health conditions. After an incredibly inspiring wellness journey and experiment (that actually turned into a book!), Phoebe started down a rabbit hole of what it takes to beat SIBO.What is SIBO: small intestinal bacteria overgrowth. An issue of LOCATION bacteria imbalance, not TYPE. Symptoms of SIBO:-IBS cycle of diarrhea, constipation-constant bloating, not just after meals-burping in the middle of meals-food sensitivities-autoimmune diseases-joint pain"You don't have SIBO for life. The only reason that this would be a chronic condition is if you haven't uncovered what's causing your digestive system to not work as it's supposed to."Three buckets of SIBO root causes:The bacteria aren't properly killed. Low stomach acid due to hormone imbalance, your immune system, or invasive surgeries. Things don't get moved through your GI tract properly. (Your MMC- the street sweeper!)Dietary imbalances. Changing your diet is not the same as treatment. Changing your diet for SIBO should be a short term change, not a long term lifestyle change because the same foods that you will read to cut out can be so beneficial to your gut once healed. You will learn:What is meal spacing, and how does snacking interfere with our MMC?The NON food shifts in healthy gut protocols! How your CLOTHING affects your digestionWhat is Healthy Hedonism and why is enjoying our food and life so essential to our healing? You can learn more about Phoebe on instagram @phoebelapine and can find her books and resources on her website at https://feedmephoebe.com/You can follow me on instagram @keepyourplantson or find my recipes, life changing nutrition and health program, and more resources at https://www.howtokeepyourplantson.com/

Why won't my IBS go away? Well it could be SIBO, in fact 60% of IBS is caused by SIBO but what is SIBO? In this episode we discuss the what, the how and the practicalities of SIBO healing. If you are bloated, filled with gas, brain fog, join pain, inflammation, mood irregularities and either rapid weight loss or weight gain, these could all be symptoms of SIBO. Our guest expert on SIBO is Phoebe Lapine, food and health writer, gluten-free chef, speaker, and the voice behind the award-winning blog Feed Me Phoebe. Phoebe has been writing about her health struggles for years, including her fight to overcome Hashimoto’s. Thankfully for the rest of us, she turned her SIBO diagnosis in 2017 into ammunition for an incredible new book SIBOMadeSimple. Hippocrates has famously stated that "all disease begins in the gut." Two thousand years later, he may have been on to something. When your gut is adequately tuned and functioning well, your chances of getting sick reduce dramatically. But when it comes to our understanding of how we do that, things tend to get complicated. Do we take probiotics? What type? How do I know when I have gut issues? None of this is apparent. Phoebe Lapine is a food and health writer, gluten-free chef, speaker, and the voice behind the award-winning blog https://feedmephoebe.com/ (Feed Me Phoebe). Named by Women's Health Magazine as the top nutrition read of 2017, Phoebe's debut memoir, https://feedmephoebe.com/book/ ("The Wellness Project,") chronicles her journey with the autoimmune disease Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. She is the host of the SIBO Made Simple podcast and author of the forthcoming book by the same name. She helps people newly diagnosed or chronically fighting small intestine bacterial overgrowth. Phoebe's work has appeared in Food & Wine, Marie Claire, SELF, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and Mind Body Green, who named her one of 100 Women to Watch in Wellness. Phoebe and I discuss SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) and the symptoms, testing, types, and treatment, and how depression and anxiety play a role in gut-health issues. We also talk about the low-FODMAP diet, and overcoming food fear after elimination diets. Phoebe Lapine is a gluten-free chef and author whose latest book is ‘SIBO Made Simple’ provides great content and information about SIBO, the root causes and how it can be treated along with healing recipes and practical strategies to rebalance the gut. She also shares concise information about how the gut’s protective mechanisms work and the issues that can lead to SIBO. With gut health being incredibly important for many functions in the body achieving the right balance is key and Phoebe, as a SIBO sufferer, knows exactly what it’s like and provides great practical advice on how to heal. This is an episode that will tell you everything you need to know about SIBO from what it is and isn’t to how to treat it effectively. KEY TAKEAWAYS If there is a breach of the small intestinal wall by bacteria they are then in direct contact with your immune system. Damage to the intestinal wall can lead to a leaky gut issue which can create a feedback loop