Don't bury it. Don't live under the victim label. When we can get to the point where we can thank the people who have hurt us, we've taken our power back.LINKS:- More on Rhonda can be found at www.rhonda.org.- Her book: 30 Days To Love available now!- If you've survived hard things, this is for you Successful Survivors Foundation- If you want to change the world, start here Love Is Action Community InitiativeTake our FREE Business Assessment:SpiritCenteredBusiness.com- Join the Activation Ekklesia for Business: http://SpiritCenteredBusiness.com/activation-Spiritual Business Coaching: https://SpiritCenteredBusiness.com/coaching- Join the SCB Tribe: http://facebook.com/groups/scbtribeBe sure to answer the membership questions so we know you're legit! ;-)Copyright 2023 - Bralynn Newby Int'l. No one wants to re-live the most painful experiences of their life, but before you click this off, consider that we learn survival skills by surviving--not out of a book or in a classroom. We acquire powerful, highly valuable character traits by going through hard things. In this episode, let's look at the character traits that were developed in you as a result of what you've been through. These character traits are the things that can be the rungs on the ladder of your successful life. It's not easy to revisit hard times, but remember that in doing it now, you have the perspective of a more mature person. You can revisit without having to relive it. Approach this like you would if someone else was telling you the story as if it were theirs, or think of yourself as an investigative reporter just gathering the facts. Then think of the ways that you were changed by what happened. We have a tendency to think that we were wounded. Permanently. And we may have been wounded, for a time. But after the wounds heal, we find that we're strong, resilient survivors. We know things because we've lived through them--not because we went to a classroom or read a book. We are EXPERTS in whatever experiences we've survived. To discover the character traits of successful survivors that have been developed in you, go to Findyourpurposenow.org and download the Successful Survivor Character Trait Checklist. A quick internet search of character traits will reveal many more, but these are the most common traits of survivors who have used their character traits to create personal and professional success. In our hectic lives that run at the speed of electronics, it's important to stop from time to time and take an honest evaluation of our lives to make sure that we're on the right track towards fulfillment of our purpose. Think of it like stopping on a road trip to take a look at your GPS to see how close or far away you are from the things you wanted to do and the landmarks you wanted to see along the way. We'd all be disappointed to learn that we were just minutes away from the thing we most wanted to experience, but unknowingly drove right passed it. In this episode, Rhonda Sciortino talks about how to easily take stock of the things that are important to you. She also shares a story of advice that Warren Buffet (allegedly) gave to his private pilot--personal advice from one of the wealthiest men in the world. Do you ever feel like you're going backwards, away from your purpose? Or that you're going in circles instead of making progress towards your purpose? We all want our lives to be one straight line from where we are today to living the life of meaning and fulfillment, but the path towards fulfillment of our purpose is often a winding road filled with switchbacks and turns that we didn't see coming. It's tempting to veer off the path or to just give up. In today's episode, Rhonda Sciortino shares 7 of the "guardrails" she relies on to keep her on the path towards purpose, meaning, and God's perfect plans. If you, or someone you know, is at a crossroads in life, going through a painful breakup, have lost a loved one, lost a job, are dealing with a life threatening diagnosis, or any of the other things that bring us face-to-face with the question of purpose and meaning of our lives, we hope you'll consider attending an upcoming FIND YOUR PURPOSE Christian Women's Retreat. In these retreats, we take 2 1/2 days to lead you on a journey of self-discovery. You come away with a confident understanding of your authentic identity, your natural talents, strengths, personality and character traits--all the things that make you uniquely awesome. Confident people really stand out to us because many of us are insecure about our looks, the way we dress, the way we sound, our social status, our jobs, the money in our account, and just about any other aspect of our lives. We can all be confident, comfortable in our own skin, and relaxed and at ease with our lives. This is the result of living our purpose because when we are living the life we were built to live, we know that we're enough. In fact, we know that we're awesome at being the most authentic version of ourselves possible. In this episode, certified life coach, Jenny Christiansen, and successful survivor of childhood abandonment and abuse, Rhonda Sciortino, talk about the process of going from "not enough" to that peaceful, easy feeling of living in your purpose. Please subscribe and share this with someone who doesn't think they're enough. For info on FIND YOUR PURPOSE retreats and on co-host, Rhonda Sciortino, go to www.rhonda.org/events. Rhonda Sciortino is a survivor, successful business woman, author, speaker, and founder of the Successful Survivors Foundation. Rhonda joins the 1 Girl Revolution Podcast this week to share her inspiring life story and how she turned her survivor story into a story of success and purpose - and now how she's helping other survivors find their purpose. Rhonda was abandoned as a very young child and became a ward of the court until she emancipated at the age of 16. Except for a brief time with a great foster family, her first 16 years were spent with her abusive grandparents – her grandfather was mentally ill and her grandmother was an alcoholic and drug-addicted. At 15 years old, Rhonda decided to seek emancipation. One of the prerequisites was that Rhonda had to have a job, so she went to work for the first person who would hire her–an insurance agent. Rhonda worked hard and was finally emancipated at the age of 17 and that same year, she became California's youngest licensed insurance agent. Rhonda has had an incredibly successful career in insurance and throughout her career, she has dedicated her life to supporting people and organizations that protect children. In 2008, Rhonda left her career to serve as the chairperson of Successful Survivors Foundation, a non-profit organization she founded