In April, 18-year-old Rihan was mistakenly detained by U.S. Immigation and Customs Enforcement. The teen, who lives in Cheshire, Connecticut, spent two weeks in a detention facility in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Today, Rihan is back home and just graduated from Cheshire High. But with his legal status in limbo what's next for a young man with a dream to attend college and an uncertain future in the U.S.? "They have taken everything of mine," Rihan said. "My legal status and everything like that. I don't have anything now to move forward in the future." This hour, we talk with Rihan and his father, Zia. We're using their first names only for their safety and the safety of their family in Afghanistan. We'll also speak with their immigration attorney about the tenuous road ahead for a family whose legal status hangs in the balance. GUESTS: Rihan: Cheshire teen detained for two weeks by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in April, 2026. Zia: Rihan’s father. He served the U.S. Army as an interpreter and cultural advisor during the war in Afghanistan. Samantha Rosenberg: Cheshire Board of Education Chair Lauren C. Petersen: Private practice immigration attorney in New Haven, currently representing Rihan and his family. She’s Founder and Executive Director of Pavillion Immigrant Assistance in Hartford, and she’s also a co-managing attorney for the American Immigrant Legal Clinic in New Haven. Connecticut Public's Patrick Skahill contributed to this episode. Special thanks also to Rihan's uncle Tariq, and family advocate, Dick Harvey.Where We Live is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, TuneIn, Listen Notes, or wherever you get your podcasts. On Friday's show: President Donald Trump has frozen the processing of immigration requests for all Afghans pending a review of security and vetting procedures. Now, many Afghan immigrants, including many in Houston who came to the United States through the appropriate legal channels, are growing increasingly worried about their status. And we learn about a cold front arriving late Saturday that could bring Houston's first freeze of the season early Monday morning. Also this hour: From a State Department policy change involving fonts, to the debut of the world's longest commercial flight route, to In-N-Out Burger doing away with 2025's most annoying outburst, our non-experts consider The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week. And we meet Angolan-born, Houston-based singer Vivalda Ndula, who blends traditional rhythms with Afro-contemporary sounds. But her music does more than entertain. It also confronts inequality, celebrates resilience, and uplifts unheard voices.Watch

Our 150th episode was extremly special to us. Not only did we hit a huge milestone, but we wanted to spend it with our closest podcast friends. We had our Patreons spend the evening discussing recent events and just enjoying some debauchery induced fun. We helped a nice young mand with wedding plans. We took on the subject of why people should vote for Trump or Biden and what are the ramifications of either decision. Trump has a new shoeline which needed attention. Did you know that nearly half of all young men can't find the clitoris? We didn't either, but we dug deep into the social preasures that might be causing that to happen. Great stuff. Great friends. Great times. Exactly what Epsiode 150 needed to be. Thank you to @Ihadtosayitpod @graystaproompof @miketaproom @taproomtab @BeardOfLiberty @blahblahblahfrt and Buttercup for joining u, live on air.

The faces of children being separated from their families at the border have been plastered on the news. What you don’t see are the lawyers on the ground are doing everything they can to help these families. In this report from On The Road at ABA Annual Meeting 2018, host Lee Rawles talks to Kimi Jackson, Maria Woltjen, and Anne Chandler about the common legal issues that are facing immigrants at the border such as family separation. They discuss what makes this such a hot topic in the media, less commonly addressed problems like working with non-biological families, and what the ABA is doing to help. Kimi Jackson is the director of Probar, a south Texas pro bono asylum representation project. Maria Woltjen is the founder and executive director of the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights at the University of Chicago Law School. Anne Chandler is the executive director of Tahirih Justice Center’s Houston office.

Privatized prisons has turned the prison system into a lean, mean, profit making machine. Companies are cutting costs (and corners) at every turn, leaving prisoners in terrible situations, with little to no ability to get outside help. Obama's mandate to rid the nation of privatized prisons helped alleviate that situation, but Jeff Sessions rescinded that, and private prisons are (for now) here to stay. When we tie prison populations to profits, however, companies have incentives to maintain a "client" base they can make money off of. Plus they're able to use the prisoners for cheap labor. Daniel Manville is a professor at Michigan State and directs the Civil Rights Clinic at MSU College of Law. He's the author of Protecting Your Health & Safety: A Litigation Guide for Inmates, as well as the Prisoner's Self-Help Litigation Manuel. He's trying to get word out that all is not well in our prison system, and things need to change. Key Takeaways: [1:05] Jason was excited about privatized prisons when he first heard of them, but the reality of them has left him opposed [5:17] How for profit food vendors have fed inmates maggots, food from trash cans, and smuggled in contraband with no consequences [9:50] Privatized prisons are doing a terrible job protecting inmates who are in danger [14:40] The concept that ignorance of the law is no excuse is no longer applicable because we have so many laws [18:33] Some privatized facilities can make you wait 2 months before you can see a doctor [22:47] Immigation detainment uses privatized prisons, and some of them can stay a long time [26:05] What kind of access the media has to inmates Website: www.Law.MSU.edu
