God Of Wonders, Soul On Fire, I Need A Miracle...do any of those phrases sound familiar to you? If they don't, let us give you a hint: they're all song titles. Third Day is one of those bands in the Christian world that defined the sound of a generation, and in today's episode, we have the pleasure of chatting with Third Day co-founder and lead singer, Mac Powell. He's also a husband and a father to five kids, and when we asked him for his biggest piece of parenting advice, he said, "Realize that you were made for this." We walk through topics like how to be present with your kids when life and business get in the way, what it's like to love your teenage kids even (especially?) when they think you're lame, and many more mines of wisdom Mac has to share. Just like Mac said, as parents, we're never gonna completely figure it out, but we can't let that stop us from trying to figure it out.   Go see Mac on tour!  This week's Deadpod features the second set from January 18, 1979 at Providence Rhode Island.  This is a rather unique second set as there is no drums/space segment here, unique since the band started introducing them as a matter of course back in the spring of 1978. It would be the last show without one for a long time. It's a solid show, in my opinion, the highlight being a raucous 'Trucking' that even includes Phil singing, and a solid 'Other One'.  Hope you enjoy it.. Today we bring you another audio drama to listen to while we work on season two of Alpha 8. And it's perfect for the Holiday season. I Need a Miracle.  In this unique series, each episode unfolds like a prayer, revealing stories where some wishes are granted while others have the power to upend the world.  Each episode of I Need A Miracle is a monologue. A new character every episode. Never the same character twice. Always addressing a plea to a listening deity – which never makes a sound. Each episode, each prayer, is a single desperate moment of a life in another world. A world undeniably shaped by the divine. The voices we hear know an omnipotent being is listening. They know not all pleas are granted – but some are. And they believe in the benevolence of their god. Desperation and calculation, need and desire render each new character in vivid shades. And episode by episode, a miraculous yet tumultuous world is assembled in glimpses.  Here is the first episode of I Need a Miracle - A Dream Come True.   Happy listening! This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance at the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, NC on October 10, 1989. A good example, I think, of why this was a high water mark in the band's performance history, this second set showcases their ability to improvise both in spots intended and unintended.  The latter I think, is shown in the opening 'Blow Away', which despite some forgotten lyrics and miscues turns into a fine opening number. The jamming in the 'Help>Slip>Frank', especially out of Franklins' and into a fine drums, is an example of some more expected, but nevertheless, successful creativity. Lastly I have to point out how good 'Not Fade Away is here.. far from being mailed in...   Grateful Dead Charlotte Coliseum Charlotte, NC 10/22/1989 - Sunday Two      Blow Away [10:00] Samson And Delilah [6:20] Help On The Way [3:44] > Slipknot! This week's Deadpod takes us back to Irvine California for the second set of the show from April 23, 1988. This second set is well-executed, tight yet containing several delightful spacey interludes. The opening 'Playin In the Band', while short, is quite interesting and gives way to an excellent 'Crazy Fingers'. That leads into 'Uncle John's Band', afterwards the band goes into a rather extended Drums and Space, whcih are quite high powered and interesting.  Post-Drums highlights include a powerful 'Going Down the Road' and an  excellent 'Dear Mr. Fantasy> Hey Jude reprise'. Jerry's ballad slot gives us a sweet 'Stella Blue' and they close the set with a nice 'Lovelight'. A spacey 'Playin' In the Band' follows - with some extraterrestrial exploration before going into a lovely 'Crazy Fingers'. 'Uncle John's Band' caps off the pre-drums set. The post-drums is highlighted by a truly wonderful 'Morning Dew'.. there was an issue with Jerry's sound at the end but that really doesn't detract from what is a great version.  The boys then surprise the crowd with a double encore -'Johnny B. This week's Deadpod features a fine second set from the band's performance on April 15, 1988 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois.  The band is tight throughout on this night, starting from the opening Bucket, which goes into a very nice 'Crazy Fingers'. Garcia gives a lovely solo here, and it sets the mood for a reflective 'Looks Like Rain' which follows and on which Weir provides a lovely rendition. 'Terrapin Station' follows, and the boys rev this one up as that train pulls into the station! Drums and Space follows (probably with a bit of a cut somewhere here), followed by a slinkly 'Other One'. Bobby follows that with 'I Need a Miracle' which seems a bit out of place but Brent follows with the 'Dear Mr. Fantasy>Hey Jude' combo which was performed quite often during this period. The 'Lovelight' that follows is a perfect counter coming out of that.  Jerry gives the crowd a wonderful encore with 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' to close the evening.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Grateful Dead Rosemont Horizon Chicago , IL 4/15/1988 - Friday Two     Hell In A Bucket [6:28] > Crazy Fingers [8:05] > Looks Like Rain [8:28] > Terrapin Station [11:31] > Drums [2:15#] > Space [#7:13]> The Other One [5:01] > I Need A Miracle [3:19] > Dear Mr. Fantasy [4:28] > Hey Jude [2:05] > Turn On Your Love Light [5:11] Encore     Knockin' On Heaven's Door [7:37]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042823.mp3  Thanks for your kind support.