with autoimmunity and this can cause systematic inflammation. The gases bacteria release are inflammatory and damaging SIBO is complex and usually a result of more than one of the body’s protective mechanisms having issues. Any deficiency in the natural microbial substances that we make or deficiency in the immune system can result in SIBO. The migrating motor complex carries food through the intestine and damage to this can be a cause of SIBO. A gut not functioning well will mean issues in the conversion of T4 to T3. T3 is essential for many functions in the body including the production of stomach acid and fuelling the migrating motor complex. if you have a hormone imbalance such as oestrogen dominance the conversion will be even more challenging for T4 to T3. Bacteria carry their own histamine load and it’s all about keeping everything in balance. 50% of people with SIBO will also have some sort of fungal overgrowth as the lack of balance will cause overgrowth not only in the gut but also in other areas of the body There are 3 main treatments for SIBO antibiotics, herbal antimicrobials and an elemental diet. It's the LAST episode of the podcast folks. I know, I know. I'm really bummed too. But I'm closing it out with the second installment of my ASK A SIBO AMIGO solo episode, and we are talking all about diet and putting your new food rules into action in the kitchen. As the podcast comes to a close, I wanted to leave you SIBO Amigos with some of my hardest earned lessons from the trenches. The process of writing the SIBO Made Simple book, in many ways, was a process of distilling their wisdom into super practical takeaways and to-do's. So the entire manuscript is kind of one big extension of the SIBO Amigo Digest. But I still managed to simplify even further and come up with 10 rules of thumb for each step of the SIBO journey: investigation, treatment, diet and cooking. In today's episode we will talk about my biggest pieces of advice for the food piece. It's a short and sweet one with yours truly that will help you step away from the minutiae and focus on the big picture goals of healing. Lastly, I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who's written me about how the podcast has been a game changer for them. It was only supposed to be 12 episodes, but once I started peeling back the layers of the onion, I just couldn't stop. It was such a JOY to produce and you guys make every bit of hard work worth it. It's not a goodbye - just a see you later! And who knows, as new research emerges, I might just be back for more. Resources, mentions and notes: The SIBO Made Simple Book – ON SHELVES NOW!! And yet the bacteria in various tick borne illness can be an underlying cause for many people who struggle with mysterious gut symptoms and chronic overlapping health problems. In today’s conversation, I’m joined by Dr. Tom Messinger to parse out how these bacteria differ from one another, how they behave in the body, and why they can lead to other co-infections like SIBO, mold toxicity, and mast cell activation syndrome. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: • The barriers to diagnosing lyme and the most thorough testing • Why tick borne illnesses become more severe over time • Strategies for treatment beyond antibiotics, but also how you can support your gut while taking conventional medications • Babesiosis, Alpha Gal syndrome, and other permutations of tick-borne illnesses • How to combat neurological damage from lyme • Why these conditions overlap with SIBO and which to treat first • And so much more… Resources, mentions and notes: The SIBO Made Simple Book – Available to Pre-Order! Endometriosis affects 10 percent of women, and yet, it often takes a woman 10 doctors visits in order to get diagnosed. An inflammatory condition by nature, as endo develops it can put a huge strain on the digestive system, leading to IBS symptoms and often SIBO. Joining me to discuss how to heal the gut while tackling endo through more invasive measures is Dr. Iris Kerin Orbuch, the Director of the Advanced Gynecologic Laparoscopy Center in Los Angeles, and author of Beating Endo: How to Reclaim Your Life From Endometriosis. Though the cornerstone of endometriosis treatment is surgical excision of Endometriosis, Dr. Kerin Orbuch understands the importance of incorporating integrative medicine and combining eastern & western medicine approaches in helping her patients heal and getting them on the road to recovery. