Put us in, Coach! "Naked Lunch" is thrilled to welcome the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Famer John Fogerty -- who this week received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award, the Songwriters Hall of Fame's highest honor -- along with our mutual buddy Brad Paisley for a great conversation, including a few questions sent from Phil. Brad and David have recently been collaborating on a new liner notes essay for the upcoming "Hall Of Fame" edition of John's classic "Centerfield" solo album. They discuss the impact of John's music with Creedence Clearwater Revival and beyond, baseball, and how "Centerfield" was one of the greatest comebacks of all-time, and started an ongoing revival in John's life and musical legacy. John Fogerty has had a few remakes and tributes to the original CCR material over the years. However, now with more creative freedom in part due to the Creedence Clearwater Revival's publishing rights back in Fogerty's hands, this time he records a true modern day studio tribute to the original material. Which songs are the best ones revisited on this album, you be the judge, in the meantime here I give my take. #ccr #creedenceclearwaterrevival #johnfogerty #legacy #ddclassicrock #rockon #podcast-Spotify Playlist Link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7EEjyb6VrPT6Yg4EQwGeI1?si=AQ1OpLyLQbOzU6kSY0kWSg

In 1969, Creedence Clearwater Revival accomplished the unthinkable: releasing three career-defining albums in a single year. At the heart of this creative explosion was "Green River," a track that reached #2 on the charts and perfectly encapsulated the band's "swamp rock" aesthetic. Let's dive deep into the mastermind of John Fogerty, revealing how he his Rickenbacker and a solid-state Kustom amp to create the raw guitar tone that created an indelible riff. We also look at the locked-in rhythm section of Stu Cook and Doug Clifford and the driving force that Fogerty famously dubbed "chooglin'." Beyond the music, this episode uncovers the nostalgic and sociopolitical layers of the lyrics. While the song evokes the bayous of Louisiana, its true origins lie in Fogerty's childhood memories of Putah Creek in California… and a lime-flavored soda pop. We'll look at how the smoldering world of 1969—marked by the Vietnam War and recent political assassinations—crept into Fogerty's writing, transforming a childhood reminiscence into a plea for a simpler time. Whether you are a recording nerd interested in the studio minutia, or a casual fan of great rock, this episode offers a comprehensive look at a timeless American masterpiece. Send in your music story!A wedding request to Scott Blasey, a brand-new video spinoff we're slightly scared to make, and a lyric game that derails into glorious chaos—this one moves fast and hits a lot. We kick off by revisiting last week's interview, then clip an on-air invite to the Clarks frontman to perform at a future wedding. From there we pivot into real talk about editing choices, how small cuts can smooth a show, and why honesty on the mic matters more than polish. Our music news run is stacked: Fetty Wap's release, BTS returning from military service with a world tour, Slipknot teasing new material, and Hillary Duff's latest single with a side of mom-scene drama. The big legacy story lands hard—John Fogerty reclaiming the CCR songbook and celebrating it with an NPR Tiny Desk performance—opening a wider conversation about artist rights, masters, and what it means to finally own the songs that define you. Along the way, we weave in pop culture and everyday life: a car speaker sacrificed to Billy Joel at max volume, a misdiagnosed turbo that turns out to be a cracked line, and a quitting story punctuated by free celebration donuts. Then we crank up a reimagined lyric challenge, trading “finish the lyric” for smarter prompts that spark memory and laughter. Journey's train, Miley's hands in the air, Queen's silhouettes, and Creed's six feet from the edge all make an appearance, serving up nostalgia with a wink. We even wander into a spirited Helen Keller debate that says more about how stories spread than the story itself. To cap it off, we share community-first merch—DJ ABC tees priced to move—and tease Off The Record, our video-only experiment that feels equal parts exciting and reckless.Hit play for music news, banter, and a game you'll want to steal for your next hangout. Hidy, friends and neighbors. Good to be partnering up with Claude on another podcasting project! This episode is about a song whose title vaguely sounds like the result of a chemical spill, but which is actually a classic piece of rockabilly. John Fogerty and his brother Tom were natives of Northern California, and their family vacations often were to a cabin in Yolo County, just west of Sacramento. That cabin was next to both a lake and a creek, and the Fogerty boys would play in and around that creek during vacations. And yes, you’ve guessed it, the water there did have a greenish tint because of algae and other natural phenomena.  