What's up, dudes? It's a Barry Levinson passion project, and it's next level nuts! Yes, it's the Robin Williams vehicle “Toys!” I've got Jeremy Phelps the Alamo City Santa and Sean Sotka from the Christmas Podcasts Podcast with me to talk all about the bonkers film.Eccentric toymaker Kenneth Zevo passes away, and his last wish is that his brother the Lieutenant General take over the running of the business. Leland is a military man through and through, and sees little point in toy making. The business should really have been given to Kenneth's son Leslie. Controversially, the General begins making war toys against the company's longstanding tradition and philosophy. Eventually, he begins making toys with live weaponry behind Leslie's back, and recruiting children to pilot his army. Leslie, his new girlfriend, and his family—including his robot sister—have to band together to put an end to Leland's tyranny. Oh, they do. Elephant conveyor belt? Yep. Robin Wright? Uh huh. This podcast describes a short history of a man who did something we've lost in America. That man was James Baldwin who insisted on telling the truth. He confronted the harsh realities of racism, believing that exposing its ugliness was necessary for progress. He rejected simplistic solutions, arguing that racism was deeply rooted in American consciousness and imagination, beyond just political and economic inequalities. Instead, Baldwin called for a fundamental transformation of American society and identity. He critiqued white America, urging white Americans to confront their own behavior and complicity in racist systems. Controversially, Baldwin advocated for Black Americans to approach white countrymen with love, while still insisting on unconditional freedom, seeing this as necessary for true transformation. He ultimately wanted to build a nation that moved beyond racial categorization, focusing instead on individual humanity. Baldwin viewed racism as stemming from a deeper spiritual problem in America, where individuals and the nation lacked a true sense of identity. While he did not offer simple solutions to racism, Baldwin's penetrating analysis and powerful writing exposed the complexities of racism in our country, challenged both white and Black Americans to confront difficult truths, and provided a framework for understanding racism beyond just political reforms. His work continues to influence discussions on race in America today, aiming not to ameliorate racism in a superficial sense, but to push for a profound reckoning with and transformation of American society and identity in relation to race. Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone is a powerful novel that explores the complexities of race, sexuality, and identity in America through the life of its protagonist, Leo Proud/hammer. As the story begins, Leo, a successful African-American actor, suffers from a heart attack. As he recovers he reflects on his life and relationships. It is also of interest to note how James Baldwin's novel relates to Dr. Matin Luther King Jr.'s non-fiction book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? Both books are discussed in terms of the major contributions they made to racism in America as well as how they illustrate psychoanalytic mechanism of defense. Learn more about your ad choices. For this episode, Yvonne focuses on mindset, demonstrating in real-time how to turn a potential letdown into something positive that takes you closer to manifesting your dreams. She explains how to overcome doubt, reframe negative thoughts, use gratitude, and keep your vibe up when things are not going as smoothly as you had hoped. Controversially, she also explains why manifestation is not for everyone. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are all human, so it is only natural for doubts to creep in. When that happens, the right mindset will keep you on track. Anyone can learn mindset skills. You need to work on it every day. Stop telling yourself everything is so hard; you are pulling yourself down. Instead, frame everything with gratefulness e.g. “parenting is so hard” becomes “I am so lucky to be a parent.” You have to flip the script. Things will not change overnight, big manifesters like Jim Carey and Sarah Blakely took years to achieve everything they were visualising and manifesting. Pay attention to the signs. Kick fear and doubt to the kerb. The moment they creep in use your mindset skills to show them the door. BEST MOMENTS ‘A positive mindset is a skill. ´ ‘You have to be a little bit ballsy if you're trying to manifest your dream life.' ‘You need to shut down the voice.' ‘You will never manifest your dream life if you keep talking yourself out of it.' In this final chapter, Paul sums up his instructions to the Ephesians on spiritual warfare and household conduct. He charges children to honor their parents and fathers to guide their children in the Lord. Controversially, he also urges Christian slaves to obey earthly masters as they obey Christ. However, Paul urges all readers to stand firm against the schemes of the devil by putting on God's full armor. He details the armor of truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God. Paul closes his letter by sending greetings via Tychicus and a final benediction of peace, love and grace over the Ephesian believers. The Rev. Robert Moeller, Jr., pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pipestone, MN and Trinity Lutheran Church in Jaspar, MN, and St. John Lutheran Church, Trosky, MN joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Ephesians 6. Paul's letters to the Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians contain a wealth of theology and practical guidance for living out the Christian faith. Ephesians unpacks God's overarching plan of salvation and our identity in Christ, calling us to unity and holiness in the Church. Philippians overflows with joy, encouraging us to imitate Christ's humility and develop spiritual maturity. Colossians stresses Christ's preeminence and sufficiency, warning against false teaching and exhorting us to set our minds on things above. Together these essential epistles provide incredible insights into doctrines like grace, reconciliation, and redemption while also equipping us to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel in our relationships, speech, work, and ministry. Get ready to deepen your faith as we explore the powerful messages in Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians!

