On this episode of Tent Show Radio, legendary Southern Rock band The Ozark Mountain Daredevils perform a career spanning set during their thrilling return to the Big Top stage. One of Southern rock's more inventive exponents, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils have always been indefinable in terms of music genres, producing sounds of country-rock and electric bluegrass all on the same record, writing lyrics both whimsical and poetic, and singing harmonies that send shivers up your spine. The Daredevils were formed in 1971 by the songwriting team of John Dillon, Randle Chowning, Larry Lee, and Steve Cash; with Michael "Supe" Granda and Buddy Brayfield completing the line-up. When the band emerged with their self-titled debut in 1973, they evoked not only the spirit of the age but the place from which they sprang: Springfield, Missouri, and the Ozarks—a place of pop, rock, country, mountain music, and much more. The critically acclaimed record, recorded in London under the direction of producer Glyn Johns, contained the US Top 30 single "If You Wanna Get To Heaven", while a second success, "Jackie Blue', which reached #3, came from the band's follow-up collection, “It'll Shine When It Shines.” Recorded at Randle Chowning's ranch, these records achieved “gold” status and showcased the group's strong harmonies and intuitive musicianship. Following a hiatus, the Daredevils were reactivated in the late 1980's by Dillon, Cash and Granda. The resulting album, “Modern History” found the band with a new lease on life as they carried on into the new millennium with a new line-up featuring Dillon, Cash, Granda, Ron Gremp (drums) and Bill Brown (guitar/vocals). In the years that followed, the Daredevils released a number of major label and independent record label recordings, traveled millions of miles performing throughout North America and Europe, and continued to grow and maintain a loyal and dedicated fan base throughout the world. Now more than 50 years since their founding, their songs are still regularly played on Classic Radio stations. With two of the original co-founders still on board, John Dillon (guitar, mandolin, vocals) & Michael "Supe" Granda (bass, vocals), their current lineup of talented musicians includes Ron Gremp (drums), Ruell Chappell (vocals, percussion), Bill Jones (woodwinds, horns), Dave Painter (lead guitar), Nick Sibley (harmonica, guitar, vocals), Kelly Brown (keyboard), and Molly Healey (fiddle). With their signature sound and style remaining intact and vibrant, they continue to delight Dareheads with their live performances.     EPISODE CREDITSMichael Perry - Host Phillip Anich - Announcer Keenan McIntyre - Engineer Gina Nagro - Marketing Support FOLLOW BIG TOP CHAUTAUQUA https://www.facebook.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.instagram.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.tiktok.com/@bigtopchautauqua https://twitter.com/BigBlueTent FOLLOW HOST MICHAEL PERRYhttps://sneezingcow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sneezingcow https://www.instagram.com/sneezingcow/ https://twitter.com/sneezingcow/ 2024 TENT SHOW RADIO SPONSORSAshland Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.visitashland.com/   Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau - https://www.bayfield.org/   Bayfield County Tourism - https://www.bayfieldcounty.wi.gov/150/Tourism   The Bayfield Inn - https://bayfieldinn.com/   Cable Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.cable4fun.com/   Kylmala Truss - https://www.kylmalatruss.com/  SPECIAL THANKSWisconsin Public Radio - https://www.wpr.org/

