Send us a textThe mystery of stubborn digestive issues often leads to a single culprit hiding in plain sight: Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). In this illuminating conversation with world-renowned SIBO expert Dr. Allison Siebecker, we unravel the complexities of this common yet frequently misunderstood condition.Dr. Siebecker explains why SIBO occurs when bacteria normally found in our large intestine inappropriately colonize the small intestine, creating a cascade of symptoms from bloating and pain to irregular bowel movements. Most surprisingly, she reveals that past food poisoning episodes are the leading trigger, causing an autoimmune reaction that damages the gut's critical "housekeeper wave" – the migrating motor complex that normally sweeps bacteria away. The conversation dives deep into practical clinical wisdom, exploring why testing matters (symptoms don't reliably predict which bacterial gases are present), why treatments often fail (most cases require 2-5 treatment rounds), and why prokinetics are non-negotiable (they can quadruple remission time). Dr. Siebecker shares her preferred protocols for each type of SIBO – hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide – with specific herbal and pharmaceutical recommendations refined through years of clinical experience.Perhaps most valuable for long-suffering patients is the discussion of challenging cases. When SIBO seems impossible to resolve, underlying factors like mold illness, parasites, or histamine intolerance may be the missing piece. The episode also clarifies the confusing world of SIBO diets, explaining why the Low FODMAP diet isn't optimal for SIBO despite its popularity, and how the elemental diet can dramatically reduce bacterial levels when other approaches fail.Whether you're a clinician treating digestive disorders or someone struggling with persistent gut symptoms, this episode provides the roadmap you need to navigate the journey from diagnosis to lasting recovery. In today's episode, I'm diving into the complex interplay between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the Low FODMAP diet, and fertility. For many women trying to conceive, chronic symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, and irregular digestion aren't just uncomfortable, they can signal deeper imbalances that may be impacting reproductive health. Emerging research highlights how gut inflammation and microbiome disruptions, common in IBS, might influence hormone regulation and even contribute to conditions like endometriosis. The Low FODMAP diet is a science-backed approach to managing IBS and offers a potential pathway to calm gut distress and create a healthier internal environment for conception. But is it safe long-term? And how do we balance restrictive eating with the nutrient diversity critical for fertility? Today I unpack the different types of IBS, its root causes, the low FODMAPS diet along with practical strategies to optimize digestion, reduce inflammation, and support your body while TTC. Episode Highlights: The four types of IBS Your exhaustive list of root causes that cause digestive imbalances How IBS is diagnosed and why you still might not have answers to your digestive imbalances Nutritional therapies for supporting IBS Top “prokinetic foods” and how they can support digestion What is a Low FODMAPS diet? Keith's case posed a very common conundrum that we've seen in many with gut health issues - are we dealing with bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), fungal overgrowth (candida) or potentially both? We'll walk through some of the key indications that Keith's initial SIBO diagnosis was actually a candida case, and we'll cover the best testing and treatments that led to Keith's recovery. Low FODMAP and Low Carb Diets Outperform Drugs for IBS Treatment: In this episode of Intelligent Medicine, Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses a study published in the Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology Journal examining the effectiveness of diet versus drug interventions in managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The study presents findings from a single-blind, randomized control trial comparing low FODMAP, low carbohydrate diets, and pharmacological treatments. Results indicate that both diet groups significantly outperformed drug treatments in symptom severity reduction, with specific benefits observed in patients suffering from constipation and diarrhea-dominant IBS. Leyla highlights the advantages of dietary interventions as first-line treatments for IBS, the practical aspects of implementing these diets, and the study's broader implications for improving quality of life for IBS sufferers.
A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 165If you have coeliac disease, you've likely experienced gut issues, bloating, fatigue, or discomfort even when following a strict gluten-free diet. But have you ever wondered—is gluten always to blame? Many people with coeliac disease assume every symptom they experience is due to gluten exposure. However, other factors such as IBS, food intolerances, FODMAPs, stress, and gut imbalances can cause similar reactions. After my recent interview with Dr. Kim Faulkner Hogg, a leading coeliac disease dietitian, I began reflecting on my own experiences with gut health, including my diagnosis with IBS and my journey navigating the Low FODMAP diet.In today's episode of Gluten Free Thoughts, I'll dive into why gluten might not always be the culprit, share my personal story of living with both coeliac disease and IBS, and discuss how lifestyle factors like stress, mindfulness, and diet changes have transformed my gut health. If you're struggling with persistent gut symptoms, unexplained bloating, or ongoing health issues even after going gluten-free, this episode will help you explore other potential causes and solutions. What I'll cover:* Why it's important to slow down and be in touch with your own physical and mental health within this current fast-paced world * How meditation and yoga have been so positive in my own life * Recording and releasing sound bath with Annie & Justin last fortnight on the podcast * Reflecting on Kim Faulkner Hogg's episode, specifically in relation to other food intolerances and triggers * Thinking I was getting consistently glutened after my coeliac disease diagnosis* My own IBS and Low FODMAP story * Remembering gluten isn't always the source of symptoms* Areas I've been focussing on to improve my own physical and mental health recently* Teaser of next week's episode with Celiac Cruise founder Maureen Basye LinksListen to Dr Kim Faulkner Hogg episode Listen to sound bath with Annie & Justin episode Visit our websiteJoin A Gluten Free Podcast Facebook GroupGet in touchYou can find me on Instagram @a.gffamily or send an email to aglutenfreefamily@gmail.com

Public Policies vs Quality of Life for Celiacs We look at one county in the UK that is changing the way celiacs are able to buy and have assistance with the purchase of gluten free food – is this just an experiment in one area to see what might happen on a national scale? Bah Humbug! UK Scrapping Revered Gluten-Free Food Prescription Subsidy for Celiacs! The Low FODMAP diet is again a topic of discussion as many celiacs are using it to over time, identify what might be causing them digestive issues once they are established on the gluten free diet. Low-FODMAP Diet | Hope for Celiacs with Ongoing Symptoms? Ellen introduces us to a new study using MRI technology to measure the impact of the gluten free diet on celiacs and compares it to those eating a standard diet.