Dr Lisa Sanders, writes a column called Diagnosis in the New York Times magazine, which was the inspiration for the Fox medical drama House, M.D. .The show in which Hugh Laurie, playing Dr Gregory House, regularly managed to diagnose the most obscure of medical conditions. But today Lisa has arguably a rather tougher challenge than Hugh Laurie ever faced, she's recently become the Medical Director of Yale's Long Covid Multidisciplinary Care Center.   Long Covid  can affect multiple systems and organs in the body, and finding effective treatments so far has proved extremely difficult. However, Lisa reveals several approaches that it does appear can help at least some patients. She argues that we need to see long covid not as entirely new phenomenon, but in the context of many other post-acute infection syndromes such as ME/CMFS or flu. Controversially,  Lisa suggests that it needed enough doctors to get sick from long covid for the profession to start taking these syndromes more seriously. 4 Essential Skills that All Recruitment Business Owners Need to Be Successful, with Chris Dinaso, Ep #171

The Resilient Recruiter

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 27, 2023 60:48

When you run your own business, you wear many hats and need to be competent across a number of areas. But which skills make the biggest difference to your success?   In this episode, my special guest Chris Dinaso and I discuss the top 4 skills that are absolutely fundamental to building a profitable recruitment business. We also delve into Chris's philosophy of “always doing the right thing” which is key to sustainable, long-term success.   It will come as no surprise that selling skills are crucial for recruitment businesses to grow and succeed in a competitive market. A critical component of this is establishing relationships with potential candidates and clients, which starts with an effective elevator pitch.   Chris will be sharing his best practices for selling and business development in running his own recruitment practice. You will hear how he structures his ‘Million-Dollar Paragraph' and how he effectively reaches out to potential candidates by calling them at their work number.   Chris has been in the recruiting industry for almost three decades and has founded Plumbline Staffing Solutions, a boutique recruitment firm focusing on insurance and general staffing solutions, with offices in Chicago, Illinois, and Austin, Texas.   Episode Outline and Highlights [01:45] Sink or Swim - Chris started his staffing career by being thrown into the deep end [07:30] Why Chris took a career change and how it influenced his way of working as a recruitment business owner. [12:00] “Doing the right thing” is a recruitment business differentiator. [22:38] Chris talks about the challenges of getting his company off the ground.  [33:00] Discussion about Chris' approach to business development.  [43:49] The Million-Dollar Paragraph. [46:30] Why you should consider calling potential candidates at work.   Doing the Right Thing is a Differentiator   Chris shared an interesting principle as a success contributor: his mindset of always doing the right thing. Influenced by his faith and his experience in his ministry, his aim is to always provide a transcendent experience to his candidates and clients. As he explained, “I want every interaction I have with clients and candidates, I want that to extend beyond just the limits of ordinary experience.”   We discussed the perspective of having integrity, building character, and treating people right in the world of recruiting should be a basic expectation. However, Chris is regular told that he's different from other recruiters. Chris finds this surprising because, in his view, he didn't do anything special - he just did the right thing. Which suggests that unfortunately many people don't have a positive experience of dealing with recruiters.   Although Chris' reason for doing the right thing isn't money motivated, the outcome is that it is good for business. I am sure this will resonate with a lot of our listeners - if there is one differentiator for successful recruiters or business owners, it will always come down to how they have treated their clients and candidates.    The Best Way to Sell is to Not Sell   A key strength of Chris is his selling skills, which is one of the reasons he got into the recruiting business way back in 1995. When I asked him about business development, his no-nonsense approach is to sell by not selling. You will hear how Chris starts his conversation with potential clients and candidates, focused on building trust and with the intention of building relationships. I find it really interesting, as customers just don't respond to a hard sell approach. Coming across too aggressive can backfire. Here are the two things that Chris and I discussed on this topic:   Structuring and positioning Chris' “Million-Dollar” elevator pitch. Controversially, why Chris believes you should call candidates at their work number.   Four Essential Skills for Starting and Scaling a Recruitment Business   Chris was a successful salesperson and manager prior to setting up his own recruitment firm. I was keen to understand how he applied those skills to grow his own business. “When you start a business, you have to learn how to do everything,” was how Chirs described it.   If you are a recruiter listening and aiming to start your own business, these are four must-haves skills that Chris shared:   Selling skills Copywriting Financial Management Training & Coaching   To understand why those four skills in particular are the most important, be sure to listen to the full episode.   