Mag. Bojan Tomc se je odločil, da bo učenje glasnejše od bolezni. Skoraj šestdeset let že živi z neprestanim piskom v ušesih. Pot od finomehanika do magistra znanosti je prehodil ob delu, brez olajšav in brez izgovorov. Ko je prišel do cilja, je energijo usmeril v skupnost. Kljub hudim zdravstvenim preizkušnjam je učenje tesno prepojil z aktivnim državljanstvom. Kot voznik Prostofer pomaga najranljivejšim, hkrati pa z vizionarskimi idejami išče trajnostne rešitve za samooskrbo istrske skupnosti. Bojan ni imel lahke poti. Za Bojana je učenje vedno pomenilo več kot pridobivanje znanja – pomenilo je orodje za premagovanje lastnih omejitev in za aktivno udeležbo v skupnosti. Matija Tomc je idejni vodja, producent in fotograf projekta Facing Death - Soočanja s smrtjo. S sodelavci ustvarjajo estetsko dovršene diptihe: dve fotografiji iste osebe, kjer portret živega človeka zre neposredno v svoj posmrtni obraz. Pred desetimi leti je bil še močno vpet v modno fotografijo; italijanska izdaja revije Vogue ga je denimo uvrstila med osem najbolj nadarjenih modnih fotografov. Tam so spodobujali raznolike projekte in med drugim odprli tudi temo post-mortem fotografije. In takrat je počasi pri njem začela zoreti zamisel o sodobnih posmrtnih portretih. Spominja se posmrtnih fotografij svojih prastarih staršev v družinskem albumu. Dobro pa ve, da so takšne podobe iz njih nasploh izginile, ko pokojnikov pred pogrebom nismo več imeli na domu, temveč v mrliških vežicah. Kot je povedal v podkastu, smo s tem premikom smrt izrinili iz skupnosti, s tem pa si tudi otežili proces žalovanja: »Rešili smo higienski vidik, na drugi strani pa zanemarili psihološkega.« Skupaj s Špelo Jambrek sta v teh razmislekov zasnovala projekt Soočanja s smrtjo, pri katerem z ekipo ustvarijo pretresljiv, a estetsko izščiščen diptih osebe, ki zre v svojo posmrtno podobo. Projekt deluje kot mreža koncentričnih krogov, ki povezujejo ustvarjalce, prostovoljce društva Hospic, umirajoče in njihove svojce, strokovnjake, institucije in širšo javnost. Matija poudarja, da umirajoči v projekt vstopajo pri polni zavesti in aktivno sodelujejo pri oblikovanju svoje zadnje podobe. »In na sploh je zanimivo, da v zadnjih dneh pogovori ne tečejo o velikih filozofskih ali religioznih temah, ampak o povsem konkretnih zadevah: kaj bi še radi videli, kaj bi še radi doživeli, katero Netflixovo serijo bi še pogledali, s kom bi še radi preživeli čas.« V svojem delu uporablja estetiko kot vozilo, s katerim težke vsebine približa javnosti na sprejemljiv način.
