Exercise habits are important in general, but the other areas of life that they can positively contribute to make them even more critical! Just because you were a college athlete, it doesn't mean that having exercise as part of your regular routine will be a lifelong simple thing to do. If you lose incorporating movement into your daily life, it is possible to get it back! Having healthy exercise habits isn't a use it or lose it kind of thing. Life happens, and our wellness goes up and down. Today's guest, Jenny Melrose, shares how she went from college athlete to exercising only when she had time. But has now worked to make movement as part of her daily habit! Jenny is a former reading specialist who “retired” from her teaching career when her blogging income far exceeded her salary. Through hard work and dedication, her lifestyle blog, The Melrose Family, became regularly sought out by nationally recognized brands such as Neutrogena, Smuckers, Glad, Costco, Stanley Steamer, Sara Lee, and many more. She is a content strategist that helps entrepreneurs better understand their messaging and unique position in the online space.  Now, she's combining her passion for teaching with her extensive experience of creating strategic content for online business owners via JennyMelrose.com and her podcast, Influencer Entrepreneurs with Jenny Melrose as well as her first book Influencer Entrepreneurs: The 4-Step Framework to Building Your Audience, Growing Your Business, and Making More Money Online. If you're feeling stuck and need some support to jumpstart your business, make sure to download Jenny's free guide! The Fluctuations of Exercise Routines Your routines for movement can change over your life. Jenny was a multi sport high school athlete and went on to play 2 sports in college. This gave her a routine to count on and made exercise easy. However after college, that structured routine went away and exercise was harder to keep up with. So just because you excelled at one point in your life, that doesn't mean it's set forever. Throughout the years your routine can be a roller coaster of ups and downs. If you are a routine oriented person, it makes getting a regular system hard. So finding something to help get that routine back is important. For Jenny it was deciding to train for a marathon. She had structure again, which made her bring regular exercise back into her life. After she had kids, it became hard again and it wasn't until she found an exercise program that she connected with that she was able to regularly exercise again. Lack of Exercise and How We Feel Moving our body is a very important part of overall wellness. When we don't move our body, we are not able to feel our best. This is especially true when we go through times of stress, which happens with all of us. As life happens and stress builds, we start to feel things like anxiety and even deperession. If we step back and listen to our bodies, they are pretty good at letting us know that we need something to help. When I feel things like: My chest tightenMy stomach being uneasyMy breath getting rapid All these things let me know that I need to get out and get moving. Benefits of Exercise Habits There are so many benefits to exercise, many have nothing to do with how you look! Here are some that both Jenny and I have felt first hand: Overall feeling betterLower frustration levelsGrounds you overallHelps you feel centered and focus on the tasks you need to doGive endorphins which help in life and businessContributes to overall happinessDecision making are better, they don't come a place of emotion Physical changes can also be seen. While these should not be the focus, they can help motivate you. Jenny had plenty of muscle memory from her past, so the first thing she started seeing was definition in her shoulders. I personally don't change much in size,

Jenny married Robin on March 17, 2018. Listen as Jenny tells Christy & Michelle all about it. From their fun & crazy first date to a $100K wedding that they loved so much and do not regret a penny spent. Jenny Block began her career in words teaching college English in Virginia. Before too long, she found herself writing articles and books about everything from art to rock climbing to finding love. After that came radio and television appearances, as well as speaking engagements at universities, at museums, and even on cruise ships. She has traveled the world and has had the pleasure of meeting and working with all kinds of people from all kinds of places doing all kinds of things. That's when she discovered her magic-bringing out That Unicorn in all of us. Now, Jenny spends her time and her words living her truth and sharing her shine on a lake in Nowhere, Texas with her wife Robin and her two dogs: Chihuahua-terrier Walter and Chihuahua-Dachshund Aurora. Big Takeaways * Having a designer was one of Jenny's favorite choices. It helped with tie breaking and helping pull the elements together to make a beautiful wedding. * There are brokers that re-sell gowns that rich folks buy and never pick up. Jenny was able to get a $15,000 dress for $4,000. yourdreamdress.com is where she purchased! * Jenny's biggest regret was not getting a videographer. She put all her focus on a photographer and ultimately, the cost stopped her from getting the videographer. * Because of the nature of a lesbian wedding, there was more focus on Jenny wearing the gown. This made Robin feel less important on that day. It can be crucial to make sure there is equity focused on the couple. Equal pictures of both people, etc. * Do less than what you can afford. Think about what is the most important parts of the day, and recognize which parts don't matter at all. For Jenny, she just wanted to be able to wear a beautiful gown, she didn't really care where the wedding happening. Jenny Fenig is the creator of the Get Gutsy movement, is a coach to spiritual women on a mission. Jenny’s mission is simple: help you touch more lives with your message and cash in on your calling.