Find Claus her: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3l9zYc9aXDwpHzQjkq1ut5?si=6VrgahBCQ9ulgpHsJ3zekQ&nd=1&dlsi=d28dd9d83e2a41d9

Crime Capsule is happy to introduce you to a new Evergreen Podcasts show, Something About the Beatles, from David Whelan. He was a successful documentary writer and producer in the UK when, as COVID hit, he began looking into the murder of John Lennon, prompted by a podcast interview he heard. What he discovered quickly led him into a four-year investigation, as he talked with witnesses who had never before spoken publicly.  About Something About The Beatles All episodes of SATB feature conversations. Sometimes they are with Beatles authorities: writers or academics who've done the research and come up with a thesis. Others are with folks in the business: musicians who were inspired by The Beatles and who've walked the walk – written songs, recorded records, gone on tour. They know the ins and outs of Beatles music. Then there are the Beatle witnesses: folks who knew the individual Beatles well, either by direct family relations (Mike McCartney, Jenny Boyd), working directly for The Beatles (Kevin Harrington, Chris O'Dell, Ken Mansfield, Chris Thomas, Alan Parsons, John Leckie, Tony King, and so forth) or else spending considerable time in their world (journalist Ray Connolly, photographer Ethan Russell, journalist Ivor Davis, photographer Tom Murray, filmmaker Paul Saltzman, Nancy Lee Andrews, May Pang, and so forth). These people come to SATB to share their insights and observations, bringing us that much closer to the world The Beatles created. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Our guest today is the wonderful May Pang, who we're so excited to welcome onto BC the Beatles! May began her career in the music industry at ABKCO and Apple Records before transitioning into being John and Yoko's personal assistant. Three years later, Yoko came to her with a strange request: to be John's lover and companion during a period of their separation. This became his “Lost Weekend” in 1974-1975, in which he and May split time between NYC and LA. May was witness to many of the tall tales that populate the period including John's infamous heckling of the Smothers Brothers at the Troubadour with Harry Nilsson, the recording of John's Rock And Roll album with Phil Spector (and Spector firing a gun in the studio), among many more of John's drunk escapades.  Although they technically broke up in early 1975, May and John continued to see each other through 1978, having their last conversation during Memorial Day weekend in 1980. In 1983, May wrote about her time with John in her book Loving John and in 2022, her story hit the big screen in the documentary feature The Lost Weekend: A Love Story. She's also a photographer whose photos of her time with John are now on tour around the country as well as being featured in the book Instamatic Karma.  Watch The Lost Weekend: A Love Story on Amazon Prime May's upcoming photo exhibition dates May's YouTube channel Learn more about May at her website   --------------------- Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter/X for photos, videos, and more from this episode & past episodes — we're @bcthebeatles everywhere. Ltd. and the Rolling Stones besides having an extensive music publishing catalogue which included songs by Sam Cooke. In 1970, Lennon and Yoko Ono hired Pang as their personal assistant. She would eventually become their production coordinator -- playing a key role in records by Lennon, Ono and Harry Nilsson. In 1974, Pang was awarded an RIAA Gold Album Award for her work on Lennon's Walls and Bridges, the #1 hit album which included his first and only #1 single in his lifetime, "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night." She can also be heard singing on "#9 Dream," the second single from the album. In the late 1970s working for Island Records, Pang coordinated all activities related to the release of albums by Robert Palmer, Third World, and Bob Marley and the Wailers. By the early 1980s, she was one of the leading professional managers in the music publishing industry, working with several unknown songwriters and successfully obtaining coverage by such artists as Diana Ross, Judas Priest, The Four Tops, Ullanda McCullough and Air Supply.During this period, Pang decided to set the record straight about her relationship with Lennon. Warner Books published her memoir, Loving John, in 1983. The book detailed her liaison and working association with the late Beatle and shed light on his relationships with his first son, Julian, as well as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison.During the last two decades, Pang has appeared in every major news and magazine publication worldwide (NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, The Daily News, UK's Mail On Sunday, Vogue online, Germany's Die Seite Drei, Marie Claire, People, etc.) and has been a guest on such national TV shows as Good Morning America, Howard Stern, Good Morning LA, CBS Sunday Morning, Court TV and Entertainment Tonight.Pang has also designed a unique collection of stainless steel Feng Shui jewelry and accent furniture. Plotkin and conservationist Liliana Madrigal. In 2008, St. Martin's Press released Instamatic Karma, a collection of Pang's personal photographs of John Lennon. Fine art prints of these portraits have been exhibited in major galleries across the country. Also in the Fall of 2014, she released a book only for the German market called John Lennon & May Pang, Another Love. She had received numerous press coverage in some of Germany's largest newspaper publications.Pang has lectured and given talks at various events across the country including public libraries and most recently at Berklee College of Music in Boston sponsored in part by theLiberal Arts Dept. While there, she also lectured the John Lennon Songwriting class. She also gave a talk at The Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp in Las Vegas as a Special Guest Speaker. She has also been asked to be a guest speaker along with guests Donovan, Peter Asher, Pattie Boyd and others at The International Beatles Week 2015 in Liverpool this coming August. In this age of “social awareness”, Pang was asked to participate as an artist on a CD called: ALL ABOUT BULLIES…BIG AND SMALL. The CD won a Grammy for The Best Children's CD category in 2012.John Lennon: The Lost Weekend- Living, Loving and Making Rock & RollShe shared his life, his music and his love. She was his intimate companion during the time known as- THE LOST WEEKEND.May Pang was twenty-two. She was John and Yoko's personal assistant, a trusted member of their inner circle of carefully chosen friends and associates. She budgeted and contracted for their albums and became an invaluable part of their creative and personal lives. When John and Yoko separated, May was enlisted to care for John as he embarked on a period known as "The Lost Weekend" – an intense period of enormous creativity and violent self-destructiveness. She lived, worked, and fell deeply in love with Lennon.Together they shared a rocky romance, with Yoko waiting in the wings for John's return. This is her record of that time, a time when John was recording, seeing friends, exploring the world and confronting his own inner demons. This week I also speak with Thomas Reid, the Marketing and Sales Manager at Lailey Vineyards/Stonebridge. Thomas gives us an introduction to Lailey and the happenings as of late - and a look into how they approach creating premium wines in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Back Room with Andy Ostroy