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: What is endometriosis and why is it so hard to diagnose Why someone develops endo Overlapping conditions from autoimmune diseases to gut disorder, and especially painful bowel syndrome (Interstitial Cystitis) Ways to heal after Endo surgery that would make someone less likely to develop SIBO How to manage the emotional stress of dealing with both endo and SIBO Limiting systemic inflammation through diet And so much more… Resources, mentions and notes: The SIBO Made Simple Book – Available to Pre-Order! We are back for the 4th and final season of the SIBO Made Simple podcast—and man, what a different world we’re returning to. I could have never predicted when I recorded my last episode on February 20th that all anyone would be thinking about in the health space was viruses. But here we are. To satisfy all your burning questions about Covid-19 and further educate ourselves on how the immune system interacts with our gut, I’ve got Dr. Susan Blum returning to the show to discuss all things antibodies. As someone with an autoimmune disease (and the host of this here podcast), I thought I was pretty hip to this line of immune defense, but all the recent discussion of viral antibodies has revealed that there are some major gaps in my knowledge on how these immunoglobulins are produced, what functions they serve, and why they sometimes hurt rather than help. Dr. Blum is the author of the iconic book The Immune System Recovery Plan and more recently, Healing Arthritis. She is also our featured guest on episode 8 of the podcast discussing leaky gut and the SIBO-autoimmune connection. It’s a great place to start if you’re new to how the immune system works. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: The difference between T-cells and B-cells How long different types of antibodies stick around for Antibody testing and why there have been problems with Covid-19 results Other ways our body develops defenses to viruses besides antibodies that makes a second infection less likely How antibodies to foods form and what IgG food sensitivity testing tells you about your long-term tolerance to certain ingredients Whether SIBO or other forms of dysbiosis make you more immunocompromised or susceptible to viruses Immunoglobulin supplements and other ways to fortify your immune system And so much more… Resources, mentions and notes: Dr. Blum’s website Dr. Blum’s books: The Immune System Recovery Plan and Healing Arthritis Dr. Blum’s new course Episode 8: The SIBO-Autoimmune Connection with Dr. Blum SBI Protect immunoglobulins; IgG protect LoveBug Probiotics Immunity Formula Pre-Order the SIBO Made Simple book for immediate access to recipes! It’s the season 3 finale Q&A episode! And I have a dream guest here with me to answer all your lingering SIBO queries: the king of SIBO himself, Dr. Mark Pimentel. If you’ve already been down the SIBO rabbit hole, Dr. Pimentel likely needs no introduction. He’s the director of The Pimentel Lab at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, where he researches many pieces of the IBS puzzle, including gastrointestinal motility and bacterial overgrowths. He’s published dozens of studies on these subjects, and it’s fair to say that much of the data-backed information we’ve covered in the first 3 seasons of this podcast, has been discovered through Dr. Pimentel’s work. There were a few recurring macro themes to your questions, so in today’s episode, we’re going to focus on Post-Infectious IBS, Methane overgrowth, and Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO. If you don’t hear your question, don’t stress—there’s a big possibility I’ve covered it in a past episode already. Those who are new here might want to backtrack and listen to season 1, where we cover a lot of SIBO 101 topics related to the aftermath of a diagnosis. The podcast will be on hiatus until the fall while I focus on putting the finishing touches on the SIBO Made Simple book (!!). In the meantime, stay in touch via instagram (I’m @phoebelapine) and by subscribing to my newsletter. Of course, subscribing to the podcast is the best way to be sure you’ll know when new episode start airing again. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: The proper definition of IBS, Post-Infectious IBS and SIBO Why the IBS Smart Test is useful and how to decide when to use it versus a lactulose SIBO breath test How long it takes for Post-Infectious IBS antibodies to be cleared from the body Precautions those diagnosed need to take when traveling abroad Advice for methane SIBO and constipation sufferers and the latest research about what a different beast it is Atrantil as a treatment for methane SIBO What percentage of people with SIBO have Hydrogen Sulfide and treatment plans And so much more... Celiac disease is a big risk factor for SIBO, and yet, it’s often an overlapping condition that many doctors miss. In today’s conversation, I’m joined by Dr. Lisa Shaver to discuss the relationship between leaky gut, gluten, and the body’s autoimmune response in someone with celiac disease—and how these mechanisms can lead to other gut disorders like SIBO. We also get into why gluten has become public enemy number 1 in today’s modern food culture, whether non-celiac gluten sensitivity is a legit condition, and the dangers