When you work where others play, you need a partner you can trust to keep your course in perfect condition. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.auJames Newell is Superintendent of Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club on the NSW Central Coast just north of Sydney. I took some time to catch up with James and record this podcast with him in his office at Magenta.James has an amazing story that harks back to his homeland in New Zealand. With a farm background and creating and playing on his own rudimentary golf course with his brother, working outside for a living wasn't a far flung idea and James was able to get his first taste of sports turf maintenance through working for a local council. Stepping through the years of working as an apprentice greenkeeper and playing golf regularly, James soon took the opportunity to for a short stint of work on course at the well known Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club. Over the next few years James worked at a couple of courses including the outstanding Cape Kidnappers before heading back to a great opportunity at Paraparaumu Beach GC.James' next career move saw him head across the ditch to the great Melbourne Sandbelt region. Taking in all that he continued to learn and be involved with in his career, it wasn't long before James landed his first career superintendents role at Magenta Shores in NSW.James and I also discuss just what it takes to not only look after and prepare Magenta Shores but also, to a further point, the detail that is required to understand and maintain any golf course. Why do we do what we do and how to get the best out of a golf course, all whilst understanding what and who you are doing it for. Golf greenkeeping isn't just about maintaining turf, it's about maintaining turf in a particular local environment for the game of golf. This is one epic convo! I didn't know what to clip out to make it shorter so I just left it all if for you to listen, so strap yourselves in for James and Steve's epic adventure! You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - thegolfinggreenkeeper@gmail.comPeople and places mentioned in this podcast:Magenta Shores Golf & Country ClubParaparaumu Beach Golf ClubCape KidnappersWoodlands Golf ClubYarra Yarra Golf ClubMount Lawley Golf ClubCrafter + Mogford Golf StrategiesOCM GolfRenaissance Golf Design Renaissance Golf Design - Tom Doak

At 3am on Sunday 23 March, police were notified of the disappearance of a 19-year-old woman last seen in Erina on the NSW Central Coast. The next day in the afternoon, police found the body of Audrey Griffin in a creek in Erina. At the time, police said the death was not suspicious. But yesterday a 53-year-old man was arrested in Surry Hills, Sydney, and charged with murder in relation to the woman's death.Anti-violence activist Sherele Moody is an award-winning journalist, femicide and child death researcher and the creator of Australia's only memorial to women and children lost to violence. Her projects include Australian Femicide Watch, The RED HEART Campaign and the ground-breaking Australian Femicide and Child Death Map. Sherele has been documenting the killing of women and children since 2015 and her work has been recognised with multiple awards.Another week another woman murdered. Her mission is to educate and advocate - Welcome to The RED HEART Campaign's Memorial to Women and Children Lost to Violence. This Memorial is designed to commemorate lives lost while providing a respectful interactive forum highlighting the impact of violence on our community. It tracks every known Australian woman and child killed as a result of murder, manslaughter or neglect. This is an ongoing project, with no start or end date. The intention is to continue documenting violent deaths from white Settlement to current day.I respectfully advise that the Memorial contains descriptions of extreme acts of terrorism against women and children and may cause distress. The Memorial also holds the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children lost to violence and (in limited cases) some of these victims are named and their images are used. This project is inspired by the memories of nine-year-old Stacey-Ann Tracy and five-year-old Sandra Dorothy Bacon. It is a tribute to their young lives, their unfulfilled futures and the bravery of their families and friends who were forced to navigate the distress and darkness that only those touched by murder can understand. This project is also a pledge to every Australian woman and child lost to violence – our nation cannot change your stories, but collectively, we can change the stories of those who follow in your footsteps. After violence, hope is all that remains. This podcast includes material that some listeners may find distressing. This video isa a full review and road test of the Elecbrakes eb2 brake controller. What makes the Elecbrakes eb2 so interesting and effective? Here in Australia you need an electric brake controller to tow any trailer over two tonnes. The conventional approach involves hard-wiring a controller to every vehicle tasked with towing such a trailer. That gets kind of expensive. Especially if you've got one trailer - a boat, caravan, camper trailer, horse float, excavator, diesel generator, whatever, and multiple vehicles, potentially, that tow it.You could be up for several hard-wired brake controllers. And if you upgrade to a new vehicle, you instantly need another one, plus you need to pay for installation, again. There's actually a much better way to do this. That 'better way' is the EB2 brake controller from Elecbrakes. Elecbrakes is an Aussie business on the NSW Central Coast. They've got integrated production, assembly and R&D, in-house. They're legitimately an Aussie manufacturing innovator and success story. But until I got tipped off, I'd never actually heard of them.A simple black box is the brain. It stays on the trailer, and if it's there, you DO NOT need a brake controller fitted to the tow vehicle. It's simple but sophisticated - there's even an accelerometer inside, which enables proportional braking, plus you get dynamic adaptation to hills built in.So: one trailer, one controller. And most handy dudes can install the EB2 easily. Four self-drilling screws is really all it takes. And they're in the box. The braking response is very tunable. You can easily tweak it for your particular combination. Plus, there are five preset programs.

