As part of its Spring economic update, the federal government revealed that it's considering privatizing the country's airports. The Prime Minister says it could free up money to fund other major projects and improve air travel for Canadians. But a number of critics have come out against the idea. One of them is veteran journalist and activist Linda McQuaig, author of ‘The Sport and Prey of Capitalists: How the Rich Are Stealing Canada's Public Wealth'. She joins us to talk about what the government is proposing and how things can go when public infrastructure comes into private hands. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts
This week, we're reflecting on Mental Health Awareness Month. Today, Joe sits down with two mental health professionals to explore the powerful connection between reading, emotional well-being, and community. Split into two thoughtful segments, this episode invites listeners to reflect on how books, libraries, and small daily habits can support healing, growth, and a sense of stability in an often-overwhelming world. In the first segment, Joe is joined by Monica Hobson (aka: @thebookeduptherapist), a therapist and licensed clinical social worker whose work centers on the role of reading in our healing journeys. Together, they explore the idea that distraction isn't avoidance; it's a meaningful part of processing and recovery. They discuss the importance of self-care, how books can act as connectors between people and experiences, and how to quiet the pressure of “what should I read” in favor of what truly serves you. In the second segment, Joe speaks with Dr. Suzan Song, MD, PhD, about the broader impact of reading on both individuals and communities. Their conversation touches on personal and collective agency, building stability in uncertain times, and what Dr. Song wishes more people understood about mental health. She also shares why one of her first priorities in any new place is getting a library card and what that represents beyond just access to books. This episode is an invitation to slow down, reflect, and consider the role stories play in our lives; not just as entertainment, but as tools for connection, understanding, and healing. The Pentagon is seeking to expand protections for military families living in privatized housing who report unsafe or inadequate living conditions. In a legislative proposal sent to Congress earlier this month, the Defense Department called for allowing tenants to report housing issues not just to landlords or their chain of command, but also to Defense Department housing officials, inspectors general and members of Congress. Currently, tenants are not protected from retaliation by the landlord if they report housing problems to an inspector general or a member of Congress. The proposal would expand the channels through which tenants can safely report their housing issues. The Defense Department says the proposal would not require additional funding. Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien sits down with Chinmayi Sharma, an associate professor at Fordham Law School and a contributing editor at Lawfare, to discuss Sharma's forthcoming law review article, “Immigration Enforcement Intermediaries.”They discuss the U.S. federal government's increasingly privatized and automated system of immigration enforcement—which Sharma describes as “a code-based Leviathan—cloaked in the veneer of legal legitimacy yet operating outside traditional democratic channels”—and how private technology vendors entrench their positions within that system. Sharma also walks through a number of proposals for states and other sub-federal entities to counteract these harms to immigrants, society, and the rule of law itself. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Mentor Sessions Ep. 059: The War Behind the War — Iran Conflict's Impact on Geopolitics, Energy, Money & Bitcoin | Simon Dixon & Dave CollumThe Iran conflict isn't just a military story — it's a financial renegotiation between the world's most powerful institutions, and Bitcoin sits at the center of what comes next. Simon Dixon and Professor Dave Collum join Nathan Fitzsimmons to break down the global reset already underway: why the closure of the Strait of Hormuz triggered renegotiations of 50 critical energy and resourceagreements, how 45 years of compounding market overvaluation is unwinding, and what Dubai's quiet rotation from gold into Bitcoin signals about where smart money is moving. This is the framework for understanding 2026 conflict as we shift to a multipolar world— and why the private credit game being over is actually the opening Bitcoin has been waiting for.Blog Link Mentioned by Simon: https://www.simondixon.com/blog/al-qaeda-boss-white-house-911-truth⏱️ Timestamps:00:00 - Iran War Simplest Form: China, BlackRock & JP Morgan Negotiation00:00:50 - Simon Dixon & Dave Collum Full Iran War & Markets Update00:02:43 - 12 Day War Theatrics vs Real Escalations in Strait of Hormuz00:05:23 - Strait of Hormuz Closure: Nuclear Bomb of Global Reset & Commodities00:08:15 - Financial Industrial Complex vs Military Industrial Complex Explained00:12:35 - Trump, Putin, Europe & Forever Wars Strategy00:17:13 - BlackRock Rise: ETFs, Aladdin & Shift from Goldman Sachs00:20:20 - S&P 500 Overvaluation, Nikkei Reset & Market Crash Warning00:22:42 - US Debt Crisis, 10-Year Yields & Money Printing Trap00:27:36 - Fiscal Dominance, Big Print & Coming Recession00:32:25 - Iran-China Leverage & Crashing Oil Prices for Deal00:35:34 - Iran Factions, US Bases Hit & Engineered Middle East Tension00:41:37 - Petrodollar History, Iran-Contra, Saudi & 9/11 Connections00:58:08 - Israel's Future: Weakened, Privatized in Multipolar World01:19:29 - AI Technocracy, Surveillance State & Gaza Model01:37:59 - Dubai Gold Sell-Off to Bitcoin & Self-Custody Boom01:54:54 - Private Credit Collapse, Valley of Death & System Reset02:00:29 - Final Predictions: Multipolar Deal, Bitcoin & Global TransitionAbout Simon DixonX: @SimonDixonTwittYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/ @SimonDixon21 About Dave CollumX: https://x.com/DavidBCollum ⚡ POWERED by Abundant Mines: Fully managed Bitcoin mining. A new survey finds that nearly every service member living in privatized military housing has experienced serious problems in their home and many of those issues go unresolved. The Change the Air Foundation recently launched the Safe Military Housing Survey, one of the most comprehensive efforts yet to collect data the Defense Department has never been able to track accurately. The nonprofit found that three quarters of respondents were dealing with mold and microbial growth, which is extremely hazardous to a person's health. For more, Federal News Network's Anastasia Obis spoke with Erica Thompson, a military spouse and the military families' liaison for the Change the Air Foundation, and Brandon Chappo, director of public policy at the foundation.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