of someone going on a gluten-free diet without proper medical due diligence. We’ve covered a lot of ground on this season of SIBO Made Simple, and along the way we’ve received some amazing listener questions. In today’s episode, past practitioners come back to answer them all. Dr. Allison Siebecker tackles some of the nuances of SIBO treatment, Dr. Jason Wysocki chimes in on structural and thyroid-related queries, Dr. Will Cole talks about experimental treatments like FMT, and Kate Scarlata clears up some diet confusion. If you don’t hear your question, don’t stress—there’s a big possibility I’ll be getting to it with a dedicated episode in season 2. Make sure to listen to the end of this week’s podcast for a sneak peak of the topics we’ll be covering later this spring when SIBO Made Simple comes back from hiatus! And finally, don’t miss my recap of the SIBO Symposium in Portland, and a special announcement about a FREE program I'm offering April 1st: The Spring Gut Reset. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: What health trends are not good for you if you have SIBO, from CBD to adaptogens Do you take the herbs on an empty stomach or with meals? In today's season 1 bonus episode, you get a rare solo appearance from me, your SIBO Amigo Phoebe Lapine. Those who have read my book The Wellness Project know the first chapter of my story, from being diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis when I was 22, to spending the better part of my mid-twenties trying to get on board with the health hand I was dealt. In this episode, I talk about the many root causes that led to my autoimmune disease, and how some of those root causes later set the stage for SIBO. I'll also be answering listener questions on how I overcome health setbacks (including the 411 on my latest gut pot holes), what advice I would give someone recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's, and my biggest takeaways from the entire first season of SIBO Made Simple. If you're wondering the path I took to healing my SIBO and what the road forward looks like, give it a listen. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: The gap I experienced between conventional medicine and functional doctors Why eating gluten-free was such a game changer for my Hashimoto's How multiple parasites continue to be the invisible fence for my gut health What I learned from my year-long project of making one lifestyle change, one year at a time, and how I've applied those learnings to my SIBO recovery The herbal protocol and diet I used to treat my SIBO and how it changed my symptoms throughout the 4-month process And so much more… Resources, mentions and notes: Phoebe's book The Wellness Project Let a Podcast Out Course – Use code SIBOMADESIMPLE Post on My Hashimoto’s Story Post on My Thyroid and My Scale Post on SIBO 101: Root Causes and Testing Post on SIBO 2.0: Natural Remedies and Supplements Post on SIBO 3.0: Lifestyle Changes and Diet Low FODMAP Cooking Tips The Best Thyroid Super Foods 4 Weeks to Wellness Course- use code SIBOMADESIMPLE Hormonal Birth Control Episode 03 Rebecca Coomes' Patient Story Episode 10 Join the SIBO Made Simple Facebook Community Page Subscribe to receive a free download of the episode transcript This episode is brought to you by the Let a Podcast Out Course, a one of a kind podcasting resource that will take you from idea to execution in just 8 weeks. One of the most frequent SIBO Made Simple listener questions I’ve received revolves around the timing of treatment and diet. Is it better to feed the bacteria while on herbal or conventional antimicrobials by eating normally, or starve them with a low carb approach? In today’s episode, I’m joined by Dr. Nirala Jacobi, one of Australia’s leading SIBO experts, and the founder of The SIBO Doctor, an online professional education platform. More importantly regarding today’s topic, Dr. Jacobi has pioneered the SIBO Bi-Phasic Diet that has helped patients and practitioners better use the symptom reduction of diet and the killing power of herbal antimicrobials in tandem. For those trying to understand the role of diet in SIBO healing and treatment, this is a must listen. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: The bi-phasic diet and how it came to be Why we should feed versus starve our bacteria and how to time this strategy with other treatments Why diet isn’t a treatment in and of itself but a way to manage symptoms Leaky gut and its relationship to food sensitivities Why histamine intolerance and mass cell activation syndrome are common with both SIBO and candida or fungal overgrowth Die-off and how to tell if you’re reacting to endotoxins from bacteria or the treatment itself Resources, mentions and notes: Dr. Jacobi's website and clinic The SIBO Bi-Phasic Diet download The SIBO Specific Diet from Dr Allison Siebecker (also listen to episode 1 with Allison!)