Hey Now, this week we'll play the second set from the band's performance on April 7, 1987 at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.  'Box of Rain' is the opener here, a rather unusual choice. A short 'I Need a Miracle' follows into 'Bertha'. 'Ship of Fools' slows things down, but they then go into another crowd favorite, 'Man Smart, Women Smarter' before going into a fairly lengthy drums and Space.  Out of Space, they bridge into 'Gimme Some Lovin' which then segues nicely into a fine 'Morning Dew'. A nice 'Throwing Stones' > 'Not Fade Away' combo closes the set but the band returns for a pleasing rendition of 'The Mighty Quinn'.   Grateful Dead Brendan Byrne Arena East Rutherford , NJ 4/7/1987 - Tuesday Two     Box Of Rain [5:08] I Need A Miracle [3:20] > Bertha [6:23] Ship Of Fools [8:03] Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [7:21] > Drums [10:31] > Space [11:#03] > Gimme Some Lovin' [4:46] > Morning Dew [10:43] > Throwing Stones [8:52] > Not Fade Away [5:02] Encore     The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) [4:21]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041423.mp3  "Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine...  Here's the second set from the band's performance at Autzen Stadium in Eugene on June 23, 1990.  A rather slow and dreamy 'Eyes of the World' leads us into a great 'Looks Like Rain', Bobby really does it justice here. 'Crazy Fingers' follows and while Jerry's voice is a bit craggy here its still, for me, a pleasure to hear. The band busts it out on the following 'Playin' In the Band' which opens up beautifully into 'Uncle John's Band', then returns for a full-blown 'Playin' Reprise'.  'The Wheel' flows out of space, then after a rocking 'Miracle', Jerry commands us with a powerful 'Morning Dew'.  Being Saturday the obligatory "One More Saturday Night' gets the crowd spinning as the band heads for the exits..    Grateful Dead Autzen Stadium - University of Oregon Eugene, OR 6/23/1990 - Saturday Two Eyes Of The World [15:24] > Looks Like Rain [8:35] > Crazy Fingers [8:24] > Playing In The Band [10:57] > Uncle John's Band % [9:02] > Playing Reprise [2:11] > Drums [8:03] > Space [9:18] > The Wheel [5:32] > I Need A Miracle [5:25] > Morning Dew [10:50] Encore     One More Saturday Night [4:59]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod070822.mp3  Thank you for your kind support, and keep a light in your heart during these dark days.