● A new survey finds that nearly every service member living in privatized military housing has experienced serious problems in their home and many of those issues go unresolved. The Change the Air Foundation recently found 97% of service members reported at least one significant problem in their military-provided home, with mold, mildew, and water damage cited most frequently. Out of 3,401 respondents, three-quarters said their family's health had been negatively impacted by their housing conditions, and nearly half said a medical provider had confirmed the connection.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
For decades, service members and their families have been exposed to hazardous conditions and privatized military housing. The Change the Air Foundation recently launched what's probably one of the most comprehensive efforts yet to collect data. The Defense Department has never been able to track accurately what military spouses say. It's a survey created by families, for families. The Defense Department Inspector General has found that the military services are not properly overseeing maintenance of privatized housing units. According to the recent investigation, military housing officials did not correctly perform any of the inspections the watchdog observed inspectors skipped critical safety checks, including making sure windows opened in case of an emergency and ensuring electric outlets were free of electrical hazards. The military housing offices did not have enough staff or equipment to comply with oversight requirements. Federal News Network's Anastasia Obis spoke to Christopher DePerro, Program Director at the inspector general office, about what his team has found.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Congress has overhauled the federal student loan system, including big changes on borrowing caps and loan restrictions. Education experts say this will up the demand for private loans. So, what does that mean for student borrowers?
Many people accumulate their wealth in a bank or a long-term investment, and this may create problems. But there is a different strategy. In this new episode of the Common Sense Financial Podcast, host Brian Skrobonja goes over the Build Banking strategy and how you can consider a different banking paradigm using specially designed life insurance policies that allow you to start banking on yourself. Most people know that banks use other people's money to generate profits. This process is known as Fractional Reserve Banking, which is basically the bank using the spread between interest rates to profit. For banks, it goes a little deeper. Banks can loan out the money they have on deposit to people, and those dollars are then deposited again, which begins the cycle anew. This process acts as a money-printing machine within the economy. Banks aren't currently required to hold any reserves to cover their customer's deposits. The result of Fractional Reserve Banking is the expansion of the money supply which contributes to increased inflation. Silicon Valley Bank recently found itself in trouble and was unable to cover its liabilities leaving depositors to rely on the government to bail them out. It's not realistic to be able to bypass the banking system entirely, but there are ways to take control of how you save and store money with a personal bank-like strategy. Build Banking uses a specially designed whole life insurance policy that's built on the inherent tax-favored nature and unique capabilities of those policies. What makes Build Banking different is the design allows for rapid cash accumulation with uninterrupted tax-free growth, while having access to cash without having to rely on banks or Wall Street, but you have to set aside your preconceptions around life insurance. The challenge is the language around life insurance policies and how most people understand what they are capable of. With traditional banking, you either accumulate money and spend or borrow and then repay it. The Build Banking method offers a different strategy with a specially designed life insurance system that allows you to take back some of the control. Not all policies are the same and loan features can vary greatly, so it's important to work with a professional with experience in this area. The main benefit of the Build Banking strategy is the ability to have your money remain in the policy and continue to grow uninterrupted, while simultaneously using a policy loan from the insurance company for personal use. A business owner has an extra advantage because they can leverage the loan in their business, creating both an internal and external return. This strategy also gives the policy owner a lot of control over how and when the loan is repaid because of the nature of the life insurance policy. There is a lot to say about Argentina and football that we are not saying today. There is a lot about Argentina and football that we are saying today. We're even saying things about saying things about football in Argentina: Christopher Hylland joins me, an English author and educator with a Latin American past and a Norwegian present. His football-centric travel report Tears at La Bombonera is out since 2021, and he has just published a second one, a unique journey to the land where linguistics and football meet. The book is called Dame Bola: A Journey Through the Language of Argentinian Football. First, however, we discuss what is going on in Argentinian politics and football today, under the presidency of Javier Milei who is fulfilling his campaign promises to put a libertarian chainsaw to the Argentinian state and economy. Part of the flurry of reforms was a presidential decree to allow privatization in Argentinian football and turn clubs into limited liability companies, open to investors. This could be a historic change to what a sports, or soccer, club IS in Argentina. (There are some parallels to when Raphael Molter was here and we talked about 50+1 in Germany, and you know from other episodes as well that I really care about the role clubs can play in the community. Although tech platform companies often claim in their advertisements and public relations efforts that they represent the public interest, as private companies, their primary goal is to maximize their own profits. Equating private interests with public interests not only overlooks the issues arising from the increasingly blurred lines between the two but also worsens the damage that conflicts of interest can cause to sustainable public systems. This is the audio portion of one of Tore's most important documentaries covering the history and development of today's massive deep state network. It is a complete and detailed description of how we have been hacked, manipulated and played. Privatized weapons of war are used in conjunction with corporate power, including media, to control a populace forcibly made docile. Dark forces have also intervened in all of our elections. The descriptions, main participants, and goals of this malevolent strategy are now evident. Here is hard, raw research intended to establish facts and truth. The evil we face must be destroyed from the inside. Our very survival depends on it.

