Vanessa Maria is a DJ, Broadcaster at Foundation FM, and a host at Resident Advisor. She's been busy making appearances at Boiler room, Dazed Magazine, Warehouse Project and HÖR in Berlin. Vanessa's work in and around mental health has also not gone unnoticed. As the key presenter at Resident Advisor, she currently hosts a music and mental health-related podcast and documentary series. She has been named as a leader in shaping the future of London's nightlife by The Face Magazine. "It means feeling so othered that you clearly stick out in a certain context. That might be the way you look, your race. In my case, it was being black at university. But in that same context, even though I was so visible - and it was so clear that I was present and there because I stuck out - I was also so hyper-invisible because I was in the minority. My voice was felt so insignificant, and I felt so unimportant and I felt so undervalued in that same context. So it was a weird feeling to navigate, to feel visible and invisible at the exact same time."

You can find her spreading the love for dance music across London, at festivals, internationally, and weekly on her Foundation FM residency. It's Helena Star. The passion and knowledge for the music she owns is as infectious as every selection, as we take a journey through the music that brings her joy; from the relaxing home-listening tracks to the irresistible energy of those more often heard in the early hours; spanning the whole history House and Techno, from the raw genre defining beats, to the fresh tracks of emerging record labels. Scarlett O'Malley brings the energy and enthusiasm of youth combined with a wealth of musical knowledge way beyond her years. Born and raised in West London but now making her mark around Europe, she is a new breed of DJ doing things on her own terms. Her tireless passion for the scene has made her one of online radio's busiest talents. She is well known and respected for interviewing legends and trailblazers with a uniquely down-to-earth but probing style on stations like Foundation FM and Whynow radio and she has a monthly residency with The Vinyl Factory. She also hosts and produces her own Youth Club podcast which merges her passion for music, history and subculture. She runs her own party and mix series The Soul Exchange. "I wanted to head to the later, darker and slightly heavier side of the club with this mix. Think 4am in a sweaty corner of Corsica! I love house music with all my heart, especially early 90s house music and a lot of the tunes in this mix stems from those early sounds, there are acid overtones in a lot of the music and that underground tribal sound. A house mix in its entirety, there are also breaks and a little techno touch with a ton of groovy basslines in tow. Heavier music with soul!" Artist: @scarlett_omalley

This week I'm joined by Frankie Wells, Co-founder of Foundation FM, a women-led station that's rewriting the rules of radio. Launched in November 2018, foundation.fm was created by Frankie and her two friends: Ami Bennet, and Becky Richardson after noticing an increase of people in the broadcasting industry seeking safe spaces to create and share via the airwaves. The station has two goals in place: firstly, they want to position foundation.fm as a platform for the capital's underground music, art and thought. The second, to promote artist development, career mentoring and, above all, create a space that foregrounds the creative efforts of a diverse group of women and LGBTQ* persons. In this episode, Frankie shares with me how she built her career in radio, her challenges with becoming a founder and a team leader and why radio is still relevant despite the boom of podcasting. ---My new book, Side Hustle in Progress: A Practical Guide to Kickstarting Your Business is published by HarperCollins and available to buy online and in all book shops.Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Side-Hustle-Progress-Practical-Kickstarting/dp/0008455007Audible: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Side-Hustle-Progress-Practical-Kickstarting/dp/B08NXTC5ZCWaterstones: https://www.waterstones.com/book/side-hustle-in-progress/elizabeth-ogabi/9780008455002You can find me on social: IG: @Forworkingladies @ElizabethOgabi Twitter: @Fwladies @ElizabethOgabi_You can sign up for my newsletter "The Snippet" here. Paradise Loops is a groove infused mix series aimed to provide a backdrop of balearic, anthemic and nostalgic sounds on those sun-soaked glory days. If you've been keeping your eye on London's clubbing scene since the re-opening, then no doubt you would have seen Scarlett O'Malley's name plastered pretty much everywhere at the moment. The in demand DJ, founder of The Soul Exchange, Radio Station Manager at whynow and resident on Foundation FM has been smashing it lately, and with the clubs in mind, Scarlett has provided a killer mix that's dancefloor centric. It's a bit of a different vibe to the usual, but my god we're so here for it. "This mix is pure house heaven and a real reflection on what tunes I have been feeling since the clubs have been reopened. Real house stompers, of course with some disco melodies and big soul vocal influences with two of my favourite artists ever Whitney and Mariah in there. I really love all the tunes in this, a mix to get a sweat on to on the dance floor! I must give thanks to DJs like OK Williams, Helena Star, TDunn, Amaliah and Eliza Rose for keeping the house feels alive, being my DJ inspirations and constantly putting me on to absolute belters!" - @scarlett_omalley Tracklist: Trevor Rockcliffe - Visions Of You Galaxy 2 Galaxy feat. In this episode of The New Abnormal podcast, I interview the journalist and broadcaster Emma-Louise Boynton, who has a background as a broadcast producer, working with the likes of Sky News, the BBC and Tina Brown Media. She's the co-founder and CEO of Her Hustle, which launched in 2019 and lifts the veil on the world of work, empowering women to carve out a career they want, on their own terms. They believe that everyone should be given the opportunity to build a career that combines passion and purpose. (Emma was also the co-founder of Venn Media, and is Politics & Society Editor of 'The Stack'.) So, in this interview, we discuss her ethos and viewpoints, why she believes that everyone has a capacity to make change, her approach to sharing female narratives, and a 'How To' strategy regarding female career paths. Along the way, she highlights some of the amazing women she's interviewed and the dynamic events produced by Her Hustle, which have featured an array of extraordinary individuals. Finally, she outlines some exciting news re: next steps for the network...