This week's Deadpod features the second set from February 17, 1979 in Oakland California.  This is a fine set, almost two hours long, and features some excellent improvisational jamming, as well as the return of some music into the rotation and the last time one song would be played.  Might as Well opens th ing sup, then a great 'I Need a Miracle>Bertha>Good Lovin' combo. Garcia is n particularly good form on the Bertha, and Bob and Donna do a splendid job on the vocals on 'Good Lovin'.  We then get the last 'From the Heart of Me' as this night marks Keith and Donna's last show with the band. A nice 'Big Railroad Blues' makes its first appearance since the Winterland shows in 1974. We then get a exploratory 'Terrapin' into a long 'Playin in The Band' before they go into drums.  'The Wheel' is especially fine coming out of Drums and that is followed by a mellow 'Shakedown Street' marking Keith's last real contribution to the sound. The 'Playin' reprise that follows is quite long for that segment and leads into a nice 'Sugar Magnolia'  The 'One More Saturday Night' encore marks the last Donna wail...     Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 2/17/79 - Saturday Two     Might As Well [4:26] ; I Need A Miracle [4:53] > Bertha [7:04] > Good Lovin' [6:38] ; From The Heart Of Me [3:26] ; Big Railroad Blues [4:29] ; Terrapin Station [12:#01] > Playing In The Band [15:13] > Drums [6:37#] > The Wheel [6:42] ; Shakedown Street [12:19] > Playing In The Band [8:14] > Sugar Magnolia [9:10]   Encore     One More Saturday Night [4:41]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030422.mp3 May the four winds blow you safely home..  thanks my friends

We continue this week with the second set from the band's performance on January 11, 1979 at the Nassau Coliseum.  They come out smoking with a hot version of 'I Need a Miracle'; Bobby is pretty amped up here and there is some very nice guitar work in this version. Ship follows and slows things down a bit, but the Estimated that follows gets things in the groove again, and leads into a long 'He's Gone'. Here the tempo slows down again, but still has some nice moment. Drums leads into a very short space, then a nice 'Truckin' which goes into a short 'Other One'. The highlight of the set, perhaps, is the long 'Stella Blue' that follows, and here Jerry hits the mood just exactly perfectly. 'Good Lovin' gets the crowd back up and a fine 'Casey Jones' ends the evening and sends everyone home smiling.     Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 1/11/79 - Thursday Two     I Need A Miracle [10:39] ; Ship Of Fools [8:24] ; Estimated Prophet [13:02] > He's Gone [16:42] > Drums [10:#25] > Space [2:31] > Truckin' [9:39] > The Other One [5:48] > Stella Blue [12:11] > Good Lovin' [6:33] Encore     Casey Jones [5:30]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011422.mp3  Hope this finds you well, warm and happy!  thanks for your kind support.

What a great Scarlet>Fire on this week's Deadpod!  This comes to us from the second set of the band's performance at Madison Square Gardin on October 14, 1994.  This opening Scarlet>Fire is clearly the highlight of the show, clocking in at over 30 minutes of intensive, improvisational joy. You probably won't believe that they could hit on all cylinders like this at this point of the band's history but just sit back and enjoy. I am particularly impressed by the pace of the arrangement and how they don't take a breath through this.. amazing. You can hear some of the loud, standing ovation the crowd sent back after the end of Fire.. The rest of the set for the most part is no slouch either. I enjoyed Bobby's 'Look Like Rain' and while 'Samba' is one I'd rather skip, I am happy to include 'Corrina' which features a nice jam into Drums and Space. 'Attics' always provides an emotional hit, and while we can hear how far Jerry has aged here and in the 'Liberty' encore, I feel this one is well worth hearing. I hope you do too.    Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 10/14/94 - Friday Two     Scarlet Begonias [9:14] > Fire On The Mountain [22:03] ; Looks Like Rain [8:05] ; Samba In The Rain [6:51] ; Corrina [17:02] > Drums > Space [17:18] > I Need A Miracle [5:16] > Attics Of My Life [5:23] > Turn On Your Love Light [5:43] Encore     Liberty [5:45]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod101521.mp3  Thank you for listening.