® After a successful (and stressful!) corporate career managing public relations campaigns for the biggest brands in the world and then producing premium business conferences, she realized she was far too much of a rebel to be employed by someone else. Freedom is her top value. After a successful corporate career in New York City, Jenny quit her 6-figure job to do what she was put on this planet to do: coach gutsy leaders to rise to their next level.  She does this by empowering you to tune in, do less + make more. The death of her 12-year-old sister Julie taught her not to stress about stuff that doesn’t matter. Surviving her death as a 16-year-old high school girl made her who she is today. In this episode, we talk about how to connect with nature and why it’s important, how to do more in less time, how death can be a catalyst to create more meaning and so much more. Listen up with an open heart and mind. It appears that missions have been a big part of your life. What would you say your mission is now? Jenny’s mission is to remind women that they are magic makers and to reclaim the word “magic”. Magic is working with nature and the seasons to create something beautiful and sustainable and that helps make the world better. We do that so gloriously. We are designed that way. It’s such a trip! When we rely on technology exclusively to fill us, then it’s really easy to disconnect from what’s really going on. So her mission is to remind women that they have wonderful gifts, talents and creations inside of them to bring forth and bring language and context to. They can put them into a very intelligent container, price them, sell them, and receive abundance for doing so… what a wonderful thing, that we can do this from home and on our own schedule! We have the tools to be able to create this magic and create whatever life we want. Would you say that magic has an element of creation? Absolutely. What if we’re not feeling the magic? Be you. Know that when it’s time, transformation is beautiful. The butterfly doesn’t start out as a butterfly, it starts out as a caterpillar. The caterpillar just rocks the caterpillar life and when it’s time, boom! The cocoon starts being created, but then the cocoon has to get really tight and that’s also uncomfortable. These transitions are very uncomfortable and sometimes we want to rush through them, but nature never rushes. So can we get our cues from nature and say when the time is really right? Can we trust the timetable and know that it’s working and that we’re on the right path? We’re all trained for instant gratification. We need all these conveniences and we think that can be applied to everything, but it’s just not the way that it works. We have to come to a place where we are so deeply connected to our intuition, our own inner knowing, that we know it’s working and it’s working because we are still showing up and doing the work. Making it easier doesn’t mean you’re checked out and not doing the stuff that you know you need to. Children are often more connected to magic and at some point, it seems we get cut off. When did you reconnect with magic? Space camp was a reconnection to the magic and Jenny would do things where she felt like she was in her genius. Being around people who are like her. Jenny moved to NYC after graduating and worked for a public relations agency. That’s what she thought she was meant to do. She was disconnected, she wasn’t treating her body well, she was drinking too much, and she realized it wasn’t working for her anymore. Jenny realized she was running from her feelings, the grief from when her sister died of cancer in high school, and never really stopped to process that because she didn’t really know how. “Whatever I choose to do, I’m good at it,” she says. That’s her story and it works until it doesn’t, then you have your feelings to deal with. She came face to face with that voice within and that’s when she rediscovered her magic because that’s when she chose to trust that voice instead of pushing it away. She broke down into tears at work and asked for the support she needed. She took a little time off work which was an act of reclaiming herself and being available for herself. Was there a moment when you lost your sister that you felt like you lost faith or magic? She lost her faith in God when that happened. It wasn’t a huge part of her life and she didn’t have a strong upbringing in a religious context but she had a sense of God and her sister was a huge