Our second premiere of the day is an acid-soaked rework of Bon Voyag's High Power from Manchester-born producer Andrew Sant. The pumping refix is made specifically for the early hours, as it comes loaded with punchy drums, menacing synth lines, and 90's rave energy. Following the epic Bon Voyage 2023 rework of ‘High Power', F*CLR presents part 2 courtesy of Australian via Manchester House fanatic Andrew Sant. Andrew says: “I was listening to a Colleen Cosmo Murphy mix on YouTube and she played the dub mix of ‘Makin Music' by Gary's Gang. The track really captured my attention and I wanted to try and make something in a similar vein – kind of futuristic electronic disco. So, I developed an instrumental, led by a driving arpeggio. I felt the track needed a vocal hook and as if by magic ‘High Power' fell from the sky”. Mancunian DJ, producer and remixer Andrew Sant now resides in Adelaide, Australia. The founder of The Sweet Fantastic, releasing ‘Do It To The Music' last year on F*CLR, Andrew has also released and remixed on labels such as 3 AM Recordings, Tri-Circle, Tarantic, Kolour Open Bar, and Playmore. His career has taken him around the globe from Sankey's Soap and the Warehouse Project, Manchester, The Bomb, Nottingham, Miss Moneypenny's at BoHo, Ibiza. The second edition of the ‘High Power' reworks sees Andrew Sant turn his focus directly to the dancefloor, capturing the essence of 90's rave with a more contemporary and pulsating approach. Vintage-style acid squelches play off sinister synth hooks and quivering bass grooves for a pumping slice of dancefloor ecstasy. Andrew Sant remains thoroughly faithful to the high-powered energy of the original while lacing his rework with an extra dose of hazy rave energy. Early on he won residencies for Trade at Turnmills, Egg and Limelight while also making his mark in New York holding a weekly show at The Palladium for Steve Rubell during the height of Paradise Garage. He has also graced the main floor of Privilege Ibiza, Space, Amnesia and DC10. A regular at Ministry of Sound and Glitterbox, Tony has already in this short season of 2021 played Defected Festival in Croatia, One Out & Wilderness Festival and countless other venues with The Warehouse Project and so much more around the corner. As official DJ to the icons like Elton John, Kate Moss and Donatella Versace, he is also one of the fashion scene's go to performers. As one of club culture's most notorious - and best loved - figures, Tony is a complete force of nature. In his recent book I Don't Take Requests, he tells the most extraordinary stories of depravity and hedonism, of week-long benders and extreme self-destruction - and of recovery, redemption, friendship and the joy of a good tune.'Anyone can get a party started, but no one keeps it going like Fat Tony, the energy never dips andwhat a life he's lived.. He's a tosser but we still love him.' ELTON JOHN & DAVID FURNISHDJ Fat Tony has been described as 'the closest thing that club culture has to a national treasure' and the 'unlikely cult hero of quarantine'. Few people have crammed so many lives into one: when your first line of cocaine is aged 16 with Freddie Mercury, where do you go from there? I Don't Take Requests is Fat Tony's breathtakingly candid and outrageous memoir of a life of extremes. From his childhood on an estate in Battersea where he honed his petty criminality, was abused by an older man and made friends with Boy George, to his teenage years spent parading the Kings Road in his latest (stolen) clobber, working as a receptionist for a prostitute, hanging out with Leigh Bowery and Sue Tilley and creating his drag persona, to his life as DJ to the stars and his spiral into serious drug addiction. Now, he is 16 years sober and, alongside working to help others overcome addiction, DJing for everyone from Elton John to Louis Vuitton - and running one of lockdown's most popular Instagram accounts with its wickedly funny memes. Vanessa Maria is a DJ, Broadcaster at Foundation FM, and a host at Resident Advisor. Named as one of the most important young people in music, Vanessa has made her mark on radio stations across the country sharing her love for underground UK music. She's been busy making appearances at Boiler room, Dazed Magazine, Warehouse Project and HÖR in Berlin. Vanessa's work in and around mental health has also not gone unnoticed. As the key presenter at Resident Advisor, she currently hosts a music and mental health-related podcast and documentary series. She has been named as a leader in shaping the future of London's nightlife by The Face Magazine. "It means feeling so othered that you clearly stick out in a certain context. That might be the way you look, your race. In my case, it was being black at university. But in that same context, even though I was so visible - and it was so clear that I was present and there because I stuck out - I was also so hyper-invisible because I was in the minority. My voice was felt so insignificant, and I felt so unimportant and I felt so undervalued in that same context. So it was a weird feeling to navigate, to feel visible and invisible at the exact same time."
In this episode I am joined by Mark Mcmahon, an Artist Liason for The Warehouse Project, Creamfields, JBM Music, The Royal Albert Hall and also worked for myself and the team at Hide&Seek Festival. Mark shares his insights about the role and gives some great advice about getting your foot in the door and working within the industry. This is a great episode and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting to Mark.
Remmah returns to Ireland, as Rory Hamilton aka @thehammerhits welcomes a 9th label release, as the Derry duo consisting of Dave Lievense and Stephen Porter aka @opusklien drop their brand new Aeronautic EP. Dave Lievense and Stephen Porter have spent years honing hard-won reputations for quality on their own projects before linking up to form Opus Klien, with Lievense best known as one half of Hotflush, Planet E and Cocoon-affiliated outfit Psycatron, and Porter building one of Ireland's most highly regarded events series, Jika Jika! Having made a mark with a pair of remixes and a run of thunderous live performances, including regular appearances at The Warehouse Project and dates supporting Daniel Avery and Dense & Pika, the Aeronautic EP finds the Irish duo's debut EP mining both their shared acid house and bleep techno influences, and the electronic pop & avant garde music of their youth. The resultant four tracks ride waves of euphoria and intensity that made them a perfect fit for the cosmic techno/italo/acid-infused sound Hammer has established in his curation of the label so far – making an appearance himself with his own sharp & to-the-point reshaping of Monsters. Since the pandemic hit, no part of the music scene has been dissected so minutely by people with less direct knowledge than the club and festival circuit. That was inevitable - everyone loves to party and far too many take an unhealthy pleasure in the misfortune of others. Thankfully on this week's show we have some actual expertise to draw upon. Rich McGinnis has an inordinate amount of experience of the area in question, going back to the early days of the rave scene in Northern Ireland, working at https://www.amnesia.es/inicio/en (Amnesia) in Ibiza, to being one of the key players in the seminal North-West parties http://chibuku.com/ (Chibuku Shake Shake), https://www.circusclub.co.uk/ (Circus), and The https://www.thewarehouseproject.com/ (Warehouse Project). He's also found time to play a key role in festivals including https://parklife.uk.com/ (Parklife) and https://loveboxfestival.com/ (Lovebox). We talk about all of the above, plus the perils of chaperoning the denizens of Big Beat, why it's not always wise to build a DJ their own special booth for one gig, how ecstasy can change international politics, and much else besides. Rich is a raconteur with stories to tell and you will enjoy this episode! On https://hotflush.bandcamp.com/ (Hotflush) affiliated labels this week, Biemsix returns to Who Whom with the first part of a 5-track EP of signature deep and energetic techno.