Coincidentally, Green River was John’s favorite flavor of soda pop as well (though I’m not sure I would drink anything with that name these days). Fast forward a few years to the mid 1960s, and John and Tom, along with their buddies Stu Cook and Doug Clifford, are in a local band called the Golliwogs. They picked a new name in January 1968, shortly after they got their record contract, and were thereafter known as Creedence Clearwater Revival. They followed the natural route of local gigs, then national tours, and then record releases. The song titles are familiar: Susie Q, Bad Moon Rising, Born on the Bayou, Proud Mary (which Claude covered on an episode of How Good It Is a while back, and then the song that hearkened back to John’s salad days at that creek in Yolo County.   Give it a listen to see how Roy Orbison rubbed off on the boys from El Cerrito, and how the song fits into the overall CCR legacy. Listen to a conversation with the virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and bandleader, Ricky Skaggs. Born in Kentucky in 1954, Skaggs has played a central role in shaping modern bluegrass and country music. A child prodigy, he first performed on stage with Bill Monroe at age six, and at age seven he appeared on national television with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.  Before turning 18, Skaggs had already performed with many of the greatest legends in bluegrass. At age 15, he and his childhood friend Keith Whitley joined Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys. In the 1970s, Skaggs' musicianship helped redefine progressive bluegrass through his work with the Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe & the New South, and Emmylou Harris' Hot Band. He launched his solo career in the early 1980s and became a leading figure in the neotraditional country movement. His string of #1 hits — including “Crying My Heart Out Over You,” “Highway 40 Blues,” and “Heartbroke” — made him one of the decade's most influential artists. During this period he earned multiple CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year in 1985, as well as several Grammy Awards. In the 1990s, Skaggs returned his focus to bluegrass, forming his acclaimed band Kentucky Thunder. In 2018, Skaggs was inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame—one of the few artists to receive both honors. He is also a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Skaggs has performed and recorded with a wide range of legendary artists across many genres, including Jack White, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Charlie Haden, Bruce Hornsby, Béla Fleck, John Fogerty, and Dionne Warwick, among many others. Across his decades-long career, Ricky Skaggs' contributions as a singer, mandolinist, fiddler, bandleader, and tradition-bearer have secured his legacy as one of the most important figures in American roots music. Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder will present a special Christmas concert at the Brown County Music Center on December 11.

On this episode of Talking Guitars on JohnnyBeaneTV, we opened with a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Steve Cropper, whose family announced his passing today. I share the story of meeting him nearly 30 years ago at the guitar shop I worked at—an unforgettable moment with a true icon. Legendary guitarist Steve Cropper — the soulful force behind Booker T. & the MG's, Otis Redding, and the Blues Brothers — has passed away at the age of 84. His son Cameron confirmed the news to Variety on Wednesday. Cropper's influence on Memphis soul is immeasurable. As a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and engineer at Stax Records, he shaped the sound of an era. His tight, tasteful, unmistakable guitar work powered Booker T. & the MG's, while also elevating recordings by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd, and more. In 1996, Mojo magazine ranked him the second-greatest guitarist of all time, just behind Jimi Hendrix, praising his metronomic timing, razor-sharp riffs, and perfectly placed licks — always serving the song, never overstaying their welcome. As a songwriter, Cropper co-wrote classics like “Green Onions,” “Time Is Tight,” and “Soul-Limbo,” along with timeless R&B hits including Otis Redding's “(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay”, Wilson Pickett's “In the Midnight Hour” and “634-5789,” and Eddie Floyd's “Knock On Wood.” After leaving Stax in 1970, he continued making history. Booker T. & the MG's reunited into the '90s, backing icons like Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Neil Young, and Levon Helm. Cropper also became widely known to new generations as the guitarist for The Blues Brothers, appearing on their platinum records and in both films. In 1992, Steve Cropper was rightfully inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Booker T. & the MG's. Then it's off to the workbench! I swap out the strap pins on my TEASE Telecaster, tighten up some screws on a Squier Tele, and Ron jumps in to show off some killer 3D-printed guitar goodies he's been crafting. And somehow… we wrap the night talking about MASSIVE burgers—PermanI Brothers, local burger joints, and the monster creations Ron hunts down. Guess we were starving! Rock, mods, memories, and monster burgers—classic JohnnyBeaneTV energy.