Fly By Night is the album where Rush takes its final form.  Original drummer John Rutsey left the group shortly after their eponymously named debut album was released.  Health problems related to diabetes made it difficult for Rutsey on tour.  He was replaced on bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee's 21st birthday by the soon-to-be legendary percussionist, Neil Peart.  Together with guitarist Alex Lifeson, the trio would become icons in the prog rock genre. Most of the material for this album was written while the band was on tour opening for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann.  Rush went into the studios for about 5 days to record the album, which was mixed by January when the group flew to Winnipeg for a concert on January 15th.  Fly By Night would also be the album in which Peart takes over much of the lyrical work with the songs, while Lee and Lifeson compose much of the music.  The lyrical styles are noticeably different between the first and second album, complete with literary themes which reflect Peart's habit as an avid reader. This album is also the one which saw Rush moving in a decidedly prog rock direction.  This could be attributed to Neal "The Professor" Peart's lyrics, but the entire band wanted each song to show a different side to their writing and playing, creating a diversity of styles in the tracks.Friend of the show Sean Mooney stands in for WTR Rush Ambassador, Bruce Fricks to bring us this classic prog rock album.  AnthemThe lead-off track to the album was originally conceived by Lee and Lifeson while Rutsey was still in the band.  The name of the track is from an Ayn Rand novella, as do the lyrics.  Peart's inspiration by Rand would return when the group penned their fourth album, 2112.Beneath, Between and BehindThis is the first song to feature Peart's lyrics.  It was about the discovery of America and the birth of the United States.  The lyrics reference the American dream and growth as well as some darker history like wars and immigration.  "Beneath the noble birth between the proudest words behind the beauty, cracks appear.  Once with heads held high they sand out to the sky why do their shadows bow in fear?"Best I CanOne of two tracks written before Peart joined the band, this song's music and lyrics were both penned by Geddy Lee, and the song saw regular performance during Rush's first North American tour.  The lyrics have a more rock theme than Peart's more literary efforts.  "Don't give me speeches 'cause they're oh so droll.  Leave me alone, let me rock and roll."Fly By NightThe "hit" single from the album leads off side 2, and peaked at number 88 on the Billboard charts.  The lyrics reflect Peart's first trip away from home when he traveled from Canada to England.  "Fly by night, goodbye, my dear.  My ship isn't coming and I just can't pretend." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture The Stepford WivesThis dystopian sci-fi thriller finds a couple in the town to Stepford, where the women mysteriously transform into submissive domesticated housewives. STAFF PICKS:Song for America by Kansas Wayne leads off the staff picks with the single cut to a 10-minute epic paying tribute to America.  It reflects the beauty that can be seen from a jet, but also the ugliness of industrialization.  The 5/4 time interspersed in the song marks it as a prog rock masterpiece.Jackie Blue by Ozark Mountain DaredevilsRob brings us a cool groove about a woman in pursuit of happiness, but who never stays with anything long enough to find happiness.  The original inspiration was a guy they met in Los Angeles who was strung out on drugs.  Drummer Larry Lee takes lead duties for this song which made it to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.#9 Dream by John Lennon Lynch features a song released before he was born from Lennon's "Walls and Bridges" album, which coincidentally went to number 9 on the charts.  The song literally came from a dream Lennon had, with no inspiration.  The "mystery voice" in the background is Lennon's girlfriend at the time, May Pang.  Several of the lyrics are nonsense words.Adam's Apple by Aerosmith Sean finishes the staff picks with a deep cut from Aerosmith.  The lyrics are inspired by the story of the temptation of Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 3.  It appears on Aerosmith's album "Toys in the Attic," which Steve Tyler wanted to name "Love at First Bite" at one point, a line from this song. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Express by BT Express We finish off this week's podcast with in instrumental hit from the early disco era.