Our Sponsors   This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro and Recruitment Entrepreneur.   i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. Fellow COA Josh Connolly is a Nacoa ambassador, Resilience Coach and a general all round fabulous human being. It was such a treat to talk to him and this conversation is full of such good stuff. Josh tells us about discovering that COA is a thing and we go on to talk about the many ways us COAs are affected by our parents' drinking and none of them are actually the alcohol. As Josh says in our chat, if we are able to dive deep enough it all makes sense and allows us to have great self-compassion for ourselves. This is transformative stuff. COAs experience trauma and yes that trauma has an impact but what has the greatest impact is that the very people who were supposed to make us feel safe and loved in all our emotions weren't able to do that and so we grow up not feeling lovable in all our emotions. We also talk about the part our sensitivity plays in our experience. Controversially, as it turns out, I talk about the freedom I found from being estranged from my alcoholic mother and her subsequent passing away. It was my ultimate act of survival, not that I realised that at the time. The Iowa basketball team fell to Rutgers on the road last night in one of the ugliest games I have seen in quite some time. The Iowa Hawkeyes offense couldn't muster anything, but a surprisingly strong defensive effort kept them in the game, We break it all down here,We also give a preview of Saturday's game vs Penn State before talking about Drew Tate. Dr. Tim Noakes is a South African scientist and an emeritus professor in the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town. He is also a member of the National Research Foundation (South Africa), which lists him as one of their highest-rated members. He has run more than 70 marathons and ultramarathons and is the author of several books on exercise and diet. He is known for his work in sports science and for his support of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diet, as set out in his books The Real Meal Revolution and Lore of Nutrition: Challenging Conventional Dietary Beliefs. Noakes is an advocate of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, often referred to in South Africa as the "Noakes" or "Banting" diet. Noakes has characterized mainstream dietary advice as "genocide". In February 2014 a registered dietician complained to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) that Noakes tweeted to a mother that she should wean her baby onto low-carbohydrate, high-fat foods, which he described as real foods. The HPCSA held a hearing about the allegation against Noakes over the next few years. Controversially, on 28 October 2016, the HPSCA incorrectly released a statement announcing that Noakes had been found guilty of misconduct. In a second press release issued over three hours later, the HPSCA apologized for the mistake. Noakes was cleared of misconduct in April 2017. The HPSCA lost its appeal in June 2018. Noakes co-wrote the 2017 book Lore of Nutrition with journalist Marika Sboros. In it, Noakes describes his Damascene conversion to low-carbohydrate dieting, explores how the lipid hypothesis is the "biggest mistake in modern medicine" and details his struggles with the medical establishment. Noakes has written several books detailing his research in sports science and nutrition. A selected bibliography is given below. Lore of Running (1986) Running Injuries: How to Prevent and Overcome Them (1990) Bob Woolmer's Art and Science of Cricket (2008) Challenging Beliefs: Memoirs of a Career (2012) Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of Overhydration in Endurance Sports (2012) The Real Meal Revolution (2014) Raising Superheroes (2015) Lore of Nutrition: Challenging Conventional Dietary Beliefs, with Marika Sboros (2017) Real Food On Trial: How the diet dictators tried to destroy a top scientist, with Marika Sboros (2019) Today's Episode Dr. Noakes shares his Personal/Professional Story We talk about the Banting Diet Changing one person, one meal at a time Why we need to work on changing doctors Dr. Noakes discusses his legal battle We discuss how research can be biased and manipulated Food Addiction as a legitimate diagnosis How to find accurate information Nutritional science and why it needs to change He answers our question about Volume addiction Signature Question FOLLOW DR. Location: Squadcast Date: Monday 31st August Company: INX, Casa, Blockstream Role: Executive Managing Director, CTO, Chief Strategy Officer Last week INX launched their token offering, a first of its kind,  a security token approved by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.  INX is a trading platform bringing regulated and digital asset opportunities to institutions and retail investors. Their token offering allows investors to gain pro rata distributions from the companies cumulative adjusted operating cash flow. Controversially the token was launched on the Ethereum blockchain. The project already has its detractors and critics, with the advisory board catching direct criticism with accusations of hypocrisy, specifically Jameson Lopp and Samson Mow. While many Bitcoiners have expressed their opinions against the project, others have thrown their support behind it, believing that INX is a legitimate use of a token. In this interview, I talk to Alan Silbert, Jameson Lopp and Samson Mow about the launch of INX. We discuss why they chose to tokenise on Ethereum, what makes something a shitcoin and the key criticisms directed towards them.