Australia is struggling with a number of crisis situations – a cost-of-living crisis, a housing affordability crisis and a rental shortage crisis. Our beloved Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has declared on many occasions how much he cares about the plight of ordinary Australians in dealing with these issues. But, as the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words – and that is particularly relevant to our elected representatives who love to stand before the media cameras and declare their concern for the people but fail to match their words with appropriate actions. So, let's look at how the Prime Minister has handled his personal housing market issues in 2024. In May this year Albanese evicted a long-standing tenant in a property he owned in the Sydney suburb of Dulwich Hill. At the time, the tenant declared he was shocked to learn he no longer had a place to live and had no idea he was going to be kicked out of his home of four years. At the time the tenant said he had tried to seek clarification of the situation and why he had to leave but did not receive a response. He said at the time: “It seems a little bit misaligned with the messaging Labor has been putting out ... about recognising how difficult it is for renters.” He also said: “It's a crippling blow for me right now. I have mixed emotions in calling this out. I voted for Albo at the last election and am broadly a supporter of his policies.” So, PM Albanese, having got rid of the pesky tenant, then put the Dulwich Hill property on the market, with an auction scheduled for October. This was a three-bedroom townhouse at 29B Lewisham St in Dulwich Hill which Albanese bought for $1.17 million in 2015 and was advertising for auction with a price guide of $1.9 million. If it sold at that price, it would represent a 62% gain in nine years. But then, at the last minute, the Prime Minister cancelled the auction and decided not to sell the property after all. He evicted his tenant because he said he wanted to sell and then decided NOT to sell. Then, in the same week, it was revealed he had spent $4.3 million on a new home on the Central Coast north of Sydney. This is Albo the battler we're talking about, the guy who loves to talk about his tough working-class roots and growing up in a housing commission environment. Albanese said he planned initially on leasing out the property with views over Copacabana Beach, with estimates he will pocket between $2000 and $2500 a week in rental income. A Labor MP, who declined to be named, said the purchase was “not a great look” for Albanese, who will have to fight hard to hold on to government at the next federal election. Responding to claims the purchase was a bad look in a cost-of-living crisis and a housing market crisis, Albanese, who earns more than $600,000 a year, said he knew “what it is like to struggle”, referring to his upbringing in public housing in Sydney's Camperdown. “I am much better off as Prime Minister. I earn a good income. I understand that,” he said. Columnist Dennis Shanahan wrote in The Australian: “There are two unequivocal things to say about Anthony Albanese's decision to buy a $4.3 million cliff top, ocean view home on the NSW Central Coast. The first is — good on him. Well done for living the Australian dream of home ownership and getting there on his own. “The second is this — this has to be the dumbest, most damaging piece of political tone deafness and timing since Tony Abbott appointed Prince Philip as a “Knight of the Order of Australia” in the Australia Day honours' list in 2015.” Shanahan wrote: “No matter what Albanese says to justify the purchase, it's a bad political look that makes him appear out of touch with people renting and trying to buy their own home. It also raises the immediate thought that it's a retirement parachute for after the next election.” Meanwhile, on the same day as the $4.3 million purchase was revealed, it was the AGM of Commonwealth Bank – which reported that more and more customers are feeling the pinch from the cost-of-living crisis. Commonwealth Bank chief executive Matt Comyn revealed huge numbers of Australians are falling behind on their mortgage repayments. He told shareholders the bank has offered tailored hardship payment arrangements to 132,000 customers over the past year. Comyn said: “Households are continuing to find it very challenging.” But certainly not the household of our battler Prime Minister. Albo is doing very well indeed. He's just paid over $4 million for a home he won't be living in and he has decided he doesn't need to sell his $1.9 million investment property in Sydney to afford it. And that's perplexing news for the tenant he evicted on the grounds that he needed to sell the property, before subsequently changing his mind.
