What do we do when the path ahead feels unclear and fear starts to shape our decisions? In this sermon, Pastor Peter sits with Isaiah 7 and the story of King Ahaz, connecting an ancient moment of uncertainty to the very real questions we carry today. As we reflect on Advent, we're invited to consider what it looks like to trust God's presence when clarity is lacking and the future feels fragile. Through story, scripture, and honest reflection, this message points us toward a deeper hope and reminds us that the light of Christ meets us right where we are, even in our darkest moments.
In a world shaped by fear, division, and self-protection, what does biblical love actually look like?In this Advent message, Choosing Love in a Selfish World, we explore Isaiah's promise of Immanuel—God with us—and discover that God's response to fear is not control or power, but faithful, compassionate presence. Drawing from Scripture, the life of Jesus, and a deeply personal pastoral encounter, this message invites us to see love not as sentiment or comfort, but as courageous presence that refuses to abandon others in vulnerability.Biblical love shows up when answers are unavailable, when fear tempts us to withdraw, and when power feels safer than presence. Advent reminds us that love has already come down—and the question is whether we will choose to live that love now.Scripture: Isaiah 7:10–16 Series: Waking to God's Dream

Isaiah 7:10-17 Pastor Scott Skones
Even in this digital age, we would be lost without signs. Signs warn us of danger. They communicate information to us. Signs help us navigate and let us know when we've reached our destination. The most important signs, however, are the ones that point us to our Savior, so that we can be 100% certain of our salvation. This morning and this week of Christmas, we celebrate that throughout history, God has provided the necessary signs to his people to lead us to the One born to save us.
The hope we have during Advent season (and all the time) is knowing that God is with us. Pastor Micah preaches at King's Cross Church.

12.7.2025 - God Incarnate - The Virgin Shall Have a Son - Isaiah 7:14 by Anacostia River Church
In its fourth line, the Apostles’ Creed states an essential truth, “I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary.” Amid early church heresy and false teachings, the authors of this creed determined this truth to be essential and fundamental to our faith. Why? This week we will spend some time affirming and examining the essential nature of the virgin birth of Christ by looking to an Old Testament prophecy about Christ. We will also examine the fulfillment of this prophecy in Matthew’s gospel. We also have some special guests with us this weekend. One of our longtime missionary partners will be with us as we will have the opportunity to present them with a special gift. It is going to be a special weekend of worship. Make plans today to join us! In Christ, Pastor Chad

In this Advent sermon from Isaiah 7, we are invited to consider one of life's most important questions: Who do you trust? Walking through the story of King Ahaz, we see a man facing real fear, real danger, and a real choice—whether to trust in political power or in the promises of God. Through the prophet Isaiah, God offers Ahaz a sign of His faithfulness: a child named Emmanuel, “God with us.” While Ahaz chose fear over faith, God remained faithful, pointing forward to the greater fulfillment of this promise in Jesus Christ. As we reflect on the birth of Christ, we're reminded that God not only gives signs of His presence—He became present among us. This message gently calls us to place our trust not in worldly security, but in Emmanuel, the Savior who came to deliver us from our deepest need: salvation from sin.
At Christmas, Christians often quote Isaiah 7:14—“the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son”—but few pause to ask what that verse meant for King Ahaz before it pointed to Christ. In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer walks through the political and spiritual crisis facing Judah, the rising Assyrian threat, and Ahaz’s refusal to ask God for a sign. James unpacks why God answered with something that seemed wildly inadequate in the face of war: a child. He explores how this sign functioned as both judgment and hope, how the language of “young woman” and “virgin” works in Hebrew and Greek, and why Matthew is not ripping Isaiah 7:14 out of context when he applies it to Jesus. Along the way, you’ll see how prophetic patterns ripple across Scripture, how our expectations of power clash with God’s humble ways, and how the virgin birth reveals a Savior who comes not with military might, but with a presence that judges and delivers. Perfect for thoughtful Christians wanting to go deeper this Christmas. Subscribe to our YouTube channel
7.1 In the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it. 2 When the house of David was told, “Syria is in league with Ephraim,” the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.3 And the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-jashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer's Field. 4 And say to him, ‘Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and the son of Remaliah. 5 Because Syria, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, 6 “Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and let us conquer it for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” 7 thus says the Lord God:“‘It shall not stand, and it shall not come to pass.8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. And within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered from being a people.9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all.'”10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz: 11 “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted. 17 The Lord will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father's house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah—the king of Assyria!”
When King Ahaz faced the terrifying prospect of war, his heart shook "as the trees of the forest shake before the wind." Desperate for security, he sought political alliances rather than divine promises. But God's answer to national crisis wasn't a military strategy; it was a child, born of a Virgin—Immanuel. In part 1 of a special 12-part series connecting Old Testament prophecy to New Testament fulfillment, listen in as the historical drama of the Syro-Ephraimitic War, Ahaz's false piety, and messianic promise collide. The Rev. Greyson Grenz, associate pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Monroe, MI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, to study Isaiah 7:1-17. To learn more about Trinity Lutheran, visit tlcmonroe.org. This Advent series begins by covering the last Old Testament prophet, Malachi, and then spends twelve episodes alternating between Old Testament prophecy and New Testament fulfillment, tracing God's promises from Isaiah to the birth of Christ. The series explores Emmanuel's promise, the Davidic King, John the Baptist as forerunner, and reaches its climax with the Nativity. The final episodes examine the Suffering Servant, the shadow of the cross in Christ's infancy, Isaiah's Messianic mission statement, and John's declaration that "the Word became flesh." Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Jim Osman expounds Isaiah's prophecy of a virgin bearing a son, revealing God's plan for the Messiah's incarnation. Isaiah 7:14 describes a virgin bearing a son named Immanuel, fulfilled 750 years later when Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit. This virgin bearing a son demonstrates Christ's true humanity united with deity—two distinct natures in one person. Without ceasing to be fully God, the eternal Son became something He had never been: flesh, veiling His glory to dwell among us as the virgin bearing a son, accomplished redemption. ★ Support this podcast ★

Today’s Bible Verse:“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” — Isaiah 7:14 Isaiah 7:14 is one of the Bible’s most searched, quoted, and cherished prophecies — a promise tucked into a tense chapter of political fear and uncertainty. God responds to human anxiety with a person, not a plan. He offers a sign that doesn’t shout power or strategy, but presence: Immanuel, God with us.
