Lisa and Freddie McMillan own a unique restaurant in Brewton, Alabama. They offer a full hot meal to all who stand in line—at no charge. This couple has invested from their own savings to make a difference for senior citizens who often go without meals and rarely enjoy a restaurant experience. A donation box receives contributions. Lisa says, “Sometimes we find nothing there. Sometimes a thank-you note. Sometimes $1,000. Always, we have everything we need. Our goal is to feed the need, restore dignity, and develop community.” Caring for the needy can seem a daunting task—unless we depend on God! The gospels include records of Jesus feeding thousands by inviting His disciples to participate: “You give them something to eat” (Matthew 14:16). In Acts we learn that in the early church, believers “shared everything they had” (4:32) so that “there were no needy persons among them” (v. 34). Many of them sold property and gave the proceeds to the apostles who “distributed to anyone who had need” (vv. 34-35). Understanding their possessions ultimately belonged to God, they voluntarily invested from what they owned in the lives of others. God provides. Sometimes by His own hand and sometimes through the hands of His people. He feeds our need so that we can feed the need of others.

It's been almost four months since City Fire Chief Pierre Brewton returned home to Spartanburg to lead the department where he first honed his skills as a firefighter. Returning after serving for four years as Fire Chief for the City of Albemarle, NC, Chief Brewton began his career with the City of Spartanburg in 1988, assigned to garbage collection in the Public Works Department. In 1994, he successfully transitioned to the Spartanburg Fire Department, rising through the ranks to eventually serve as Assistant Fire Chief, the highest-ranking minority member in Spartanburg Fire Department history.  Chief Brewton was born and raised in the Highland community in Spartanburg and is a proud graduate of Spartanburg High School, Limestone University, and Spartanburg Community College. He is credentialed through the Center for Public Safety Excellence as a Chief Fire Officer and Chief Training Officer and is a graduate of Texas A&M's Fire Service Chief Executive Fire Officer Program and the International Association of Fire Chiefs Fire Service Executive Development Institute. Today on the podcast, we're talking with Chief Brewton about his experiences growing up and living in Spartanburg, his plans for the fire department he leads, and his reflections on the future of community he is dedicated to serving.

STORY 2: Clark Atlanta Professor and Author: “When You Get An Opportunity, Run With It.” Dr. Daniel Black, a professor and author from Clark Atlanta University, was the featured speaker at Smyrna's second annual Black History Month event. Owners proudly showcased their cats, like Jasper, a Maine Coon aiming for a national win, and Sterling, a sweet silver tabby exotic who won an award for resembling a taco in a costume contest.