believer. Jenny saw her sister’s peacefulness around her death and towards the end, she saw her ability to find her way. Jenny found a diary of her sister’s that mentioned the moment she found God and Jenny wondered how. Having three loved ones die in a short amount of time in her teenage years, especially her sister, made her sad, pissed, and confused. She wanted answers. She still felt them but couldn’t see them and because she was just thrown into the depths of it, she learned what she knows now and that the connection to source energy never dies. The classic religious environment never did anything for Jenny. She found her way on her own and she has yoga to thank for that. Through that practice, she found peace and the ability to not need alcohol or drugs to experience a feeling. She wanted to feel that through healthy habits. How has your experience with death helped you to live a more meaningful and fulfilled life? It’s been everything! Jenny watched her 16-year-old sister take her last breath and learned that time waits for no one and you don’t know what your last day is going to be on this planet. We must not just squander our time, complain, and bitch about getting older, we have to be better stewards of our time and stop wasting it on things that don’t matter to us anyway. On a spiritually cosmic level, she knows that her sister was here for the time that she was because that was her journey and for Jenny, what a wonderful teacher she’s been. Her sister helps her get out and share this message. Her sister is championing it til the end. Jenny has a really distinct understanding of time, uses it really well, and can teach it to you too! How do you think losing your sister has impacted you as a mother? Jenny is able to tune into what this is really about and this gift that we’re given as a parent to guide these beings along as they guide us along. Let’s be real, we probably learn more from our kids as they learn from us! It goes by quickly and they’re absorbing it all. She’s not saying she doesn’t have moments of fear of something happening to them but she doesn’t entertain long periods of time in that realm of fear. Jenny tries to think of the big picture. So much suffering comes when we attach to a form or arrangement being the way it’s always been. When the time came around for her son to pursue homeschooling, she felt like it was a gift from her sister. She hears the voice of her sister just telling her to enjoy it and not to get too into her head. With the state of the world right now, people can use the fear of death to not do something. When there’s so much fear around getting sick and ultimately dying, how do you recommend that people don’t let the fears stops them from living, but rather help them have more agency over their time and their life and create more magic in their life? Every day, be intentional about the design of the day. How do you want to experience today? Today is going to be _________.  Call it in! Call in the value of the day. So much of the time it’s about adapting and then not getting attached to form. That’s where the suffering comes from. It’s a slippery slope. We can show up for what’s up and have some sort of spiritual practice that where you can come back to your center. This is the time to get it! You just may not have found it yet, but it’s there. For Jenny, the “there” has been through her body. We have a partnership with our bodies and they deserve to be nourished, loved, adored, honored, and listened to. All is well. You’re a mom. You’re homeschooling. You have three kids. We’re moving along with this theme of time and it influences so much of how we live. What would you suggest are some key ways to talk about time? There’s always enough time. I have plenty of time. I always get it done. You have to know your own defaults. Hers is anxiety and instead of going to the place of not having enough time to get things done, she goes to the place of recognizing how lucky she is to have all these projects to work on; that she gets to help her son with this particular assignment.   If you’re alive, you have time. It’s a partner to you. We’re here, we’re alive, we have time. Are you harnessing your time intelligently or have you surrendered into the squandering of time? Notice your tendencies when you feel overwhelmed. Are you scrolling on social media? Are you comparing and despairing? Are you reading every news article and going down rabbit holes? Prioritize what needs to get done today. Do it now, don’t wait til later. Once you do, you’ll start seeing things just get done! What’s an action step that you would offer the listeners to take? Get to know the moon. Really get to know her, she has your back. The moon is in us! Whether you’re in your bleeding years or not, we have the same cycle as the moon, which is pretty epic. Know that our own rhythmic, energetic cycle and hers are connected. You should know when the new moon, first quarter moon, full moon, and third quarter moon are. It’s usually in the printed calendars! All of her launches and projects work with this code and the season, but at least know it for yourself, you don’t necessarily need to build it into your business. You’ll know yourself more deeply and understand why at the new moon, you don’t really want to hang out with your family! What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? In episode 152, Kestrel welcomes Jenny Silbert, the founder of Rewilder, to the show. An LA-based brand, Rewilder is focused on the following tenants: salvage materials, local production, zero waste, good design, ethical production and high quality. “I have always been interested in upcycling, like from the time I was a kid it was something that I would do. My parents would be driving and I would be like ‘stop the car! I need to pick up that chair or I need to pick up that table that was on the side of the street.’ ” -Jenny Silbert, Founder of Rewilder In this week’s show, Jenny shares more on her journey into sustainable fashion, from originally starting in architecture. For several years, Jenny’s architectural career was focused on materials development and architectural problem solving. Through her work, she discovered how much industrial trash was building up in, for instance, the automotive and beer industries. This helped spark her and her cofounder’s concept to utilize this waste — beautiful, durable, unique material — and repurpose it into bag designs. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: “The unique thing about fashion is that is really touches everybody.” “We’re in this interesting time where it’s very clear that we have a gigantic trash problem and it impacts everyone on the earth but the action - like changing people’s behaviors is still really really difficult.” For Jenny, using pre-consumer industrial waste has proven the most efficient for Rewilder. Because often, when something is already constructed, it’s so durable that the deconstruction and reconstruction makes it cost-prohibitive to utilize. Rewilder will be launching an entirely zero waste bag in the coming months.

Today we’re digging into the Tech Stack Framework. I developed this framework as part of my Virtual CTO services – we’ll get into those more later in this episode. In 2010, when I first started out building WordPress websites for clients, I knew I wanted to put together a website that would support their business. Trouble was, I was also just starting out and didn’t have a deep understanding of the online infrastructure required to support their businesses. This left me feeling quite accomplished with the website I delivered but anxious that I hadn’t met the actual needs that we were trying to fill. So, I went on and dug into my intuition to make sure I firmly understood what else is needed online to truly support a business. And I dabbled – I dabbled in Facebook Ads. I dabbled in copywriting. I dabbled in email marketing. I dabbled in landing pages and funnels and membership site and online courses. As I dabbled, I took copious notes (mostly in my head) as to what was a fad, what had serious potential and what was going to stand the test of time. I have easily been in 50 or more different software services for myself and for clients. These run from tools for hosting your business website and email marketing to content creation, planning, scheduling and delivery tools. And from calendaring, scheduling and event tools to shopping carts and online accounting software. And because many software founders care deeply about the impact that their product has for their clients, we have tons of great tools – something for everyone! I have my preferences, for sure, but my philosophy is that my role is to meet you where you’re at to create a supportive foundation for your business goals. If something is working, we don’t need to change it for change sake alone. But if something is causing headaches, not providing enough value or otherwise impeding business growth, then it’s time to circle back on that tool or system and determine how to correct course. This brings us to the tech stack. This is a term I’ve adopted to encompass all the online systems and tools that a business uses to operate. It includes client-facing systems, back-office systems, content creation systems, marketing systems and lead-generation systems. I love a good tech stack… but without a framework a tech stack is only as good as the individual components – the framework addresses the critical thinking piece called “How does this all fit together and allow tech to support your business goals.” The Tech Stack Framework is a process by which we can make the most of the systems and tools in your business. Here is the framework: The framework is a pyramid. The pyramid sits on a pedestal which represent the different audiences that interact with your business. These audiences are those internal to your business, your clients and the public. Our audiences are people not tech tools, which is why they are not part of the pyramid. But they are a necessary entity to the checks and balances of the systems and tools we use in our businesses. The base on the pyramid is called Base Tools. Base tools include those primary functions that allow us to showcase what we do, sell our products and services and deliver them to our customers and clients. The layer on our pyramid is Support Tools. It contains the systems and tools that integrate with the base tools to allow them to work together, do more and drive your business towards your