In her latest book, We the People, the historian, New Yorker staff writer, and Harvard University professor Jill Lepore turns her attention to the history of the U.S. Constitution. Specifically, she focuses on all the ways our government's foundational text has changed throughout its nearly 250 year history. Lepore calls Article V, which lays out the Constitution's amendment mechanism, by far its most “radical innovation.” But she says the Constitution has become unamendable in the modern era — it hasn't been meaningfully updated in more than a half-century, corroding our politics and government. Kara and Jill break down why the Framers included a way to make changes to the Constitution, how we're still grappling with Article V's bad compromises, and why the now dominant judicial philosophy of originalism contradicts the Framers' intent. Lepore also digs into whether the Constitution can withstand PresidentTrump's constant attacks. Questions? Comments? PREVIEW: KING CHARLES.: Colleague Gregory Copley comments on the challenge for the King to steady the brittle Starmer government and at the same time to reassure the public watching the doubts in leadership. More. 1901 OLD HOUSE Comment on Excerpt from "P-COPLEY-KING-9-2.mp3": This segment introduces a discussion about the upcoming state visit of Donald Trump hosted by the King and Queen of England, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The conversation highlights significant turmoil within the London government, citing unresolved issues such as migration, unfulfilled promises by the Labour Party, an unsettled budget, and a dispute in Downing Street between the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer. A key question posed is whether the King can intervene to help calm the situation, similar to his earlier role in quelling riots related to migration. However, the effectiveness of his intervention in the current climate remains unclear, with Gregory Copley noting the King must be careful not to take sides. Comment on Excerpt from "P-COPLEY-KING-9-2.mp3": This excerpt delves into the King's influence and the delicate balance he must maintain to avoid appearing political, especially concerning "visceral street causes" related to people's economic well-being. While the King can exert pressure on Prime Minister Starmer, Starmer is described as "tonedeaf," failing to recognize help. Notably, the King previously "bailed out" the Labour administration by calming massive street riots and is expected to do so again. However, there's a limit to how much people can be appeased when continually ignored or subjected to adverse social and economic conditions. The segment also suggests a potential "revolt" and leadership change within the Labour Party at some point.
If you think AI is all about saving time and cutting corners, think again. In this conversation with futurist Bob Johansen, we explore how AI can be used as a thinking partner - to help you generate ideas, build clarity, and make better decisions in a chaotic, unpredictable world. Bob argues that the real power of AI lies in augmented intelligence, not artificial intelligence. Bob Johansen is a distinguished fellow with the Institute for the Future in Silicon Valley. For more than 50 years, Bob has helped organisations around the world prepare for and shape the future. He has written 15 books and his latest one Navigating the Age of Chaos, is out on October 28. He walks us through: - The key skill that will future-proof your career - How to use AI to get unstuck and think more creatively - Why clarity beats certainty in a BANI world (Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible) - The leadership traits needed to thrive in the AI-first decade Whether you’re excited about AI or sceptical, this episode will shift your mindset and give you a roadmap for working with AI, not against it. What happens when the work we do no longer serves our families—but separates them? In this thought-provoking and deeply resonant episode, Ginny Yurich sits down with Rory Groves, author of Durable Trades and The Family Economy, to uncover why modern life feels so unstable—and what we can do about it. From brittle supply chains to generational fragmentation, Rory exposes how the very systems we were told to rely on are now cracking under pressure. But there is another way. One that's slower, older, and surprisingly resilient: the family economy. Whether you're a parent, homeschooler, or simply someone who senses something is off, this conversation will reframe how you think about work, legacy, education, and security. The latest questions about his support from China and his corporate tax dodging have had Mark Carney stumbling and snapping at reporters, even suspending his campaign to seek refuge in the image-friendly prime minister's office. But the bigger question is whether he can avoid fumbling his front-runner status in the last two weeks of the campaign, as Brian discusses in our weekly election panel with Tasha Kheiriddin and Stuart Thomson from Postmedia's Political Hack newsletter. They also consider whether Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's campaign will finally get the boost it needs with the coming