This week we feature the second set from a fine late '89 Grateful Dead show - from the Great Western Forum on Sunday, December 10, 1989.  In my opinion the meat of this set comes right out of the gate with a exquisite 'Jack Straw' followed by a wonderful, driven 'China Cat Sunflower'. The 'I Know You Rider' is no slouch either and the combo is, in my opinion the highlight of this set. The always-fun 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' leads into a rather lengthy Drums and Space. The 'Wheel' comes out of space, but it lacks the spark of some versions. 'I Need a Miracle' follows and despite some hiccups, Jerry brings out 'Stella Blue' and does a respectable version here. 'Good Lovin' closes the set with the crowd on their feet, and the boys leave us with an excellent 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' to close out the evening.    Grateful Dead 1989-12-10 Great Western Forum - Inglewood, CA - Sunday Two     Jack Straw [5:31] > China Cat Sunflower [6:52] > I Know You Rider [7:05] % Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [8:31] > Drums [12:20] > Space [7:21] > The Wheel [5:16] > I Need A Miracle [4:53] > Stella Blue [9:07] > Good Lovin' [7:00] Encore     It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [6:09#]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042420.mp3   Don't forget to follow us on facebook - there I post the info on events such as the Dead's 'Shakedown Street' series of live concerts on Nugs net on Friday night and this week,  Dead & Co. from CitiField with Meyer on the Wolf...    be safe and take care of yourselves and others..    thanks for being here

This week's Deadpod features the second set of the band's 'From Egypt With Love' performances at Winterland on October 18, 1978. This is an interesting set, it starts out rather slow, with a less than inspired 'Bertha'>'Good Lovin'. If you're a fan, Donna Jean's 'From the Heart of Me' follows.. I rather enjoy it, but it may be an acquired taste. 'Ship of Fools' follows, then the pre-drums highlight 'Samson and Delilah'. 'Terrapin Station' follows, but Jerry blows the lyrics and does an extended solo. An excellent 'Playin' In the Band' leads into a Drums and Space marked by the guest appearance of Lee Oskar, which gives it an unusual flavor. The jam into the 'Wharf Rat' that follows is exceptional however, as is the Rat, one of the best of the period. A very unusual set-closing 'Truckin' follows, quite well played. They return for an equally unusual 'I Need a Miracle' encore, a song that really fit well in that spot...   Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 10/18/78 - Wednesday   Two     Bertha [7:13] > Good Lovin' [6:05] ; From The Heart Of Me [3:48] ; Ship Of Fools [6:36] ; Samson And Delilah [8:19] ; Terrapin Station [12:06] > Playing In The Band [10:#49] > Drums (1) [9:30] > Space (1) [5:58] > Wharf Rat [11:#33] > Truckin' [11:21] Encore     I Need A Miracle [4:20#] Comments     (1) with Lee Oskar on harmonica, appears at 4:48 into drums.   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102519.mp3    Have a safe and happy Halloween!!   The Deadpod exists due to the kindness of those good folk who support it. This week's Deadpod features a *monster* Scarlet>Fire from the second set of the band's performance on September 1st, 1979 in Rochester New  York. But first, take a moment to appreciate the unusual intro from Bobby to this second set :) This Scarlet>Fire is one of those rather underappreciated jams that can stand comparison to the best of  '73 or '74 Dead. Enjoy the places Garcia takes you as he weaves his magic on this ride. This one takes the entire pre-drums portion of the show. Following the rather short drums>Space, Garcia gives us a fine 'Wharf Rat', then the band settles into a rocking groove, with Miracle, 'Bertha', and 'Good Lovin' to close out the set. This week we can forget our troubles with a fine second set from this early 1979 date in Kansas City. Scarlet starts a little slow, and Jerry's voice cracks a bit here and there, but he really starts soaring around the 3:30 mark. Around the 6:00 minute mark the calypso beat moves in, Donna's background vocals add just enough mystery not to be overpowering, and we float along waiting for the other shoe to drop. Eventually Jerry's notes flutter in like a bee, as the rhythm intensifies; a beautiful transition into 'Fire'. Again, while Jerry's voice is a bit strained, his playing is is unhurried, yet searing.. uplifting. Once you hear these two, you know you're in for a great musical moment. 'From the Heart Of Me' brings us back to Shakedown Street, and  in perspective, we're reminded of what was lost when Donna and Keith left the band. Excellent Jerry solo around the 4:00 min mark of the first one, all around a nice, unhurried jam, the boys spread their wings and you feel the music as it lets them glide into 'Eyes of the World'. Here the soundboard tape is patches with an audience source but there is little loss of fidelity. There's a marvelous, somewhat dark and forboding jam following Drums and a short but interesting Other One. The double encore with a 'Miracle' closer, sure seems to indicate they were having fun that night!     Grateful Dead Soldier's And Sailors Memorial Hall Kansas City, KS 2/10/79 - Saturday Two Scarlet Begonias [12:33] > Fire On The Mountain [10:37] ; From The Heart Of Me [3:31] ; Estimated Prophet [11:51] > Eyes Of The World [11:13] > Space [1:37] > Drums [6:30#] > Space [13:38] > The Other One [6:46] > Wharf Rat [9:57] > Sugar Magnolia [8:16] Encore One More Saturday Night [4:47] ; I Need A Miracle [6:13]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod020819.mp3   May the music bring you joy and peace.   thanks so much for your kind support.