May Pang is the subject of the just-released documentary THE LOST WEEKEND: A LOVE STORY, in which she recounts her legendary 18-month romantic relationship in '73/'74 with John Lennon which began at 22 when she was John and Yoko Ono's personal assistant—an affair orchestrated by Yoko herself. She is also a photographer, author and jewelry designer. Her intimate portraits of John during their time together include rare images of the former Beatle and music legend and his son Julian. In addition to working for Apple Records and John & Yoko, she worked in music publishing at United Artists, Famous Music and Island Records. May and I discuss this incredible new documentary; her time with John in NY and LA; her thoughts on the phrase "Lost Weekend", her relationships with John's first wife Cynthia Lennon, Julian and Yoko; and the emotional journey she's been on since John's murder in 1980. Staci's guest is May Pang, an author, former music executive, and now the subject of a documentary, “The Lost Weekend: A Love Story,” which is about her romantic and creative time with John Lennon in the 1970s. She worked for Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, as a personal assistant and production coordinator; when the couple separated in 1973, May and the former Beatle began a relationship that lasted more than 18 months. Lennon later referred to this time as his “Lost Weekend”—hence, the title of the documentary. She has interesting stories about David Bowie, Judas Priest, and Paul McCartney that she also shares in this episode.

Fly By Night is the album where Rush takes its final form.  Original drummer John Rutsey left the group shortly after their eponymously named debut album was released.  Health problems related to diabetes made it difficult for Rutsey on tour.  He was replaced on bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee's 21st birthday by the soon-to-be legendary percussionist, Neil Peart.  Together with guitarist Alex Lifeson, the trio would become icons in the prog rock genre. Most of the material for this album was written while the band was on tour opening for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann.  Rush went into the studios for about 5 days to record the album, which was mixed by January when the group flew to Winnipeg for a concert on January 15th.  Fly By Night would also be the album in which Peart takes over much of the lyrical work with the songs, while Lee and Lifeson compose much of the music.  The lyrical styles are noticeably different between the first and second album, complete with literary themes which reflect Peart's habit as an avid reader. This album is also the one which saw Rush moving in a decidedly prog rock direction.  This could be attributed to Neal "The Professor" Peart's lyrics, but the entire band wanted each song to show a different side to their writing and playing, creating a diversity of styles in the tracks.Friend of the show Sean Mooney stands in for WTR Rush Ambassador, Bruce Fricks to bring us this classic prog rock album.  AnthemThe lead-off track to the album was originally conceived by Lee and Lifeson while Rutsey was still in the band.  The name of the track is from an Ayn Rand novella, as do the lyrics.  Peart's inspiration by Rand would return when the group penned their fourth album, 2112.Beneath, Between and BehindThis is the first song to feature Peart's lyrics.  It was about the discovery of America and the birth of the United States.  The lyrics reference the American dream and growth as well as some darker history like wars and immigration.  "Beneath the noble birth between the proudest words behind the beauty, cracks appear.  Once with heads held high they sand out to the sky why do their shadows bow in fear?"Best I CanOne of two tracks written before Peart joined the band, this song's music and lyrics were both penned by Geddy Lee, and the song saw regular performance during Rush's first North American tour.  The lyrics have a more rock theme than Peart's more literary efforts.  "Don't give me speeches 'cause they're oh so droll.  Leave me alone, let me rock and roll."Fly By NightThe "hit" single from the album leads off side 2, and peaked at number 88 on the Billboard charts.  The lyrics reflect Peart's first trip away from home when he traveled from Canada to England.  "Fly by night, goodbye, my dear.  My ship isn't coming and I just can't pretend." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture The Stepford WivesThis dystopian sci-fi thriller finds a couple in the town to Stepford, where the women mysteriously transform into submissive domesticated housewives. STAFF PICKS:Song for America by Kansas Wayne leads off the staff picks with the single cut to a 10-minute epic paying tribute to America.  It reflects the beauty that can be seen from a jet, but also the ugliness of industrialization.  The 5/4 time interspersed in the song marks it as a prog rock masterpiece.Jackie Blue by Ozark Mountain DaredevilsRob brings us a cool groove about a woman in pursuit of happiness, but who never stays with anything long enough to find happiness.  The original inspiration was a guy they met in Los Angeles who was strung out on drugs.  Drummer Larry Lee takes lead duties for this song which made it to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.#9 Dream by John Lennon Lynch features a song released before he was born from Lennon's "Walls and Bridges" album, which coincidentally went to number 9 on the charts.  The song literally came from a dream Lennon had, with no inspiration.  The "mystery voice" in the background is Lennon's girlfriend at the time, May Pang.  Several of the lyrics are nonsense words.Adam's Apple by Aerosmith Sean finishes the staff picks with a deep cut from Aerosmith.  The lyrics are inspired by the story of the temptation of Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 3.  It appears on Aerosmith's album "Toys in the Attic," which Steve Tyler wanted to name "Love at First Bite" at one point, a line from this song. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Express by BT Express We finish off this week's podcast with in instrumental hit from the early disco era.

