Often voted the scariest story in all of old time radio!
There are likely many more creatures, cryptids and fearsome critters that you're unaware of than there are ones you're familiar with. In fact, even the devils you think you know may be more unknown to you than you realize. And it's only natural to fear the unknown, especially when the unknown is unnatural. Primary subjects for this episode include local lore and the Golden Age of Radio horror play, "The Thing on the Fourble Board."

It's Halloween, and our star this week headlines one of the scariest shows Suspense ever aired. Ralph Edwards, best known as the jovial host of madcap game shows, stars as a radio DJ narrating his trip through a haunted house in "Ghost Hunt" (originally aired on CBS on June 23, 1949). Then, we'll hear him as host of Truth or Consequences in a Halloween-themed episode (originally aired on NBC on October 30, 1948). Finally, in the spirit of the season, we'll hear a bonus episode from the horror anthology Quiet Please - the classic radio chiller "The Thing on the Fourble Board" (originally aired on Mutual on August 9, 1949).
This is a bonus podcast for the Month Of Spooky 2019. We play what has become a yearly tradition during the spooky season. It is titled The Thing On The Fourble Board and aired on August 9, 1948. Featured Story - The Thing On The Fourble Board This podcast features the most highly regarded episode of the old-time radio series Quiet, Please. It is called The Thing on the Fourble Board. This story has led both fans and OTR experts to label the episode one of the best radio horror programs ever broadcast. Richard J. Hand of the University of Glamorgan notes that "The Thing on the Fourble Board" is not only cited as the finest example of radio horror but occasionally cited as one of the best examples of radio drama as a whole. An oil rig worker discovers an invisible creature of unknown origins living beneath the depths of the earth. What happens to this man is horrific, and the ending is absolutely brilliant. If you’re alone, turn the lights down low and listen. It will help get you into a Halloween mood. Sponsored by: This podcast is brought to you by Audible. This time on we begin The Month of Spooky 2018. During this month you can expect the unexpected, hear the unbelievable and witness stories that stretch the imagination. On this program we have a BEK story from Texas, hear about an 18-year-old boy who died on the , and we have a terrifying tale from the coffers of old-time radio. Featured Story - The Thing on the Fourble Board One of the traditions here during the Month Of Spooky is that we play one of my favorite old time radio shows. It places at number 20 on the top 30 list as one of the very scariest ever. By today's standards, it’s quite tame, but if you go back to 1948 not so much. The story is called The Thing on the Fourble Board, and it was part of the “Quiet, Please” anthology series. It first aired on August 9, 1948. Program Note: We will be continuing the novel Anything You Can Do by Randall Garrett in November. However, I will continue to update it at the each week with new installments. It's our 50th episode and to celebrate, the Society is listening to this beloved episode of Quiet, Please! An oil-drilling roughneck encounters a terrifying mystery after his team digs up something unexpected from deep beneath the Earth's surface. What greater horror lurks beneath the telling of this tale? How can Cecil Roy make such disturbing […]
"Quiet Please" - originally broadcast August 9, 1948, 69 years ago. Episode titled "The Thing on the Fourble Board." Oil drilling creates the deepest holes inside the Earth in order to exhume rocks dating back millions of years. Together, they form overlapping layers of dirt and rocks, covering something down there, deep in the past. It is only a matter of time before the excavators brought it up on the surface. "The Thing on the Fourble Board" is a weird tale about a roughneck, an oil rig worker who was involved in some strange goings on twenty years earlier. Whilst drilling, he and one of his colleagues came across some unexpected contents in the core of earth that had been drilled up from several thousand feet underground. Discovering an ornate gold ring amongst the rubble was odd enough, but this paled in significance when compared to what came along with it.
