Golf Club Talk UK

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2025 61:47

In this episode, Leighton delves into the remarkable transformation of Basingstoke Golf Club, telling the story through the evolution of the course itself. What began as an ambitious project years ago saw the club make a bold move half a mile across the M3 to Dummer Golf Club. The transition included selling the original site for development and acquiring Dummer Golf Course, all while ensuring that the members always had a course to play on. Scott and Bruce join Leighton to discuss the early challenges of this endeavor, including navigating planning hurdles, managing water resources, and crafting layouts that allowed for continuous play. They also talk about how they managed to preserve key elements of the old Dummer course while giving it a major facelift, modernizing the chalk downland course with dramatic improvements. The greens, in particular, stand out with their impressive movement and challenging pin placements. Now entering its first full season, Scott is focused on making sure the course plays hard, fast, and in top condition. This episode highlights how innovation, drive, and a clear vision can not only reshape a golf course but also secure the future of a beloved, long-standing club. https://www.basingstokegolfclub.co.uk/ https://www.golfclubtalk.uk/the-green-print/ The Greenprint on Linkedin  https://www.instagram.com/thegreenprintuk/   "Follow" The Greenprint on your podcast platform to get episodes downloaded straight into your feed

Welcome to the first episode of The Greenprint! In this inaugural episode, we dive into the incredible story of Raglan Golf Club in Monmouthshire, Wales—a course that has truly risen from the ashes. After closing its doors following the COVID-19 pandemic, Raglan was purchased in early 2024 by a group hailing from Monmouthshire, and its rebirth is nothing short of inspiring. Lucy, the driving force behind the revitalization, shares her journey in transforming the course from a state of disrepair to one that's ready to open in early April. From rebuilding greens to adding new tees and bunkers, Lucy has tackled every challenge, including restoring irrigation systems and improving drainage. She also discusses the agronomic hurdles of reopening a course after being closed for over two years, including selecting the right grass species for greens that were initially sown with fescue. This episode is a fascinating look at how a struggling venue can be brought back to life with the right vision, support, and the dedication of passionate people. Reports suggest that climate change is set to cost the global economy $38 billion per year by 2049. Emerging markets need close to $2.4 trillion per year by 2030 to meet the climate goals. That's 4 times what is currently invested. But high capital costs are stalling clean energy investment across Africa. If you want to build a renewable energy project in Sub-Saharan Africa, the weighted average cost of capital would be up to 4x as much as the same project in Western Europe or the US, due to the real and perceived risks of investing on the continent. If the world invests in renewables and green technology in Africa at Africa's cost of capital, it will underinvest in green energy assets. 00:00 - The climate funding gap01:01 - It's 4x more expensive to build an energy project in Africa02:10 - The cheapest energy is where there is high energy density03:26 - Startup financing needs06:23 - Addressing funding challenges at the multinational levelCheck out more episodes of The Greenprint here. This episode of The Greenprint was produced in partnership with Catalyst Fund, Delta40, and Africa Climate Ventures.Delta40 is a venture studio and venture capital fund supporting diverse founders leading ventures in energy, agriculture, and fintech, with a special focus on supporting African and female entrepreneurs. This is the first park project to be based on the Greenprint for the Hill District, by Walter Hood Design Studio. The Greenprint's aim is to reconnect Hill District residents to their unique landscape and the neighborhood to the city as a whole. Ultimately, it envisions the Hill as a ‘Village in the Woods' above the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. While much of the global conversation surrounding carbon emissions centers on transportation issues the built environment is responsible for about 40% of global emissions, while transportation is just 20%. Directly after recording this episode, the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a new report going further than any previous statement indicating that climate change is “a code red for humanity”. While some of these changes are irreversible, this demonstrates the growing importance of climate mitigation and adaptation globally, particularly in the real estate industry. Both Elena and Marta share their perspectives from their respective roles, Elena being with a leading real estate investor, and Marta leading a global alliance of real estate owners, investors, and strategic partners from the Urban Land Institute. The 14th episode of the Agri Food Comms-Cast focuses on two topics in the food and farming supply chain that chime with the autumn season, where the temperatures drop and the nights draw in. First up is Rebecca Davidson, rural affairs specialist at NFU Mutual, who has the task of communicating why crime on farms should mean something to anyone who consumes food. Rebecca explains the challenges of communicating the contents of the annual Rural Crime Report to different media channels, including broadcast and the broadsheets, and the wider public year-on-year. Then just in time for the Halloween festivities, we have Tessa Tricks from the environmental charity, Hubbub, that's behind the annual pumpkin rescue campaign #EatYourPumpkin. She explains how through a consumer survey, they found the best way to help people use leftover pumpkins and reduce food waste after Halloween was to provide tasty recipes, particularly from celebrity chefs. The charity also promotes pumpkin festivals to collect and eat delicious food from leftover pumpkins along with lobbying the government with their Greenprint; a series of policy asks to encourage a nationwide reduction in food waste across the supply chain.