This week's Deadpod continues with the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance on January 10th, 1979 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale NY. This is a fine set packed with lots of great music.  A tight Shakedown Street opens the set, but the Miracle that follows is better than usual. Bertha goes into Good Lovin, then they follow with a rare Dark Star.. They played it 3 times during a 20 day period here then put it away for another seven  years. While this one is only one verse, there is some great exploration that follows in Drums and Space. Wharf Rat is always a pleasure, and a power Saint Stephen never failed to deliver. They close a nice set with two from Chuck Berry,  Around and Around and the Johnny B. Goode encore.        Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 1/10/79 - Wednesday   Two   Shakedown Street [13:23] ; I Need A Miracle [5:38] > Bertha [6:51] > Good Lovin' [7:15] ; Dark Star [18:30] > Drums [8:#20] > Space [5:35] > Wharf Rat [10:32] > Saint Stephen [7:23] > Around And Around [7:46] Encore Johnny B. March will come in like a lion for us with the second set from the band's performance at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles CA from February 11th, 1989. We are treated right off to a superb China>Rider, with a very nice jam into Rider. I love hearing Brett here.. what better song to bring in March than 'I Know You Rider'? and Jerry sells that 'northbound train' line :) . 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' follows - that bouncy tune always got everyone dancing! 'Standing on the Moon' follows, certainly not in the slot we might expect it, but this is only its 3rd performance, but one of the best.. also probably the main reason I wanted to play this set.. a nice, stretched out 'Estimated Prophet' follows.. they then travel to Space, but  Brent brings out 'I Will Take You Home' first, which always pulls at my heartstrings.. a very interesting drums follows, with Bill and Mickey being joined by Airto Moreira, Diana Moreira, and Flora Purim for some very spacey African sounding vocal stylings. The guests leave for Space, but Airto returns for 'Eyes of the World'. The post-drums is quite long by later-day standards, as Eyes finds a unique closing jam to lead into 'I Need A Miracle' then a soulful 'Black Peter' goes into a rousing 'Lovelight' to end the set. The crowd is treated to Phil bringing out the 'Box of Rain' for the encore to end a truly classic set.   Grateful Dead Great Western Forum Inglewood, CA 2/11/89 - Saturday Two China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider>; Man Smart (Woman Smarter) ; Standing On The Moon ; Estimated Prophet >; I Will Take You Home>; Drums* >; Space >; Eyes Of The World** >; I Need A Miracle >; Black Peter >; Turn On Your Love Light Encore Box Of Rain Comments * with Airto and Diana Moreira, Flora Purim; ** with Airto Moreira   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030218.mp3     'thoughts and prayers are not enough'   Thanks for your support of the Deadpod my friends.

Well in some ways I guess this one is appropriate this week....   The second set from Nov. 8th, 1985 has some great highs and some lows. It starts with a version of 'Revolution' with some nice jams but Garcias stepping all over the lyrics ;) Estimated Prophet follows with an excellent jam, especially as it goes into a less than stellar 'Eyes of the World'. Drums and Space follow and then a nice 'Other One' into a short 'I Need A Miracle'. The highlight of the set, if not the show follows, with a wonderful version of Dylan's 'She Belongs To Me'. They close the set with a spirited 'Sugar Magnolia' and return for an encore of the Stone's 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction'..   Grateful Dead Community War Memorial Auditorium Rochester, NY  11/8/85 - Friday    Two    Revolution ; Estimated Prophet -> Eyes Of The World -> Drums -> Space -> The Other One -> I Need A Miracle -> She Belongs To Me -> Sugar Magnolia Encore (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111116.mp3   My sincere thanks to the kind folks whose support allows me to keep publishing the Deadpod!!   Be Strong and love one another!

Happy Valentines' Day Weekend! This week's second set from Lake Placid New York, October 17th, 1983 should bring a warm smile to any lover's heart as it contains a really wonderful 'To Lay Me Down'.. one of the most romantic of all Garcia's songs. Of course I don't want to minimize the enjoyment the remainder of this set will bring you. They start off with 'Touch', then move into 'Samson and Delilah'.. then the aforesaid 'To Lay Me Down' starts a nice combination as it rolls into 'Man Smart (Woman Smarter)' and Terrapin Station pre-Drums. Following Space, we get a fine version of 'The Wheel', a rocking 'Miracle' then they 'Go Down the Road Feelin' Bad' into a set-closing 'Good Lovin' That one features some interesting improvisation by Bobby.. listen for it.. They return for an unusual 'Revolution' encore to finish their one and only trip to the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid..   Grateful Dead Olympic Arena Lake Placid, NY 10/17/83 - Monday Two Touch Of Grey [6:24] ; Samson And Delilah [8:48] ; To Lay Me Down [8:55] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [7:05] ; Terrapin Station [11:20#] > Drums > Space [11:05] > The Wheel [6:49] > I Need A Miracle [4:32] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:05] > Good Lovin' [7:38]   Encore  Revolution [5:08]       You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod021216.mp3   The Deadpod is made possible through the kind support of my listeners.  thank you!    Have a warm and loving week!!