US Big Tech corporations are like the feudal landlords of Medieval Europe. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Nicholas Boni, writer, photographer and musician based in Brooklyn, & Cea Weaver, tenant organizer with Housing Justice For All in New York, to discuss Nicholas's recent piece in Jacobin entitled "Social Housing for New York Is on the Table". Then, Sam speaks with John Samuelsen, International President of the Transport Workers Union (TWU), to discuss the prospects of a commuter rail worker strike in Boston, where they've been without a contract for over 200 days. First, Sam runs through updates on the performance of ‘uncommitted' in the Washington primary, the House voting to sort of ban TikTok, questions about more GOP testimony, Trump's legal battles, the House GOP, the Federal Judiciary Committee, US labor action, and aid for Ukraine, before parsing through the recent TikTok “ban” legislation rushed through the House. Nicholas Boni and Cea Weaver then join, diving right into the complete affordability crisis facing New York State, resulting from a lack of existing stable, affordable housing and investment into new permanent, affordable housing projects, and their solution of a Social Housing Development Authority (SHDA), a statewide tenant's rights coalition, funded and supported by the state, that would work to rezone, maintain, rehabilitate, acquire, and construct new affordable housing projects across New York State, relying on a much broader base than existing housing authorities like NYCHA, allowing for them to function on a much broader, and much more effective scale. Expanding on this, Weaver and Boni look at the SHDA as a true public-sector alternative to the speculative role of private real estate, walking through the process and legislation SHDA would rely on in their acquisition of housing and land for maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction, and the role the Authority would play in working with to take over existing housing and establish tenant-run cooperatives. After walking through some real-world lasting examples of this kind of housing infrastructure, Cea and Nicholas wrap up by assessing the current state of the fight, and what to look for moving forward. John Samuelson then joins, walking through the TWU's role representing transit workers across the US, before zooming in on the ongoing issues facing Local-2054, with active profiteering and exploitation from the French company Keolis in their management of Massachusetts' Commuter Rail, all bankrolled by the US taxpayer. After walking through the long battle between the local and Keolis in their ongoing contract negotiations, Samuelson walks through the ongoing exploitation faced by transit mechanics and coach cleaners on the South Side, and the role of the MBTA and Massachusetts DOT in allowing this brutal exploitation. Wrapping up, John Samuelson assesses the future of Local-2054's fight, and what we can do to support them. And in the Fun Half: Sam discusses the future of MR, the bad look for both Merrick Garland and the GOP that is Robert Hur's testimony, and revelations around Trump's active attempt to steal classified documents. Meffi from Texas discusses the dangers of right-wing authoritarian thugs, Sly from Staten Island on the crime-spike myth, and Angela from Alberta explores the progressive factions of Canadian news media. Candace Owens goes on in on the transvestigation of Brigitte Macron, Ken Buck leaves the GOP hanging dry as he kills their House Majority, and A from Washington dives into some context for Brett Weinstein's dishonorable discharge from academia, plus, your calls and IMs! In Episode 7 of the Truth Nation Podcast, Retired California Highway Patrol Chief Mark Garrett and Retired DEA Special Agent in Charge Bill Bodner dive into the topic of Privatized Policing. What is Privatized Policing, and why is it becoming increasingly popular? Did the defund police movement bring us to a place where those with financial means use privatized policing to protect their communities while those with less financial resources are subject to more crime and less protective police services? Are the very same community leaders who called to de-fund the police now complaining about inequalities in police services caused by a reduction in services in poorer neighborhoods combined with private contract services in higher income neighborhoods? Does privatized policing take policing control out of the hands of department leadership and put it into the hands of wealthy community members? Get the truth about Privatized Policing from Truth Nation, Episode 7.