to help survivors of trauma find purpose, meaning, and happiness, what she calls, "your real success." This episode of the podcast is so inspiring. In this episode, you'll hear: Rhonda's life story, including being abandoned as a baby and surviving abuse; How she fought to be emancipated at a young age and then found success; About her successful career in insurance and how she went from survival to having a multi-million dollar career; The story of why she decided to start Successful Survivors Foundation and how she's now helping other survivors find their purpose and success; And so much more. What would happen if we quit attacking people who have opinions or beliefs or values that are different from ours? What would happen if we simply stopped arguing? How much more peaceful would the world be if we acted like we actually care more about people than about the way they vote or the color of their skin?? Do you struggle to keep peace in your home? Are you trying to make it work in a blended family? If you're a step-parent, or a foster, adoptive, or relative caregiver for kids that you didn't bring into the world, you're going to want to hear this. Debbie Bailey Ausburn was a social worker (and single) when she decided to become a foster parent to teenagers. Over time, Debbie went back to school and became a lawyer. She was a prosecutor of crimes against children before she moved into defending the good people and organizations that care for children who have been traumatized. Her experience in all those roles prepared her for marrying a man who had 5 children. Debbie has created a blended family, and says, "Being someone's Plan B can be pretty wonderful." Look for Debbie's book, to be released later this year, Healing Blended Families. For more on Debbie, go to www.debbieausburn.com. This is where it gets fun! Step 4 is where we learn to articulate the good things about ourselves that we've extracted from our painful situations. No longer do we lower our gaze and shamefully admit what we've gone through. We don't have to talk about what we've been through at all. But what we do talk about are the good character traits, learned abilities, and perspective that we acquired as we went through adversity. When we can look someone in the eyes, and unashamedly explain who we are and what we're capable of doing that is of value in the world, we are the ones who get hired, who get the business loan, the patent, the partnership, or the relationships. I hate this part, but there's no way around it. If you don't give yourself permission to properly grieve what you've lost, what you hoped for, and the fantasies you had about it that were never going to be, your grief will show up in your attitudes, emotions, and your physical health. The key is to grieve for a time and then to move on so that you don't get stuck forever in grief. If you get stuck, you lose the good future that is your destiny. Unadoptable. A term that became a part of her identity at the age of seven. She said, “My mother asked her neighbor to babysit while she went shopping, but she did not go shopping. Her clothes were packed, her car was loaded and she moved out of state… She never came back.” A situation that made Rhonda Sciortino understand early on the concepts of abandonment and rejection. A situation that left her no other option, but to live her with maternal grandparents, a mentally ill grandfather, and an alcoholic grandmother. She said, “We lived in a little shack, about the size of a two-car garage… It didn't have working plumbing… No heat or air conditioning… Lots of times we went without food… Lots of times we had no electricity… Pretty rough upbringing.” She continued by saying, “I was abused… Physically… Emotionally…” A type of upbringing that most, if not all of us, would want to forget as fast as possible. But, Rhonda is different from most people, as she did not have the luxury of forgetting. An upbringing that took her on a journey from being a victim to becoming a survivor, and ultimately turning into an advocate. An advocate for those who've suffered abuse, abandonment, poverty, filth, and hunger. “My success is helping other people get theirs.” EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: On Hardship: Identify the takeaway to prevent future hardships On Avoiding Abuse: Learn to redirect the conversation On Relationships: Form quality relationships with healthy people On Communication: Give people the benefit of the doubt
Rhonda Sciortino was abandoned at the age of six months, and became a ward of the court until she emancipated at 16. Except for a brief time with a wonderful foster family, those first 16 years were spent in the custody of a mentally ill man and alcoholic woman–her grandparents. When Rhonda was eight years old, the little shack where she lived was destroyed by fire. They had no insurance, and for months they were homeless. Rhonda vividly recalls wearing the same filthy sundress and flimsy dimestore flipflops to school day after day for months after that fire. At age 15 Rhonda decided to seek emancipation. One of the prerequisites was that Rhonda have a job, so she went to work for the first person who would hire her–an insurance agent. When her employer explained the concept of insurance, Rhonda was flabbergasted. “You mean someone would have paid for our house to be rebuilt AND given us money for clothes and a place to sleep?” Rhonda learned everything she could about insurance. Despite being denied again and again, Rhonda repeatedly petitioned the Insurance Commissioner to allow her to sit for the insurance agent exam even though she wasn’t yet 18. An exception was finally granted, and Rhonda became California’s youngest licensed insurance agent at 17. At the age of 27, Rhonda’s passion for good child welfare providers and appropriate insurance intersected. She committed herself to protecting people and organizations that protect children. She had personally experienced excellent foster care during her short time with a foster family, and she knew the shame of homelessness as a result of inadequate insurance. Rhonda quit her job and started her own retail insurance organization. A few years later, she opened a national brokerage which helped insurance brokers all over the US protect the child welfare organizations in their areas. In 2008, Rhonda sold Child Welfare Insurance Services to Markel Insurance Company. She now serves as their National Child Welfare Specialist, helping child welfare organizations all over the US to manage the risks and realities of caring for kids. Rhonda is happily married to Nick Sciortino. They live in Newport Beach, CA near their daughter, son-in-law, and two grandsons who are the joys of their lives.