Here we are on what would have been Jerry Garcia's 72nd birthday.. whew .. hard to imagine how much music he would have produced had he stuck around these last 19 years. We get to share what we have, and this week that is the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on July 15th, 1988. We start out with a great choice for a summer night, Scarlet->Fire... the transition is perhaps not as long as some, but there's plenty of energy here.. that energy builds with a rockin' Man Smart, Woman Smarter.. Ship of Fools follows and slows the tempo down but the band goes into Estimated->Drums->Space->Miracle which are all quite well played. The Wheel follows and then Brent leads the band into an excellent Gimme Some Lovin'. Jerry closes the set with a charged Morning Dew.. The lowpoint of the set is the encore, where Bobby is quite off key but well, no one is perfect right?     Grateful Dead Greek Theater Univ of California Berkeley CA 7/15/88 set 2 Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain ; Man Smart, Woman Smarter ; Ship of Fools ; Estimated Prophet > Drums > Space > I Need A Miracle > The Wheel > Gimme Some Lovin' > Morning Dew EncoreTurn On Your Love Light   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080114.mp3   Thanks for picking us up and listening this week. This week we go back 26 years for a fine second set from the Fall of 1987 - this again from the Henry Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, this second set has a unique 'Uncle John's Band' opener.. and in fact a very tasty set list. They then move into a nicely jammed out version of Playin' In the Band.. we then make a stop at Terrapin Station - I believe they some interesting explorations in that jam after the song and heading into Drums.. they lead out into 'I Need A Miracle' but what may be the highlight for me is the Black Peter that follows. Jerry's voice is still in fine form and he does a great job on this one. The set ends with a standard but well played Throwin' Stones->Not Fade Away.. The boys seem to think their night is over after the 'Knockin' encore but the crowd will have none of it and calls them back for a second encore, 'One More Saturday Night'... Grateful Dead Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center Oakland, CA 11/7/87 - Saturday set 2 Uncle John's Band [7:28] > Playing In The Band [9:11] > Terrapin Station [13:23] > Drums [8:58] > Space [6:46] > I Need A Miracle [3:33] > Black Peter [8:15] > Throwing Stones [9:07] > Not Fade Away [8:37] Encore  Not Fade Away [0:56] > Knockin' On Heaven's Door [8:20] ; One More Saturday Night [4:56] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod110813.mp3 I hope you enjoy this week's show, and my most sincere thanks to those of you who have contributed to the Deadpod, without whom it would not be possible. This week's Deadpod features the 2nd set from the performance that took place on September 11th, 1990 at the Spectrum in Philladelphia PA. This was the first performance of "He's Gone" since Brent had passed, and I really feel that the emotion for both band and audience alike comes through on the music. The 'Spoonful' that follows surely was a deliberate pick and is also fairly heavy with emotion.. an interesting and unique jam follows.. after Drumz, the highlights for me are a well performed 'Black Peter' and the encore, which was 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door'.. While this show may not be of the caliber of some of the MSG shows that followed, I think it was clearly the best show the band played prior to the arrival of Bruce Hornsby later in the month.. One word of warning, this version of the show contains two different sources, an audience and the soundboard. The audience provides the source for songs and passages missing on the soundboard tape.. still I thought it was quite worth the listen, and hope you do as well. This week's second set from 1/15/79 is a really classic show for the end of the Keith and Donna era... It starts with an unusual but very successful sequeway - from the I Need A Miracle opener into Shakedown Street.. very powerful and it works seemlessly.. I'm also a fan of the Terrapin Station->Playin' In The Band combo that follows, as I really enjoy a powerful live Terrapin.. While this may be a short second set by some standards the band is clearly on during this show and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do..