leaders' debates after weeks of struggling against U.S. President Donald Trump's intrusions and irksome infighting conservative infighting. As heart-warming ends to a series go, they don't get much more heart-warming than this episode.Hypo Hounds is a diabetic alert assistance charity, helping children with type 1 diabetes by training assistance dogs to not only detect hypos, fetch testing kits or even bring a bottle of Lucozade, but helping children to live with more independence and freedom, and families to communicate better and feel less burdened by the challenges of type 1 diabetes. The woman behind Hypo Hounds is today's guest, Jane Pearman. Jane and her husband trained their first hypo dog, Scooby, to help their daughter Sophie after she was diagnosed with brittle type 1 diabetes as well as other major health complications at the age of 9. At the time Jane was checking Sophie's blood sugars every hour through the night, feeling understandably frightened and exhausted. They didn't know it at the time, but Scooby would inspire the journey to founding Hypo Hounds, which has now trained 54 dogs to date, reducing hospital admissions and giving children and their families much-needed independence and relief from the burden of living with diabetes. Thanks to the help of Scooby and her second Hypo Hound Dori, Sophie, now 22, lives independently and remains an incredible spokesperson for the charity. Having a product does not mean it's going to work well. Having a product and having the experience to use it properly, that's the determining factor. - Trace Blackmore Dive into one of Trace Blackmore's favorite formats: the "Pinks and Blues" episode! In this special installment, Trace tackles real-world questions from water treatment professionals like you, offering clear, practical solutions rooted in chemistry, strategy, and years of experience. From mastering serial dilutions to making the most of leftover competitor products, this episode is all about equipping you with the tools to excel in your field. Managing Leftover Competitor Products in Accounts Trace discusses the common challenge of customers asking water treatment professionals to use leftover chemicals they've already paid for. He highlights the risks of taking these products back to your facility, including potential costly disposal fees, and provides practical advice on how to manage and utilize these products effectively on-site. Serial Dilution: Explanation and Equation Trace introduces the dilution formula C1 × V1 = C2 × V2, a fundamental equation for performing accurate dilutions. He provides a detailed, step-by-step guide to creating dilutions in both lab and field settings, enabling water treatment professionals to test and effectively utilize mystery products left behind by competitors. Importance of Deionized (DI) Water in Test Kits Trace explains the critical role of DI water in performing accurate dilutions and removing interferences during tests. He emphasizes the necessity of always carrying sufficient DI water in the field for tasks like dilutions, triple rinsing equipment, and managing high-concentration samples. Ensuring DI water availability is key to maintaining clean and reliable testing processes. Testing Mystery Products Trace recommends testing mystery products for key components such as phosphate (total, organic, and inorganic) and Azol levels to determine their composition. Use the product's safety data sheet (SDS) or similar documentation to identify expected ranges and compare test results. These insights help calculate appropriate dosages and ensure effective usage of leftover products. Benefits of Proper Product Management Using leftover chemicals on-site provides several key advantages: Cost Savings: Eliminates expensive disposal fees for unused products. Customer Satisfaction: Reduces customer expenses by utilizing materials they've already paid for. Sustainability: Promotes greener practices by minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency. Professional Growth: Savings from proper management can support funding for training, certifications, and industry conferences, contributing to career development opportunities. Moran & Michael Lennington Drop by Drop with James In today's episode, I have a challenge for you. The challenge is…check your safety equipment. Seriously, check the condition as well as any expiration dates. I personally was shocked to find out that hard hats have an expiration date on them, but they do. It does make sense, though, because plastic can get brittle over time, especially sitting in a hot vehicle. Brittle plastic probably won't protect your noggin as well as it should. Are your safety glasses all scratched up or dirty? Do they obstruct your view? Do you wear your earplugs more than once, and do they need to be replaced? How about your steel-toed shoes, face shields, aprons, gloves, and other safety equipment? Will they protect you when you need them to? Take this challenge as your excuse to inspect them all and replace them as needed. Your family, friends, colleagues, Trace, and I all want you to be safe as you practice the noble profession of industrial water treatment! Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP!