goals. At this level, we focus on tools and systems that allow us to create, manage and track. The next layer contains our Growth Tools. These are the tools that help us to have systems around storage, visibility and learning. Above this layer is a thin layer called Document. Our document layer is directly beneath the capstone because without it the tools in the Base, Support and Growth layers do not fully describe the landscape upon which business goals are realized. And, this means that the pinnacle of the pyramid is your business goals! Without a well-documented, strong foundation it is going to be far more difficult to fully integrate online business initiatives. Let’s take an example of the framework in action. This is a sample client, let’s call her Jenny, who delivers online training. She is a hybrid of four of my clients from the past year. First, we identify the stakeholders we are going to evaluate our tools for. For Jenny it’s her blog readers, newsletter subscribers, social media followers, her students and herself. Her base tools consist of Instagram, Facebook, Stripe, Thinkific, WordPress and ActiveCampaign. Once we identify Jenny’s tools, we need to elaborate to be clear exactly how that tool is being used. Instagram and Facebook are where Jenny shows up to the public, along with her ActiveCampaign emails and WordPress website which contains her blog. She interacts with her students on Facebook, via ActiveCampaign and provides content inside Thinkific. Stripe is her payment processor and integrates with Thinkific. Thinkific also integrates with ActiveCampaign so that her student list on the email system matches her student list on Thinkific. Often there are overlapping uses of tools and within your tech stack blueprint, and this is perfect. It reduces the number of tools in use. In fact, you can reduce your tools by finding tools that overlap in functionality which is often done at every layer of the pyramid. Now for WordPress we list out other details such as where it’s hosted, where the domain is registered, what theme we’re using, what plugins we’re using and how the WordPress website interconnects with the other base tools. I believe that it’s important to get as granular as possible during the early phases of working with the framework, it’ll make the process of adding new systems or tools to your tech stack and tech stack blueprint far easier! And, knowing how the systems and tools connect, will make it far easier for someone else to work in your business and support your goals and initiatives. Let me ask you -- If you were to hire someone tomorrow, would you know how to get them on board with your tech stack? If not, let’s have a tech strategy session to get you started! As always, strategy sessions are available at https://techofbusiness.com/strategy-session/ OK… with these components alone, we’ve got a business! Jenny is now able to let people know she has online courses, give people a way to purchase and then access the courses. But that’s not enough to create a thriving business, so let’s move up to the next layer of the framework. The tools on the support layer do not add functionality unto themselves, they add support to the tools in the base layer. For Jenny we have a significant amount of content creation so the tools she uses are Camtasia, Canva and Google Docs. These tools clearly support the tools that provide value to the stakeholders. Also within the support layer we add our project management tool: Trello, password manager: LastPass and QuickBooks for accounting. As we work through each layer of the Tech Stack Framework highlighting the connection between tools on adjacent layers will take your tech stack diagram from a list of tools to a usable and living blueprint. Moving to the growth layer, we are exposing the tools that support creation, management and tracking, which as we’ve already mentioned support our base tools that allow us to sell, deliver and showcase our products and services. The growth layer is the most cluttered ring and often where more and more tools are plugged in as a business grows. For Jenny’s business our primary growth tool is creating a feedback loop, so we have Typeform on this layer. We also list Google Drive on this layer as it is her central cloud storage location. Go back to episode 11 https://techofbusiness.com/011/ for a rundown of cloud storage options. Just as we did for the tools at each of the other layers, listing out the name of the tool is not going to make it very usable. For Typeform we list out how it connects to Google Drive and ActiveCampaign. And for Google Drive we list out the file structure and hierarchy. We take the time to describe how these tools are used to support the elements on the layer below. This is what makes our tech stack blueprint a working document. Jenny also has Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics and Facebook Pixel on this layer. These are going to allow her to expand her reach, understand her traffic and so much more. One of the keys to the Tech Stack Framework and blueprint is that it positions you to think toward your goals and initiatives. I encourage you to link your tools together as closely as possible, either using integrated tools within the software or using