This week, news broke that Anthony Albanese bought a slice of paradise set on the clifftops of the NSW Central Coast. Forking out $4.3m on a property created some bruising headlines for the prime minister, but did he actually do anything wrong?Bridie Jabour talks to editor-in-chief Lenore Taylor, deputy editor Patrick Keanelly and national news editor Jo Tovey about what the anger around the PM's beach house says about the state of the housing crisis
It's probably our greatest national obsession. Property: buying it, selling it, how much it costs and how hard it is to afford. This week Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made headlines when it was reported he had bought a $4.3 million ocean-front beach house at Copacabana on the NSW Central Coast. Albanese said the purchase was made in contemplation of his changing personal circumstances. He is set to marry his partner Jodie Haydon, who grew up in the area and whose family still lives there. But the optics were unbelievably bad. Australia is in the midst of a cost of living crisis, and the related housing affordability crisis is one of the main, if not the main, issues for the next election. Joining Jacqueline Maley to unpack all this is chief political correspondent David Crowe and national affairs editor James Massola. The North Sydney Bears, a defunct memory of rugby league's once die-hard middle class. They were scrapped from the comp in 1999 - as the NRL made it clear there was no room for all these Sydney clubs that cannot win. But a fire still burns. Efficiency is a key focus for most practices at the moment, particularly those driven to work with their target market at a price point that works for everyone. In this Masterclass, I'm delighted to speak with David & Leasa McLean of Titan Financial Planning. Based in the NSW Central Coast, this was one of a number of goals we started working towards in 2022, with the goal to be able to create efficiencies in the back office that would reduce cost and capacity pressure, whilst enabling them to grow revenue and work with more clients. Along the way, David & Leasa has undertaken acquisition, wrestled with changes in licensing arrangements and implemented new pricing and service models, which makes what they have achieved all the more satisfying. This Masterclass will be great for anyone keen to get in under the DNA of a growing firm working with "strivers" and unpack what it takes to achieve sustainable growth. ====================================================================== To learn more, join our list and get the latest best practice insights in your inbox every fortnight > https://audere.com.au/blog/ Join our Free Best Practice Portal here > https://success.audere.com.au/ To know more about what I do, visit our website: https://audere.com.au Follow me on: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/financial-planning-business-coach/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/stew_bell Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stew_bell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@stewartbell Listen to The Finnovator Podcast on iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-finnovator/id1506529719 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5cbeOMTo7bLFbHJlmFOPad?si=cb95b6b6bb734bc0 #auderecoachingandconsulting #stewbell #practiceevolution #practiceexcellence #finnovator #financialadvice

Popular Jess Taylor brought up a very distinguished milestone at the Sapphire Coast meeting on July 30th. She bounced straight to the lead on Kiss the Colours in a 1000m maiden for her great supporter Joe Cleary. The 3YO filly went on to win easily to give Jess her 500th win in twelve years of race riding. Since then she's reeled off another twelve wins, including a double at the Sapphire Coast on Nov 2nd. Jess joined us on the podcast last week to talk about her notable achievement. She admits to being surprised when informed her 500 win tally was looming. Jess looks back on that special race at the Sapphire Coast. She talks about the standing of female riders in the current era. Jess takes us back to childhood days on the NSW Central Coast, and the influence of her mother Fione. She pays tribute to her “dream pony” Miller. The jockey says her life changed from the moment retired thoroughbreds came onto the family property. She talks of her introduction to trackwork at nearby Gosford racecourse. Jess remembers her lucky break in being able to land an apprenticeship with respected Gosford trainer Albert Stapleford. She looks back with some embarrassment on her first race ride at Cessnock. Jess says her first city performance was much better. The jockey has never forgotten the support given her by Gosford trainer Carmen Murnane who supplied her magical first winner on the new Tuncurry-Forster track. Jess talks of the short lived University course she began during her time with the Stapleford stable. She looks back on the wise counsel of the astute trainer. Jess remembers a winning double at Dubbo which caught the eye of Warwick Farm trainer Mark de Montfort. She talks of the valuable tuition offered by the former outstanding jockey. Jess looks back on her first city winner, and the support of several other Warwick Farm trainers. The jockey has fond memories of her first black type win. She talks about her four Gr 1 rides to date. Jess talks about the inevitable accidents, including two that happened within a short space of time. She looks back on another serious accident that had nothing to do with race riding. Jess recalls her frustration that she wasn't able to win a race at Randwick during her apprenticeship. She quickly corrected that anomaly. The jockey pays special tribute to Kembla trainer Theresa Bateup for whom she's ridden more winners than any other trainer. Jess and partner Katie are raising two wonderful kids on the Central Coast. She talks warmly of Evelyn and Noah. Jess doesn't take for granted her ability to ride at a featherweight. She hopes one day it might earn her the ride on a lightweight chance in a high profile race. A laid back chat with the newest member of the “500 Club”.