“Getting a gender equal world? That’s going to take a lot of culture change, a lot of role reversals—our prime minister and her husband showing the way—where women are valued the same as men, where family violence is eliminated … and really where women are respected, and the fact that you’ve had time out and had children out of the workforce [is] valued as a skillset.” Dr. Jackie Blue is the Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner at the New Zealand Human Rights Commission. She began her career in medicine as a general practitioner and New Zealand’s first breast physician before shifting her focus to politics. Jackie spent eight years as a member of parliament and then moved into her current role as EEO Commissioner. She is committed to progressing human rights and issues of equity, addressing youth unemployment in the Māori and Pacific communities, and advancing the participation of women in society. With eight albums selling over two million records and worldwide hits like "Jackie Blue" and "If You Want To Get To Heaven" the Ozark Mountain Daredevils have come a long way from the Missouri bars and porches where their music was born. It all began for the Daredevils in 1971 when a collection of singer songwriters from the Springfield area put together a band as an outlet for their songwriting. They Played their first gig near the end of 1971 and, in the spring of the following year, went into the studio to make a demo tape. The tape came to the attention of David Anderle at A&M Records, who liked what he heard and passed the tape on to A&M president, Jerry Moss. This resulted in the band signing to A&M with Anderle and Glyn Johns producing, thus the Daredevils were off to London to Make their first album at the famed Olympic Studios. This first album contained the smash hit "If You Wanna Get To Heaven" written by Cash and Dillon, and produced a gold album. The pop"Jackie Blue", written by Cash and Larry Lee, came from the second album "It'll Shine When It Shines", and was a top-five worldwide record. The band has made subsequent albums, and continues to build their audience through records and touring across the U.S. and Canada, performing for their large cult following. The band was described by Rolling Stone Magazine as "A mixture of Country, Appalchia, the south, and Rock & Roll". Michael Granda chats with Slacker.

Oh, the glory of the human voice. And the power of the human mind to hear one’s own voice, and somehow experience it as beautiful when to other’s it’s . . . not. Not Beautiful. Not even good. Which brings us to Florence Foster Jenkins. That’s her we are listening to now, from a recording she made in 1944. Jenkins was, in her time, a famous singer. She once sold out Carnegie Hall, packing the place with people eager to find out if the wacky socialite from Manhatten was really as bad as everyone said she was. The wild thing was, Jenkins was one of the only people who had no idea what she actually sounded like. Was she mistaken, mislead perhaps, mentally ill, or just really, really in love with the idea of being a singer? Those are the questions that are raised in the play Glorious! by Peter Quilter, running through October 18 at Ross Valley Players in Ross, in Marin County. It’s a little ironic that in creating a script that celebrates Florence Foster Jenkins, the playwright has created something as eccentric and strange and unexpectedly sweet as Jenkin’s herself . . . and just as mediocre. In all fairness, there isn’t really much about the Jenkins life from which to build a full story, and this ultra slight, plot-thin comedic farce avoids some of the more interesting things. The result is, well, kind of a one-joke story with no real story. And the running joke about a really old dog does not count as plot. There is charm in the story, certainly. But is charm enough? Glorious! suffers from the same malady that Jenkins did—a woeful insensitivity to tone, pitch, and pacing. And though it makes a herculean effort at turning Jenkins into some kind of self-actualized heroine, it can’t escape the uncomfortable truth that her popularity was, in many way, a deeply cruel joke. In the Ross Valley Players staging—unevenly orchestrated by the usually excellent director Billie Cox—the best thing about the show is the charming, infectiously upbeat performance of Ellen Brooks as Jenkins. She’s delightful. There is also fine additional support by Mitchell Field as Jenkins’ roguish common-law husband St. Clair, a frequently unemployed, alcoholic actor, who depended on his paramour’s money, but seemed genuinely devoted to her and her singing efforts. Also, good, if a little one-note, is Dan Morgan as the accompanist McMoon, whose transition from grudging employee to affectionate friend provides what little there is in the way of plot. As Maria—Jenken’s cranky Mexican maid, Maureen O’Donoghue does a lot with a slight role, but as an affronted music fan attempting to burst Jenkin’s bubble, Jackie Blue is allowed to do far too much with far too little. Apparently intended as the antagonist of the play, she’s far too ridiculous and cartoonish to be taken seriously, even as comic relief. As Jenkins friend supporter Dorothy, Ellen Fisher creates a goofy but affectionate caricature of a devoted friend, who might be even crazier than Jenkins. Through it all, there is an authentic sweetness to the proceedings, but the play is ultimately as lacking in substance and depth as was the infamous singing voice of its hapless subject. Glorious! is diverting and amusing and sometimes funny, but funny in a sad way. Just like Jenkins. ‘Glorious!’ runs Thursday–Sunday through Oct. 18 at Ross Valley Players. Rossvalleyplayers.com