Tony King was general manager of Apple US in the early 70s, but thereafter worked directly with John and Ringo, promoting their work from 1973 through 1975. Beyond that, he was a true British rock Zelig figure, partying with The Beatles the night before they flew to America for their 1964 Ed Sullivan Show debut; working with Andrew Oldham and the Stones during their "Satisfaction" heyday; thereafter for George Martin and AIR Studio, and then Apple. He also befriended Elton John (before he was) as well as tons of others. His story has just been published in "The Tastemaker: My Life with the Legends and Geniuses of Rock Music." Few people knew John Lennon as intimately as May Pang. Pang was Lennon's lover during the infamous “Lost Weekend” which lasted 18 months during late 1973 through 1975.  In this exclusive interview, we learn about their relationship and the kind of person John Lennon really was. During this highly creative time for Lennon, Pang took candid photos of Lennon in a comfortable, relaxed environment. A collection of these private photographs will be on display in various cities, including at City Winery in NYC this Sat April 8 and Sun April 9. The exhibition entitled, “The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” coincides with the feature film documentary “The Lost Weekend : A Love Story” that premieres in theaters beginning April 13th. Admission to the exhibit is free to the public and all works are available to purchase. Advance tickets to the film premiere screening are on sale now at: https://www.thelostweekendtickets.com/?campaign=IconicYT. Watch the trailer here: https://youtu.be/6v07NzukoZU. May Pang will be in attendance at City Winery NYC and signing copies of her fine art photographs for customers. On Sunday, the fabulous Beatles band “Strawberry Fields” will be performing their weekly Ultimate Beatles Brunch concert at noon (admission required, tickets available at https://citywinery.com/NewYork/Online/Article/new-york-strawberry-fields-lp-2023.) Billed as “a weekend that lasted 18 months and a love story that took 50 years to tell”, THE LOST WEEKEND: A LOVE STORY (from Iconic Releasing) explores the 18-month relationship (1973-1975) that John Lennon spent with May Pang, his Chinese American assistant turned lover (on Yoko Ono's insistence and which she came to regret). With May's help, he had his most artistically and commercially productive period post-Beatles—with the albums "Mind Games", "Walls and Bridges", which included his only #1 Hit Single "Whatever Gets You Through the Night", "Rock and Roll" and collaboration with Rock legends Elton John, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, Mick Jagger, and Ringo among others. Also, on that album Pang can be heard on the song “#9 Dream” where she whispers John's name in the song. Another song on the album “Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)” was written about Pang. Pang chronicles it all revisiting her younger self, as a naïve 22-year-old experiencing her first unforgettable love. Pang also encouraged Lennon to reconnect with his family and his friends, which ultimately led to a reunion with Paul McCartney and a memorable jam session between the two Beatles. Pang also arranged for Julian Lennon to visit his father for the first time in almost three years. One of Pang's photographs of Julian Lennon graces the cover of Julian's latest album entitled “Jude.”  Lennon also went into the studio with friend Harry Nilsson during this time and produced his album “Pussy Cats.” It was during this time that Pang rented a house in Santa Monica and moved in with Lennon and fellow partiers Ringo Starr, Keith Moon (The Who) and Harry Nilsson. Several photos from this time also appear in the exhibition.  “The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” exhibition will provide fans a rare opportunity to see John Lennon in a new light, through the lens of someone who knew him intimately during one of the most creative periods of his life. Pang's photos will be on display and available to purchase for two days only. Check out the show and meet May Pang at City Winery NYC, 25 11th Avenue (at 15th Street), New York, NY for two days only, Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9, 2023.