Our guest this episode is Philip Moore, who in February 2022 became the first Australian inducted into the Gin Magazine's Hall of Fame. Now you might well ask, who is Philip Moore? He's certainly not one of our highest profile gin distillers. But he was actually the first Australian gin distiller to win a gold at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, and his distilling career stretches back to the very early days of contemporary Australian gin.Prior to that, Philip studied and trained as a horticulturist and medical herbalist. In the mid 1980s he started a specialist culinary herb nursery, Renaissance Herbs, which grew from a single greenhouse into the largest wholesale herb nursery in Australia, cultivating close to a million plants a year.Meanwhile, Philip had developed a passion for wine and subsequently, distilled spirits including gin.He exited the herbs business in 2005 and purchased a nursery site on the NSW Central Coast, where he subsequently founded Distillery Botanica and the Moore's Dry Gin brand. And together with Tom Baker, he co-founded the hugely successful Mr Black Coffee Liqueur, which we explored with Tom back in Season 8.This is a wide-ranging interview with Philip about his career and the evolution of Australian gin.He certainly doesn't hold back with his opinions on the use of Australian natives by distillers. He shares some tips on how to taste spirits more effectively, and you'll also hear about Philip's new venture, Terrigal Rum Company. That's all coming up in this interview with Distillery Botanica founder Philip Moore.Tags: gin, distilling, distillery, distiller, liquor, craft spirits, distilled spirits, cocktail, cocktails, drink, drinks, wine, winemaking, winemaker, viticulture, beer, craft beer, brewing, agave, tequila, mezcal, bartender, bartenders, sommelier, sommeliers, cicerone, whisky, whiskey, cognac, bourbon, vodka, vineyard, mixology, bars, pubs, restaurants, hospitality
James Heddo thought he was in need of a change of career direction when he resigned from the ATC Executive team in 2020. He found that. change in the hospitality industry, spending some 15 months as CEO of the Terrigal Bowling Club. He hadn't factored in the withdrawal symptoms associated with leaving the racing industry after 33 years. Few were surprised when he was recently appointed as CEO of the Hawkesbury Race Club. We talk to James about time away from the racetrack. He talks of the rich history of racing in the Hawkesbury region, and the high profile Sydney trainers who are clamoring for stable accommodation. James takes us back to the Doomben meeting he attended with his mother and siblings in 1978. He says the outing was the catalyst for his career in racing even though he was completely lost on the day. He looks back on the special day a decade later when he started his new job as a racing assistant with the Sydney Turf Club. Part of the job was to attend Rosehill trackwork every morning. Some of his most cherished memories come from this era. James nominates his favourite trainer, horse and jockey. The experienced administrator recalls his move to Townsville after twelve years with the STC. He loved every minute of his five years in northern Queensland. James looks back on the chance phone conversation that led him to an appointment as the CEO of the Bendigo Jockey Club. Again he cherished the experience. A lover of the NSW Central Coast from an early age, James jumped at the opportunity to take over as CEO of the Gosford Race Club. He learned many other facets of race club administration over the next eight years. With 28 years in race club administration under his belt, it was no surprise when James Heddo landed the role of Executive General Manager of Racing Services with the Australian Turf Club. James looks back on his five years with the relatively new race club. James pays tribute to some special people who helped shape his career. It's a pleasant trip down memory lane with a man who's made many friends in racing over more than three decades.

As the saying goes, there are no manuals provided when it comes to becoming a parent. Our culture really lets parents down - especially mothers - during the rite of passage which takes us out of our Maidenhood via pregnancy and birth into new Motherhood. The function of a rite of passage is to prepare people to successfully take on the new role and identity successfully. When this isn't done, we are set up for feeling like a failure because we just don't know what to expect, nor how to handle to huge, overwhelming emotions that come with new parenthood. When we become pregnant, all the education offered zones right in on how to navigate birth - and that's about it. Popular baby showers focus on sharing gifts for the baby. Home-based prep is on getting the right clothes, nursery, and ideal pram. All eyes are on the growing bump, and when the baby is born, all excitement is overwhelmingly abuzz about the sweet new baby. But when we're obsessing over how we raise the baby, who is concerned with raising the Mother? In this episode I had a powerful conversation with Alita Blanchard, who is a mother of 4 young boys (including a stillborn son Remy) on the NSW Central Coast. Alita is a trauma informed Conscious Parent Coach, Emotional Release Coach, Women's Circle and Rites of Passage facilitator, and she is passionate about creating a safe space for mothers to feel heard and seen in the intensity of their motherhood journey. She supports and guides mothers in their transformation through motherhood and helps to bring awareness to their own needs and emotions so they can feel more aligned, aware and connected to themselves and their children. We spoke about:What conscious / aware parenting principles are,How culturally in the West we are and are not prepared and initiated into Motherhood well and what the impacts of this are, Why Mothers need help to be able to process and release emotions so much, Occasions and triggers when Mothers commonly struggle most and what we can do to support ourselves,How Alita's work is so profoundly different to what is widely available and how she guides women to heal their own experiences, and in turn feel like the Mother they desire to be.