Because different states generate more or less electricity from fossil fuels, your results will vary. If you have already installed solar on your home to power your car, the savings can be almost 100% of your commuting carbon footprint. Sarah Lozanova shares how the real estate industry is upgrading its building standards and her experience living in a passive house. Commercial buildings account for 39 percent of global carbon emissions, which can be lowered by introducing more efficient construction and technology that are part of the LEED standards from the U.S. Green Building Council. The Urban Land Institute's Center for Sustainability and Economic Performance has introduced the Greenprint program to help drive improved standards and reporting about sustainable building practices. In this episode of Lean the F*ck Out, we talk with Leah Madden, founder and managing director of Greenprint Growth Partners, about how she helps companies maximize value beyond the launch phase and find the right funding strategies to match with their growth plans. Funding Your Business Beyond the Launch Phase Episode Highlights: All companies should have some sort of a plan for capital building (funding), no matter the size. To create a strong investor pipeline, target: investors that work with companies at your stage and focus on the industry or sector your company is in. Companies with investors as their main funding source, should have 20-30 investors in their circle of trust. Relationship management is critical to all funding. Companies should have three main focus areas: 1. Customers 2. Operations 3. Investors. As early as possible have a cash flow statement for your company. This will create a runway (number of months your company will be able to exist based on the capital you have) for you to understand your funding needs. A company in growth mode is likely managing more for cash flow than profitability. There are many ways to fund a business, including: bank loans, grants, crowdfunding, self-funding, raising capital from investors. Trying to think of self as your most important employee. How would you treat her? What environment would she be the most effective and productive in? Leah Madden Leah is the founder and managing director of Greenprint Growth Partners, where she helps companies maximize value beyond the launch phase, with a focus on startup and growth strategy, exit and M&A scenario analysis, capital markets research, and capital raising. Before starting Greenprint, Leah's career was in the consumer sector, primarily focused on food and beverage products and services. She oversaw corporate strategy and asset management for a San Francisco private portfolio, and held general management and operations roles for Marriott International and Two Roads Hospitality. Kunal previously served as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for the Sacramento Kings, where he oversaw several strategic, political, media and community initiatives. He managed the Kings delegation to the 2014 NBA Global Games series in China, formulated the team’s “Greenprint” sustainability agenda, and developed the acclaimed Sacramento First labor and community benefits package for the Golden 1 Center. In his previous role as Executive Director of Think BIG Sacramento, Kunal served as Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson’s chief advisor in efforts to develop a public private finance plan for a new downtown arena, win NBA approval to keep the Kings in Sacramento, and facilitate sale of the franchise to a new ownership group. Kunal Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The work of the Green Sports Alliance Engaging fans in sustainability through sports Communicating the business value of sustainability Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Kunal's Final Five Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? Think big and think broadly. So, I get approached all the time by people who have a real passion for green, for sustainability and they want to make it the centerpiece of their jobs. And there are increasingly jobs out there in the marketplace that are these explicit jobs around sustainability, about the environment. But I remind them, you're talking to somebody who used to work for a basketball team, that ended up having a really big sustainability piece of his job. There is an opportunity in all sorts of jobs to focus on sustainability. You just have to be creative enough to pursue it. So, look at those sustainability jobs as traditional categories, but also challenge yourself to see about ways where you could pull sustainability into other jobs and make it a piece of the puzzle as well. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? As an American, I feel like we are at our best when our backs are against the wall, and you see that play out throughout history. I think finally you're seeing a level of attention to the crisis around climate change and around these issues, and I'm really excited about the level of ambition I'm seeing at a more local level. Obviously, some of these big issues are only going to get solved at a federal or even international level, but state governments, local public policy makers and some of these new governors in Colorado and California are what I'm really excited about. And then, just everyday citizens organizing around elements of this that they are inspired by, and the technological tools and the media tools we have today, you can do so much more than you used to. I'm just so excited about this bottom up approach I'm seeing because we can't afford to wait around for the people at the top if they're not getting it. That really gets me really excited and I want to do everything I can to help support that. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? So, I'm sure there's all sorts of cool books at the cool kids' table in sustainability, but I got to say, there's an old classic that I still have, which you probably remember Josh, it's called 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth. This is a book I read when I was probably eight or nine years old growing up in Colorado. Of course it's a little corny and it's and it's certainly small scale, but I think there's a power of messaging and communication in there. When I was a kid, I read this book and it gave me these incredibly tactical, practical things I could do to do my part. Whoever you are and wherever you are in the green space, we have to explain this issue the right way. We're failing right now. The community at large does not understand what's at stake and it's on us to fix that. So, I think that's a great book. I look at every now and then just to remind myself that you can get lost in all of the jargon and the technical pieces of this and the data and all that, but you have to connect with people. That was a book that connected with me as an eight year old kid and really affected my whole view on the world. We need to be doing more things like that. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? The obvious one is just the Green Sports Alliance network. I would say that even if I wasn't on the board, because a lot of the work I'm doing on sustainability is tied to sports. But I think even if you're not in sports, I would check out the website, greensportsalliance.org. Check out a lot of these resources and playbooks that they've come up with because they're transferable to other industries. We may have customized them specific to sports teams and leagues, but in terms of trying to tell a story to consumers, tell a story to businesses, and what to prioritize and how to organize it, we've spent a lot of time thinking about that. I pull those tools all the time to help me in my work. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and your work? I would recommend going into my website, lotusadvisory.com or just shoot me an email at kunal@lotusadvisory.com. It’s about being healthier, happier, better to the animals, kinder to each other and the planet – and it all stems from what we’re putting into our bodies.”Marco BorgesLast week, Beyoncé and Jay-Z made news across the world with a headline grabbing offer: take the plant-based pledge and you just might win concert tickets for life. When the most culturally significant and influential entertainment couple on the planet throws down like this, it’s a big deal. The tectonic plates of social culture shift. Conventional attitudes and habits around food change. [18:09] Is resiliency is just another word for disaster preparedness? [20:29] John addresses how to have the conversation of investing money for the benefit of something that won’t happen, like a flood. [23:28] John identifies the pieces of his plan that will continue beyond the grant. [27:07] John mentions how people find more information and take a look at Shelby’s resilience plan. Guest/Organization:John Zeanah is the Deputy Director of the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development. In this role, Mr. Zeanah assists the direction of planning functions including land use, comprehensive planning, sustainability and resilience, transportation, housing, and development services. Mr. Zeanah holds a BA in Political Science from Rhodes College and a Master of City and Regional Planning from the University of Memphis. Take Away Quotes:“I think the evolution of resilience is pushing people to think beyond just, how do you bounce back from a flood, or how do you build back from a hurricane, but also as you’re building back, as you’re bouncing back, how are you doing that in a way that’s addressing so many of the social and economic issues that your community may face.” “I don’t know that the way that we’ve thought about disaster preparedness as a practice has taken in, at least to the degree that we’ve seen in the last few years around resilience, this concept of focusing on co-benefits, focusing on the multiple benefits, and ensuring that what we do around a preparedness initiative or project in a community has benefits throughout the year.” “My advice for any community out there is think about when you have a disaster, whether it’s a flood or something else, what are the systems that have to get in place to be able to prevent damage from happening? What are the cleanup efforts that have to take place? What’s the dollar value of those things?” Resources:http://resilientshelby.com/ (Learn More about Shelby County’s Resilience Efforts) http://resilientshelby.com/overview/resilience-activities/resilience-plan/ (Resilient Shelby – Resilience Plan) https://shelbycountytn.gov/18/Planning-Development (Shelby County Planning and Development) http://midsouthgreenprint.org (Mid-South Regional Greenprint) http://infiniteearthacademy.com/podcast/radical-innovation-and-resilient-infrastructure-climate-adaptation/ (Infinite Earth Radio Episode 045 Radical Innovation and Resilient Infrastructure—Climate Adaptation) with Shalini Vajjhala