Zapier. It’s incredible the automations that we can build… but that conversation is for another day, and another episode… When we work together, with me as your virtual CTO, we will work through the Tech Stack Framework several times. We may work through it solely for your internal stakeholders or for your paying stakeholders. We may skip some of the forward-thinking steps. We may even work through it as a checks and balance for a new project or initiative. The idea being that our framework helps to make sure that the tech stack blueprint accurately reflects the tech we are using in our businesses. And each subsequent iteration helps the blueprint become more fully developed. Now, I didn’t leave out the last layer of the pyramid – I just saved documentation for last! The documentation layer is like the icing on a cake – it really completes the tech stack visual. Documentation consists of the plain language version of the tools and how they connect as well as a changelog. The changelog is what gets updated when anything is added, changed or removed in the tech stack. Even when a new system or tool is being tested, I believe that it needs to go onto the blueprint – you may just fall in love with the tool and we don’t want to forget to document it! I recommend having a directory in your primary cloud storage location and call it __Documentation__ with two underlines on either side. This will make sure it’s the first folder in view when viewing alphabetically. There are several ways that we can work together to create your tech stack blueprint and beyond. As I mentioned in the intro, the Tech Stack Framework is the first step when bringing me into your business as your Virtual CTO. The Tech Stack Framework can also be worked through in an intensive VIP day. VIP days are available both in person and virtually. All packages are listed on https://techofbusiness.com/work-with-me/ and it would be my absolute pleasure to jump on a quick call with you to determine the best package for you and your business goals. No matter your current online footprint, adopting the Tech Stack Framework will help you create a strong foundation. As I was discussing tech stacks with business owners just like you, the most common fear that came up was “I just don’t know what I don’t know” followed quickly by “I’m worried that I’m going to break something.” Let’s nip that in the bud and give you the freedom to feel confident that your tech is supporting your business. It’s all about ease and flow! Thank you so much for hanging out with me on the Tech of Business podcast today. This month's episode of Translator Tea Time is here! Manga Translators Amanda Haley and Jenny McKeon gather around over the internet to talk about what they've been up to and the very first manga they've ever read. The first manga they chose may reflect the era in which they were born...or bad company practices! 0:50: Jenny and Amanda get into what they've been up to. Amanda reveals she's translating Hiromu Arakawa's Silver Spoon, which is all about a dude who fails his high school exam and to avoid his father, goes far away...to a farming school. That should end well. You can find out how that goes by watching the anime on Crunchyroll, or waiting for the manga to arrive in February. 5:20: Amanda also reveals something scandalous about Naruto because she happens to be working on a series for Viz. 8:50: Jenny decided to take Justin's suggestion and start off a discussion on the first manga they ever read. For Jenny it involves a series with long spiky hair (very vague). It also is a Shonen Jump title (maybe not so vague). 15:19: While talking, Jenny and Amanda talk about how do you translate tsukkomi for a manga. 18:25: Around this moment the two manga translators explain why the phrase "It can't be helped" can be fine, but it's not preferred and is kinda boring to say. 21:05: Jenny shares the answer to a question she received at an event about translating the same creator for a long time. 23:55: Amanda begins explaining why it's been intimidating to be translating Silver Spoon and The Heroic Legend of Arslan. This leads to Jenny chatting about an almost similar situation with a new series by a familiar author. 28:29: Jenny finally realized after all the rambling that Amanda never revealed the first manga she ever read. After hearing her explanation, you'll have to let us know if she should've kept it to herself.

Jenny Blake, our guest on today’s podcast, figured out how to use her information when she was in a place that you may be able to relate to: she was stuck...trying to figure out what was next in her career. She’d left college to work at a startup, then left the startup to work at Google, and had just left a job at Google to go out on her own as an author. She had become the girl that was known for leaving things. She wondered who she was, how she could have an impact, and what she could build through work that was meaningful. She was struggling to make a breakthrough from all of her career analysis, and she felt completely stuck. For Jenny, as someone scanning the horizon for her next career possibilities, she realized that all she needed to do was ground herself in her strengths and take a look at what was already working for her.
